I had to go to the BBB to get my complaint resolved, which it isn't completely.
Case # 20034567 Los Angeles BBB

Basically I agree with all of these negative reviews, they are liars, they hold money needed to be refunded for not good reason (which is why I had to involve the BBB), they sweet talk you then stab you in the back. By the way, the BBB got them to give me my refund the day Public Motors received something from them, so if you are having issue, I strongly recommend you contacting the BBB to get it resolved.

I bought a car mid-April. My issue had to do with the autogap insurance which I was lied to about and told that the bank financing our car was requiring it. It was a $895 fee!!!!, which I found out later, the finance people working at the dealership make the profit from selling this Auto-gap policy. I was told I had 30 days to cancel and the money would be refunded within 90 days. I figured out the very next day after buying the car that we did not have to have this and complained and tried to cancel it. A 109 days later and only because I contacted the BBB did I actually get my refund.

Sally, the customer service manager, curtly told me, after I found out this was an in house problem (refunding the money) as the contact was never submitted to the company that process the contracts and I was wondering why it wasn't expedited any since they lied to me about it, that "any refund takes 90 days". This outraged me because she was wrong - the cancellation form states, "MAY TAKE UP TO 90 days", which implies it could be sooner. But it definitely doesn't say, "90 days or until our accounting department gets around to it!!" -- seeing as it ended up being 109 days! And there is something wrong with signing a contract (the Autogap contract) that states that a customer should receive a refund in 60 days, but then Public Motors choose to make it 90.

I was also upset that I had to pay interest on this $895 for 4 1/2 months, so BK the general manager told me (and apparently Sally had never told him I had any type of complaint until this point 4 months later) that they would refund me the $16.20 in interest and give me a free tank of gas or refund me an oil change as an apology.

I closed my complaint with the BBB because Public motors had refunded the Auto-Gap and *was going to pay me* the interest I accrued on my account which I had asked for from them (and give me a tank of gas as an apology, which I didn't ask for). So therefore I was going to be satisfied.

However, when I submitted my tank of gas for a refund (which they were going to pay me for with the interest I was promised) they are telling me now that they will not pay me unless I sign something with them which says, among other things, "I, my name, purchased a vehicle from Public Motors, had a dispute and Public Motors resolved it. I am very satisfied with the way Public Motors handled the transaction. I agree not to discuss this settlement or to slander or disparage Public Motors at any time, either verbally or in writing, or by any communication on the internet."

I refuse to sign anything that say that as I am "very satisfied with the way Public Motors handled the transaction" - a matter that is only semi-resolved and only because I involved the BBB. And I do not want to remove anything I have written about this company because it's truth (not slander or disparaging) and others should know what they did by having a record of it on the BBB or other places that asks for reviews of the company. I am very sure I am not the only one who this has happened to - others just probably never questioned the extra cost or thought it was necessary as well.

As a result of signing the form they sent me I would have to agree to remove the google review that I did on their company as well as this complaint. So the way I look at it, they told me they would pay me the $16 and offered me a tank of gas, not as an apology, but rather as a way to shut me up.

When I wrote and asked Sally about it, saying that no one told me at any point that I would need to sign something like this, she told me it was a generic form they use as a settlement agreement. If that is the case, they should have told me I was going to have to sign something like that, but 2 phone calls from the general manager and several emails back and forth with the customer service manager and no one said a word. I asked her to have BK, the general manager, call me to discuss this further.

That was a week ago and no one has called me to discuss this. I can only conclude that they do not want to completely fix this situation of my husband and I being lied to by several people in their company, most directly the finance manager. That is very poor customer service on their part.

Read carefully all these reviews listed here and don't buy a car from here!!

WOW. I am truely amazed at this post. Mainly because its the EXACT same thing that happened to me.
Bought a 02 Ford Explorer, The day after i bought it i was driving down the highway and the Check Transmission light came on. I went through a whole ordeal where they had not processed the paperwork for the warranty, and actually had the balls to tell me that i had to pay the deductable. .
Sally has to be the worst when it comes to customer service, she is always "in a meeting" or "on a call" or they just put me through to her Voicemail and i never receive a call back. I Moved from california to MN and sure enough the transmission went out again!
. They say you can name your price and they will call the bank and see if they will accept it. I named my price just a little low, the bank supposedly accepted it. we started the paperwork, I had to transfer money in my bank account to pay the Down Payment, and we look at the paperwork and its $1000 OVER what the sticker price was. When i asked them about it. they replied with "Well being that your not paying cash for the car you cant get the lower price." Worst company ever.

Pros: They are Best at Having the Worst Customer Service.

Cons: They never return calls.

False advertising, unsafe vehicles, ridiculous lies, unwillingness to help with their problem vehicles.
Bought on 03/01/2010 and transmission went on 03/02/2010 in less than 100 miles. Bought an extended warranty only to be told we are not in the system and it's a pre-existing condition.
DO NOT EVEN SET FOOT ON THIS POOR EXCUSE FOR A USED CAR LOT.
Dishonest, false everything, they claim a 115 point inspection but it's more like a 5 point look over.
Save your money, time and possibly your life...DO NOT GO TO PUBLIC MOTORS in SANTA ANA. They don't even return phone calls until you notify the police of their fraudulent activity.

