Originally built in 1910, Cornell Hotel de France has been owned and operated by the Lambert Family for almost forty years. In that time the Lamberts have created, in San Francisco, the kind of small three star hotel that may be found on the rive gauche in Paris. For a moderate price, customers can have the personal comfort of a bed and breakfast. Completely renovated, mixing the charm of the past and modern amenities, the Cornell Hotel is unique and distinctly European, easy going, and profuse with art and history. Each hallway features fine prints of a single artist: Modigliani, Matisse, Chagall, Gauguin,Toulouse Lautrec...the first floor being devoted to Jeanne D??i??i??Arc. Individually decorated, each room is equipped with cable television, telephone with private voice mail and data port (DSL connection in the lobby), safe and hair dryer.

In ShortOutside, a French flag flies next to an American flag, hinting at what is to come. While the setting is pure San Francisco, the experience suggests Provence. The combination of character and great rates make it a real deal. The 60 rooms in this family-run hotel are filled with French ambiance, from the white painted woodwork to the blue curtains and bedspreads. All of the rooms have private baths and are nonsmoking.

Great Location

We stayed at this hotel this past summer and although the rooms were small, they were lovely and clean with an old world feel. The elevator is original to the building and the restaurant in the basement is probably one of the best kept secrets in San Francisco.

Near Union Square at $79/night!

If you are used to modern have everything at your fingertips type of hotels, this might not be for you. But if you are looking for a comfortable, welcoming, European ambience, this place is for you!
Rooms run a bit small, but are comfortable and clean. The elevator is probably the original one in this victorian building but is incredibly quiet. Breakfast is served every morning in their restaurant downstairs...we are not talking Continental breakfast....eggs, pancakes, etc. were choices. Great French ambience.
Overall, a lovely place for a great price!
