We had an excellent meal here with an unbelievably yummy dessert. Definitely try the banana-marshmallow wontons, they are delicious! You can't beat the view, it's so relaxing to sit out on the deck and watch the sun set. It's a great little get away from San Francisco. We had a perfect evening here, and we'll be back soon!

One of the best places for a pint and some food along this section of the coast. Plenty of deck chairs ensure everyone can enjoy the view. Thoughtfully, a large cache of blankets is available in case the fog starts to roll in.

Cons: Foggy Days...

After watching the Ghost Hunters episode there is now way I would pay to eat there. My wife and I are coming out to San Francisco and will eating and spending our money somewhere else.

We ate here on a Girl Scout trip after a long day at the beach. We were very tired and it was late yet the restaurant took us in and seated our large group and fed us well.
I had a great pasta with pesto and shrimp.

This place has an amazing view of the ocean. On the weekends they have live music and happy hour. I would go and order some appetizers and listen to the music.

It is a little over priced, but you are paying for the music and the view.

I am not sure if I came to the same restaurant that any of these people came to, who wrote reviews before me.
I did not come here to find a ghost, I came here to surprise my husband with an amazing brunch and stunning views, and that is exactly what I did.
I made a reservation and we were one of 3 tables to be seated in the front room at 11am this Sunday. Unlimited mimosas were delish, the fresh baked pastries were so yummy I think we had 3 servings, then we both ordered something different. I had Croque Madame and my husband had Gingersnap Pancakes, we loved every decadent bite and I think we were full into the next day!
Beyond the food being perfect, the views were stunning overlooking the ocean, even though it was a cloudy day the views were overwhelmingly perfect. I will be back for a drink to sit outside with my dog and a blanket. I am baffeled by these reviews before me, check this place out and you will be pleasantly surprised!

I loved this place. AMAZING view. Great atmosphere and the menu you get with all the history of the place is really fun. The food was great and the seafood was really fresh. One of the best places in HMB!

This place was amazing! The food, drinks and experience was great! I was dragged by co-workers to have dinner and check out the haunted little restaurant. I didn't see the big deal because I just came for a free dinner.

When we drove up, it was impossible to find parking. It was dark and foggy around the area, so it made it look even more haunting. But I really like the place. I was telling my husband about the restaurant and the food they served, but we haven't gotten a chance to go there for a romantic dinner.

PROS: Great food, drinks and place for tale scare to keep excitement with significant other.

CONS: Pricey & limited parking spaces

Slow service. Low quality meals. Iceberg lettuce salad = a head of lettuce, two strips of bacon, a couple of cut up cherry tomatoes, a picked onion and some dressing. We used to love this restaurant. Very lowly rated in our books now.

Did the person who wrote the rebuttle to the Ghost Hunter Episode see the show? The chef told Ghost Hunters of activity that included "Swinging Lights" and "Laughing in the Ladies Room" and claimed it as paranormal. Come on. Completely rediculous Moss Beach Distillery.

Reviewed both the Ghost Hunters episode and the Distillery's rebuttal on their site, and am appalled at the lack of remorse and absolute smug response by executive chef. I will make it a point to inform familiy, friends and co-workers to not support this establishment.

i wouldn't recommed this place either.i also saw the ghost hunters eposide where they lied and said it was haunted when it was proved that it was cleary a deliberate HOAX used to get more customers.in the description it says that the customers laugh it off.well im not laughing it off and im sure that was put their by an employee or the owner himself.
what else are they lying about? am i having steak or dog meat? is it really fine wine im drinking or is it cheap stuff from wal-mart?
they lied to the public about their FAKE ghost story so they very well could be lying about alot of other things as well.i wont go back there again and dont recommend them at all.the food isnt that good and knowing the place is rigged with stuff to make you think there are ghost is just plain childish and insults the intelligence of its customers.
any buisness that lies to your face and wont budge even when confronted with the evidence that was found is not worth trusting again.their hoax ghost story was also on Unsolved Mystery show.yes their lies go that far back!
makes me think that they might also have cameras to watch me in the bathroom or something.no,im not over reacting.
just go to youtube online and watch the episode and then see for youself.

