K-Zo is easily the best Japanese food in Culver City. Their sushi is as delicious as their cooked dishes. The food is very clean tasting and there are so many interesting dishes on their menu. The atmosphere is surprisingly nice for being connected to the Trader Joe's parking lot. I highly recommend K-Zo!

Even though this sushi bar is located on the ground floor of a parking garage, the husband and wife team have created an excellent, casual sushi bar serving great lunches and affordable dinner in a contemporary, hip environment.

If you are in the mood for a quiet romantic spot, or an elegant night out, then try K-Zo. Overlook the fact that is is on Culver Blvd. tucked next to a Trader Joes and a parking garage and let your senses delight you. The fish is amazingly fresh and the enoki (mushroom) appetizer is incredible.

I live in south OC and drive up almost every weekend just to see Keizo and eat the best sushi ever! My boyfriend's sis is one of their favorite customers and eats there 3-4 times a week. Advice: Let Keizo pick what you eat. We never order for ourselves and always love what he provides. The price is high, but definitely worth even the drive! No sushi even compares.

K-ZO is what I would call a Japanese tapas bar. The menu is organized into small or large "bites" or dishes. You select from the wide assortment of choices to create a unique meal. Everything that I've had there has been excellent except for the grilled squid which was tough and had an plain soy based sauce. I recommend the fixed price menu.

With all the new restaurants budding in Culver City, it is nice to have a great japanese sushi restaurant. Kzo had a rocky start, but it is doing better than ever. The octopus dish is unbelievable. If you didn't like it the first time, give it another try...

I am not sure how this place got voted the "Best Sticky Rice" over others. It was good, but nowhere near as good as Katsuya or Koi. I ordered a few things off the menu - less than impressed with each. The black Cod was extremely fishy tasting which usually is not the case. The scallops were less than par and did not come as described on the menu. All in all, I left hungry.

I was happy/satisfied with every aspect of this restaurant. Highlights of my visit:

1. Goma Wild Chicken
2. Whitefish Yuzu
3.Gindara Saikyo
4. Ankimo
5. Lychee martini
6. Fresh sashimi
7. The best buta no kakuni (simmered pork) I've had in LA. The flavor, the texture, and the meat melted in my mouth.

Great place for 2-6 people, pleasant & modern ambience, great service as well.

A coworker of mine told me about K-Zo about a year and I still had not been. We decided to make an office/girls' night out of it and all my expectations were more than surpassed. We were seated immediately (without reservations - it was a Wednesday evening) by a very friendly hostess and our waiter arrived promptly with water and took drink orders (I definitely recommend the "Brass Fields" white wine). We let a co-worker who was familiar with the menu do the ordering and each dish was better than the last. They are known for their Spicy Tuna Crispy dish which combines crunchy warm rice with soft chilled spicy tuna in a way that is completely unexpected and delicious. Another item that we tried was the Spicy Jalape?o Shrimp Handroll which we ordered in soy paper rather than seaweed. It was incredible and definitely left me wanting more! Of the sushi, my favorites were the albacore, halibut, and the yellowtail, all of which were sliced generously and were artfully presented on a long serving plank. This is a perfect restaurant for sushi lovers and haters alike because of the extensive, non-sushi menu.

So my friends and I decided to go here on a Saturday night. We made a reservation beforehand. They seat us right away and the staff was friendly. However the items on the menu were quite expensive. None of us wanted to order the pre-fixe dinner so we have to choose from their small bites item, sushi and rolls. I had two of the rolls, and they were okay, nothing spectacular. The small bites were quite small and pricey for what they were. So not worth it.

We have been to K-Zo 9 times and are always eager to return. K-Zo, his wife, and the rest of the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The portions of sushi are large and very fresh, with lots of innovative ideas without going over the top. I am not fond of designer sushi, but do love the spicy tuna on crispy rice, and the "baby" fresh fish of the day. I especially like the fact that you can make a reservation for the sushi bar and your favorite sushi chef. There is an extensive sake selection and shochu (sp) as well. This is definitely a keeper restaurant, and a jewel for Culver City!

My girlfriend and I have been on a mission since we started dating to find LA's best sushi, and I think we finally found it. We've been to K-ZO four times, and it's been consistently spectacular every time. If you're a little adventurous, try the raw octopus. It is THE BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD!!! Don't go for the rolls (which are good, but a tragic waste of awesome fish).

On a side note, I think Nobu Matsuhisa (owner of Sushi Nobu and Matsuhisa) should be ashamed because K-ZO so completely kicks his restaurants' asses. Better service, (much) better food, and friendlier patrons are all reasons why K-ZO is unparalleled.

