What makes Festoon special is that you can count on a hair style that is uniquely tailored to flatter your features. It's definitely not a cookie-cutter approach to hair cuts like so many other places. They have the artistic sensibility I have always been looking for.

I lived in Europe for a couple of years and generally got the best hair cuts ever; they approached hair cutting as an art. When I came back to the Bay Area I tried out many places to find the same level of quality and attention. I found this at Festoon. Their hairstylists are remarkably consistent. I would trust my hair with any one there. For me, Festoon is my HAIR SALON FOR LIFE!

Pros: Hairstyling with Artistic Flair & Sophisticated Sensibility

Cons: You must book weeks ahead of time

I have been going to Festoon for quite a while. I first went there because I was on a very limited budget, but needed a hair cut. After being a model for a few students, I met Bruno. I am proud to say, that I am one of Bruno's oldest (not in age) clients,as I have been going to Bruno now for over 5 years, and I have always been very satisfied. I get positive comments on my hair cut almost weekly. I look forward to my hair cut appointments because of our stimulating and humorous conversations. I work late and usually can't come in until the end of the day, and Bruno has always been very accommodating, even staying late and forgoing dinner so fit me in.
If you are looking for a modern and flattering haircut, and a good time (wink, wink :) make an appointment with Bruno at Festoon.

I've been getting my hair cut at Festoon on a recommendation from a friend living in the East Bay (I recently moved from SF over here). I went for a couple of hair cuts and was relatively happy with the service. I went on Friday to get a cut and the person cutting my hair didn't listen to what I wanted and I ended up leaving the salon not being happy with my hair. I wanted to tell her before I left but she already had another client waiting for her so I didn't feel like I could make that person wait any longer. I called the next day and mentioned to them that I wanted to come back in to get my cut fixed and the receptionist was very accommodating and fit me in right away. I went in and was able to get a cut that is more of what I wanted (although, it's not exactly - and I don't think I'm trying to get anything fancy, just a bob that doesn't look like it belongs on a soccer mom). I thought this "fix" was going to be complimentary (or at least, discounted) since it was actually an extension of the previous day's cut. I was shocked when I was charged for a full price cut on my way out. With tipping the stylists and paying for two haircuts, I've now invested $150 in a hair cut that I don't love. If I was planning on spending that much on a cut, I would have gone to a different salon. I will not (nor will any of the friends I've talk to about this) be going back to Festoon. We all think that they should have better customer service then that. I'm actually disappointed b/c overall I liked the salon.

Cons: terrible customer service

.

The first time I went to Festoon's I thought the customer service was terrible but I got a really great haircut. I was left waiting for a half hour and no one checked in with me during that time to let me know what was going on. The front desk people were really rude to me when I checked in and while I waited. I went back for a second time and this time I was late. I called to say I would be late and they said everything was fine. After a really long, bad day I rushed over there and was looking forward to a nice haircut. However, when I got there, I was told I was too late (20 minutes) and would have to pay half price and reschedule or pay full price for a "dry cut". Again, the front desk people were VERY rude. I think that if you are going to leave people waiting, then you should at least accommodate people when they are late. I wished they would have told me my options when I called to say I'd be 15 minutes late instead of waiting to tell me when I got there. Had I known 15 minutes was the maximum time I could be late I would not have wasted my time, nor would I have sat there the first time waiting a half hour for them.

I've been going to Bruno for about 3 years. He is pretty much the perfect stylist and I should know because I have been getting my hair cut at high end salons for many years, mostly because I want a cute funky hair cut and the concept salon stylists are trained to do that. I often get stopped on the street by people asking who cuts my hair, because it is the cutest cut EVER! Bruno I love you!!! Yes, a cut with Bruno is expensive. I'm an academic, so I don't have a lot of money, but I always leave my appointments with Bruno feeling so great about myself that it is worth it. He is expertly trained and he is the sweetest person as well. He listens to what you want and isn't pushy at all. Book well in advance and have a great time!

