Over some glasses of malbec from Bautista Simona, chef and co-owner of Apertivo, Ken Cassinelli, smiles about his food like a first crush. He is telling me that it??s the puttenesca pasta, no, the lamb shank, that needs to be tried. While we discuss their relative merits, the only true option has been jogging around us since the beginning: get them both.

In fact, the modus operandi of Apertivo is indulge, something very easy to do when the prices bludgeon every other restaurant in North Park. Having gone to other small plate hot spots and in conjunction here with low cost, the expectation rests on the description being literal, an inch or so of meat on a saucer. Somehow Apertivo surprises with both size and price; a few plates were enough to slate my hunger. While I wonder how this is the case, the realization sets in that if it were not, Ken wouldn??t be having as much fun. Every aspect of gustation should be enjoyable, or else, why bother?

And that really is why Ken makes the plates he does. The normal Italian meal is so large but full of flavors, he briefly informs me while keeping his grin, so while you enjoy an entre, another passes looking just as appetizing. Of course you can??t try it, so much food already sits in-front of you; a veritable problem. And yet the solution was simple to him: shrink the giant plates to a still healthy size and thus provide Italian inspired cuisine that still allows you to experience a variety of dishes.

Such offerings seem incredible, but Janie Losli, co-owner of Apertivo, tells me the model keeps working as she walks by to greet some customers. While there are a few waiters, Janie and Ken give the first welcome, shaking hands or getting a hug in the case of return diners. The chatting owner is by no means a rare sight, but few talk with such good spirits. Not surprising since they are enjoying themselves, whether having a glass of wine with a table or stopping by to make sure everything is perfect. And when the owners are jovial, chances are you will be too.

This restaurant is great for meeting with friends. They offer a wide selection of Tapas that you can share with your friends. Their bread is delicious and always fresh made. Their wine list is excellent. You can select one of their wine flights or you can create your own! Very affordable too!

when i go to the tapas bar i always get something with prosciutto because that seems to be the best with booze! This placed delivered with the prosciutto wrapped shrimp that is cooked and served with an excellent sauce. Much of what is offered is typical but delicious still. Dont forget to order some wine or any other alcohol to accompany all the delicious tapas!

Apertivo is a prime example of the good things happening to North Park these days. The area is filled with revitalization, new restaurants are opening up all over the place that you wouldn't expect. As a result of being in North Park, the owner wisely (and fairly) priced the food and the wine list so as to not scare the neighborhood away. There is a huge variety of (mostly) Italian-style tapas. Some of my favorites include the lasagne, the asparagas, and the calamari! They have a great wine list, with, I believe, at least 60 wines available BY THE GLASS! How many restaurants offer a good wine list by the glass?! The prices on the wine are also reasonable, and they have some good stuff from all over the world, not just California. The place does feel a bit odd when you first walk in. It's a big open room, and there are no dividers or partitions to break up the noise, so it gets VERY loud in there. It's almost like being in a bar. I don't really care for the noise level, and I wish the owner would do something about it. But, I'm willing to overlook it because I love the food and the wine list. They recently expanded, taking over the space next door, and the service did slow down a bit because I think they were playing a little bit of catch-up, but I'm sure they've probably resolved that since my last visit. Definately a great find in the heart of North Park!