I flat out love this place and make it a point to give my friends gift certificates here whenever possible. The one downside is that Culver City isn't the easiest place to get to if you don't already live in the area. The restaurant is somewhat small so not ideal for large parties (though they have one table which can fit a large party), but for 2-4 people, it's a great place to get creative dishes, fresh fish and nice service. I almost always get the pre-set menu because it allows the chef to give us his best. You get a lot of food for the money too. What I like best is that the owner and the staff are very nice and always friendly. Definitely highly recommended.

Loved the tender rib eye and the fish of the day. Wonderful, richly flavored sauces and provocative combinations. Chef Kei is truly gifted. Wonderful service and atmosphere in the newly developed area of Culver City near Sony Studios. Sushi is very fresh with some innovative creations as well. Highly recommend. Without a doubt the best sushi in Los Angeles. Order from the chefs special menu - you're guaranteed the freshest, finest creations made from Keizo himself. This is Japanese cuisine at its best: creative, progressive & traditional at the same time, efficient, friendly - exactly what you'd find in Japan. Keizo comes from Roku, and thankfully left the Roku "scene" back on 3rd Street. Unparalleled!!!!

the place is nice and fairly popular so it is best to make reservations. i tried the albacore, yellowtail and salmon sashimi. they came with 4 pieces each but they are huge servings. i thought they tasted fresh and buttery. yum! i also tried the monk fish liver sushi, which i thought was just ok (echigo's is better). i tried the white shrimp and i was not impressed (sushi zo's is better). i tried the blue crab hand roll and i definitely was not impressed - echigo's and sasabune's are better. i would probably still come back because the sashimi is pretty good and come in big sized servings. plus, the service is pretty friendly and quick. the price is not cheap but not that expensive. they also have other items on the menu, i.e., they more than just sushi, sashimi and rolls.

I work in Beverly Hills, and live on the west side, so I thought I have been to all the great sushi restaurants. K-Zo is frankly the best sushi I have had in LA. I had heard about the owner and chef, though our sushi was prepared by another chef, who is truly an artist. From the temperature of the food to the presentation and service, this meal was unforgettable. The decor is very hip and cool - it would work for a date or just a relaxing dinner after work. It's worth every penny.

The restaurant is beautiful and the food is fantastic. We live in Santa Monica and all the great sushi places are always too crowded. I'm thrilled that there's finally a reason to travel to Culver City for dinner. It's always been a great place to stroll through but not necessarily ideal for dining. That's now changed. Service was helpful and attentive but not overdone. Will certainly return again and again.

WeI went on a date there on 11/10/06, at around 7p.m.. We ordered the food. The waitress took our order. The two of of the ordered dishes arrived promptly. Yet the two others have never arrived. After a long wait, I pointed it out to the waitress. She returned after quite a long delay, with no food, and mumbling something apologetic.
We told her that we had a movie to catch, and asked just to bring a bill. She left, and there was another long-long waiting. Finally, I got up and told my date that we had to go if we wanted not to be late for the movie.
It was only on our way out that I got the bill.. I paid the bill, and we left, very frustrated., and quite hungry. Had I had more time I would have talked to a manager about the service, and that they dared to charge me for the meal that they completely screwed up. BAD SERVICE!

This is great & creative sushi -- much better than 'standards' like Roku, etc and worth the trip. Sometimes creative can be a bad thing at sushi places but at K-Zo they're not out to impress you with their creativity (nothing over-the-top), they simply want to provide you with tasty food and an enjoyable eating experience. The service at K-Zo is wonderful -- everyone is so nice and accommodating and take clear strides to make sure that you have an enjoyable dinner. Quite possibly the nicest service I've had at any restaurant in LA.

If there's just two of you, consider sitting at the sake bar; otherwise, the whole restaurant a pleasant atmosphere that is not too loud or overwhelming.

I've only eaten here 2x since opening, but both times were really positive experiences. I would have to disagree with the last review that this is the only decent restaurant worth going to in Culver City (true foodies would know Culver City has had many critically-acclaimed chefs opening their own restos in the city), as this would seem to lower K-Zos standards. Even among the many great restaurants in the city, K-Zo still is one of the more memorable ones. I don't particularly like sushi that's not strictly Japanese (such as Sushi Roku, etc..), but K-Zo (who specializes in Jap-French cuisine) has done a great job with his place, that I can't help but be all praises. The restaurant is modern and minimal, though a bit small. Almost everything we tried was great, and I would recommend going through the daily specials. The best thing about the place is K-Zo himself (and his staff, as well). Everyone is so open and friendly, and this place has no pretensions at all. The crowd is mostly a mix of studio execs and employees from the studios, but it's such a fun atmosphere, as K-Zo truly mingles with his patrons. Usual bill for 2 is around $120.