Pros: just an average place in terms of food.but it is pretty.

Cons: the whole blue lady ghost was a confirmed HOAX.

So we went there on a recommendation saying the view was nice, good food, etc. The view was nice, and the brunch menu was tasty. But I would never go back mainly because it was waaaaay to expensive for what you get. Sure there's a frosted flake french toast, and it was good, but nothing that warranted a $60 bill for 2 people. Oh, and the hashbrowns were the microwaved kind!...yeah, the kind that you get at McDonalds! How hard is it to make your own hash browns, especially for that price?

Let's be realistic this place may have great food and a great location and even great ghost stories but how can you believe in there ghosts after watching Ghost Hunters. I was planning on going with my wife for dinner but after watching The episode on June 4th 2008 and seeing all the gadgets they use to make you think it is haunted give me a break. I don't know if I want to eat at a place that has no morales or respect for the cliental that eats there. I wounder if they would think it funny if after I ate my meal I tried to pay with fake money mabey monopoly money it's as real as the Blue Lady.

In response the appearance of MBD on Ghost Hunters, on SciFi:
Summary:
MBD brought in the team from Ghost Hunters on SciFi and lied to them about reported hauntings and then tried to cover it up.

Review
MBD mocked people trying to do a job. Whether their food is good or not is not even relevant for me. They tried to mislead people who were investigating on good faith. The folks at Ghost Hunters traveled all the way across the country to check out this farce. Too bad they wasted their time.

And then, the response from the restaurant is to post some long winded Soliloquy on their website, without the ability for readers to respond or counter. This written trash attempted to attack the credibility of the GH team that had on good faith taken what they had been given, and had in all fairness been mocked. Why would the GH team do any historical review, why would they research the Internet to see if something is real? The poor guy who represented the restaurant was the worst. he mentioned all the "haunted" things and then acknowledged later that they were all fake? What????

This was a publicity stunt of this restaurant, and it failed miserably. Why would you support a restaurant by buying their food when they openly display that they have no morals or ethical standards. Even if their food is edible, there are better restaurants with harder working more ethical people in the Half Moon Bay Area. (My favorite is Barbara's Fish Trap in Princeton, and the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is doing some great things with their new chef). Do not take your $$$ to this mockery of a restaurant.

I have been there once, (Before seeing this mockery on TV) and have not made it back. Must not be that great. Weird that I have been to Barbara's about 10 times since then.

Ridiculous.... Give your money to businesses that deserve it

Too bad I had to put a star there. I'm disgusted that for a place that claims to be haunted for generations, you have to submit to cheap dimestore theatrics. Oh wait, you have your "certified psychic" on your site disclaiming the Taps Team regarding their recent 'ghost hunt.' And we're supposed to believe someone that is on the payroll of your restaurant, right? Heh - your so-called 'Psychic" is just as cheap and disgusting as your Manager who, by the way is on the same payroll right?

It's disgusting that TAPS - WHO YOU DID NOT PAY TO BE THERE - drove all the way from RI to be there to sincerely help you, and all you did was invite them to a cheap carnival. Gas is expensive, time is priceless, and according to the other reviews here your food and service are as disgusting as your theatrics.

What a cheap-shot at advertising your pathetic restaurant.

Oh yeah, ask your "psychic" if he can see what I'm holding up...it's personally for him...

Not a good example of lovely San Mateo county night life. It's basically over priced food and seafood you can get anywhere else. Yes, the bar is lovely and everyone's got a story (or knows someone who had an experience there) but the view of the ocean is the only redeeming feature. You're paying for a view and if you buy enough booze at the bar you may actually enjoy the place.

As for the 'Ghost story'- I was just informed that a TV show called "Ghost Hunters" investigated and debunked many of the unexplained 'ghost activity' as mechanical hoaxes!- (this as of 6/4/08) The head chef (Spencer Grey) didn't seem to care he's been jerking people around with these stunts.

