Julio Romano is hands down the best stylist in Los Angeles and the one I have trusted to cut off all my hair, make choices for me when in the fashion business I needed to look my best and also at the top of my style game, and in the entertainment business he's had my hair look so good people think I should be in hair commercials. He is talented, knowledgeable, funny, easy to talk to, interested in his clients, in what is at the leading edge of good style, creative in his cutting technique, has a style that is all his own. Julio is a person I trust not only to cut my hair but to really make sure that how I look is appropriate to what I have happening, usually working in a fashion or image related context. He teaches, represents excellent products, does his own research, styles and does beautiful fashion work, and also has an entertainment reel. He's an LA native. It really goes without saying that you can't find another one of him in a billion. I highly recommend Julio Romano. He will inspire your vibe and your style and you'll walk away from his chair feeling like the you you want to be, I have been coming back for over a decade now to Julio. Get in his chair- he is a treasure.

Based on the reviews on Citysearch, I decided to give Refuge a try. I'm so glad I did!

Since it was my first time, I decided to go with whoever they set me up with over the phone, which was Jessica. The entire experience was very positive.

Jessica was fantastic. (You go, girl!) The woman is an artist. I've had several bad haircuts elsewhere that left me with REALLY bad layers. I was sure Jessica would have to chop off several inches in order to make things better, which is what all those other stylists did, but I was wrong. She ever so skillfully reshaped my hair and only cut about an inch off in length.

I couldn't believe what a great job she did. I've never had a haircut like this before. She cut my hair dry and her method was very unique. She could see the way it had been cut before and explained what she was doing to fix it. She really took her time, as did the other stylist who was cutting another client's hair. I got the impression that all the stylists at Refuge have the same work ethic, which is difficult to find in this day and age.

Jessica's haircut changed my life. I know it sounds dramatic, but it's true. When you keep getting bad haircuts and your hair always looks wrong, it really puts a damper on your self-esteem. After this wonderful haircut, I feel prettier and happier when I look in the mirror, and that's life-changing in my book.

I've been getting compliments left and right, even from people I don't really know. Someone in school, who sits a few rows behind me, came up to tell me how great my hair looks. I was really surprised, but I suppose I shouldn't be since she's been staring at the back of my head for the last nine weeks! My boyfriend LOVES my hair and thinks I look younger and skinnier with my new haircut. HE'S even recommending Refuge to some of his female friends and they've been calling me for more info!

Go to Refuge. You won't regret it.

For almost a year I have been dreading finding a new salon, as my old one is now too far away, too expensive, and on my last visit my stylist brought her kid in for the day, a total distraction. I?ve been in LA for 8 yrs and had yet to find a stylist I really liked. My fine long hair and low-maintenance style is a challenge for many. I picked Refuge based on price, proximity + good reviews. I was not let down.
I was promptly seated with Miriam, who listened well and didn't try to push me into something too extreme or short. She cut it dry (as she does with all clients) because she "can do a more precise cut that is well blended". So decisive, fast, efficient and yes, accurate. She is very reasonably priced at $35. A smart decision, as now I can afford to go more regularly, a win-win. She had appts. afterwards so introduced me to Karen for coloring.
Karen is warm, friendly and has a great rapport with her clients. She is also very skilled. She was able to blend the virgin hair with the two different shades of previously colored, while making it look fresh and sun-kissed, but what I am most impressed with was her foiling. It was tight and to the scalp, no bleeding, no lines visible at all. I?d go back to her in a heartbeat.
Refuge is doing everything right. Friendly staff? Check. Knowledgeable/skilled staff? Check. Reasonable prices? Check. Unpretentious laid-back atmosphere? Check.
The parking meter outside did eat my coins, but that's not their fault. No spa or manicure station, but I never care about that stuff anyway, myself. My only suggestion would be to add a little more color in the decor. Walls are white and other than the interesting stations made of salvaged doors (ala Monsters, Inc.), there is not much color/art to speak of. But that's just cosmetic, and what we all really want is a salon that has good solid stylists who know what they're doing and give a damn good haircut. And that, Refuge is.

I just had my first cut at Refuge...with Miriam and it was fantastic. She cuts hair dry, and really understands my unruly, curly hair and how to make it look good. She took out a lot of weight, without taking off too much length...I totally felt like I looked great when I left and I don't need to hide for a week while my hair grows out. I've been scalped so many times, I'm phobic when it comes to hair cuts, but the salon is totally cool and comfy, and the staff is first rate!!

I have now had my hair done twice by Alisa at Refuge, and it was fantastic!
Great, intimate atmosphere, amazing products - (organic & vegan) & no waiting around. Everyone was right on schedule.
My first visit, Alisa did a roller set on my hair for a 2 events I had over the weekend - and it lasted and only looked better as the days went on. - great advice from Alisa as to how to make it last.
Went back to have have my hair blown straight the following week for some other events - and same thing. My hair
only got better as a few days passed. Felt like I got a lot more for a very fair price! (other places would have been so so much more moeny!)
cant wait for them to get the organic color line going!
highly recommeded! this place is a gem - as is Alisa!!!

