There are a few excellent teachers, however administration is unbelievably unorganized and lack professionalism. The school has a tendency to be re-active rather than pro-active and a less than perfect record concerning safety. A very nice community of parents, but don??t ever question anything; there??s no PTA or any arena to address concerns, although there are many committees and demands placed on parents. This school has many things working for it, but the academic standards are questionable and coupled with the dis-order I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I would highly recommend the Free State Montessori School to anyone who lives in the Baltimore area and is looking for a good school for their kids. I took my kids here from the time they were five years old, and have kept them in 5 years later. I originally went there because there wasn't an after school program at my kids' elementary school. After I found that the curriculum at the Montessori school is so much better than the public school, I switched my kids here full time. It's a little pricey, but well worth it.

This is one of the friendliest places I have ever had the opportunity to visit. The staff is qualified and attentive to the children's needs, and the atmosphere of learning is truly that of a close family. Parents play a vital role in the curriculum, by offering the support that children of this age (5-12) require. Students are taught in three sections, according to their age, and become as close as siblings by their graduation. I am proud to have been a part of this school for the brief time that I was, and I continue to recommend Free State to all of my friends.

More about Free State Montessori School

Think old-fashioned schoolhouse and you'll have the perfect picture of our lovely 4-acre campus and authentic, fully renovated 1923 Baltimore County schoolhouse. Located in the quiet village of Fork, we are closer than you think, just north of Baltimore, five miles north of Perry Hall, fifteen minutes from White Marsh and five miles south of Bel Air. Our large airy classrooms are fully equipped and boast beautiful views of our pleasant country setting filled with natural light from ten-foot high windows in each room. The outside grounds include a brightly colored playground, a ball field and numerous vegetable and flower gardens maintained by the children themselves. Our Vision Our vision is a school community dedicated to the education and growth of children and their families. We believe that through true education we can achieve a world in harmony where all people are able to realize their full potential. Our Mission At FSMS we are committed to the educational process, and the discovery of self within the context of community. We seek to teach a more peaceable way by creating a whole school community. In partnership with parents, we seek to assist children in the process of becoming the next generation of leaders who are well-educated, self-actualized individuals committed and capable of contributing to the betterment of the world. As co-learners in this process, we honor the inestimable worth and universal right of every child to discover their own personal excellence in every facet of their lives, among loving and mutually respectful relationships. We recognize the natural tendencies of children and believe that every child is gifted with an innate love of learning, which can be nurtured and sustained for a lifetime through positive, challenging expectations, self-reflection, and purposeful engagement in the world. Our mission is to create the conditions, which allow for such a process to unfold. Our Philosophic Beliefs and Primary Purpose The primary purpose of the FSMS is educational, based on the principles, techniques, and philosophy advocated by Dr. Maria Montessori, using a constructivist, collaborative, developmental, and experiential approach to the whole child as noted by Jean Piaget and other researchers such as Alfred Adler, John Dewey, Howard Gardner, Daniel Goleman, M. Scott Peck, Brian Swimme and Riane Eisler. These educational philosophies are also matched in Quaker principles and values that lead us to acknowledge the inestimable value of each human being, consensus decision making, non-violent conflict management, inner reflection, integrity, simplicity and social responsibility.