Pros: The View, there's free Oxygen outside, and Booze (if you have cash to burn)

The owners of the Moss Beach Distillery have no problem with going on a nationally broadcast show, Ghost Hunters and have absolutely no problem LYING about their supposed "HAUNTED" establishment. What does that say about their restaurant, their supposed HAUNTED establishment (Which is just a funhouse filled with tricks to dupe the public into stopping to buy their cheap food) and the owner's ability to do ANYTHING in order to make a buck! These people are disgusting!!

If you like the history of the ghost (Blue Lady), one of this restaurants claims to fame. The restaurant was featured on the program Unsolved Mysteries. Now they have been featured on the Sci-Fi show Ghost Hunters. They contacted the TAPS team of RI to come and help prove that their restaurant is in fact haunted. Taps gladly did as they asked and was lied to about the kinds of activity. Spencer Grey who is the exc. Chef did the intro with Taps and said "I really finally want someone to help put to rest all these questions that haunt us."
Well I hope he got his answer. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF UNMORAL FRAUDS. They ask TAPS to come across the country to HELP them. Pulling them from their families and lives in RI. Just to be thrown onto a bad fake fun house. With speakers in the ceiling with a ghost women laughing to mechanical swinging lights. I think TAPS should show them the same respect the Chef gave them and send the owner a nice big invoice for the travel expenses and labor....... The Chef was enough of a J*rk, when confronted and asked why he didn't tell them of the devices..... He said, "Oh I forgot about them." lying to their faces. This is one of the most dishonest things I have seen in awhile....

They advertise that the place is haunted by the "LADY IN BLUE". TAPS went in to try and find something paranormal. They found quite a bit but it wasn't paranormal. Moss Beach Distillery is nothing but a cheap funhouse trying to give it's patrons a fake thrill. If you want to go because of the food, that is fine. If you're going to try and see the "BLUE LADY" then do not be fooled by the circus tricks they try to pull.

I have not eaten here but reviews that I've read have not been good. Most state that food is nothing special and is over priced. There are several reviews that are very good which I assume were written by someone that is attached to the restaurant due to the attempts to glorify the "so-called" ghost by calling out the TAPS team to investigate and hopefully validate their claims. Anyone that watched the Ghost Hunter show that aired on June 04, 2008 got to see that these claims are false and that the restaurant has been rigged to appear haunted in an attempt to attract people to come and eat there. I have no choice but to think that the food can not stand on it's ownf and that they are having to resort to gimmicks which I personally find to be insulting. The executive chef should be embarrassed by his attempt to decieve and for this I will never visit this estabishment. This was a nice try to get some free advertising that back fired in a major way.

After watching the television broadcast of Ghost Hunters this evening, it was disappointing to see that the distillery is rigged with devices to attract visitors that would enjoy paranormal events, they not knowing that these devices were put there, "knowingly" by your establishment...a device in the women's bathroom that sets off a "woman's laughter", a "glowing face" behind the restroom mirror, chandelier's moving due to a device also bringing that about...I enjoy watching that team of hardworking paranormal investigators, proving or disproving paranormal events on locations they travel to...did you think they were there for a little "fun house" investigation???, and why wasn't it initially brought to their attention that these items were rigged ???...did you not think that they would further investigate and find out your farce ???...these are intelligent individuals, that DO their job very well...I had lived in California for over 47 years, and due to your deceptiveness, I will never visit your distillery/restaurant, nor recommend it to others to visit...I wouldn't put it past the establishment to rigging up a white sheet by the cliff's edge at night, shine a blue beacon/light upon it, and there you have it, it's your famous "Blue Lady"...the management/owner of Moss Point Distillery/Restaurant definitely has egg upon their face this evening, and well deserving of it...

Moss Beach Distillery is a beautiful restaurant on a beautiful cliff overlooking a beautiful bay. And it's haunted... but that's the appeal!

I really like this place, not just for the ghost story, but the seafood is fresh and delicious, and the view is absolutely gorgeous. It's a tad bit pricey here, but it's worth it. I recommend the crab cakes.

