Ratings_icons Zena Day Spa & Nails is the worst place to relax

megan m.

worst place to relax. All I heard was two fat women yelling at each other in arabic. Reda did my hair and totally ruined it. she has no clue what she is doing. However, she does know how to tell people about her money troubles and how her loan fell through. My advice to people is save the trouble of going there you will regret it.

Ratings_icons Zena Day Spa & Nails - AWESOME

Jennifer B.

My friend had gotten her lip liner done at Zena's 2 years ago (before it expanded), and it looked so good, I had to see about getting it done for myself.

I called to make an appointment with Lorine (pronounced lo-REEN, like Maurene), and she set up a consult for the next day.

When we got there (I brought my friend who'd been there before), there was plenty of parking in the lot behind the spa. Lorine gave us a tour of the newly renovated facility. It's beautiful - Egyptian themed (Lorine is Egyptian), and makes you feel like Queen Cleopatra. Although we went to see about permanent make-up, it is a full-service spa and salon.

She immediately got us some juice and took my friend and I in the back to talk about what we wanted and what she recommended.

Lorine knows her stuff. She looked at our faces, made some recommendations, then applied pencil color so that we could see what the end result would look like. It looked amazing.

We negotiated on a very fair price, since my friend is a return customer. She was able to do our permanent make-up right away. We walked out extremely happy.

Some suggestions for first-time permanent make-up clients (take it from 2 experienced chicks ;):

Take some Advil about 30 minutes before beginning the procedure.

Bring one of those ice-packs that they put in first aid kits - when you're ready to use them, you stomp on them and they get cold.

If you get your eyes done, have someone drive you or give yourself at least 30 minutes to rest after the procedure. Both times I've had my eyes done (10 years ago in DC, and at Zena's), my eyes have felt sore for an hour or so following the procedure, and vision is little bit blurry for a few minutes just because of the salv-like anti-biotic that she puts on following the treatment.

If you get your lips done, buy some Abreva, and if you are prone to cold sores, get a prescription for the herpes medication from your doctor (I know it sounds funny, but you can use that stuff for mouth cold sores, which might possibly erupt due to the treatment) and start the 7 day pill cycle the same day. (Hopefully you won't have any cold sores erupt, but this is a preventative measure.)

EXPECT to look like a clown for a couple of days, maybe a week! Believe us, we've done it before. It looks crazy following the procedure - if you're self-conscious and have the time, take a couple days off work. Once the skin begins to heal and absorb the color, it looks just like it did when she showed you with pencils. DON'T WORRY - it doesn't stay the way it looks right after the procedure.

Expect the organic color to lasts between 2 & 5 years (it will eventually be absorbed by the body, so it isn't permanent like a tattoo in that sense) . My friend's lip liner still looked good after two years, she just wanted it a little darker. My iron-oxide color on my eyes that I'd gotten 10 years ago in DC had faded after 5 years, and there were no traces.

Ratings_icons Horrible Place..Never go

Nichole L.

Although they may seem friendly these people care about nothing but making money. They do not properly sanitize there equipment, they don't care about keeping their clients safe. I have seen first hand them use a file on someone else and not throw it away to turn around and use the same file on the next person! This is against the law and they could get into a lot of trouble if they ever got reported!! I don't recommend anyone going to this place for any service!

Ratings_icons Terrible!

Michelle M.

Even tho I had booked my appt for a fill/pedicure/eyebrow wax with the owner I was told (along with a repeat customer) that we were not on the books. The environment was chaotic (hardly the calming/relaxing experience one would like) water was all over the floor where the owner had left the fridge defrosting. 2 hours later and I was done. All in all twice as long as it usually takes when I go to my normal salon. While I believe that Mia and Bebe are very competent, they were too rushed trying to accommodate all of us "walk-ins" and the end result left me with a bruise on my eyelid from a harried wax job. After speaking with Lorin (the owner)on the phone (she had left early) she accepted NO responsibility for my missing appointment and was not in the least regretful of a disappointing experience for a first time customer. From now on I will be going to HI-Lite Nails in the valley where I can rely on speedy/gracious and competent services.

