Chin's Szechwan Restaurant (LA MESA) is awful!

by kiki b.

LA MESA Chin's. Read at the end of this review, about the tip fiasco. The prices are very high for what you get!!! Instead of entrees being served so ALL of us could share, they were plated up on each individual plate for the person who ordered it, and the entree portions were VERY small. The family dinner came with soup (some kind of non-standard soup with onions and rice), and on each plate was an egg roll, a mound of steamed rice, half an orange, and the paltry entree. The waitstaff was nasty when we asked if they had brown rice. Oh, and if you wanted veggies instead of rice, put down an extra $4.50. We were quite disappointed at them trying to get off cheap, so we didn't leave a tip. The owner (not the waitress!!) came running out to the parking lot and said "You forgot to leave a tip." We said "No, we didn't." She said "You're not leaving a tip?" and we said "No, we're not." We won't be going back, and we'll be telling all our friends!

Yummy!

by Christina P. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,452

My friends took me there for the first time this past summer and I enjoyed it. It's real Asian food, so if you like the Americanized version of Chinese food, this place might not be for you. It's located right next to a hotel so parking sucks and is real tight. But, the restaurant itself is really nice. I tried new dishes and it went both ways. Overall, was a good experience.

Great Food!

by Jonathan G. | insider Insider | Rank: 22,760

I was actually brought to this chain on one of my first visits to San Diego, before moving here. It was one of the most memorable things from that visit. Chin's honey walnut shrimp is amazing and their tangerine beef is very good as well. The presentation is far beyond the price range and the interior is breath taking in most of their restaurants. Definitely a must.