A lie that at best wastes one's time, and that may cost you a lot of money too if you are not quick on your feet!
OC Public Motors should be flagged out of sites that honestly advertise used cars. I can not agree more with the person who wrote below: IT'S FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. Each and every step!

It is the more unfair because a used car buyer is mostly someone with a tight budget. And when 10 good deals pop up for the same bussiness you feel that you owe it to yourself to check that out... even if it is 50 miles away! That's how they establish their pool to fish for the suckers, based on YOUR NEED.

If you are reading this, most likely they made their attempt at you, you are a potential 'fish'. Good for you if you read reviews before going shoping (I for one didn't, so I get to write them;) If you have doubts (as well you should), keep reading, i'll explain how it works in detail - where the devil is:

1. A price about 5% less then the market catches your eye on some search site like AutoTrader, and so you take notice of the Public Motors of Orange County. As they put it "one of Southern California's LARGEST RESELLERS OF QUALITY PRE-OWNED CARS". OR just the largest crock around on this market!

2. So naturally you start to investigate. You visit their site, call them, or both. Either way you only get the good stuff. (Unless you read the reviews). Their main point is about the price: "Public Motors offers a new and exciting way for you to buy the car of your choice, at the PRICE YOU WANT TO PAY! ", their site says. What they promise and advertise online is "prices $1,000s below retail".

3. Thus far it looks fairly easy and legitimate: giantic dealer, great prices... and if you call, good customer service too. You ask if they still have the car/s of interest, they "check" and YES, HURRAY, come see it ! (Two other reviewers wrote about that, so I won't go into it.) But also there is this special "event" going on today too... what event? AUCTION DAY! [In fact they have an auction evey Wednesday and Sunday, so there is nothing special about it: they are an auction house, not a dealership!]

4. You may ask how this auction thing works. Beware, their answer is well crafted to lure you even if you have some doubts. You may find auctions exciting or you may feel insecure, but Public Motors has the thing for everybody : OPEN auction for all vechicles, then SILENT auction for what did not sell right off the bat (which means you can take your time, check the cars and make an offer, and in 5 min. you know if it is accepted!) Sounds good, right?

So, here's how it works for real:

You get there, and one sour chick gives you a registration form for the auction, which asks for all you personal info and then has a lot of small print, inclung the fact that you agree they can use your phone and e-mail for comercial purposes. Did I mention the sour chick? I mean no one to argue with. Finnally, we left the info blank and signed everything else just to get in.

OH, and I forotten to mention that at the gate we were introduced to the Auction FEES which no one had said anything about over the phone: $299 + 3% of the car price plus all registration expences. So if you add that to an advertised price of 3000 you get about 3500... Oh well, you just have to bid low enough to compensate, right? Wrong! WHY? I'm running out of space, so please read the comments :)

Pros: NONE!

Cons: Last thing you want when trying to buy a used car is a lie.

As a recent college grad in dire need of a cheap & reliable car, i was attracted to OC Public Motors beacuse of their economic prices that they so heavily advertise online. I was discouraged after reading the reviews and seeing their 1/5 rating on here, but still curious nonetheless. I decided to make the journey up to Santa Ana and check it out.

The reason I am even writing a review is to hopefully save others the time & hassle of even going ot this place. This place is grimey & disgusting with horrible customer service and aggressively obnoxious (and seemingly amateur) "salesmen".

After checking out their online inventory and taking notes to come prepared, I found not a single familiar car on the lot. (ie none of the cars I was interested and had written down were available)

The entire process is confusing, and most of their cars have very evident imperfections (scratches, bumps, etc). The only car I even turned on and agreed to sit in shook like crazy and seemed extremely unstable. I decided against even test driving it.

Still, the obnoxious sales rep we were paired up with insisted on checking out financing options and seeing the lowest price that the car could potentiall go for. Still curious, I played along to see how the system worked and what kind of pricing they could come up with. He promised a 5 minute quick bid to see the lowest they would go. Instead, he put a Bid Sheet infront of my face to sign and actually make a real bid . He was completely unable to communicate clearly and was extremely obnoxious, aggressive, and mal-humored.

Even as a poor and struggling college grad, I would prefer to deal with normal human beings and clean dealerships then EVER go back to this place.

Here's the gripe I have with this place. If you look on autotrader they have 5 or 6 cars right now for under $5k. Looking on Kelly Blue Book you'll see that these cars are $1k-$2k below their value. I called, scheduled an appointment to see a specific car, then when I got there an hour later they said that car was sold two hours ago. Um, why did I just waste my time driving down to see you if the car I wanted to see isn't there? I was on the phone with someone who told me the car was available. "They get their call sheets at the beginning of the day, so they may or may not know if the car's been sold." Right. Then I asked to see another car, and they said it hadn't arrived yet even though the listing has been online for a while now...sounds like a bait and switch to me.

Honestly I felt like they were trying to get people in with cheap offers that aren't really available. Don't waste your time on this place. I was assured that the listings would be taken off within the hour. Checked them this morning and they're still there.

Oh and what the hell is up with this site giving it 4 stars when all of the reviews so far have given it 1 star? Citysearch needs to get it together.
