In Short
Like a dark comfy home in Mexico circa the early '70s, this West Hollywood hideaway is decked out with tin flowers, funky wood paneling and faux stained glass. Gregarious waiters decked out in guayaberas sing basic entree choices like beef, chicken and shrimp dishes to guests. The menu consists of five courses--appetizer selections can include cheese quesadillas, shredded beef enchiladas and albondigas soup. A shot of sherry and banana pudding completes the meal.

Amazing, Fun and a Unique Mexican Dinner Experience

by JasonIstrin

Gardens of Taxco is a great meal at a great price. There is no menu, so it's as easy as it can get. First you get vegetables and chips (of course), followed by a small quesadilla, then an enchilada, then your main course with rice beans and tortillas, and at the end with a dessert and a glass of sherry. By the way we got a pitcher of a great margharitta as well. Our bill came to $66. Go and enjoy!

Pros: Fun, Unique, Price

Cons: Cheesy

Great Food, Fun Atmosphere

by RyanAlley

The food is consistently good, as are the margaritas. This is not somewhere you go for a quick meal. Plan on spending some time enjoying the fun, yet slightly cheesy atmosphere.

Pros: Food, Margaritas

Cons: The wait to get a table

Food so good I will drive over an hour one way to Dine Here.

by bevyjo

This has been one of my favorite restaurants since the early 1970's. The waiters are fabulous and so effecient. No Menus is a nice touch. The food is the best I have found. My children have all eaten here at some time and still talk about their experience. My older children have returned on their own over the years. I now live in the Antelope Valley and look forward to my trips to Hollywood to enjoy dinner here. I will come back again and again. The wait can be long but the food makes it well worth the wait.

Pros: Atmosphere and food

Cons: The Wait

Best Restaurant in all of L.A.

by Linus10

One of the best restaurants in all of Los Angeles. They may not have a menu, but all you have to do is tell the great waiters there what you are hungry for and they will take care of you. I highly recommend dishes like Chicken a la Crema or the Shrimp in Cilantro. They also have Salmon at times that is very good. You can get combos as well. Don't be put off by the price because its a rarity these days where you go someplace to eat and leave feeling totally stuffed and with a doggie bag. Once you get the first few courses out of the way along with the unbeliveable chips and salsa, you can barely get through the main course. But what a great midnight snack it makes. And the Wine margeritas are amazing. Lastly, if you become a regular loyal customer, the staff there does not forget you. They have a great memory for little things you might like and are the most friendly waiters I have ever had. Well worth the money and the wait (if you don't make reservations)

Pros: Great salsa, margeritas, chips, all food, sauces, service

Cons: Seating can be tight at times

Yummy

by ultramikey

A date brought me here in 1991 and I have been coming back ever since. I always bring my friends here when they visit and they love it. Never had any complaints. The margaritas are white wine based and great. Almost have that secret recipe figured out! Go hungry cause it is a lot of food. Vegetarians, there's a dish there for you also...but not vegan.

A different kind of Mexican Restaurant

by bayaeric

Found this restaurant by chance. We were driving around, just killing some time really, and saw the restaurant sign. We had to wait a bit for a table; the place was packed. It was interesting to learn that this restaurant does not have a printed menu. The waiter asked what we felt like eating and recited a choice of dishes. My husband and I both ordered the Shrimp "Puerto Vallarta" style, his came with a piece of "Carne Asada", and mine with some kind of stewed beef. Each dish cost about $24.(This price however, includes an appetizer, soup, an enchilada, the main course, dessert and a glass of sherry wine.) We found everythig was delicious, the only disappointment for me was that they use meat tenderizer on their "Carne Asada", which to me eliminates a lot of the "beef" flavor. They have a guitarrist who by the way sings very nicely; very romantic. I would suggest to folks that will visit this restaurant that they tip the singer. I observed that other people didn't, and when I did, it looked as if he appreciated it very much. After that we had a very nice chat and he even sang another song for us. We certainly will go back next time we're in L.A.
Go try it yourselves.