I wrote a review called "BAD HAIR DAY!!!" about my exprience with Danielle at the salon. Not long afterwards, the salon contacted me and offered me a complimentary haircut to make up for it. I was impressed with how important it was to them that their reputation be maintained. I never expected to be offered a free service. I went to Anthony for my second cut. He was really good about listening to what I wanted. After Danielle's cut, I went to another salon and had it "fixed", which meant getting a short cut. Now I'm working on growing it out. Although I'm not at a length where my hair will be what I want it to be, Anthony did his best to give me something that will ease the growing out phase. It's still not my ideal cut, but Anthony was very attentive and really worked with me. The customer service was spectacular and I'm willing to try again when my hair is closer to a length that will really allow stylists to show what they can do. Thanks for responding to my last post, Festoon.

Pros: nice atmosphere, nice front desk staff

Cons: inexperienced hairdresser, late for appt time

great service...pretty good considering its in berkeley although the "gourmet" berkeley has nicer things. if you have the time, go to sf....everything seems better there...bbut beware of the priciness as well.

the manager and the clerks are very snotty and even rude...the hair stylists are competent--if you can get an appt. many are booked 3 months in advance--which doesn't really work for many folks. thus, the staff pushes the interns on you--never allow that!

this salon has the reputation of 86ing customers who do not follow in step with the average 3 month wait.

sorry, this just isn't worth all that insult.

What I like about this place is that you can get a good haircut with a junior stylist at an affordable price. Color is pricey but haircuts are reliably good. I've gone there twice after other salons butchered my hair and both stylists did a great job.
It DOES get crowded, though, even early on a weekday morning so if you're looking for solitude, look elsewhere. For $35/haircut, however, I'll put up with a crowd for an hour or so.

This is a casual salon with talented people working in it. However, they overbook, overcharge, and tend to spend a lot of time talking about how great they are. Their prices for their top stylists are very high. Assistants do the washing, mixing, drying, and styling. The stylist has forgotton to color my hair--I had to remind him--another time he started to put on all-over color instead of highlights. For the money, I expect the stylist to at least read the little index card with my information on it. The trainees who do comb out are often not good at all and I have twice asked for a restyling from the senior stylist. This makes me feel like a nuisance. I've gone to the salon about 5 times, but I'm not going back. Cost of highlights, cut, and 2 products was $280. As a college professor, I can't afford it. The cuts were good, but I always felt ripped off. I just can't make myself go back. The owner seems to be very full of himself, I'm sorry to say. If the price were reasonable, I might put up with the mediocre treatment.

I went to Festoon after being slightly dissatisfied with my current stylist (plus I live close to the Berkeley salon). I got an appointment quickly, probably because the stylist was pretty new. I experienced all the things mentioned in the other reviews: she was not ready for me when I arrived on time and I had to wait quite a while. She was overbooked and had to get someone else to use a blowdryer on my hair while she talked to a client in the next chair, which I have never had happen anywhere else. The whole appointment took forever.

The style and color were both pretty bad. In fact, I would say that my hair almost looked better before I went in than it did when I left. I asked her to do something pretty similar to what I had and she managed to cut it far far too short in the front, leave too much on top, and make my color much more boring. In fact the whole style was boring. I was not impressed.

So if you have a good stylist there, it is probably okay, but they are definitely overbooking the stylists and the quality may be kind of uneven.

I am always weary about going to a new salon, but I was very confident that my experience at Festoon would be positive and I would be really happy with my results. And guess what? I was ectastic about it. The entire staff from the front desk to the stylists to the assistants and even the small dogs that run around were so welcoming and friendly. I went to a student, who did an amazing job cutting my hair. She was able to give me the exact cut that I was thinking of, and actually, she made it even better than what I was invisioning.

Finally a place that can give a cool men's cut. I don't like my hair to be too clean cut looking, and this is the first place I've been to where I actually manage to walk out of the salon liking the way that my hair looks the way I want and describe to the stylist, instead of having to wait for it to grow out for a month. And the staff and stylists are always really friendly and helpful.

