Can you spell rip-off?? I stopped in to get a bowl of clam chowder. At $6.99 it was pricey but tasty. Then I ordered an Ahi Tuna steak and a Strugeon steak, each at $13.99/lb. Seemed reasonable. They immediately threw away the cash register receipt but after getting charged $56, I asked for the receipt. The fish weighed barely 2 pounds and I was charged $44. I called them and spoke to the owner who told me that "my scale must be off". I will never stop there again and if I could give them zero stars, I would!

I was driving by this local sea food market when I decided to stop and pick up a few things I needed for a diner party that I was having. I first checked out the seafood and prices in the display counter. I than began to give the proprietor my order and asked if he could ice the order since I was not from the area. He started adding to a bag of seafood that was already packed and sitting at the end of the display tray. He than began to tell his employee what to get for me while he tried to sell me a number of things at the other end of the counter. The owner than went to a table that was away from the counter to pack and finished my order as he stated that he was going to give me a better price on a couple of the items. He also stated that he was really going to take care of me. I paid and left a happy customer. Later on when I arrived home and went to unpack the order I realized that I had been overcharged. I look for the receipt and found there was none and as I think back the money went straight to his pocket it never saw a cash register. I was not going to be back in the area for at least a couple of weeks. I had no receipt and a product that was going to be eaten within a day I knew there would be little or no way to recover in this matter. The next day I went to prepare the order for the dinner and found that most of order did not look like it had come from the display counter. I had to throw out approximately 25% of the order because it was nothing more than scrapes and waste that should of been discarded. The size, color and quality of the remaining product was much poorer than what was in the display counter. I usually pay closer attention to things but this proprietor got me. Well as the saying goes ??Let The Buyer Beware? I had just received an old school education. My first thought was to take an unscheduled drive back to the area but I thought this person is not going to care besides he already knows what he is. I have decided to write this review which is an edited version of letters being sent to the Mayor??s Office, City Council, Chamber of Commerce along with a local News Paper. With all of the visitors to this community I can only imagine how many people he rips off.

I was in the area on Thursday and a colleague mentioned this place to check out. I live in Martinez CA which is a good hour away and I was looking forward to quality fish to take home for dinner. Let me also say that I am a trained chef and sommelier amongst other trades. I am currently working as a commercial photographer.
Anyhow there was lots of fresh and smoked fish on display and I dove right in. I asked for one cooked dungeness crab, two salmonburger patties, and a half doz bluepoint oysters. The counter guy asked me to try some wine after I allowed that i like chardonnay with my dungeness. It was ok and he pitched me a case price $15 per bottle and i said no thank you, so he tried out 2 for $30 and i said no. so then he says ok he'll give me a bottle for cost ($15) and i said ok. it is a case where i was tired and he wore me out. It's a barrel fermented New Zealand wine that is way long in the tooth. For those of us who are winos, they did full malolactic fermentation and the wine did not have enough residual acid to age well. The bottle i just opened is a cloudy piss color and quite dead and undrinkable. So, in the first count, bottle variation or "bait and switch", the wine i got was nothing like the wine i tasted.
Moving on, i opened the blue points and they were finest kind. At $10 a dozen they're fairly priced as well. For those of you scoring at home, the market (and I) are 1 for 2 at this point. Next in line for grinding was the crab, and let me tell you it doesn't get any better than this. The crab was perfect. I am a native Marylander and I have eaten a lot of crab of different kinds. After being raised on picking blue crabs, picking a dungeness is so much easier and so much more productive. The single crab i ate, and struggled to finish, oink oink, was 2+ pounds. There is a complex sweetness to good Dungeness that is special. A bargain at $5.99 per pound. We are now two for three. Next day, next menu item - Salmonburger. I asked the man for 2 patties and he gave me four so i froze a couple. I just sauteed one up and had it on toast and it was very good. They use salmon pieces and some firm flesh white fish pieces. Like i said it was very good, but they charge me $16 per pound for it so since i found no Lobster or Beluga Caviar involved i am at a loss at that particular valuation. Final score goes to 2 out of four. THEN THERE IS THE MONEY I WASTED AT THIS PLACE. $54 for one crab, six small blue points, 4 salmonburger patties, and a bottle of brown chardonnay. Ow, ow, ow they got me.

I say, stick to what looks best and DO NOT BUY WITHOUT GETTING PRICE. I never asked what they were charging for the patties, but i didn't dream it was more than $5 per pound, it's fish scraps for goodness sake!

Half Moon Bay Fish Market is one of many places in the area that has fresh fish ready to be sold to customers. While visiting in the area my experience with walking in the market was very pleasant and the fish was very fresh looking and clean. I was very surprise of the variety of fish they have available. The price for fish is moderate but what can yo expect when the fish is brought in fresh.