My wife and I have been coming to the Moss Beach Distillery for years (we got engaged on the beach just north of the distillery) and have always loved the view, the ghost story, the rockin' cocktails, and snuggling up under the wool blankets on the patio. The romantic granduer of the coastline view at sunset is truly remarkable on a beautiful day. Plus, the history and the slightly old-fashioned charm have always held our interest -- the place used to be a speakeasy and rum-smuggling drop-off in the 20's! After a couple of disappointing visits (food overpriced and lackluster service) last year we stopped coming with any regularity.

On a whim last weekend we dropped in to a packed full house! Great, fun, mixed crowd of tourists, locals, European travellers, and a few grizzly bikers! View at sunset was fantastic as always. Service was friendly, efficient, and professional, especially considering how busy it was. Food quality has improved substantially, with some new interesting iternational twists -- greek style grilled salmon was tender and flavorful, halibut dish over apricot couscous was exceptional (although slightly overcooked and a bit dry), grilled New York steak with truffle butter very yummy, and crab cakes some of the very best I've ever tried (and I've had them from Baltimore to Portland), just loaded with three kinds of crab! Chocolate pancakes (WHA?) for dessert with caramel was a killer way to round out the meal.

I must say the Distillery is back in the swing of things. We were quite pleased as we've always had a soft spot in our heart for the MBD. The manager on duty (very pleasant and eager to please by the way) said they have a new chef on board. Keep up the good work!

Is it my imagination or did prices get more reasonable?

Pros: killer view, excellent fresh food, history, ghost story

Cons: can be very busy, reservations on weekend night critical

This used to be one of out favorite restaurants and now they have succeeded in over-pricing themselves. I was not sure if it was because we went on a Monday afternoon, but the dining room was closed and we had to order at the bar. No big deal since we were going outside to enjoy the view and cuddle up in the blankets. However, over $30 for a couple bowls of clam chowder and one order of fries? Give me a break. Their food isn't that great and the view isn't worth the price. If it wasn't a special week for us, I would have walked out. This will be our last time.

This was once one of my favorite jaunts to visit to unwind from the city stress. I've sat outide even during rain to enjoy the once edible food and drinks. On my last visit my experience was so terrible that I am never going back to this place again. I ordered "The fish Platter" which I expected to have an array of delcious assortments of seafood to enjoy but what arrived was a greasy over cooked and undefinable mess. I ate two bites and then tossed it. What was even worse was their calamari. It tasted like the cooks forgot to change the oil in weeks and was in a puddle of oil. Disgusting. What was the most infuriating was that we bought those two poor exuses for food and a couple of pints of beer and our bill was $71.00??? We shelled out over seventy bucks for garbage on picnic flatware and an arrogant bartender to boot. We decided to fill out a comment card and give it to the manager in hopes they would reconcile our problem with even our phone numbers and email addresses included and they did nada. I even contacted their website's events manager to get satisfaction and it just seems like they just don't give a damn. What a shame to ruin such a cool place. It is now IMHO just a lousy tourist trap with over priced and inedible food and attitude. Wow....

Cons: You name it, they've failed

It's hard to believe now, but for years, this was one of the greatest locals places anywhere--great food, great view, relaxed atmosphere. I used to go there 2-3 times a week! I had my wedding reception there, as did a number of my friends. It felt that comfortable. About ten years ago, the current greedhead owner bought the place and pretty clearly had an agenda to turn the place into a tourist haven. He succeeded--shamelessly promoting the ghost, raising prices, assembly-lining the food, hiring arrogant, pretty boy bartenders, and rushing diners to "turn over "the tables faster, and utterly robbing the place of its character. The ocean view is still there, but the view ain't worth it. This is now the worst restaurant on the coast. Don't go. Don't ever go. I live four blocks away and haven't been there in 10 years.

