Comfortable elegance, excellent food, reasonable prices

by walker s. | insider Insider | Rank: 12,994

Our best friends, Jan and Steve, are down from Montana for the winter. To celebrate we took them to Terra for Restaurant Week. I did a quick My Open Table reservation (http://www.opentable.com ) and emailed our friends a copy. The ladies were on a shopping trip so Steve picked me up and we arrived a few minutes early, just in time for a glass of wine. We had a few sips of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (Nobilo '08) when the ladies arrived. Mathew, our waiter, brought two more glasses. New on the wine list at Terra is this fine wine, Chateau St. Jean Fume Blanc, Lyon Vineyard, Alexander Valley. We tried it and loved it. Highly recommended. First Course: everyone ordered something different:Salty peppery Calamari with garlic, green onion and chili flakes: Steve loved it, Jan and I had a taste, we did too.Coconut dusted Crab Cakes, hot mustard: Jan said they were the best she has ever had; I like my taste too.Pumpkin Raviolis, roasted corn cream, toasted hazelnuts: Dona enjoyed but said the edges were a little tough.House arugula, radicchio, gorgonzola cheese, candied pecans, honey walnut: I loved it, may go again just for this.Second Course: Mathew recommended the pork chop for our second course or his favorite the flat iron steak.Bone-in Pork Chop caramelized sweet potato, apple-golden raisin chutney: Excellent and amazing, three of us had it and loved every forkful. The wedge of sweet potato was fantastic. Steve substituted the roasted garlic potato mash which he said was delicious.Chef Jeff Rossman stopped by our table. We enjoyed talking about shows on the Food Network and if what happened in his kitchen came anywhere near to the TV shows. Chef Jeff said sometimes it was exactly like TV, everything was in rapid motion to meet the full dining room and their catering orders. Check out the picture of Chef Jeff I uploaded to Terra. For Dessert our orders split two and two. We had two of the Samoa Cheesecake with Dulce de Leche cookie crust cinnamon caramel and two of the Caramelized Apple Bread Pudding with butternut squash ice cream. Both were excellent.

The seafood dishes here are incredible, especially the scallops. The atmosphere is great and the service is consistently reliable. Definitely one of my top choices in SD.

Nice place and great food. Everything seems to be made with fresh. Try the lobster mac 'n cheese ... pretty good! The fish is great too. Go and try this restaurant. Service is good too.

When my husband and I were first dating we went to Terra before the Eagles concert at Cox and had a fabulous dinner. The service was excellent too. The food was warm, delicious and comforting with a farm to table flair. We will definitely be back!

Amazing Restaurant

by bwg

My husband and some friends went here for dinner, it was incredible. It was special and intimate. The service was spectacular, and the food was amazing. The price was little high, however totally worth it. It was so incredibly good. Words can not express how much we loved this place. We would absolutly come back.

Pros: Incredible Food

Cons: A little pricy

Very disappointing

by duffpotter

Just went to Terra for Valentine's dinner. The courses we had were: gruyere fondue for 2, lobster bisque, filet and shrimp with a ravioli, mixed dessert of chocolate mousse, strawberry shortcake. It was $60 each without gratuity. The gruyere fondue tasted good but was very watered down. The lobster bisque was very bad. First, it wasn't bisque...no lobster chunks and was just inedible. It was overseasoned (i.e. salty), and tasted like they boiled lobster shells, added salt, and over-reduced the soup. For the first time in my life, I sent food back to the kitchen. They were nice and exchanged it with a spinach and goat cheese salad with raspberry vinaigrette that was very tart/acidic. However, it was an upgrade over the bisque. The filet and shrimp were very well cooked; however, brown cippolini gravy coated both proteins as well as the underlying spinach/ricotta ravioli and overwhelmed the dished with more saltiness. Don't really understand why one would use brown gravy on a filet with shrimp and spinach/ricotta ravioli. It just didn't work for me. Lastly, the dessert...the mousse was good but the strawberry shortcake was disappointing. It wasn't cake at all, rather, it was a hard biscuit like cookie. I needed a sharp knife to cut bites. Lastly, Valentines day dinner should be at smaller tables where you can interact closely with your significant other. Just not the case here. Perhaps the daily menu is better than this holiday menu, but I'll never know because I would never go back. Save your money, and check out another restaurant.

Pros: Cozy feel

Cons: tables too big, thumbs down
