I agree with the reviewer who was also misled by the exaggerated food scores on Zagat. The service was pleasant although not formal but they were friendly and helpful with picking dishes. The foie gras appetitzer was very good. The pasta appetitzer ($25)
could be had as an entree at $50. I took the former and it was a taste treat. The halibut on soba noodles was tasteless although
the noodles were excellent and interesting. Two of us had filet mignon with foie gras and felt that either the combination was too rich or that the meat was not up to par. Wine meritage was fine.
However saving worst for the the last, we ordered 3 desserts and it was a contest as to which was the worst.
Summary: It was not a bad meal, but I would not return.

Pros: some food good, service informal but pleasant, wine meritage good

Cons: ambience, overpriced, food varies wildly

My husband and I went to Derek's based on a 27 rating in ZAGAT for food. The decor and atmosphere was pleasant. However, the chairs were really uncomfortable. There weren't any armrests.

I ordered the Asparagus Soup, but it lacked flavor. Also, I ordered the Duck with Reduced wine sauce (with Bok Choy). It was okay. My husband got the salad and Venison. He claims it was a really wonderful dish.

Overall, the rating that ZAGAT gave was misleading. They gave a 27 which is equivalent to La Cachette in Century City. However, La Cachette has a wonderful innovative chef, while Derek's is rather boring and uninnovative. It was almost to the point of being "good" hotel food.

One good thing was that the waiter was really wonderful. Never in my life has a waiter been so friendly, attentive and helpful.

Pros: Good Customer Service

Cons: Food is overrated

Derek's IS our favorite restaurant. We have been to ALL the high-end & top self restaurants
in and around Los Angeles and Derek's ranks #1. Derek Dickenson, the owner, prides
himself on making it "the perfect dining experience" for you. Whether it's Valentines day,
a special birthday or just any weekday night, Derek's goes above & beyond to satisfy
your culinary delighjts. Impecable service, & imaginable entrees are the standard. Especially
good is the Foie Gras, & Duck. The service is initmate & pesonable, with a fantastic wine list.
Derek, the owner, with his British charm & sophistication, always stops by to see if everything is, in his words "Perfect". Derek's get our HIGHEST recommendation.

I was prematurely enthusiastic to try out Derek's after reading the reviews and comments only to be grossly disappointed. The service was average, not very prompt. The food was average but about $10-15 more than its worth. The ingredients were dry and coarse. We had a party of 6 and tried the Salmon, Pork Tenderloin, Angus Beef, Linguine and Rack of Lamb. All of which were just average; nothing was truly savory. Both the food and service are overated and over priced.

My wife and I were looking for a nice spot for our anniversary, and a friend highly recommended Derek's. After some searching, we found this cozy gem, hidden in a mini-mall in Pasadena! To our surprise and delight, Derek's turned out 5-star service and cuisine, and we especially loved the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings. The fireplace made for a romantic evening as well. The staff was exceptional and friendly, and our waiter offered great suggestions for some of the lovely but unfamiliar wines and dishes. We had a perfect evening and returned for our anniversary. Definitely a top recommendation!

We found this place, almost by accident, about 6 mos. ago. My friends and I are much younger than the typical clientele, who seem to be in their 50's. We were a bit underdressed, but we were treated very well by both Derek and his wait staff. The Salmon Wellington was amazing. The food is a bit pricey--Cafe Bizou is more affordable and has a less stiff atmosphere.