Pros: Having a singer makes it a more enjoyable time

Cons: They charge for parking

OverPriced, Bland Food, Not Worth the Trip

by madisonblues9

I happended upon this place with my girlfriend. We thought initially it was kind of novel with the waiter's reciting the menu - albiet strange there was no menu to look at - my food was just 'fine'; my girlfriend was completely disappointed in her bland meal. Our big shock came at the end of the meai with the BILL - it was $71 for 2 entree's and 2 drinks each - ouch! For $23 per entree; we should of gone to a fine dining restaurant. Waste of money. don't waste your time.

Pros: ambience

Cons: price/quality of food

One of the best mexican spots in L.A ... and that's alot of competition!

by jerm323

This place is great , been coming here for a couple of years now. You start off with some of the best margaritas I have ever had , unique fruity margarita. There are no menus , so the waiter ask what you would like to eat chicken, beef , fish etc.. They serve tasty appetizers before your entree and a dessert to finish off with . The food is excellent and leaves you feeling satisfied. The only reason I gave this place 4 stars is because the neighborhood is fruitier than the margaritas.

Over Rated because it's Hollywood Trendy

by Culari

The food is NOT authentic, I'm Mexican American and it's no where near what you could get even in an Airport Mexican Restaurant. What is good there is their salad, dowsed with canned vegetables, have it with ranch to help give it flavor.

Pros: A place to be seen

Cons: Valet Parking, the wait

Best Tex-Mex Restaurant anywhere!

by GreenBayPackers

We have been fans of Gardens of Taxco since a customer introduced them to me in 1991! We have since returned to eat there every time we visit Los Angeles. The atmosphere is quaint and eclectic, and the food and wine margaritas are excellent! If you are looking for mass produced restaurant chain style food, don't come here. This place is unique all on it's own, and the only downside is there is no parking nearby. Get there early and be hungry, as the portions are ample and the appetizers are scrumptious! There is something for everyone, including chicken, beef and vegetarian. Hands down the best Mexican food we've ever had. Perfect for an adult evening out, as it is thankfully not designed with children in mind.

Pros: Food, service, margaritas!

Cons: No parking - valet only

Really? Meh at best

by MacGyverEats

I'd heard for years that Gardens was "the best Mexican in LA," so i tried it out recently. What a letdown. Other than the very good, but basic, quesadilla starter, the food was not great and certainly not worthy of a return trip. Our server attempted to be cute as he presented the menu to us verbally, but he mostly seemed bored at having given the same spiel 1000 times. Between the 15 of us at the table, I got to sample a little but of every entree option. The steak dishes were overcooked, although not terrible, the chicken dishes were all drowned in extremely thick sauces, and the banana-cream dessert was eaten by 1 person - me (it was just ok; I'd rather have flan or a sopapilla.) I do not understand the gimmick here, you can get better Mexican food for cheaper at Papas & Beer on Melrose.

Pros: Fun atmosphere, good salsa

Cons: Food does not amaze or entice

The best of the best

by agame

I wanted to take my girlfriend to a nice restaurant for her birthday which I had in mind Chinese. However, she mentioned that she wanted to go to ?The Gardens of Taxco" now I have never heard of this place but, my girlfriend gave it a good review. Well she was on point, the minute we walked in I felt great, from the greeting that we received as well as the ambience. The food was so good there and the people really make you feel at home. I place this restaurant as one of my top choices to eat in Los Angeles. Not only was I sitting with the love of my life and the most beautiful girl there, I was enjoying some of the best Mexican food ever!

Pros: Great service

Cons: Can't think of any

naaaaaaaaah! Not worth the money!

by Aurelica

Ok, the good things:
The ambiance, the service (after you get seated), salsa.
Bad things:
Food was not tasty, it wasn't bad but it wasn't anything I would want to have again. It was kind of blah....We had a reservation at 9pm, but didn't get seated until after 10pm. Small and uncomfortable tables. We were 6 people and they sat us in a booth that fit max 4 people. Needless to say that we were very uncomfortable. I give it 3 stars only because it's a different experience due to its fixed menu and the way they take your orders. Also, the valet people were very very rude. I have to say though, that the service was excellent after we sat down. very attentive and polite.

Pros: After-seating service, salsa

Cons: food, seating, uncomfortable tables and chairs, price

Been going to Gardens of Taxco for the last 14 years. This place is amazing. Best Mexican Food in town. I feel at home when i'm there. It's family run and the employees are super friendly and funny. All of our family functions are held at Gardens. The chicken taxco is amazing and so is the tender, juicy carne asada. Don't forget to order a jug of their very unique margaritas.

