I was initially hesitant to go to a restaurant that is so "covered" in the press and is full of Hollywood biz people. I will say, however, that I had such an incredible experience here. Love it!

Stopped in here earlier this week for dinner. Taking in the neighborhood, I was expecting a bevy of rail thin waifs to be overpopulating the bar, but the original Katsuya has quite a different vibe from its neighbors or even its Hollywood

Brentwood has some fine eateries. This is not the best one I can imagine. Just a ways down the street are fine Sushi alternatives. For a bit more dough, I'd hit up Nobu any day of the week.

The Starck interior is fun the first time

This place was really fun to enjoy food and hang out with friends. We all decided it would be best if we all chose 3 random sushi orders/per person and share. I chose the baked crab roll, sunset roll, and the shrimp tempura roll. We got our drinks and food in a timely manner, which was good because we were all pretty hungry. When our sushi arrived it looked like service for a king! We all dove into our random choices and enjoyed. There was 6 of us and normally when it's that large of a party I normally deal with limited space and an uncomfortable environment. That was not a problem here at Katsuya. Our table was spacious and we could all enjoy our food without elbowing each other. Whenever I reminisce about that night, I always drool with hunger. I've never had such great sushi in my life!! Anyways, point of this review. If you like sushi and want to have a good time. I definitely recommend this place!

Walking into this place, you know it's not just another LA restaurant trying to look hip. The vision behind the Katsuya'ss is evident from the minute you see the lush interior. Hip, yet doesn't feel in your face. But what I really came here to talk about was the food. Rich flavors with great presentation. I recommend the Spicy Albacore Sashimi with Crispy Onion or Yellowtail Sashimi w/ Jalapeno. Those are mouth watering as this is some of the freshest fish in town.

If you stick to the Katsuya classics (spicy tuna on rice etc.) you'll do just fine at this location and the Hollywood location. Stay away from the Brand and Downtown. Great date vibes and sleek interior (especially at the Vine Street Katsuya). If you want the REAL experience. however, get to the original Katsuya in Studio City or Kiwami, where you'll find the chef who started it all.

never any attitude from the staff. prices are a little on the high end, but it is an upscale place so this is expected. the dishes are some of the best around, but most of them are non-traditional, so if you're looking for traditional sushi, then this may not be the best place for you.

When you sit down you are asked if you want "edaname or peppers" and I said edaname. Got the bill and they charged us $6 for the edaname! I figured it was given to us when asked the way the waiters do. When we ordered bottled water for our table they brought out 2 Vossis and we had to send one back. Mind you we didn't ask for 2.

I kid you not that there was a children's birthday party with 7 or 8 year olds next to us that were loud and all over the place. There were 7 of the kids and the mom was taking 1000s of pictures the whole time.

I would say it is more a family restaurant than a hot spot. Given it's in Brentwood and that's more a family atmosphere I'm not surprised but for the $$$$ food you may want to pick your sushi up elsewhere to avoid children's parties.

I noticed only 5 tables of two in the whole restaurant! That tells you that it's more a family type place with a Hollywood decor in my opinion.

The food was good but they do RUSH YOU! They don't believe in enjoying each item. We got our baked crab rolls, creamy shrimp and tempura at the same time! It was cold by the time we finished them. I had to ask the waiter to hold off on our entrees so we could catch up!

Hope this helps you!

If you order bottled water they will bring you more than one bottle. We had a table of 4 and they brought out 2. We only ordered one and so we sent the other back. $3 for a bowl of rice? Really Katsuya?

Besides those annoying little things the place has fresh and good food. I would go back but with caution and call them on their antics.

We live right behind this pretentious all looks and no flavor restaurant . Since it is so close we have eatent here a few times for convenience. It is true that the hostess and wait staff are attractive. They think they're celebrities and serving you is beneath them. The food, however is mediocre at best. The spicy tuna rolls made us sick. While this is a good place to be seen, go elsewhere for dinner. Tagao down the street has much better fish as does Sasabune on Wilshire or even Asakuma on Barrington which has the best miso marinated cod in LA. By the way, Katsuya's drinks and saki menu are substandard too. They served us a nasty Nigori saki with chunks of floating sour rice in it. The waiter told us that most people send it back.

Pompous wait staff and OK sushi. Asked waitperson if the Uni was good, she looked surprised and said we get little boxes in every other day, well the Uni I was served and returned was over a week old.

