I am surprised to see some of these reviews. My husband and I
have eaten breakfast and lunch at the Deer Lodge over the past
eight years and it's always been very good. We had one bad
experience, and that was only because the place was packed. We
expected service to be a little delayed. The decor is rustic and
everything you'de expect it to be.

I think you have to be a biker to appreciate this place. It is probably wonderful for a cold beer and a quick snack. But we saw they had wild game and decided to give it a try. They only seemed to have one waitress taking care of the whole place. It took forever to take our order. We had to ask twice for everything. We asked about the special game plate and at least they were honest enough to tell us how small the portion was. For $35.00. Game is not that expensive. There is an ostrich farm a few miles away. We finally decided on a salad and one ostrich burger and one buffalo burger. The meat didn't even fill in the bun. The fries and onion rings were both undercooked and greasy. They didn't even take the paper like coating off the onions before coating them. There is absolutely no way we are ever going back there. If you want a beer, go ahead, but don't go for the food.

i must have the wrong deer lodge after reading the reviews. the address was the same, and it said DEER LODGE out front. i ordered a large ice tea after a long hard motorcycle ride and was given a small glass of water with a tint of brown in it and it tasted as though perfume was added to it. i then ordered a tri tip sandwich at 13.99 and there was just enough meat to cover the bottom of the roll, i would guess 3 0z. it was the worst tri tip sandwich i have ever had and i'm 56 yrs old. i gave up on my comments to the waitress after i said the tea was terrible, and she said that she did not make it, and offered no further assistance other then saying she would leave the pitcher on the table. i finally order a beer instead, and i don't drink. i figured they can't mess that up. a friend had commented to me that they were giving smaller portions, and charging more, but did not mention the food was terrible. i will never eat there again, or bring my friends.

Once considered to be a biker bar, Ojai's oldest eatery serves a surprisingly good meal of wild game and excellent sides. Not many other establishments in Southern California are brave enough to serve deer to their patrons. Not many other places would mount a Jacklope head on the wall. Few places, even if they serve Guinness beer on tap will pour it correctly. The Deer Lodge in Ojai does all three. It's a manly enough place to eat at with your buddies after a hard day of goofing off, yet can be romantaic enough to bring your wife to on an anniversary dinner and not get in trouble. The food is fresh and good. The service is fine and the atmosphere is rugged, solid and woodsy.

I was in Ojai a few weekends ago, just driving around looking for a place to eat with my boyfriend and we ended up stopping in at the Deer Lodge. It looked so quintessential Ojai from the outside, rustic and lodge-y. The food was actually pretty good. The burger my boyfriend had was great, and the tuna sandwich was very tasty. The fries were terrific, too. The best part though was all the beer on tap...it was 108 degrees outside! I could have done without all the taxideric wild animals, but otherwise it was a great place for a burger and a beer.
