Bodies by Pilates is just the right prescription for any man or woman seeking an excellent workout in the positive environment offered by proprietress and trainer, Emily Easton. Emily's classic background in this discipline pays dividends for every student when she carefully designs a training regimen customized to fit that person's profile and goals.

During actual workouts Emily consistently provides a beautiful blend of encouragement, humor, and discipline. The joy she takes from her work is obvious and infectious for all her students, whether she is conducting a private session consisting of one student or a mat session involving as many as ten.

The studio, located just north of the Lyndale-Lake intersection near Uptown, shares a parking lot with The Egg and I. It is well equipped and spending an hour there virtually guarantees the student will leave both tired and happier for the effort expended. Ignore the occasional parking hassle; it?s well worth the experience. And if variety is your game, pick from a number of session types and plans to suit your schedule and budget.

So, if you are looking for an over-priced, regimented, one-size-fits-all approach to exercise, Bodies by Pilates is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a reasonably priced, challenging but fun exercise program under the watchful eye of a caring professional, then Bodies by Pilates is just the ticket.

Prior to coming to Bodies by Pilates, I had worked with three different pilates instructors. Emily's unique training, tremendous spirit, and emphasis on form are a few of the reasons she is the best there is, and she is right here in Uptown.

If you don't sweat while doing Pilates, you are doing it wrong! Pilates with Emily is a core workout like nothing I had done before. By working and strengthening the large core muscles in your body rather than just the appendages as many workouts do, you are literally "supporting" yourself. It helps with back problems (from which I suffered) posture (we can all use a little help there) and increases stamina and overall strength. While it is a tough workout, I find myself really looking forward to my private lesson each week and then my mat class once a week. Emily keeps your form in check, moves you forward, and makes you strive to get better.

I have been working with Emily for two and a half years now, with no plans to stop. This is a great supplement to your other workout routines - and adds many of its own unique benefits. Grateful to be a client!

I was diagnosed in middle school with mild scoliosis, and although I wasn't forced to wear a body brace for 9 months at the height of 8th grade girl insecurity, the condition has plagued me for 36 years. I tried a lot of things but nothing stuck until a friend introduced pilates to me while I was working in Berkeley and upon my return to Minneapolis insisted I find someone who was New York trained (his point being that it is the closest to Joseph Pilates' methodology) and he helped me find Emily Easton at Bodies By Pilates. In the two years I have been training under her instruction I have witnessed a fundamental transformation in the health of my back; increased strength, flexibility and I'm quite certain I am a solid 5'8" now. The studio atmosphere is friendly and relaxed while the workouts are rigorous and disciplined. This is by far the best investment I've made into my health, and under Emily's guidance I actually continue to be stimulated by the practice of pilates.

I have been taking pilates classes at Bodies by Pilates since July 2007. It is located across the parking lot from the Egg and I and is right on the Greenway in Uptown. It is a very clean and relaxing place to be. I was side-swiped by a car while on my bike in August and the instructors have been very accommodating to me in light of my injuries. I highly recommend taking pilates lessons from Bodies by Pilates.

Pros: It is reasonably priced and the location is convenient.

Cons: It can be frustrating trying to get my body to do what is asked of me, but the training is tailor made for me and where I am at physically.

Forget any assumptions you have about Pilates: you know, too much granola, not enough sweat. For the past two years, under the tough-as-a-drill-sergeant but always warm and supportive guidance of owner/instructor Emily Easton, I have transformed my body and life with three-times-a-week sessions: I have more energy, get sick way less often, finally lost those three lbs that 45 years and two kids had tacked on, have a waist for the first time in my life and can touch my toes for the first time since junior high. I credit all this to the personal care Emily provides everyone in her small classes, barking out orders, between jokes, like "Close your ribs! Narrow your hips! Shoot energy out of your heel! Squeeze your inner thigh. No, not there." (Pokes five inches below your crotch.) "THERE!" (Pokes two inches below your crotch.) Now, how she can tell whether your ribs are closed or whether you have isolated a muscle three or five inches from your crotch, I have no idea. But she can, and the precision and passion she shows both in classes (on the mat) and privates or duos (on the reformer machine) have guided me to a level of fitness I have never before achieved. In fact, I turned to Emily about two years ago, frustrated that after six years of running I did not have the body I wanted: Jennifer Aniston arms, Madonna legs, you know the look. I didn't know a thing about Pilates at the time but had read so many celeb interviews crediting it with their red-carpet readiness that I wanted to try. (Plus I didn't like the frenetic pace and noise of classes at places like The Firm.) I have never looked back. This is not a fast-fix, but a life-style change. It took me a month just to semi-master the beginning moves; since then I have become "advanced" which is mostly just getting better at what I started way back when. Through it all Emily has made me sweat (myth-buster: pilates IS a cardio workout, at least with her), made my muscles long & lean, and made me feel welcome. Hurray!!