The Secret Garden

by penngos

I first at ate the Gardens of Taxco back in 1985. The restaurant was about ten feet away, my girlfriend worked nights and I would go to get out of the apartment. I was confused the first time I went because there were no menus and the margaritas tasted funny, but it was close and, relatively, cheap. I had selected shrimp for my main course and was surprised that the food just seemed to keep coming. Soup. Appetizer. Appetizer. Dinner. A shot of sherry and small bit of tangy banana creme to finish off the meal. I was happily stuffed and all for under twenty bucks!

That was then, this is now. I live in San Francisco and don't get down to LA the way I'd like to, but when I do, believe me, I get to the Gardens of Taxco, even if it means driving an hour. It looks and feels the same, a warm, cozy. dark spot furnished like your grandparents house in the 70's, red vinyl booths, low light. The same singsong waiter is there to assure you that the mole is "not hot, it's spiiiiiiiiiiiicy". I think it's even the same mariachi band that was playing when I left.

The food is not imaginative - it's version of the same stuff you'll find everywhere else. But it's tasty and plentiful. You won't be hungry when you're done, I promise. The margaritas are still odd - they're not made with tequila, rather they have a wine base. But a pitcher is inexpensive.

I love this place, I really do. How weird that I have something in common with Ryan Seacrest.

Pros: Prix Fixe, lots of food

Cons: Valet parking.

Take A Trip Back To A Simpler, More Delecious Time In Mexico!!

by Leonardo1891

You step through the portal at The Gardens of Taxco.... and suddenly you are transported back to a time when Quality and Customer Service were paramount. You enter a place where Frank Romero has managed to stop time dead in its tracks and keep it to a period in which you are suddenly his guest at his house deep in Old Mexico. In the background you hear a gentle song accompanied by a soothing guitar...there is a buzz in the air and you can hear the waiters and staff shuffling about, all ready to pamper you as a guest at Frank's house.

You are taken to an overstuffed booth or chair that lets you totally relax while you wait in anticipation of the experiance that is about to unfold. Fresh chips and salsa, still hot from the fryer are on your table along with the bitter Picada salad. You order a liter of the incredible Margaritas that are Frank's trademark secret. Then Frank Romero himself will come to your table and begin to describe the dishes that are available for your dining adventure. Frank has crafted these dishes much like an artisan crafts a piece of stone into a work of art: all of the sauces are made to blend together with thier dishes in order to give your palete an experiance that it will never forget. The meal is typical of true Mexican fare: plenty of mouth watering apetizers such as quesadillas and Margarita pie, followed by his wonderful Albondiga soup and then to the nitty - gritty: the Main Course. My favorite is the Banderias (Skewers). The meat is so tender that it almost melts in your mouth; the combination of the vegetables makes it an expereance that will remain with you always! My wife loves the Pollo en Cilantro, truly a taste delight that leaves you breathless. The meal is rounded out by a delicious desert and a glass of sherry for that extra final touch!

This is a culinary experiance - come here for a romantic, fun evening - if you are looking for a place to toss down a couple of tacos, then you are in the wrong place!!

Pros: Incredible Food, Wonderful Staff

Cons: You Will Become Addicted!!!!!

I'LL TELL YOU THE TRUTH ABOUT TAXCO

by ladywriter24

If you're reading these reviews save some time and bypass the crappy ones about this restaurant. I've been going to Taxco since the day they opened and it's over 30 yrs. I used to live on Kings Road (and Melrose) right down the street and I've never...i repeat NEVER eaten at a better place. In the early days Frank (the owner) greeted you and I'm happy to say they didn't have a menu then either. The last time I was thereCarmen, Frank's daughter, was in charge. I now live in Las Vegas, and have since 1977 but every chance we get we go to Taxco. I used to have my birthday's there (even before they added the additional room) and we pretty much took over the place. FOOD IS EXCELLENT and you won't leave hungry. You WILL leave feeling great! As for the valet, all i can say is hell yeah. it's worth it as parking in that area is at a premium and since your dinner is not rushed and can take a couple of hours, it's worth it. This weekend we are all meeting there (from Vegas) during a baseball tournament my son is playing in. So it will us and a good portion of the team (San Jose Mets) and hopefully some people I work with from San Diego. Taxco is worth the trip at all times. We love it. And if it's your birthday or anniversary you get the best kept desert secret around. I'm not going to tell you what it is either. Find our for yourself. But be prepared. If it IS your birthday or whatever, don't feel weird when the entire restaurant sings you happy birthday. GREAT RESTAURANT, GREAT PLACE, OUTSTANDING FOOD. There is nothing bad about this place. For those that complained about the lousy margaritas (and you should really learn to spell dude) keep in mind the margaritas are made with wine and are fantastic. I can't wait for this coming Saturday. It's been too long since I've been there.
But for all you that posted negative comments...GOOD...STAY AWAY...leaves more room and time for those that appreciate Gardens of Taxco.***

