I honestly do not understand the multitude of negative reviews this place has received! The Rio provides one of the most unique dining experiences in Los Angeles, and I have been there several times. In fact, it is one of my dating standards for someone I really want to have a great time with. I don't know what people are talking about "choice of steak, fish, or chicken." This style of Brazilian dining, by definition, offers all of those choices served traditionally, on a sword, and in abundance. Each table has a small wooden figure, one side red and one side green. If your green side is up, the waiters do not stop bringing to your table an almost overwhelming variety of skewered meats. I also enjoy the dinner show immensely, as I enjoy cultural displays. It allows for one to digest one's food, so that one may enjoy dancing once the restaurant turns into a night-club, which is after the show. One person mentioned that the female Samba dancers were "mediocre-looking" which I find very offensive. First of all, no they are not. Second of all, they are dancers, not models, and I happen to know that they also perform in Miami at times and all around the country. They are professionals. I love the ambiance, I have always enjoyed my fellow patrons there, and the food is always more than I can handle! Again, I do not understand where these negative reviews are coming from!

Pros: music, food, ambiance!

Cons: sometimes a little too crowded

Best place to be Friday, Saurday and Sunday nights. The atmosphere was just crazy on Friday and Saturday night. Every time i go with my friends there are atleast 450-500 people, its just crazy. We try to go atleast 3 times a month, we just love the place. Everyone complaining about the Valet, shut the f**k up, you shouldnt even be out if your going to complain about $3 or $5. It's encino rule for there jursidiction, you must park your car at the Valet, you cannot park across the street and enter the club. The food was just so delicious, the beef was well marinated, sausages to die for..omg! For all you Salsa lovers, Armenians, and Persians this is the place to be on SATURDAY NIGHTS! You can tell from the name "Rio" that its going to be somewhat Brazilian. The menu was just shocking, you have your Brazilian meats, chicken, fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, liver, even kidneys...just crazy everything was good! The cover charge was not bad at all. The waiters weren't also bad..GOOD LOOKING. with 500 people capacity they exceed good service, i mean they were really good. I dont know what these people are talking about, that is about the ones with negative reviews about the place, they must be 80 years old or something! dont listen to them. JUST GO AND you guys will find out what i mean.

I feel bad giving this establishment one star because if there were an option for no stars, it would have been much more appropriate.

There were 9 of us that wanted to take our friend out for his 23rd birthday, but we couldn't decide where to eat. Driving down Ventura until the birthday boy could choose a place sounded like a good idea. He spotted Rio Lounge and none of us had been there before. We went inside and were seated. The place was half full (or half empty) so there was plenty of seating for us. As expected waiters came around with different types of meat that we could try/decline at our whim. The food wasn't fantastic and the waiters were horrible.

All of a sudden.... it starts. These mediocre (not very aesthetically pleasing) ladies come out in Brazilian dance gear (i think) and start doing some loosely coreographed moves (not very in synch). Then these two kids (around 8 years old) take the stage and do some dancing of their own (their facial expressions looked like deers in headlights). Then these two guys come out to perform Capoiera. I don't think it was supposed to be a real fight, but these guys were doing moves so close together, they struck each other multiple times.

Alright... so now that amateur show that we totally didn't even expect or were told about was finally over. It actually hurt me to see the poor performance. We ask for the bill and the food pricing seemed pretty appropriate. It was around 30-40 bucks a person with tax and tip. The best part? There was a 150 dollar charge PER PERSON for the show that none of us were told about (we were also taxed for the 150 as well). We pretty much all wanted to complain, but we were there for a friends bday and didnt want to sour the night. ughh...never going back to this place.

i can't believe a place like this exists in a civilized city. The servers were horrible, HORRIBLE- they hardly spoke english, they were incredibly rude and slow, and looked dirty and completely unprofessional. My husband and I went, being that we live in the area and we have always driven past it and were curious, and we figured we couldnt go wrong on a friday night. The scarce crowd that was there were sleezy, the food was disguisting, and the dj didnt even know how to mix songs properly. We headed over to the main bar after our meal hoping to find something good about the place. To our surprise the bartender (who looked surprisingly like Jessica Simpson) was friendly, fun, and made our terrible night just a tiny bit better. Other than our final drink, the place was a mess and a disgrace to Los Angeles dining/nightlife. Your better off spending your gas (if your from the valley) to go to a normally run place in Hollywood rather than a dump like this.