One of my friends told me recently that I'm "that girl with the great hair." I've got Festoon to thank for that. My stylist, Paul, always manages to make my hair look better than I could imagine it could. Everyone who works there is friendly and nice and the front desk guy is hot. I can't recommend this place enough.

there is nothing in the world like going without a decent haircut for three months, and then stepping into Festoon. my sylist and i clicked right away, and i left the salon feeling literally like a million dollars. i'd recommend a Festoon visit to anyone in a heartbeat!

For the last 4 years I have been trying out hair stylists in different cities and a couple of different states.

One day, having had lunch at Cafe Claude, I passed Festoon Salon and stopped to watch a guy working on a hair cut... "That's more like it!... there he is" I went right in an got an appointment with "the guy in the corner by the window at Claude Lane. David.

Iwas right. I have finally found a stylist with independend opinions, idea, high-level technical skills, tons of training and education... and on top of that... he is a really nice person, who does not talking your ears off if you are not in the mood for that.

My husband and I now have quarterly back-to-back appointments with David Scissorhands and I have am telling all my scandinavian friends...

Go, check him out!

Through an affiliate salon in the south bay I was directed to Festoon Salon in Berkeley. Karma must have been on my side when I called to book my first appointment and they set me up with Bruno. I love doing new things with my hair. Bruno has cutting edge ideas that work well with the shape of my face and coloring. I get more compliments on my style than ever before. Bravo!

I've had completely inconsistent results with this salon. I've had GREAT hair cuts, all-over color, and highlights. However, I recently went in to have my bleached out (by Festoon) hair restored to a more natural darker blonde. After 2 salon visits totalling nearly 10 hours, I left with DEAD, DULL, over-processed DARK BROWN hair. I colored it twice at home, which mercifully took out some of the color. Recently went in for cut & highlights and love it again. It's a crap shoot. The Berkeley staff is SO rude and stupid, it's laughable. Really, girls, you're answering phones. Get over it.

Marywynn has the best hands! She is incredibly knowledgeable about your skin and what products you should be using at home to maintain the effects of her facials. I had a bathoroom full of stuff I gave away, my skin looks great, even my husband who never noticed when I had a facial noticed her work, and now is a client of hers as well. We even share some products! I have ever encountered such warmth and experience. She will be moving to Portland soon, if you can get an appointment I highly recommend you do. She truly is gifted.

I usually see Premstar at Festoon and she does the best job ever! She listens to my ideas and then gives her input and it always turns out amazing. I've even seen some of the students and they are great too! I've never been disappointed.
Everyone has their own style and personality and they really make you feel at home.
The front desk staff is always sweet and very accomidating and I couldn't ask for a better salon experience.

After years with the same hairdresser that was good but consistently it looked the same. I was referred to Festoon by a friend of mine. I made an appt. with Bruno and have never been happier. I recently got cut and color from Paul, a new stylist at Festoon. It was PERFECT...exactly what i was looking for. He really took the time to make sure that everything was exactly how I wanted it. I appreciate the level of care that the stylists put into each client's experience (i've seen 3 other stylists previously, and they were all equally amazing...superb haircuts).
I also really appreciated the courtesy of the front desk staff and the assistants. i felt very pampered. ALso, all stylists work in both San Francisco and Berkeley - so you can take your pick.
p.s. the red flower products are amazing.

I've been going to Festoon for years, and am consistently happy with them. The staff are terrific, and the haircuts are great. Consistently. Staff are thoughtful about customer service, too...I always feel pampered.

The regular stylists are pricey, but for those wanting a less pricey haircut, I recommend cycling through their junior stylists. For $35 or less you get a great haircut.

I've been a Festoon customer for several years, and I've always had excellent experiences at the hands of a variety of their extremely talented staff. I highly recommend this salon to everyone - a few bad reviews/experiences does NOT a bad salon make. I don't agree with the previous few reviews. The overwhelming consenus is that Festoon is a wonderful and worthy hair cutting institution.

The assistant guy was so pushy with the products that he actually had them sitting on the counter as I was about to pay. The stylist was nice, but they were so busy that she did not come to me at the end to check on my hair (the assistant did pretty much everything). She told me that she would do 'touch ups' on my cut at the end since I wasn't quite satisfied with it when she cut it before my highlights. After the assistant styled my hair (burned me a couple of times with the blow drier), he just left me on the chair..until another staff eventually came around and told me I was done. Wow..what an experience..

