We are totally impressed with MCP Chimney! Mike and all of his employees are very professional and work to make sure the job is done right. They repaired several for courses of chimney brick, set new tile for our broken hearth, and installed a wood fireplace insert. They were also very competitively priced - and we talked to three other companies. All of the work was done competently, we love the wood stove and highly recommend them.

We had MCP replace our 3 story interior chimney and do interior stone work (mantel, hearth, etc.) in our townhouse. What a mistake. I would never use this company or recommend them to anyone. Overall, they are unprofessional and incompetent. I actually like the owner Mike as he seems like a straight shooter, but the people he has working for him are knuckleheads.

UNPROFESSIONAL:
Before the work started I didn't even think to ask them about a building permit. My father (in building trades for 30 years) asked me after the work was completed if they had pulled a permit. I called Montgomery County Permitting Services if a permit is needed for this type of work and I was told it was. I had MCP out to fix something a few weeks later and my father happened to be at my house at the time. My father asked the MCP project lead if they pulled a permit and MCP said they were working off the original permit...from 1984. I'm sure that is legit.

INCOMPETENT:
While opening up the roof and installing the top sections of the chimney I had water leak into my top level ceiling. I told the onsite project lead and he said "yeah you might get that." Maybe want to tell me ahead of time? They didn't offer to paint over it. Given the quality of their work it was probably better I painted over it.

The biggest gripe was the quality of their stone work. We did a stack stone, which is supposed to look somewhat random. The fireplace is at a 45/135 degree angle between two walls. Instead of going all the way to the wall with the brick, they left an inch gap between the brick and wall. Their grand plan was to fill that in with quarter round painted the same color as the walls. They were able to do that above the hearth and it looked and still looks like crap. But at that point what are you going to do? Have them rip down all of the stone and start over, which is what they would have had to do. They were content to leave the giant gap beneath the hearth. I had them come and fix that and their suggestion was to put mortar in there more or less the same color as some of the stones. It looks like crap and something a homeowner would do on their own.

The switch for the fireplace blower isn't flush with the wall. I asked the project lead to fix it and he said that's how it is.

SLEAZY:
Several weeks after the installation I was in the backyard and noticed they had used a different color shingle where they had to replace a few shingles. I'm sure they figured I wouldn't notice given the pitch of the roof. Come to find out after the fact that's what "we had on the truck." Sleazy. I had them come out to fix that and my father got on the roof to make sure they did it properly.

I couldn't wait to get these guys out of my house. Even with the things still wrong with it I wouldn't get these guys to come back and fix anything. I've had better quality work done on my house by a bunch of illegals who go door to door.

We recently hired MCP to clean our fireplace/chimney. After the cleaning we were told we had some damage to our chimney. Of course we weren't thrilled to hear this, but they had some cool video equipment which actually showed the damage. They gave us a quote for the repair work they recommended.

We had a few other chimney guys come out for their opinions/quotes, but we felt most comfortable with the MCP guys. They seemed knowledgeable and our neighbors use them regularly for their cleanings.

Overall, we were happy with their work. We weren't expecting to pay for repairs, but felt the price was reasonable and we would recommend them to others.

I had them install a wood stove a while back. One employee came to the house, took measurements, discussed the materials to be used, and gave me the quote. On the day of the install a different employee arrived as the "work leader." Unfortunately, he was quite contrary to deal with from the first minute. He told me they couldn't install it the way the first employee discussed with me at the time I received the quote (and which is the way described in the product brochure). I suspect they were just missing some of the materials. Right then, I should have turned them away and found another company because I had a bad feeling, but at the time I just wanted the stove in and didn't want to waste my day off from work. They installed the stove. The fan vibrated some of the metal making an awful noise. I disassembled the stove to try and figure out the problem and after looking at the manual, I realized they never installed the majority of the screws, the pieces were just kind of sitting there. Since they didn??t leave me the screws that came with the stove, I had to go buy them. While I was disassembling the stove I found where they had the electric cord for the fan pinched between the metal and the cord was sliced. It??s a wonder it actually worked. So I had to have the wiring fixed. The stove works well now, but I believe it would work really great if it was installed exactly as the product documentation fully specified. Later on, I had some issues with the chimney cracking above where they modified it for the flue. Because I didn't want to deal with the company again, I had someone else come out to repair the damage. They said a chimney company that deals with masonry should have known that the cracking could happen without any reinforcement to the opening. Since MCP is a local company here in a high-income area, I thought they would be a high-quality company to deal with. Unfortunately, that didn??t turn out to be the case.

McP gave us a big way above most other companies, told us we needed to have work done that did not need to be done and the person who came out called me three more times to pressure me to get the work done. I was not at all happy with them based on my one interaction with them.

McP did a pretty good job of cleaning our chimneys a couple of years ago. They did tell us, however, that our chimney liner was broken and needed to be replaced, which turned out to not be the case. I would definitely question anything that they tell you that might result in additional work for them.