I was reading through the reviews because I haven't been to this spot since 2003 and was thinkgin about going again. I remember the place being slammin with excellent food, great entertainment and pricey drinks but you'll leave tipsy. I had a wonderful time there and I thought the food was good. I am very surprised to see all the bad ratings. Simply from reading them, I do not think I will be returning.

Holy hell. The worse food I have ever had and don't get me started on the service. I was there 3 times under the previous owners and it was great. What happened? They ran out of food so instead of telling you they ran out they just gave you what they had available and hoped you wouldn't know the difference. My wife's order was half cooked and my steak was pure rubber mixed with a little fat. Their idea of a side of vegetables were weeds off of someones lawn. Terrible entertainment. The best part of the evening was when we left. Don't waste your time or money.

I was there on Saturday night with 5 friends and restaurant offers you an option to pay $15 cover charge or $45 for dinner and a show. Dinner included salad, appetizer (shrimp cocktail or crab cake), entree (stake, fish or chicken) and ice cream. Show was not bad, but only 30 min.
I don?t remember the last time I had such a terrible food was; stake was burned, fish was frozen inside. My friend received her drink in a broken glass and after asking for another drink they just gave her the same drink in a different glass. There was only one rude waiter for the whole floor and they only played Armenian music.

Well..... Where do we start....I am a bit confused to the mixed reviews about this place, so I ventured off to see for myself. The evening went pretty smooth being that it was a busy Friday night. I enjoyed the show which I was told is every weekend (going for a second experience soon) and the food was great. Although most of it is meat (being a Brazilian place) they did offer wide variety of meats and there is plenty of appetizers if meat is not really your thing. The one thing I did want to point out is that the Security at the door is a bit rude, I would say a bit of a power trip and there really isnt a front entrance, you have to go through a different door..... All in all, I would recomend this place and give it a 8 out of 10, which would probably be higher if I were greeted at the door with a bit more politeness.................... Don't be fooled!!! It is a place worth trying and seeing for yourself. P.S- Worth the money, I think.

Cons: Weird Security ( Rude), Entrance through anything other than front door a bit strange...

Horrible service, unfriendly, unclassy from the moment you meet the doorman to the end. Cheesy crowd.

I went to this place for my friends party celebration and when I got there the valet parking staff was very rude, they say valet parking is free but it isn't, it's just like being in Brazil full of crooks. The service was horrible I had to wait for almost 45 minutes to get served and the meat was cold and chewy, it tasted like leftovers and when I asked the waiter to bring me some hot food he went straight to the microwave and reheated it, It tasted chewier when he brought it back. So unless you are ready for the worst dining experience in your life don't go to this place. The drinks are awful too they tasted like rubbing alcohol and the servers were the rudest.

This place is HORRIBLE. I would not recommend it to my worst enemy. Where do I begin. First of all the service was unbareable. I asked for water for our table at 8:00 and recieved it at 9:00. Dinner was supposed to begin at 8:00 and the show was to begin at 9:00. Well by 8:45 all I had to eat was 1 1inch by 1inch piece of meat, that for some reason tasted like liver, and I hate liver. Oh and can't forget the half roten salad that came before that. Luckily even though the meat and the service was horrible I still had 1 thing to look forward too. This was a company party, so it was to be open bar. How can you screw that up? You can...They took about 20-30 minutes to bring drinks back to the table, even just for a beer in a bottle, HORRIBLE!!!!! Unfortunately I read all these reviews on friday, and everything was already planned out, but please believe all that you read about this place, because it is all true. This place SUKS!!!! I would not eat here again if it was the last place on earth.......AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID

Don't Waste you time and money!