I have had the chance to go to K-Zo's a couple of times now, and found it to easily be the nicest restaurant with the highest quality food in Culver City. If it were not for an associate of mine telling me about it, I would have NEVER gone to Culver City for food in the first place (sure there are studios there, but not great restaurants, UNTIL NOW!). K-Zo's is easily the best restaurant in that town, its: food, atmosphere and service are more on par with the greater restaurants in Los Angeles, or Beverly Hills than the whole of what Culver City or its surrounding area have to offer. It is an oasis, in the otherwise tepid pond of Culver City.

Oh... and don't forget to check out the hand dryer in the rest room... it's the most powerful you may ever encounter!

Having grown up in Hawai'i my bar for great fish/sushi is REAL high. Keizo you have raised the bar! Like most "foodies" in LA, we all wish we could eat/afford great sushi every night, but that's just not the case. I think I'll make an exception here. I've been going Sushi Roku for years when I first got introduced to Keizo and his brand/style for great Japanese food and now that he is on his own, I think he has saved the best for his own restaurant. Go to Hollywood for the scene, go to K-zo's for the service, food and the chef.

tasting the salads. Albacore, calamari, seared tuna,
salmon skin salads were all good. The tuna tasted
like a rare rib eye steak. Eggplant was also good.
White fish with a pepper citrus seasoning was
outstanding. Facility was simple, modern, clean and
very comfortable. Ended things with a sesame ice
cream. Amazing. Above all, the personal attention
given was 5 star.

The sushi at K-ZO is first class-- hand selected from the best domestic and Japanese offerings. If its not the best fish available, you wont find it here. But the real art is in the preparation. Halibut (hirame) may be presented in two ways-- with a light dusting of fresh yuzu essence and engawa-- the edge of this delicate, flat fish. With enough variety to please both casual eater and connoisseur, Keizo is equally comfortable making the most of Tokyo style sushi and presenting his own innovations-- toro so perfectly seared that the surface glistens while the inside remains cool, big-eye tuna sashimi presented like the fanning petals of a rose, uni combined with marinated salmon caviar-- the presentation alone is enough to take your breath away. Dont miss the Spicy Tuna Crispy, perfectly baked crispy brown rice topped with seasoned tuna tartar. The live scallop (hotate) is a meal in itself: the main part of the scallop being divided into sushi and sashimi, the rest roasted in the shell with fresh mushrooms. Keizos formal training in French cuisine becomes apparent with the numerous small plate creations from the kitchen-- ranging from Baked Pink Scallops to Foie Gras Daikon and Seafood Gratin. Each meal becomes a tasting menu on its own-- with every dish arriving on a specially selected plate. An extensive sake list compliments the unique and varied menu. Funaguchi Kikusui, a full bodied and well balanced draft style sake is exclusively available here. Also featured are a number of Shochu cocktails. This vodka-like Japanese spirit distilled from various types of grain compliments the delicate flavors of the food. There are two enticing prix fix menus to choose from, but for a truly unforgettable experience, ask Keizo to create an omakase (Chefs Choice) meal and let him do his magic.

I've been to all the fancy, expensive and out-of-the-way sushi bars but the new K-Zo restaurant is such a special place that it just doesn't make sense to go anywhere else. The sushi is prepared with such flare and experience. The atmosphere is welcoming and of course Keizo (head chef/owner) graces the restaurant with is own personable, humble and fun-loving personality. Between the deliciously distinctive sushi and the wonderful service & atmosphereI'll never need to go to any other sushi restaurant. Arigato K-ZO!

If you love sushi, this place is for you. It doesn't matter what you order, it will be prepared beautifully and just melt in your mouth. And if you also like tapas, you can't go wrong any of their salads and apps. So far we've had the albacore salad, spicy calamari salad, seafood ceviche and crab cakes. Can't wait to try the rest.

The food is excellent and the service is very friendly and attentive. Keizo has done an amazing job. His warm smile and laugh are infectious, you can't help walk out without a smile on your face too.

We won't go anywhere else for sushi now. K-ZO is thee place to go!

The service is impeccable, the location is great (Culver City is the 'it' town), but most of all, the food is amazing. I've been to tons of sushi restaurants for years, but this is my new favorite. Generous fish portions on the sushi, incredible array of small bite plates, and everything I've tried has been soooo tasty. I can't wait to go back!!
