A great museum. Whether you are a fan of trains or not, there place in US and California hsitory is indelible and this museum capture all of that with impressive displays of beautifully restored trains. Included with your ticket is a ride on the train outside, I would avoid that unless you have kids. It gets very crowded, so be careful of when you actually come to the museum. Bring your camera and have a blast in old town Sacto while you are at it.

What a great place to take the whole family. If you haven't been you must go, here is the chance to see how our nation was started and settled and how the railroad was such a huge part of our nation's success.

The Railroad Museum is a Sacramento must-see. So many exquisite trains in one location, and a lot of history behind each one. You can climb up into most of the railcars, and even catch an education (but entertaining) film. There's a lot of docents around to answer all your questions. When I took a 5-year-old with me, his favorite part was upstairs, where they have about every model train on display. Even a Leggo Hogwarts Express! He spent hours playing at their Thomas the Train play area, and just had the best time. It's great for families and field trips.

PROS: Very educational and fun
CONS: Price

Over the years, we've visited this train museum countless times. It's a huge favorite of most kids. There are many restored trains on display, including sleeping cars, dining cars and mail cars. The docents are extremely knowledgable about the trains and their history. The store is excellent, offering everything from dishware to videos to a huge selection of books.
Few recommendations: If you visit with a child and will be visiting again, ask for the Caboose Club membership. It's not on the board or advertised anywhere, but it gets a child and adult into the museum for a year for the $10 annual fee. It's an excellent deal. It also allows for a 10% discount in the store. Go upstairs for the amazing toy train display with a wide variety of electric trains running through towns and villages. Be sure to visit the Thomas train tables and let the kids play for a bit. Don't forget that your admission also gets you a ride on the train outside the museum. It's a short, slow ride, but again -- the kids love it!

PROS: Great for kids, inexpensive, great setting
CONS: More hands-on for kids would be good

The California State Railroad Museum is located in the heart of Old Sacramento. It offers a look at the history of the rail road industry. If you were to visit this museum, I would suggest going during the week, as the weekends tend to be a little more crowded.

The Railroad Museum is a great place to take your kids if they are grade school or older. This is a really large museum where you can learn about the history of the railroad and the railroad system. It is located in Old Town Sacramento. I remember we went through one train car and it would jar back and forth giving you the feeling you were actually on a train ride. This is a fun experience for kids that have never ridden on a train. There is a gift shop if you wish to buy any mementos or souvenirs.

The Sacramento Railroad Museum is an astonishing collection of railroad history - cars, engines, artifacts from trains. It is a journey through the turbulent history of the transcontinental railroad, and it does talk about how important Sacramento was in the big scheme of things. This museum is immense, and located in beautiful old town Sacramento right on the Sacramento River. There is a nice gift shop inside for those mementos. It is a place you can take the whole family - there truly is something for everyone here!!

I love the Railroad Museum. It has been one of my favorite museums since I was a young girl. My favorite train inside the museum is the one you can walk through. The workers in there are very helpful and informative. I have never had a bad time there and I still learn something new every time I go.