I went to this Brazilian restaurant for a party only to find out that the doormen are a bunch of rude people who wanna force you to park your car inside for no reason at all. That was good enough for me to realize that if the rest of the employees were as rude and con artists like these two I was gonna take my business somewhere else.

The service is really horrible. Usually you are out of a resturant in one hour we were there for 2.5 hours because they lang in getting the dishes to you. And their trick is to load you with all the filling stuff first like bread, salad and a creamy (really creamy) broccoli soup, then they finally come out with the meat. But of course they come out with the cheap meats first, so if you do go remember they save the best for last. Or sometimes they don't even bring it out. So you have to wait for them to cook it. Which takes about 20 minutes. After being there for 2 hours we couldn't handle the wait anymore so we left. We also asked for the check and the waitress thought it was more important to clear tables, when the resturant was empty! So we went to the front to get our check. Horrible service and REALLY EXPENSIVE!

I love everything about this place. From the shows on Fridays to the food. It is a little bit pricey but there is so much variety when it comes to food. The music is great if you love to dance salsa.....if you don't then this is not the place for you.
Sundays are good for the Salsa experts...and beginners. I would recommend this place to anyone.

This isn't the best Brazilian steakhouse but no other has such a great environment. The food is good and they don't hold out on the alcohol in your drinks, on Friday and Saturday theres a cool dinner show with Samba, Capoeira, Tango, and Circus performers. After the show the resturant turns into a club with a mix of international beautiful people. I have a good time every time I go.

My friends and I decided to go to Rio on a Friday for a girls night out. To start off they charged $20/person to get in. After paying we went in to find out there were a total of maybe 20-30 people. Thinking maybe it's too early and we have already paid we'll stick around. Well, things only got worse...the food was horrible. The drinks honestly tasted like rubbing alcohol. The worse part was no one ever showed up...we could of had a much better experience hanging out in my backyard and would of saved a lot of money. If you're thinking of going to Rio...just keep in mind your going to hate yourself in the morning!

I don't recommend this place. The food is not too bad, but there are better places to eat Brazilian food. I've been there four times (I didn't give up right away): Once for dinner, once for cocktails, and twice to go dancing. The salsa afternoon/evenings on Sunday are good. Immigrants love this place. So it's great if you want to hang out with people from other cultures. But as for me, I'm no longer interested.

A couple of friends and I went to Rio very recently for drinks and appetizers. The first con we noticed was the horrible service by the doormen who require you to valet park your car without explanation and insisted "that's our policy." It is however complementary. The inside reeked of leftover beef and sausage and we decided to skip appetizers. The cosmos taste like rubbing alcohol/cough syrup and the "Liquid Sex" which supposedly is a Hypno mix, was so disgusting I couldn't even take 2 sips. The music was mostly nonstop hardcore Spanish. Also, the crowd was pretty diverse and it's a major pickup spot and there's usually a flock of guys standing near the high platform bar area, overlooking the dance floor. Overall, this place is too hyped up for it's own well being. There are way too many other better places in LA to waste your time here.

If this is the representation of Brasil, never go to that country, this is the most rude and unfriendly place I've ever been... nothing is good ... cold food, unfriendly waitress, too expensive for no food at all... my dogs at home eat better.

First off, I'm an avid user of citysearch for dining out (very often!), and I would normally avoid a place that has multiple negative reviews and a lower rating than I usually dine at. I was forced here for a party. The meat is simply disgusting, greasy, and just plan bad. The turkey wrapped in bacon seemed sinfully tasty, but once I tried it, it was like a bad sausage--even though I only ate one bite, I could stil taste it an hour later, overpowering everything else. The mojitos are good, for sure...but I had to keep ordering them just to get the flavor of the bad food out. The dancers that come out are cheesy but fun, and it's nice to have the place turn into a club while you eat..but there are much finer places than this. Overall, my experience was as expected: bad. $60 a person.
