Thank you so much for providing such a place wherein I can enjoy my music experience. Your people are amazing, particularly with the way they communicate.

I am giving this music store five out of five stars for the level of service they were able to provide. It is definitely worth the time and money invested.

Great place as you can tell from other reviews. You can find or order anything music or movie related here. Used sections are my favorite. Not a vinyl man, but they have that too.

Basically the best record store on the planet no matter what media you are looking for. If it isn't on amazon, it might be here. Their vinyl collection is staggering.

My go-to spot for Vinyl, Movies, and most recently: Band T-shirts. Nothing beats Amoeba.

My suggestion would be to just go in and experience Amoeba for yourself, I highly doubt that with the extraordinary selection they have for just about every type of movie, music, or randomness you can think of, that you will leave without something in your hands.

My favorite spots are the gigantic (as everything is in this store) 7 inch section (located in the back of the info counter) and the AS-IS DVD section (cheap movies that are guaranteed to play, with minor minor defects), where I always always find something...

Prices are usually always good for USED merchandise, for which they have a copious amount of... newer stuff is pricey, but it's to be expected, and the amount of amazingly priced used stuff I have gotten from Amoeba makes up for any high priced recent titles I may have splurged on.

Also, since I am a struggling college student, I lack funds, and Amoeba usually always gives me a good store credit deal when trading in my unwanted vinyl and movies.. I have left disappointed in what they have given me in trade a few times... but I won't count it against them!

GO TO AMOEBA!

p.s. FREE parking right next to the store for up to 2 hours... unbeatable for a place in Hollywood.

i love this place. everyone who works there are avid music buffs and never ever steer you in the wrong direction. They take the time to ask you a few questions about your personal likes and the staff genuinely care about you satisfaction of finding a great new album or artist. I go there all the time to compliment their last recommendations to me. They really know how to treat customers and make loyal circles.
PS - check out the world music section and ask for their help. my greatest finds have been from that section mostly.

Amoeba is just a classic experience. This location is enormous - and I like still flipping through mostly inexpensive music and vinyls that I've never heard of. Amoeba just continues to rock!

Amoeba is a landmark in LA, and in fact, just won best of LA by Los Angeles Magazine - beating out Pink's hot dogs and other long revered fixtures in the community. You can find ANYTHING you're searching for here - their used collection is second to none. They also often have free performances by musical artists - check out the website for upcoming events.

By far this is the hugest record store I've ever been to. For those DJs who are looking for vinyls, come here. They have a million of them and cds as well. For trance djs, they have records from Tiesto to Marco V. They are kind of expensive though since there are a limited production.

This Place is truly one of my favorites. I love going to Amoeba on a Sunday Afternoon and get lost in their vast one of a kind music selection, If your looking for a specific Cd and cant find it anywhere, look no further, They have one of the biggest collections fo cd' dvd's and my favorite Lp's. All genres, new and used. I'm like a kid in a candy store each time I visit.

This place just rocks when it comes to music selection. It carries loads of new, used and rare titles, from all genres of music. They also carry loads of DVDs and videos too. You can also catch bands and DJs there, as well as, see a celebrity just shopping about, but this place is all about the music.

I can find scandanavian import black metal, and lost vinyl free jazz, in a matter of minutes, just a few feet away from each other. Upstairs, the movies are a little more chaotic, but, who cares with such a selection, and laser discs to boot, I mean, this place has everything. And then some

THEE best and biggest record store I've EVER been in. Helpful and cheerful staff, who KNOW THEIR STUFF might I add. This store has anything, ANYTHING, I say!!!! You name it and more than likely, they've got it: Music from Senegal: Fatou Guewel, Orchestra Baobab, Fatou Laobe, Youssou N'Dour, Vivian N'Dour, underground hip hop: Mos Def/K-os/Common/Dilla, mainstream hip hop: JayZ/Kanye/Busta. World music of any kind: Enya, Feist, Portishead, Buena Vista Social Club. The biggest reggae selection I've seen, it's almost intimidating. Comedy albums (bought my deluxe Richard Pryor comedy album set there for a brilliant price). I mean I could go on and on and on. I love it and I feel so fortunate to be living in one of only 3 cities where this store calls home (SanFran & Berkeley). Awesome used cd's as well for excellent prices (bought my Van Hunt cd there for a cool $6.99!!! NOW BEAT THAT!) I stay buying their used cd's and I buy w/out testing it out to see if they'll skip because THEY NEVER DO. They guarantee their merchandise. I SIMPLY LOVE IT! I will forever be a loyal customer!