Ratings_icons Fabulous eyeliner perminant make-up

C4peaches

As someone who likes to wear minimal make-up and strives for a natural beauty appearance, the "Lash enhancement eyeliner" was the perfect choice for me. Quite a few of the women at the salon told me they had work done here and I was sold by how amazing and natural it all looked! Once the swelling and excess ink went away within a few days, the eyeliner looked fabulous and exactly what I wanted! Lorine chose a color that accented my eyes perfectly. The think line was seated between my lashes and had a wonderful appearance ofmaking my lashes more prominant. She is defintiley an artist in the work she does! She also numbed me first, so that it mostly tickeled. I have to admit that I was stressed about having needeles by my eyes, but that was my own mental stress and not her work. I highly recommend Lorine to anyone who wants perminant make-up!!

Pros: Fabulous work

Cons: location was far for me (live in Glendale), but worth it

The time they spend on each person during the facial is really nice. They also provide mini massages that are great. They even have rooms where you can go with a friend and enjoy a facial together. They are a bit pricey but it's well worth the trip. Their mani pedi is pretty nice too.

Pros: They use good products and the attention they give is great.

Cons: It's a little pricey.

Ratings_icons great customer service

msfoxylisa

I got my permanent eyebrows done. I absolutely LOVED how they came out. They fit me so natural. For those who've complained about the outcomes, i really don't understand as to how you weren't satisfied. I get complimented all the time. Twoof my friends have give gotten theirs done as well. Not only is the pigmentation of the eyebrows so natural looking but the price is affordable.

I also started doing my photofacials and its a painless prodecure. My face has gotten less zits and blemishes. I regret getting all those chemical peels hence they are not quite efficient. If you get a facial go to Mimi. She is not only good at doing great facials but she takes her time and makes sure her customers are happy.. With this being said; i recommend this spa is you're looking for Beverly Hills quality.

I have always struggled to find a great hairdresser who knows how to deal with crazy, curly, mixed kinda hair. I met Ken recently while on one of my business trips to LA and absolutely fell in love with the way he cuts hair. Not only did my hair look great immediately....but the proof is in how it grows out...and it is STILL fabulous! If you are ever in Culver City CA and need a great hair cut..curly haired folks...go to Zena's Day Spa on Sepulveda right off the 405 freeway at Culver!

Pros: If you have extremely curly hair

Ratings_icons Are you kidding?

coochiemane

I will undoubtedly say the place is beautiful, however, the facility alone couldn't rescue this place. Despite their ability to speak English, the women are rude. There is such a rushed feeling to all the services. Particularly when the owner is there. I once went in to get a facial as well as a mani and pedi, and once I saw another woman getting her facial, I decided against it. I asked the owner and she said I would have to wait, and I was in a hurry, so I said I would go else where. She began trying to rush the facial she was currently performing( which might I add, was in some tiny room. Im sure the poor woman could hear everything going on in the salon).I insisted that I didn't want it. Immediately the owner came to me and got in my face, asking what was wrong. She tried so persistently to convince me to get it there, but I wasn't having it. Then I got fed up and went to a different spa, which might i add, was wonderful.

This is ideal if you like a noisy environment; someone who speaks your language to successfully pester you, when all you want is a silent manicure. Im not here to gossip, im here to relax. thanks but no thanks. I like my facials uninterrupted too. Why pay so much to come out feeling worse than when you went in?

Oh yeah, and the positive reviews this place has received are obviously done by the business owners and employees. You should attempt not to be so redundant and obvious! pffft.

Pros: facility

Cons: service

Ear2009

It was horrible and she damaged my face. She also promised so much and when it did not turn out right, she charged me $300 more to "fix" it and then didn't fix it. Her son was complaining and pulling on her arm the whole time she was poking me with the tattoo pen and she allowed it, resentful that she couldn't fix the color. I should have sued them.

Ratings_icons Best service in the 20 years i have been going to salons!!!!!

racebratt3

I admit, I want to be Barbie! I have been going to salons for the past 20 years for every king of procedure under the sun. Manicures, pedicures, full sets, waxing, facials, hair cuts and color. i almost never return to the same place because i am so picky that no one ever gets it right! About 8 months ago I was walking down the street and thought i'd give it a shot. I will never go to another salon again. Not only does everyone speak english, but they LISTEN to me.They have great prices, and now I actually feel like part of the family. THANX ZENA SPA for being the last great spa around!!!!!

Ratings_icons Wonderful if you want permanent makeup

2676

Even though there were places I could go that were much closer to where I live, I wanted to find an artist who had a lot of experience whom I could trust. After an extensive search I settled on Zena Day Spa. Permanent makeup is something that isn't easy to redo so I wanted to be choosy. I have to say, I am so very happy with the results and have had many compliments on the permanent makeup. I would recommend Zena Day Spa to anyone interested in getting a professional permanent makeup procedure done.

