I got a free tour to Shanghai Expo and other vicinities ($299 value) because I purchased airfares from L.A to Shanghai stopped by Taipei, then back to L.A. The tour in China was a promotion from Chinese government to show overseas Chinese how well the country has developed, so we saw the best developed cities in China. The accommodations were great, all the hotels we stayed were 4 or 5 stars rating. But the meals were not as well as described by the travel agency. The portions were small, and 80% of my table tour mates were having diarrhea after eating at Nanjin restaurant. The guides were good at convincing guests in shopping, which they made their commissions on. Ignore the guides say that no one will bother you in the shop because it is run by the government. When you step in, one-on-one strategy spreads out in the group. It's hard to say no because the sales lady keeps following you. Be firm, if you don't want to buy anything. Lastly, tips are mandatory for 8 days regardless that we were on our own the first two days (arriving & self help to Expo), and the last day of departure right after breakfast! The total experience was that weather was extremely hot and humid in summer, nice to see how fast China has developed, seeing huge crowd beyond description, experiencing cutting line culture, a bit of feeling deceived after shopping in the assigned fatories, and not so tasty food. What can you ask more for the free tour? But I will need 2 -3 years to sink in the China experience before taking another trip to China again. And hopefully by then, people can follow rules better and we can go shopping without pressure.