Pros: dirt cheap, a wonderland for music and movie lovers

.

For first-timers who think they've seen it all as far as CD stores go, your jaw will drop when you first enter Amoeba. I've been going there for years and I still get a chill when I look down upon the expansive CD floor from the second floor DVD section.\r
\r
Their awesome, although sometimes pricey used section is the best in L.A. for harder to find titles. Sure, there's Second Spin for more accessible titles, but where else can you pick up the entire collection of Professionals (Steve Jones' and Paul Cook's post-Sex Pistols band) re-issues...in used condition no less?\r
\r
Sure, there seems to be a tattoo and piercing requirement for all staffers, but when you finally tackle them, they can be pretty friendly. Saturdays are a complete madhouse, too.\r
\r
Despite those minor drawbacks, Amoeba is a place I continue to visit on a weekly basis.

Pros: incredible selection, seriously, wow.

I like Amoeba becuase they have a great selection of music (something for everyone) at a great price. It is also a funky and fun place that makes you feel like part of the LA in crowd. If you like music and haven't been here yet, you need to pay it a visit. (P.S. Sometimes bands come in and play in the store. Who knew shopping could become such a party?)

There is no other place in LA with this sort of variety in music, dvds, everything! I love classical music and this is the only place I can find the specific kinds that I enjoy. Even retail music stores dont provide that. I think its because people from around the world that live in LA sell their collections to this place and it makes it so diverse. I'm glad you're here!!!

Brought in 300+ Lps in VG condition alot of Blues, Jazz, Soul, 60's, 70's Rock. After trading my licence 4 a dolly, and lugging up 6 boxes full w/o any help. 2Some jackars thumbed through them picked out about a hundred of the ones that were worth the most to them. I watched as he took out each selected lp checked both sides and replaced. No problem. He then started into his scripted routine about how they really didn't want the lps and how they weren't even worth buying? While he was examining the lps he told me this was gonna take a while hitting he didn't want me watchin him, I should've stayed. I wonder know how many of my records accidentally found their way onto another shelf. So while I was browsing through the lps for sale in the back I saw at least 2 dozen of the same lps he picked out which were priced more than 8.99 each! Mostly the rarer blues, Elvis and 1940's albums. After he offered me what amounted to about 15 cents for each record he had choosen, I laughed in his face told him to put them all back in the boxes. He then tried to pretend he was ignorant of the prices those exact same lps were selling for in his store! This after telling me he had worked there since before thay had opened! You should've seen the look on his face when I told him to put them back in their boxes, like a deer caught in headlights! HAHAHA He was so sure I was gonna just be like OK, whats the best you can do? The website states that if they are going to sell an LP for $5.00 they will pay you half that in cash? My math isn't that great, but 15 sents for an album they are selling for 9 dollars is not half! Fuqing Scam Artists, Avoid! They are nothin but crooks makin all their monry on the assumed ignorance of their clientel. I spiit on em! Hock! Pttt! Since then i had my little cousin list them as lots on ebay. I have made over $325 and counting! Simply by paying an honest person to do the legwork. Lesson Learned.

Pros: None

Cons: Yes they are!

I can literally stay in here for hours, browsing through cd's, old records, and dvd's. There's so much variety in there that the place can appeal to the indie junkie to the hip hop listener... Also the store workers are extremely knowledgable about music- they really know their stuff! They also have some in-store performances that are pretty awesome... I remember seeing Jenny Lewis there a few years back~

With the advent of online purchasing of music, I really don't see much point in buying CDs here anymore. My DJ friend comes here alot to parouse their selection of vintage vinyl, and sometimes I'll spot something in their DVD section that I'd just buy online later, but I think Amoeba has seen better days. I've never been able to park underground and have had to use a metered street parking spot a couple blocks away on a side street.

Pros: good used CDs

Cons: expensive DVDs

.