Pros: There are too many to list.

Cons: sometimes there is a wait but they'll serve you margaritas (or whatever) on the patio while you wait.

Pl dont go, i had to register at citysearch to post a Warning!!

by vkant

the waiter comes to your table and gives you specific choices, I dont eat meat, thought it could cost me less but, it costed me $23 and my girlfriend another 23 or so. A $4.50 for a lousey drink. Pl dont throw away your money, there are other choices out there, I learnt a lesson never go to a resturant which has no menu, its a way to cheat customers. Its sad that I was mislead here, I thought, if few of them post negative about a resturant, I always give them a second chance, but learnt my lesson.

Pros: there is nothing good to say

Cons: very expensive, dirty plates, lousey food.

Ryan Seacrest was wrong... ) :

by jacknowsbest5

So, I heard Ryan (whom I love), talk about this place and I had to try it. I was waiting to be impressed by the singing waiter...what a let down...I think I sing better then him in the shower...And the menu..what a stupid concept! For a picky eater like myself, I didn't like being asked if I wanted Chicken, meat or fish and that was the only choice I had...so out comes the quesadilla I guess as the appetizer. The drinks, the main entree and whatever dessert was served to us was gross and unmemorable. What a dumb restaurant. seriously if you like to feel like your at someone?s house and obligated to eat what they serve..This is the place for you!! As for me I'll stick to my other Mexican favorites...Don't go!!

Amazing food and fun atmosphere

by jericsmall

The Gardens of Taxco is a hidden gem right off Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood. The menu is fixed so you just walk in, get seated, and let them serve it up. Each course is delicious and the manager (or maybe owner) walks around to each and every table to make sure everything is perfect. Musicians will wander by too, though they expect tips, which can be a bit of an interruption to an otherwise amazing night. Good for a date, or good for a group. But in the end, it's about the food and this place delivers on the flavor.

Best sit-down Mexican restaurant in town!

by steelewater

I've been going to Gardens of Taxco for the past five years. It's a great place for a date, or to bring friends and family for a nice sit down meal. My favorite dish is their CARNE ASADA, it is incredibly tender and tasty. The staff is very friendly, but make sure you come hungry because the five course meal is a lot to handle. Great food!

Pros: Great service, great food

Cons: Menu is always the same

Wonderful!

by jessmcd

This is where I go when the bottomless, insatiable hunger imprisoned in my belly breaks loose and takes me hostage. The food is fairly standard mexican fare but they bring more than you will likely eat (four courses plus dessert), and for less money than a salad costs at many West Hollywood eateries. Its the ambience and unique dining experience that make Taxco noteworthy; live mariachis, prix fix menu narrated to you orally by your waiter and a relaxed comfy vibe you'd be hard pressed to find in many other WeHo restaurants. Extra kudos for the top notch spicy pickled veggies and liver picklin Sangria.

Best Mexican food you'll ever find in a restaurant!

by ohclementine

Don't listen to those bad reviewers! I think they're competitors trying to lower Garden's rating. I am a regular patron and this is the absolute best Mexican food you will ever eat! Seriously! I have never taken anyone here who didn't like it. And let me tell you, I have some very picky friends with some very discerning palates! Try the 'chicken con crema', you won't be sorry! Even their rice is good. It's not the tomato sauce kind-not even close! it's the kind with the spices ground up in the mortar and pestle with the *real* tomatoes. There's so much more. For your meal you will get 7 courses:
chips and salsa (it's good salsa, not pace picante)
meatball soup (light)
a quesadilla, make with delicous quality cheese (oaxaca, maybe?) and fresh guac.
a mini beef chimichanga with guac or a chicken con crema enchilada (this depends on your choic of entree)
your entree
a creamy banana-cherry desert (to die for!)
a sherry cordial

if that's not enough their margaritas are made with wine, not te-kill-ya.

one word: Go!