I think Festoon gets by on its reputation and little else. I went there for years until I got fed up with the endless wait (appointments never start on time) and being passed from assistant to assistant while the stylist rushes off to tend to another client. They tend to overlap appointments to make the most $$$ possible, so you are always gettting passed off from one person to the next.

It's a very hectic place, not relaxing in the least. I will say that they do know color and seem to train their employees well, but that's about the only positive I can think of. Also, the pressure they put on you to buy their products is ridiculous!

Pros: decent color

Cons: high-pressure sales, mediocre cuts, harried staff

I went to this salon for a couple years because I had a really great stylist, who made it worth it for me to put up with the frustration of being treated like a dollar sign by the rest of the staff; beware, you have to make an appointment more than a month in advance, and if you don't cancel 24 hrs. ahead of time they charge you. Typically you get passed around from person to person (for shampoo, color, cut) in one very long session. It's expensive, but the products they use are absolutely top of the line. Their senior stylists are very good and very pricey.

I went to festoon in berkely because I was lucky enough to have gotten a next day appointment (VERY rare for festoon) so i took it, plus I didnt have the time to go all the way out to SF to my usual salon Cowboys&Angels. The atmosphere of festoon was nice. The staff was friendly. However I didnt enjoy my cut/color very much. My stylist didnt really seem to know how to approach my hair which is extremely fine and straight. She gave me a cut that any cheaper stylist at like a supercuts couldve given me. She made my bangs very choppy and the haircut made my hair look even thinner than it was before. I dont recommend festoon unless you are getting your hair done by the top stylists ranging from $100+.

The people of Festoon have always made me feel special. I've seen 3 of their stylists, all techniquely excellent and charming and each one unique in style and personality. The last time I went in I asked for something new and when I got it I wasn't quite sure I liked it. I was nervous about calling and voicing my displeasure with my new look but they invited me in right away to deal with my issue. They were very accomodating and put me at ease, I didn't feel the least bit of attitude for changing my mind. I appreciate the high level of professionalism and service. If you go to Festoon expect to have a great experience.

I went to this salon about 5 years ago and got some great haircuts, and the waxing and facial treatments were great, too. I moved from the Bay Area for a few years, and when I returned, I made another appointment here. Unfortunately, the woman I had gone to before left years ago, so I decided to try someone else. Big mistake. I had to wait a half hour for my appointment, and the person I got took a huge chunk out of the back of my hair. Because of the way it was styled when I left, I didn't even notice until I washed it. However, I did notice other stylists were doing well with their clients, so I think it was just the combination of my stylist and my hair.

i had a facial this august and absolutely loved it. it was so relaxing and just went on and on. it was a birthday gift to me and i am so, so grateful to my generous sister for this experience, especially since it's not something i would ever pay my own money for. in terms of long-lasting results, i am not sure that it was that effective, but it sure felt good and my skin did look noticeably good for a day or so. however, i would recoomend their waxing services w/out any hesitation. totally worth the price ($35). my brows looked wonderful and i got A LOT of compliments. the woman who did both procedures was so nice and talented. ask for a petite, blond, thirtyish woman (sorry i can't remember her name).

Eric is fantastic. I have difficult, long, curly hair and I'm terrified of change. Erick talked me into a cut that made the most of my hair and is extremely versatile. He is obsessed with hair and notices the details that I never have (ie--wave pattern, wierd cowlicks, etc.). Best of all, the cut was $50--cheaper than any decent cut I've found in SF. You may have to wait to get an appt but it is ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT. AND they're open Sundays.

Bad experience. I went there for a Keratase hair treatment with a stylist, because he was busy, he had an assistant do my hair. I felt rushed, and was not satisfied with my hair. People raved about how after getting a treatment on your hair, it's supposed to look shiny, but mine just looked dulled still. I would not go back to this location, but may try to one in SF.

The haircut I recieved here, is the best I have ever had! I walked in, told the stylist I needed a cut that took minimal maintenance. She sized up the texture of my hair and went to work. My hair is incredibly easy to maintain and flattering.