I've bought something from just about every section of Amoeba, and there is no doubt the selection is overall excellent, with some big caveats. They know what things are worth and there are no ""deals"" to be had here. When you factor in tax, buying specific albums or DVDs is much cheaper on Amazon or any number of sites. So Amoeba works best from the grab-bag approach.\r
\r
And you will surely find a lot of good stuff -- for top dollar. Johnny Cash on vinyl? $18. A used Fox Noir Collection DVD (such as No Way Out, Kiss of Death), $10. They are $7.50 on Amazon NEW with free shipping. You get the idea...It's fun to browse around.\r
\r
I just have to mention that there is a WIDE variety of employees at Amoeba, some are nice guys, some are jerks. This can make a huge difference when you are selling. The checkers often act like they're doing you a favor by ringing you up. But then again some are very cool, it just depends.

If you are a music fan...especially if you are an eclectic music fan...you could definitely go broke here at Amoeba. One of the largest selections (outside of the San Francisco or New York) of ""anything"" that I've seen. You can find current Pop on CD to obscure Martin Denny mood music on vinyl. If you spend hours browsing here, you could walk out with an armful of ""this looks interesting"".\r
\r
Recently, my cousins were visiting LA from Hawaii...and it took me hours to get them out of this store. Typically, they had handfuls, if not armfuls, of music they had to pare down to a reasonable load they could pack in their suitcases for the trip home. I suspect the next time they come to visit, we'll be heading back here. That's okay, though. I always find something to take home. \r
\r
I definitely recommend Amoeba on a day you have time to browse. Oh, and if you still have a ""record player""...don't walk...RUN to the vinyl section. It's a gold mine.

Amoeba carries practically every CD, vinyl, or DVD you could ever imagine owning, from obscure to mainstream. As an added bonus, about half the store is taken up by pre-owned items, which offers an equally vast selection of music and film.

The Amoeba Music on Sunset may be newer, but it is far larger than the Amoebas in both Berkeley and San Francisco. Amoeba has the best selection of used CDs and Vinyl records than any other store I've ever seen in the world.

Amoeba buys, sells, and trades-- but the best part is that they don't accept used products that have scratches and such. Everything you purchase at Amoeba is quality.

They have virtually every obscure artist recorded in the 20th century, in addition to DVDs that are difficult to find elsewhere (foreign, documentary, cult classic, etc.)

If you have any question, the staff can always help you out. Amoeba is worth checking out during any LA trip. Celebrities and desperate scenesters alike fill the store because there is nowhere else with this kind of selection.

If you find yourself constantly on a budget (and how many of us in LA can't say that?), then Amoeba is the answer to your entertainment purchase fix. Not only is the selection seemingly endless, but if you don't mind the word ""used"", then you'll save a bundle here. On one afternoon, I bought 2 box sets of used DVDs and 3 used CDs and spent only about a hundred dollars. Retail value: almost 300. And with things like DVD and CDs, you won't notice a difference in quality. Snobs and elitists may find the grunge atmosphere, the hippie remnants, and the staff with that marches to its own tune a little hard to take. For the rest of us, that, and the flea market browsing system, is just all part of the fun.

Pros: selection, price, staff as eclectic as, selection

Cons: street parking

.

A 2 level, warehouse-sized dreamland for music and movie junkies. Street parking is okay, but they have both an underground garage and a small parking lot. The lower level is dedicated to music both new and used, with CD's, and vinyl dominating over cassettes. A small stage at the rear of the front room host local and national acts on a regular basis. The upper level is dedicated to movies, with new and used DVD's, videotapes and soundtracks. The staff are very knowledgeable (colectively) with each person having their own specialties. The prices are very reasonable, the selections are both thorough and eclectic, and the potential for hearing and seeing things you've never encountered before is present in overabundance.

This store is awsome! I visited the one in San Fran and when I discovered they had one here I was very pleased. For any classical buffs, they have a HUGE selection on opera and classical music. I am always able to find good cd's at an excellent price!

Pros: inexpensive, excellent selection

Cons: bad parking situation

.

Ah, Amoeba, their used CD prices are great, but new ones can be overpriced. $17 for a Sigur Ros CD that I saw elsewhere for $10? But their vinyl selection must been seen to be believed. Sure a few things are overpriced, and some new releases should seriously be restocked, like Coldplay, but for the most part, the prices are great, often with new records being several dollars less than the CD. I've found so much here, and I always have to put half of what I want back. Browsing the vinyl section is a truly great experience. This is the best selection I've ever found, and the same goes for the CD's. Unfortunately, the parking is horrible. It can take 30 minutes to get a spot in the garage. Now you can park at the Arclight, but expect to be harassed by many bums on the way to Amoeba.