Pros: everything!

Cons: nothing!

A Sad Little Garden

by gerryjim

The place is a small space with cramped booths for four. No menus. You have to listen to an impatience man who recites the few and limited menu choices. I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas. They came drowned in some gooey cheese. The salad which accompanied the entree was chopped up into small pieces, and came with a dressing that tasted like a French dressing. The cost for each person is fixed at $21.95. You cannot just order a salad or a taco a la carte.

Cons: Parking

Good, but different

by westhollywoodgirl22

I went expecting typical Hollywood Mexican. I wasn't too hungry, so being treated to a surprise 5 course meal was not what I had in mind, but it was delicious.
The margaritas are not typical, but nothing really is at Gardens of Taxco.
No menu. Everything they have is told to you, in the style that a waiter would tell you the specials.
Steak, chicken, fish, vegetables. You decide, then get ready to get full!
On the more expensive side, but worth it for the quality and amount of food you are served. Margaritas are on the less expensive side and are inexplicably fruity (guava?) but strong!
I would recommend this place is you 1) Are HUNGRY 2) Have some extra cash 3) Have a driver, 'cause if you have more than one margarita, you're gonna be wasted 4) Are entertaining out of town guests--it's something different, in a good way. 5) Have a special occasion.

Pros: Friendly staff, homey atmosphere, open late-ish

Cons: Must get big 5-course dinner

Great Food and Service.

by wheelingben

I found Gardens of Taxco quite by accident in the early 80's. I found the food to be tipical of the finest homes in Mexico City. I have been all over Mexico and have eaten in homes of all over the country, both rich and poor. I have always been served good food in those homes. When I found Gardens of Taxco, I felt like I was back in one of the homes of one of the delightful mexican families. The food is superior and authentic. I have taken numerious friends there and am going back tonight. They even have a musician that goes from table to table singing with his gutar. Great Food, Great Service, and Great Ambiance. A little pricey but well worth it. Lacks Wheelchair accessible restroom which I need, but for the food and service I will go there anyway. Go and find a great place.

Just fun. Awesome delicious fun.

by tarasim

My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate a special day for him. It was the best choice i could make, basically.
He loved it. We're both vegetarians (but love seafood) and the food options were still endless..
They never stopped bringing on more food and their quesadillas were the best we've ever had. Seriously, the cheese in there is amazing.
I usually hate on margaritas but theirs are pine-apple-ish and are really great.
We left really full, carrying doggy bags, loved everything we got, and saying that we absolutely have to come back here.
(my only problem is the price, which is justified by the amount of food we got, but still hard to afford on the weekly if you're young like us...)
seriously people, get your date, 80 dollars(including the tip) and go there. you won't regret it.

Pros: everything i've eaten there is amazing. very comfy too.

Cons: somewhat pricey. too much food to stomach.

bad margaritas

by pepperbelly

This place is cute & charming, but the first thing I noticed was how bad the margaritas were. Food was ok, went there before My friend & i went dancing last week, it was crowded! Nice Location. hard to get service started, but once it did it didn't stop so that was just ok. I live in Sylmar so i thought food in Hollywood would be a little better, but it was the same. It's a good place to check out. But don't bother with the margies.... trust me. they are foamy....odd. Maybe you will like it more than I did....

One of the Best Mexican.

Gardens of Taxco is one of my favorite places in Los Angeles. I'm a native here to L.A. and I have seen places come and go, the trendy and not so trendy. The Gardens are consistant without being snobby unlike other places in L.A. that are just known for there hype and who's who of Hollywood. This local hot spot is a must for the real Angeleno's

Pros: Valet Parking, Service, Personality.

