It is rare when you find great food, at cheap prices, done quicker than your typical wait time at a busy drive-through place. Well Paesanos Pronto can't claim any of those descriptions, let alone all three, but it does stand close enough on all three points to make it worthy of consideration for a casual lunch or dinner meal.

The setup at Pronto is pretty typical of this type of restaurant--you wait in line to order at the counter, you are given a pager device which will buzz and flash when your order is ready, and then you pick up your food at the large window into the kitchen. You interact with both the counter staff and the kitchen staff who are all friendly, but focused on the tasks at hand.

The food is Italian and American comfort food--pastas, sandwiches and paninis, polenta bowls, rotisserie chicken and tri-tip, and meatloaf. A nice round-up of sides are available as well - mashed potatoes, lemon garlic green beans, four-cheese macaroni, asiago garlic fries, and garlic bread. Perhaps most popular are the salads at Pronto, which are taken very seriously by the kitchen and happen to be enormous in size.

Pronto is a "solid" restaurant. There is not much variation from visit to visit. Everything they make is good, some items like the macaroni and cheese and the lemon garlic beans approach greatness.

This place handles a large Downtown lunch crowd M-F and fills-up with locals (usually without the lunchtime frenzy) most evenings between 6 and 8.

The seats are not designed for a lingering experience, though there is never any pressure from the staff to make way for other customers.

A self-service soda fountain, gelato bar, and beer and wine availability round out the Pronto offerings.

A full-bar is available at the much smaller sister restaurant, Uncle Vito's Pizza, that shares a hallway, bathrooms, and occasionally its throbbing music with Pronto.

Paesanos Pronto is a worthy member of the Paesanos empire of restaurants in Sacramento.

A bit pricey for the quantities and the quality. An Italian place should know how not to make lousy gummy polenta, but that's what came out of the kitchen. My dining companion said his pastrami sandwich was definitely substandard and the chips made there were greasy and cold.