Ratings_icons Terrible Experience

pam1888

Xena did my eyebrows and quoted me over the phone a price of $375. When I got there, she upped the price and told me to "trust her." If she messed up my color, she would re-do it for free. Well, it turned out gray when it was supposed to be an orange brown to match my hair. When I called her 6 weeks later for the re-touch, she told me it was $75. When I actually got to her salon, she doubled the price to $150. She also did not correct my color enough. It still looks gray. She also was screaming at employees while tatooing my face and would not wait for the anesthesia to take affect and it hurt so bad, I was in tears. If she only waited 5 minutes for the anesthesia, it would have been numb. But she was in a such a rush, she did not care about my pain.

Cons: Awful

I go to this shop for the past four month and I am very happy with there service, and I don?t like it when people just bad mouth a business. I don?t think you can please everyone but at least if you?re not happy you can complain to the manger or the supervisor and see what they would say if your not happy with there respond. Then you can bad mouth it.
Since I love this store I told the owner about this promo deal and she had explain that They had a promotion company that sold some promotion certificate and the customer thought they will get everything for free because they paid $57.00 for 4 visits but this promotion only provide minimal trial service its not full service if the client want a full service they can pay the deference of the cost and if they don?t like, they can return it to the promo company. If you have the promotion package please read the bonus on the side before your service and see if this is for you. Other wise you can ask for marina miya or lorin they provide great service.

I have been Visiting this spa for the past year and they are the best in all they do! The Facials are outstanding with immediate results! If you have not had a manicure or pedicure from them your really missing out. As to the other writer's you propably have not been to a real spa they cost WAY more then the Zena Spa. Not only are their prices reasonable but they have the best friendly, family like atmosphere you can't get any where else. So if your ready for a relaxing experience you can not get any where else you must visit The Zena Spa!

Pros: Outstanding services and products, superb customer service skills

Cons: traffic on Culver Blvd.

Same bad experience as many others so I wasn't going to bother posting til I noted that the positive postings all read about the same (mentioning things like english speaking staff -- who cares? and how critics don't understand the promotional material) so obviously the owners are trying to pump up their ratings. I had the promo too. Had to bring it in with handwritten notes made by the staff to get even minimal service. Staff attemped upselling before I even said hello or made my appointment. Same painful bad manicure and ped and manicurist was eating a sandwich as he did my nails. Many other places nearby with much better service. Don't bother.

Update: 4/4/09 less than one week after posting my negative review two glowing reviews magically appear on the same date? More proof that staff is falsely inflating ratings

Pros: interesting decor

Cons: terrible staff with poor skills

Lorin, the owner, is very knowledgeable about many aspects of her salon. She can tell you anything you need to know about permanent makeup, laser hair removal, all types of options. She is an artist at heart, so you know that your permanent makeup will look good and last! She is very fair with pricing. She even made my eyelashes look longer and curl up without having to use fake ones. And the pricing was fair. She is friendly and makes you feel at home when you are at her salon. I highly recommend calling her up and setting up at least a consultation. I visit her regularly for my mani pedi as well.

I discovered Zena's a few months ago and I love it. The salon is clean and the decor and music are very relaxing. They even have a big screen tv in case there is a show you don't want to miss while getting your nails done. The spa manicure and pedicure are great - I especially love the arm and leg massages that accompany this service. Speaking of service, the girls that work there are very funny. It's nice to walk into a salon where everyone speaks English...no more wondering if they are talking about you in a different language. I used to hate that at other salons. At Zena you can laugh along when they joke and tease one another because you can understand what they are saying. I must say, my absolute favorite discovery is the eyelash perming. I have eyelashes that are so straight they almost droop over my eyes - the eyelash perm makes them beautifully curly. Even without mascara my lashes look lovely. I highly recommend it to everyone with straight lashes. My sister visited from Arizona (she has straight/droopy lashes too) and she loved my lashes so much that I took her to have it done as well. They are supposed to open the upstairs portion of the salon soon and will offer spa services - I can't wait!