It's hard to find a salon on the eastside where you can get an awesome professional cut for so little. I had Alisa, and I've never felt more relaxed with a stylist. She knew just what to do with my mop and she was funny as hell to boot. Don't know how I missed this place before. But I'm headed there from now on. Cool atmosphere, and no annoying wait or poseur attitude like at Rude-ys. Take refuge.

I have to say, I'm pretty picky about the way I like my hair cut. I followed a recommendation to Refuge and was overjoyed when they nailed my style perfectly. It's got to be the best hair cut I've gotten in my 5 years of living in LA! It's located in a nice area and the salon is small and comforting. The layout is fun and hip and so are the people. Alisa, me and my hair thank you! We will be back again and again.

This salon is awesome!!! The best person there is Alisa. She used to cut at Rudys (as did most cutters here i think). Ask for Alisa if you go!!!

I asked for a basic trim and got a hack job. My layers were left too short and uneven. I went on a recommendation but will never return. Not an easy area to park and not a relaxing setting at all.

I'm pretty no-nonsense about my haircut. I want it to be quick and stylish without being too over the top. I got tired of going to Rudy's due to the inconsistency and the unpredictable wait times. I followed Miriam to Refuge and am totally satisfied. Refuge offers great prices in a clean, comfortable, and hip atmosphere.

Michael Leon has been my stylist for 7 years now, since meeting him back in 2000 I have not allowed another person to touch my hair. Not only is Michael a true professional, he is also friendly and conversational. He always asks what I want to do with my hair, but I trust him so much that I always say "Have fun!"...I am never disappointed with what he does. People are always asking me where I get my hair done and I receive many compliments. REFUGE has a very cool vibe and style to it, I feel tres chic when I'm there. The rates are very affordable considering the outstanding work all of the stylists do. Please do yourself a favor and stop going to bougie salons, support this local spot, you won't regret it!

I have been getting my hair cut by Steffani for almost 2 years. I've followed her to the new shop, Refuge, and am very happy she's moved there. Every time I call for an appt I get friendly and helpful service by whoever answers the phone. I rarely have difficulty getting a prompt appt time. The salon is small enough to be inviting but is not cramped and it has a clean and warm atmosphere. I can't say enough good things about Steffani. I get my hair cut every three weeks and I've yet to have a bad cut. I brought my mother in for a cut when she was in town visiting and Steffani did wonders, even though my mother was very vague about what she wanted. She was extremely pleased with the results. I also just made use of Steffani's other services and had a lovely eyebrow wax. It's one-stop shopping. And the prices can't be beat for a Los Angeles salon!

I fell upon this salon while driving by one day in desperate need to get my hair colored. The outside caught my eye so I parked my car walked in and met Micheal Leon. I had been dying my hair for years and had ended up with a dark brown/black patchwork hair color. I've been going to Michael for several months now and both his hair cuts and coloring are excellent. He has patiently worked with me to fix my color and I am very pleased, he has also patiently put up with my charming yet vivacious daughter Rory hanging out during several of my appointments. The salon is friendly and inviting and it gives you a very personal mom and pop feel with a modern twist. This is the first time in a long time I've found a comfortable place to go to in LA to get my hair done. highly recommend Refuge.

I have the type of hair that if a have a great cut...you can tell. Or if I have a bad cut...you can really tell. I have been so unsatisfied in the past that I'm usually really scared to go someplace new. But Michael got exactly what I was saying I wanted and even took it a step further. I wanted a regular brown and he gave me fabulous highlights that has made almost every person compliment the way I look. And it wasn't to upsale...it ended up being cheaper than I had intended to spend. The atmosphere in the salon was great. It had a lot of white and felt very clean without feeling like a hospital. Michael was very nice and very talented and everyone in the salon was really friendly. And after having read the previous reviews, it'll be no time before I'll have to start booking him in advice instead of walking in :) Thank you for the great hair Micheal!

This place is a RARE find: cute/hip atmosphere without being snooty, completely friendly staff, and flat out talented stylists -- all for a STEAL.

Michael Leon is my favorite. I've referred all of my friends to him, and I've got some picky, demanding friends w/ hard hair to cut. They're ALL loyal customers now. What's cool about Michael is that he's good enough for my demanding gay diva friends, yet down-to-earth enough for my straight friends who just want a good, cheap, manly hair-cut.

I get compliments everytime Michael cuts my hair -- and that's why every single one of my friends now has their hair cut by him.

Refuge is great!! It's a new and interesting set-up and has a great staff, especially Micheal Leon. Micheal has a keen understanding of what looks good on someone and he will always be honest. Having said that, if you don't want something new, he will do exactly what you ask of him. Several of my friends have gone to him (after seeing my hair) and his eye is impeccable, especially when it comes to color. The other stylists there are great too and I have seen their work when Micheal is doing mine and they are fantastic also. If you're looking for a new place to go, Refuge is one you should check out. Great staff loaded with talent!!!!

I've been going to Miriam for the last 4 years ever since she worked at Rudy's. I followed her to her new salon that she opened up and will continue to be a loyal patron until she retires. I wouldn't trust anyone with my hair except for Miriam. I've tried going to other people when I couldn't see her at certain times but deeply regretted it. She's the only one that "gets" me and understands exactly what I want. I don't even have to tell her what to do when I see her now, she just knows!