I suggest that they take the Chef?s, wait staff and management for a field trip to Sushi Gen in Little Tokyo for some of the most decent fish in LA.

So I must admit, the decor of this restaurant (especially by the back bar) is different. Very LA, very trendy...the table settings are different, they have you dining on a couch and long fancy table vs the regular 4 seater tables. The hostess, waiter/waitresses are good looking. But wait...didn't we come here to eat? With all the hype, I thought the sushi was extremely mediocre. What happened to authentic good sushi? Instead of these fancy rolls with fancy names, why don't we stick to good food and good sushi. If you want to pay to be trendy and eat 'ok' food then this is the restaurant for you.

I looked forward to the evening as I've heard good reviews. I arrived early for my Thursday evening reservation and checked in with the hostess; she recommended I await my date at the bar (in the front room). However, my date arrived minutes earlier and the hostess had walked her to that other bar (in the back dining room not visible from the front). We never met up, needless to say the evening was ruined. While waiting in the front bar, the bartender had incredible attitude and seemed bothered to make a simple martini and his mood did not change despite my $5 tip on a $12 drink. The other three ladies at the front bar couldn't have been less comfortable as the bartender made no effort to chat to them while they apparently awaited their dates too. Lastly, I was stunned by the number of west side mommies dining with their small children - simply ridiculous watching so many 5-10 yr olds struggle with chopsticks to eat sushi. I will not attempt a second evening there. If you want to see countless actor wannabes pretending to be hostesses, bartenders, and waiters, then by all means check it out. Otherwise, move on.

My first time to acutally dine inside Katsuya was last week at the location in Hollywood. I was impressed by the decor inside and pleased that the door was opened for me to go inside. I had no reservations and was still accomodated and the staff was really really nice. I had to go to the bar for like just 10 mins then was seated at the sushi bar. I definitely plan to go back. As a matter of fact Im going today to the Brentwood location with my co workers. whoooooooo hoooooooo
Im going to order a cosmo. If you have not yet had the opportunity to go I strongly suggest you do. Make sure you dont forget your wallet.

We showed up on the Thursday night without reservations. We were looking for somewhere close to the Pantages as we had tickets to Wicked. We were told to wait at the bar and finally the hostess (total lack of personality) came over and agreed to seat us. Now this was 5:30 and no one was there. As we were being seated she told us she would seat us but we needed to be out of there by 7:15 as she had reservations coming in.. Slow service, everyone served at different times so no one was eating together. Bartenders were very nice and friendly and the food was good, not awesome just good. Five people eating sushi and having a drink should not spend over $200.00 will not recommend

My absolute FAVORITE sushi place!! I eat here every chance I get. Very cool and trendy atmosphere. If you get a chance to sit outside (they only have 2 tables and you have a party of 4 or less) I would definitely sit outside because it can get really noisy inside. Also, make your reservations ASAP otherwise it's can be difficult to get one for a time you want. Weekdays get booked too!

Our experience started with the hostesses who were both congenial and accomodating. We made reservations one week in advance, and we were seated immediately after walking through the door. Once seated our waitress took our drink orders within minutes and a brief time later our entree orders were taken. The waitress offered some great entree suggestions, some of which we took and were very pleased with. My girlfriend ordered the white grapefuit comso which she loved, and we had a bottle of Australian shiraz which was a bit dry but went great with the meal. We had the kobe beef with foie gras, spicy tuna on crispy rice, baked shrimp roll, herb crusted seared tuna with spicy mustard, miso glazed black cod, and the creme brulee. Supremo delicioso!!!!!!! I would highly reccomend the restaurant--its a great way to make a special occasion fun and memorable.

I adored Katsuya -- the decor is beyond fab, the service is excellent (they will do anything to please) and the food is divine. Above all, it always feels like a cocktail party in there. Fun patrons who intermingle with one another at the sushi bar and a very relaxed vibe. Love it. Don't tell anybody.

I'll leave it to others to tell you the pros/cons about the wait, scene, etc. I will say 2 things: 1) must order crispy onion albacore and crispy rice spicy tuna 2) Try the original Katsuyas in the Valley, even if you go to this one and think it's overrated. They are small casual restaurants with the same menu but lower prices and bigger portions (and some would say better food). Don't let the hype of the Sam Nazarian Westside and Hollywood Katsuya's deter you from trying delicious and affordable sushi in LA (or in the Valley I should say).