Pros: Ambience, Customer Service, English Speaking

Cons: Parking at meters is only 1-hour, but they will feed it for you to avoid tickets

Ratings_icons Worse facial ever

roxita

I got a facial at Zena's.
When I came in, Marina recommended to me the Microdermabrasion saying I needed it (it was obviously the most expensive facial they had, but I had my Citysearch 10% discount!)
While she was doing the dermabrasion I said it was hurting, could you please be more gentle?. Marina's response was: Are you gonna let me do your extractions?

The right side of my chin got really swollen that afternoon because or the Microdermabrasion. Then it became a bruise which resulted in a big scab and later on in a scar.

I went back the day after the facial to get an explanation of what had happened to me; Marina was very apologetic, she said they would give me my money back I just had to wait for the owner.
When the owner came she said it was normal to have those bruises ( I have had a series of Microdermabrasion before and I never got one bruise) and that in the next week they would go away.
She also said she couldn't give me my money back because it would be admitting they did something wrong!
I cried for 2 days. I had to see a doctor friend of mine and a dermatologist to help expedite the healing process. I now have a permanent scar.
It is the first time I have written a review on a site, the reason I am sharing my story with you is to warn you to not get your face ruined like mine...

I went to try this place because they had a package of 4 visits for only $57.00 witch is a very good deal. the staff are very friendly and they are very funny. I have upgraded to there royal spa pedicure and manicure and it was to die for the best service I had.

There is some people that don?t appreciate quality work they want everything for free. I have read a review after my visit about that leady that paid $20.00 to upgrade and she said it was nothing will she does not understood how those packages work, when I spoke to the owner she had explained to me that there was a promotion company that give these promo packages for 4 visits with each visit a different service witch means each service is $13.00 but is so sad that only cheap people would go out far to say something is bad, however I was told that they don?t make any money from the packages because the promotion company keeps all the money she does it so new clients come and try the place when they just started. There regular prices are very reasonable I bought the certificate and I tried there service and i am very happy I used there service I will go back specially when they have a full spa Pedicure and manicure for only $20.00 and they have eyelash perm that lasts for three month for $35.00. great place to try go and see for your self.

Pros: great service, nice staff

Ratings_icons One EXPENSIVE bargain.

itstoobig

I got one of those "bargain" packages for $60 that allow for 4 different visits to "experience" all that this "spa" has to offer, and after the 1st visit I can't fathom anybody wanting to go back. The first visit was a mani/pedi that apparently I had to "upgrade" to a full spa mani/pedi for an extra $20, but when I asked what the difference was between the mani/pedi I had already paid for and the upgrade...there was none. At least nothing she could think up fast enough. Ultimately, the job was mediocre and the service was less than enthusiastic or friendly, especially once they know you purchased a 4-visit package. Well, the purpose of the 4-visit packages is to impress new clients and have them come back and recommend to others...yet, i walked out of there dreading my next 3 visits. It's really too bad.

Pros: LOTS LOTS of room for improvement

Cons: LOTS LOTS of need for improvement

I walked in for a manicure & pedicure the staff were great, friendly and very clean. It was the best nail service I ever had. The mani/ pedi were $28.00 but it was a full spa manicure & pedicure with long arm and foot massage and full sea salt scrub. They have a great nail hardener that kept my polish last for two weeks. I loved the service and there friendly staff. This will be my favorite nail spa. A nail spa with full staff that speaks only English!!!

Pros: great work , friendly staff

Cons: none so far

Ratings_icons Worst facial, manicure and pedicure of my entire life. Don't let the name fool you- it's not a spa by any stretch of the imagination.

This place is a rip off. You go in for a mini-facial and all that is is they wash your face and that's it! I could do that at home!

They hard-sell you into paying extra for micro-dermabrasion or to upgrade into an enzyme facial. The technician performing micro-dermabrasion is clearly not qualified bec. she did my entire face in 5 minutes. If you've ever had a proper micro-dermabrasion at a licensed facility, it will be painfully obvious that she has no idea what she's doing and it was purely a ploy to charge you more.

I also had a mani and pedi done there the same day. Again..they told me that I need to upgrade because the express mani and pedi is really just changing the nail polish. I pay for the upgrade and the manicurist came very close to cutting the tips of my fingers every time she went to clip my finger nails. She was also incredibly rough when pushing my cuticles back. My cuticles were red and irritated at the end of the mani & pedicure. In the end the shape of my nails were completely wonky- not rounded and not squared- they were mis-shaped. Complete waste of my time and money. Run away from this place. There are more reputable nail salons.

Pros: None

Cons: Horrible service, rip-off artists, no parking.
