im going to have to dissagree with some of the comments. i donated puppies to this business a few years back, and was very happy with the way they took care of them. when i went to drop them off they had a vet nurse there on arrival ready to give them all thier shots and check them over to make sure they were healthy. i visited them a few weeks later, and the ones that remained there still looking for new homes were very well taken care of, they looked wonderful and joyful. they were pawing and playing like there was no tomorrow. they had plenty of food and water and were very healthy looking. as for the cleanliness, i think people forget that it is in fact a pet shop and if you have ever own pets before you should know that they are very hard to keep up on especially when you have hundreds to take care of, with that being said, the only complaint i have is that i think the fish tanks could be a little cleaner when all you have to do is scrub them, the filter takes care of the rest.none the less i do enjoy house of pets and would most likely go back anytime. thanks:)

i saw the dogs the other person complained about, and i talked to the people about them. you could tell they do care about the animals, and the manager told me that they wanted to find the dogs home badly enough to give me a bunch of free stuff to take the dog. i think its sad that some people don't talk to the people before just saying mean stuff and thinking the people at the store dont care about the animals. if you talk to them you can tell. alot of the animals are rescues and they do need you to take them in to your home but not because the people dont care for them.

Pros: nice people and good selection of stuff

This is still one the the worst pet shops around in my opinion. The puppy there had no water, and when we requested that the puppy get some, were were told she probably "spilled it". Funny because her newspapers were bone dry. When she received her water, she drank the whole bowl non-stop in five minutes. The rats were kept in awful conditions, there were males in with females so there clearly is no discrimination in good breeding, they were cramped, and I know no special diet was given to any of the pregnant females. There was a male rat with a nasty bite wound that looked abscessed to his tail. The only thing I can say the ferrets and guinea pig where kept in good cages. Rats should be kept in the same cage as ferrets, with at least 24 square feet PER rat. Three full grown rats in a ten gallon tank is too crowded. Rat's need to climb, enjoy hammocks as much as ferrets. They are smart, social pets that aren't just snake food. The store claims that they don't support puppy mills, but they way they keep their rats, they might as well be one.

I went in and I was horrified when I saw the cages where the animals were kept. They had 4 or 5 cats, and some kittens, who all looked sick and a couple smaller dogs. They also had 2 full grown American Bulldog or Pit mixes for sale. They kept the dogs in the same small cages, which aren't even big enough for them to stand up or turn around in. The poor dogs were curled up on a 2x2 carpet square that was soaked with their own pee.
The animals are obviously not being taken care of at all. The sadness in their eyes was heartbreaking. The animals need to be rescued out of this place.

My wife and I grew up in Harford County so we know the face of change. The House of Pets has definitely changed. The staff is friendly, the new owner Nate is knowledgeable and helpful, and the store gets cleaner and cleaner each time we visit as management revamps the store: despite this slow economy. The animals appear well cared for and the holding pens for the kittens and puppies are up to par with pet shops twice their size. The fish selection is amazing, the snake and iguana section looks like the reptile house at the Baltimore Zoo, the bird selection is extensive, and their prices make me feel like I'm pet shopping at a big box store! We moved to Bel Air and still drive to Aberdeen for pet supplies. Bottom line: good selection and value + a fun, clean environment where you're treated like family = customers for life!!!

I have lived in Aberdeen for over a decade now and House of Pets WAS one of the worst pet shops I had been to. The manager as he has already stated has changed the store and this is true. This store has made dramatic improvement. It also has one of the most diverse selections of animals of all ages. The employees work hard but their not superheroes so you should expect some degree of mess. The animals of old age there are from many of my neighbors and they got that old out of loving care not because the owner is trying to rip you off.

I went to this place other the past weekend. They had one female puppy and the cage it was in was a disgrace. If i hadn't already had two full grown dogs in a townhouse i would have taken her home. The honeycomb light cover was broken and she could stick her head through it, almost got it stuck twice. Not to mention the hunk of metal hanging from the top corner of the cage that she had been chewing on!! I showed one of the employees there and he immediately moved her into a cage with no working light. Yea that's better for her. Then when someone asked to see her, he brought her out with no collar and no leash on and she started running circles around the store!! what happens the next time when she runs out the door. Maybe if you people had half a heart to take the dog outside once every couple of hours she may not have been so wound up. Me being the dog lover I am crouched down and she ran right over to me. Someone needs to go up there and rescue this poor dog..shes been there for a month and i believe she is priced at about $299.00. If anyone has a heart and can afford to help this puppy (17 weeks old on 03/21/09) please go up and see her.. she is precious!! And you can say this place has changed all you want but everything is still just as dirty as it was before. The fish tanks are dirty and the living spaces for the animals are dirty!!

First of all, this store rarely has young pets for sale, most of the time its older pets that the owner gerts from breeders that no one bought. Secondly, they are WAY overpriced for what they offer. Thirdly, we ended up buying a kitten/young cat once more out of pity and trying to rescue the darn thing--the cage was filthy and the cat looked almost neglected. When we brought him home, we found that he had a big flea prroblem and ended up having to bomb the house. I also have friends who went there after calling ahead to see if they had any kittens. They were told they had one and they would hold it for 2 hours. My friend showed up 30 min later and people were walking OUT THE DOOR with the kitten....my friend had driven 20 miles to get there, for nothing. The OWNER was not even a little bit apologetic. Which brings me to the people-not ALL of them are bad, but the owner is snotty and acts likes she's better than everyone else-they are extremely overpriced for what they offer.

Business Response:

Some corrections. We receive new kittens and puppies all the time, all of which are brought to us by local families that either do not want to worry about the animal being euthanized at a shelter, or simply cannot afford to keep the animals. Our prices vary by breed and type: the higher pricing on more popular puppies and kittens helps to offset the losses we often incur on larger puppies and older kittens. We do not deal with so-called commercial breeders which are often puppy mills in disguise, and we do not "put-down" and of the animals that end up in our care. House Of Pets is under new ownership- we are sorry if you were treated poorly by the previous owner- please stop in and meet our new team. I think you'll be happy with the changes.