How excited I was to take two of my friends from out of town here the eve of 02/18/06. First I had to reserve the table with a credit card and we were warned not to be late. We arrived on time, the food was average and very expensive and 10 min after I paid the bill we were asked to vacate our table so the next people could get in!! Never have I paid over $150 for a meal and been asked to leave before finishing my coffee! Please don't patronize a place that only cares about getting the next table seated.

I've been to the Moss Beach Distillery several times, and the experiences has been fantastic. The coquile de mar and cider brined pork are my favorites. The patio is an awsome place to get a Margarita and watch the sunset. The atmosphere is fun and a lot less stuffy then what you typically get in the City. Overall, it is always a great time.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. The food is fabulous as well as the service and the views are great. What more could you want in a restaurant. My friends and I always have a good time when we visit the restaurant, whether it is for lunch or dinner.

The view drives the prices. When was the last time you say a meatloaf on a menu for $29.00? Or how about this, a restaurant where most menu items run around $30.00 on average and water is served only by request. There is also a $25.00 minimum dining charge per person excluding alcohol. The restaurant is frequented by tourists who will probably never return thus the lack of service or quality of food. However, if you want a fabulous view and have little concern for service or quality of food this is the spot for you. I recently read the restaurant is going up for sale in January 2006. Lets hope the new owner takes note of the many negative reviews and makes some positive changes.

What an unbelievable waste of money. First of all, most of the entrees cost upwards of $30, which in the bay area should get you a great gourmet meal. Instead, I nearly found myself laughing when they brought the food out. I swear the corn on the side of the tough, slimey prime rib was from a can. My date's "halibut" was a sad, rectangular slab of grey that tasted like it had been doused in sugar in order to disguise the fact that it clearly had been frozen and thawed. Like other reviewers noted, these people aren't relying on repeat customers-- though our service, I must admit, was alright. All in all, everyone in my group walked out feeling like we had just been conned.

We stumbled onto the Distillery by complete accident on a business trip to the area. I was extremely pleased with both the food and the service. There is no way to describe the view. The food price was slightly elevated but I felt it was absolutely on par with any other restaurant on the coast and the food can actually hold up to the price. I was so impressed with the whole experience that I have already promised my wife I would take her there for wine and dinner on their patio.

This restaurant is the biggest TOURIST TRAP! They know they don't rely on repeat business, so they treat their customers like cattle. The busboy tried to clear my plate while I was still eating (literally had the fork in my mouth), our waitress set the bill down in the middle of dessert. We were sat at 4:30 p.m., so there wasn't a desperate need for a table, regardless, we were rushed out of there. The food is mediocre and extremely over priced. The filet mignon was $40.00. The tuna appetizer was of poor grade. The wine list is limited and the markup is outrageous. We could have eaten at the Ritz Carlton for the same price, with better service, and atmosphere. The interior is very shabby too. I understand that it is suppose to be part of its charm, but it really is just grundgy.

Just had to throw in my opinion. I love this restaurant and couldn't understand why it would have an overall rating of 8.4 with such poor written reviews. It is a very special place and worth going out of the way for. The view doesn't get any better that this and the service is wonderful. It is one of the most romantic restaurants I've ever been to.

The menu selection was poor and most of the entrees and appetizers were overpriced (even for the bay area). I got sick about fifteen minutes after eating the salmon. Luckily no one else in my party ate the salmon and had to make repeated visits to the restroom like I did. On the upside, the view is great and we had very good service. Unfortunately I would only recommend this restaurant as a place to go for drinks.

Worst service ever!! I will never go back. We didn't even eat our food because we were so upset at the way we were treated by the bartender and then the girl that claims she was a manager. We ended up down the road and had Tres Amigos Taqueria for 15.45 with a few beers included. The manager of the Distillery charged us over 6 bucks and we didn't even get through the first drink before we walked out. Wouldn't of walked out but the manager was so rude we felt uncomfortable if we would have stayed. They were also asking over 35 bucks for a filet. Also, they offered us a table in the side room because we had kids and they don't even have a waitress on the side. Full menu but the bartender I guess is too lazy to walk around and served the extremely overpriced dinner.
