If you're an experienced martial artist, then you know that there's a lot of bad instructors out there, who are either bad martial artists, bad teachers, or both. However the instructors at Berkeley Krav Maga are easily some of the highest caliber martial artists you will find, and will probably be among the best teachers you will have had in your life. For instance, a person may talk about how skilled they are (and may be truly skilled), but if they can't pass that knowledge on to you, then you should probably move on. If you want to learn golf you don't go to Tiger Woods, you go to Tiger Woods' coach. If you want to learn Krav Maga, you go to Danny Zelig (head instructor there). There's something special about a teacher who greets each one of his students by name and then proceeds train them to elbow people in the throat.

Krav Maga is a system of pure, simple, effective self defense. Groin kicks? Yes please. Biting? Why not. Americana from half guard? Uh... try again. Kicking people on the ground? Now that sounds more like it. Make no mistake, at this place after a couple of months you will be able to defend yourself on the street, which is more than I can say of other systems and of other Krav Maga places I've been to. I'll admit that I was a skeptic of the system when starting. I thought it would be more TaeBo than Fight Club, but even though the students range from 110lb girls to 50 year old men, they would be able to destroy me if I were to attack them. And I'm about 200lbs light.

But now for the basic stuff. Everyone there is extremely friendly, infact, it's the most newbie friendly martial art place I've been to (out of at dozen probably), extremely well equipped with pads, small weights, bags, ropes etc., and clean enough that you're not going to have to worry about it. The price I paid was standard for martial arts training.

Really, you can't go wrong with Berkeley Krav Maga. And there are a lot of other places where you can.

Pros: Amazing training, friendly and skilled teachers, newbie friendly, no egos, great value

Cons: they don't have locations all around the world