As SF transplants, the one thing we missed the most was Amoeba. Somehow, these guys manage to accumulate the most amazing selection of new and used music and video - almost anything we've looked for was available there in some form. The only beef we have with them is the prices - sometimes they charge exobitant prices for used material. However, the convenience definitely outweighs the price in the long term, and we feel lucky to be able to shop in such a knowledgeable, friendly, and well-stocked store. Thanks for opening an LA store!!!

I lose track of time when I go in this store. The selection is that amazing/overwhelming! The staff is also very knowledgeable on even the most obscure artists.

Contrary to that other review, every Amoeba experience I've ever had can be compared to that of a kid's in a candy store. Maybe it was that I was too busy find lost treasures and hidden gems to notice who was in the store. Frankly I could care less. It's all about the music. If you truely love music and the over-priced chain stores aren't really your style. go to Amoeba...It's like Crack.

Although Amoeba offers a worthy selection, I couldn't help but feel that I needed a shower after leaving the store. Dirty, unorganized, and filled with people, who were truly in need of a personal hygiene lesson the Amoeba experience was not my idea of fun. If you're into Thrift-store rummaging , you'll likely enjoy the experience. If on the other-hand you enjoy organized, hassle-free shopping in a clean environment, I suggest you go elsewhere.

Ameoba's great for shoppers who are used to corporate monsters like Tower and Virgin. For shoppers who prefer the inependent record shop, Amoeba will prove overwhelming. Selection is great, but there are more user-friendly stores in town, with just as good a product. With their size and continuous expansion, Amoeba can't stay independent for long.

1 Word - WOW. If you're a music enthusiast like me, you definitely have to go. I have never been able to NOT find a CD that I was looking for. Be prepared to spend hours in this mega store and spend hundreds because they have everything.

Great selection of music and they are always having in-store appearances by good artists. They only drawback is parking is really bad.

Collecting music for awhile with over a 100,000 LPs of my own, I have to say that overall, Amoeba is the best in town. If not just for its amazing selection of indie records alongside mainstream releases. I really don't care much for ""the atmosphere"" everyone raves about; I'm too busy digging through vinyl and admiring their collectible 45""s. If you're looking for a particular rarity, their staff is the most knowledgable in town (much more so than their SF/Berkley locations). That said, I rarely shop there unless I'm really looking for something that I must have and I know other stores won't carry. Real deals are found in other local record stores that are shockingly never even mentioned in ""Best of LA"" lists, mostly because regulars don't want to give up their best kept secrets. But buyers who boast 6 figure collections know exactly which stores I'm talking about...

For a thirty-five year old slack like myself, I wouldn't shop anywhere else for me music. Amoeba has it all. Groovey people, groovey music, and deliciously-groovey long lines so as to take a slow deep breath, relish in the not to overally priced ditty in your hand, and take in the atmosphere around ya. Who knows, maybe one of the other 30's slackers will come up and say 'Hello'.

This is really one of the best music stores in the country. I was a fan of the Haight St. location in San Francisco, but this one is even better because they have the most amazing selection I have seen in any store.

Ameoba has become a safe haven for those with a quest for good current cd's,dvd's and laser discs, but with out the trust fund or time to traipse all over obscurity to find them....ameoba is easy to use has foreign dvd's that are to die for and prices that won't kill you....besides if the movie sucks at the arclight just tell your date you'll meet them out front and head over to ameoba it is time and money better spent....

Amoeba is the best! Whether you're looking for popular titles or rare selections, Amoeba will most likely have what you want. The store is huge and the cds are arranged by style which range from rock to electronica to bluegrass. Many titles are available used, which helps if you're trying to save some $$. The DVD selection is impressive as well. Be prepared to spend some time browsing!

Parking is what does it for me here. The have plenty of street parking, parking underground and parking across the at the Cinerama Dome complex.

I like to go straight to the back of the store to chill out in the quieter jazz/classical section.

Amoeba music is out of this world! The selection is never ending! I went in there and I was tempted to come out with the entire store in my bag. But I settled on 4 cd's which only came out to 37 dollars (used) 2 of my cd's are top notch and they only cost 6 bucks a piece. We're not talking about the Best of Yani vol. 3! What were talking about is Bush sixteen stone and the first Saind cd! They got a clearance rack, an upstairs level and many rareties!
If you like music...And who doesn't? Go to amoeba! You wont regret it!