Cons: If you don't wan't Valet, street parking is difficult

The Happiest Restaurant in LA

by headcrusher

Taxco is the Disneyland of Mexican Restaurants! Yes sometimes there is a long line to get in but it is an experience you will not forget. Forget reading the menu, have it sung to you - "the chicken tastes like it was borrrrn in the sauce". Once you make your selection and order your pitcher of sweet and fruity Vermouth Margaritas the plates begin to arrive and they don't seem to stop. The waiters make sure your glass never goes dry and the food just keeps on coming. Not the place to go if you want a quiet, romantic dinner but the place to go when you're hungry, not in a hurry and are getting ready for a night on the town or entertaining a group. If you want a memory and not just a meal - you're sure to get one here. If you're a snooty gourmet with your nose held high as you enter the room, then stay in Beverly Hills but if like Sheryl Crow, you just want to have some fun - then this place may have been the inspiration for her chat topping song!

Pros: Fun, good food and drink, a memorable experience

Cons: gets crowded

Very nice service, friendly, family atmosphere, but bland, bland, bland food

by mhb1954

My title says it all. The waiters and service were superb. A really nice feeling to eat in their dining room. They serve several courses in a semi-prix fix menu. The chicken mole was supposed to be very, very spicy and flavorful. It wasn't "bad," per se, but I've had more flavorful food. In fact, the whole meal was really lacking something. It just wasn't the satisfying type of meal I had envisioned. Clearly, I'm outnumbered, because there must have been 15 people waiting to get in when we left after an early Saturday evening meal. But the food? Well, it was definitely homemade and fresh, but it didn't satisfy me. But the service... the service was really good.

Pros: Service, fresh corn tortillas and fresh, hot chips

Cons: But the chips' salsa? Bland! Like the food....

Food is good. Margaritas are horrible.
I had poor service when I went ( it was a sunday or monday early evening)
I will give it another chance. wasn't impressed. I will stick to Joselitos or Don cucos.

Pros: interesting

Cons: valet only parking.

One of my favorites

Be prepared to eat when you come here. You get a feeling of home when you are finally seated to have dinner. The plates keep coming and they each get better and better. I really like that everyone can share and everything is included in one price. Get the margarita, it's great!

Pros: Value, Portions, Fun, Great service

Cons: Long waits

Good for a group or an occasion

by rudette

Good, inexpensive place to have a festive meal. The quality of the food is just average, but you get a lot for your money and the atmosphere is fun and casual.

Good food, but customer service has gone down hill

by kdboles

I started eating at Gardens of Taxco when I moved to West Hollywood in 1990. For the next ten years, until I moved, I considered it one of the best Mexican food in LA. I moved from West Hollywood in 2000, and earlier this month (June 2006) I was visting West Hollywood and decided to try my old favorite place again.

While the food is still good, it wasn't as great as I remember it. Plus, the customer service left a lot to be desired. There were a few people who I remember, but many new people who were not as cordial and helpful. Actually, our waiter seemed to be rather bothered by our few questions.

Food is good, but it isn't the same great place it once was.

Pros: food

Cons: customer service

whoa! it's prix fixe

by iolokus

yeah, the food here is pretty freaking good, but (and maybe it was our fault for just strolling in) we had no idea it was a multi-course, prepriced meal. not for anybody who needs to know exactly what they'll be getting or how much it's going to cost.

Pros: good food, tasty banana dessert thing

Cons: they keep bringing more food!

What a treat

by robknox101

Great food and an incredible value. A multi-course meal for two, with drinks, for 50 bucks. Are you kidding me? And the food is excellent. I'm particularly fond of the mole. Become a regular and recit the menu along with one of the attentive waiters. Yes the margaritas are not made with tequila, but this restaurant is a true hidden treasure in LA and will be deeply enjoyed by diners who want fine food and genuine experience, not just what's newer then new and riddled with celebrities.

Pros: cuisine, service, atmosphere

Cons: no reservations

Maybe the best Mexican food in Los Angeles

by duecetrae

A friend told me about Gardens and I had to go that very night. And she was 110% right, it was the best Mexican food I can remember. The staff provides great service, the food is excellent, and the margaritas are to die for. Go hungry, becasue you will get a lot of food for your money. The food is traditional to Mexico City and has great flavor, but is not too hot for those with sensitive stomachs. Place is usually busy but worth the wait. Restaurant is small, but cozy.Great ambience for a dinner date.

Pros: lots of good food, service is good, drinks are great

Cons: sometimes a wait, parking, not too big