I have been to this restaurant three times in the past 2 months. Their spicy tuna cripy rice and nice deco kept me going back. Their menu is very similar to KOI. & To be honest, the food and price are both one notch below KOI. But driving to KOI at diner time from Santa Monica is a pain. I rather dine at Katsuya ( I guess the one notch difference is not significant enough). Somehow I feel like it's an appropriate place for family gathering. I saw people bringing baby in strollers and small kids. I guess it's because of the neighbourhood. Service is not bad as compared to all other Japanese restaurants I have been to. Much better deco than Nobu Malibu, Takao, Matsuhisa and etc. I would recommend people who live on the westside to give it a try.

I have dined there once before, and the food and drinks were ok, presentation was also average. For my husbands birthday I made a reservation a week and a half prior for a party of 11-12. We had friends from out of town coming who had really wanted to dine there...I call on the day of the reservation to preorder some wine and dessert, and they tell me they lost my reservation! I get no apologies, and nothing but attitude from 2 different hostesses and then finally the manager who also gave me total attitude. They asked repeatedly if I have dined there before as if they were evaluating whether or not I was important enough to honor my reservation. After about 7 minutes of being put on hold, they tell me they have one table for me that can fit 10, and the table the I had specifically reserved was being used for another party! This will be my last time dining there, and I am sure a few words will be exchanged between me and the hostess once I have finished my dinner and a martini or two!!!!!!!!

Pros: ambience and people watching

Cons: They have total attitude!!!!!!!!! Very rude. poor service

If possible, I would be at Katsuya every night. The food is delicious and fresh and the choices are endless. Every dish is served with a flare and the staff is well trained. Sure it's expensive, but what isn't that's worthwhile.

Contrary to what some of these other reviewers are saying, I have been here & I had an excellent experience. My out-of-town friend & I stopped in on a Friday nite w/o a reservation and told we could go have a drink at the bar while we waited for a table (which didnt take long). The white peach martini was fabulous, altho a little strong even though i asked for it not to be & the bartender was super friendly. We then were seated in the center of the main room in front of the robata or whatever you call it & proceeded to order things like those unusual peppers (that aren't hot), salmon nigiri (not outstanding, but good enough), the miso-glazed black cod in banana leaf (melt-in-your-mouth delicious!) and other things i'm blanking on. All in all, it's pricey, but as a fan of Philippe Starck's design, it's a place I had to try at least once and I"m glad I did. The back area room w/the big Alice in Wonderland mirrors and signature Starck cuckoo clocks (they're in Asia de Cuba @ the Mondrian as well) were cool but in general, the crowd wasn't so cool - a little too homogeneous if you know what i mean -- then again, I shouldn't be surprised considering it's Brentwood.

This place is for people with little appreciation for good food but who can afford to go to an expensive restaurant, with decent quality food. Typical LA Hollywood ambiance with pretty Ladies and gents . Not good enough for me to recommend you going here.
On the other hand, I like the 3 kitchen idea but the lay out of the restaurant and its kitchens, and the quality of the food crush the good concept.

What a joke. I've eaten at great sushi restaurants all over LA. With Katsuya in the Valley, as well as the new location on Third St., which are both fantastic, I thought the Brentwood location would be just as spectacular. NOT SO. First off, I placed an order over the phone for pick-up. When I arrived at the restaurant, they informed me that the sushi chef will not make a special order I requested (since my wife is pregnant, I asked to change the spicy tuna on the crispy rice with avocado). They said this is their 'signature dish', and they will not alter it. Wow. Maybe I should have asked the sushi chef for his autograph. Then I noticed, after the fact, that they charged me a 'service charge' of $15 for pick-up. What?! I'm just picking up the food. And finally, I phoned in the order.....and waited at the restaurant for almost 40 minutes.

So, I will NEVER again go to the Brentwood Katsuya.. And, word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

I have ALOT of friends.

Always a fun time at Katsuya. The drinks are perfect, a perfect blend of flavours. The robata grill is always a good bet, but the sushi is very fresh.

The bathroom is a fun experience, if not a little freaky.
Make reservations, and dress to impress.

We have a great meal at Katsuya the other night. The sushi is top quality. The restaurant can be a little on the loud side on the weekends. Will go back.

Absolutely delicious. I would eat Katsuya ( Encino or Studio City only) for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Always amazing.
