This review is for the Toyota Marin Certified Used Car dealership on Rice Dr. in San Rafael. Sales managers and representatives at this dealership use pressure sales tactics and to talk to customers with no appreciation.
I saw a vehicle on the dealerships website and I took quite a bit of time out of my day to visit the dealership to see the vehicle. Without even giving me a chance to see vehicle a sales representative sat me at a desk and tried to up sell me into a vehicle that cost thousands of dollars more than vehicle I was interested in. I informed sales representative that I was only interested in vehicle that I had seen on their website. Sales representative then asked me how I was going to pay for vehicle? I informed sales representative that I would need to finance vehicle. Sales representative then walked over and talked to a sales manager and came back and asked ??how much do you have for a down payment?? And tried to pressure me into allowing dealership to order my credit report. I told sales representative I have no problem with my credit report being ordered but I first wanted to test drive and visually inspect vehicle to decide if even wanted vehicle. Bulleted below are concerns I had with dealership before I even was given a chance to see vehicle that I was interested in.
?Sales representative tried to up sell me into a vehicle that cost thousands of dollars more
?Sales representative did not ask me one question to learn about what I needed in a vehicle. Showed more interest in how much money I could put down.
?Sales representative tried to pressure me into letting dealership run my credit when we didn??t even know if I wanted vehicle. If I had let them order my credit report it would have negatively affected my credit score.
Sales representative finally gave me an opportunity to see the vehicle. While I inspected under the hood the sales representative walked into the main dealership office. About 5 minutes later an aggressive and rude little sales manager came out to assist the sales representative. The little sales manager did not introduce himself he just through him self into the picture. He was male and looked latin and had long black hair. Below is the communication I had with manager.
Me: (inspecting vehicle)
Sales manager: IS THIS GOING TO WORK FOR YOU OR WHAT!!!
Me: Or what?? Its to early to tell i have only been looking at vehicle for 5 minutes and have not even been given an opportunity to test drive vehicle.
Sales manager: (looks at me with a childish smirk on his face)
Me: (I don??t feel I can trust dealership due to persuasive and aggressive sales tactics that are being used on me.) I am not interested in vehicle. I see some things in it that don??t look right.
Sales manager: Just a few seconds ago you said it was to soon to tell!! The vehicles not perfect. (I was trying to be nice and did not want to tell him that I did no trust him).
Me: I understand its not perfect I did not come here looking for a perfect vehicle.
Sales manager: I didn??t say that you asked for a perfect vehicle!! (he didn??t say that but he implied it by saying ??its not perfect? . You wouldn??t expect a manager to talk so carelessly as he did. The vehicle actually looked okay the real reason I lost interest in vehicle was because I did not trust the little sales manager.)
Me: you shouldn??t talk to customers this way and I ask you not to say anything else to me and to go back into your office because I am not interested in doing business with this dealership.
I know for sure that I wont ever do business with this dealership. I do business with people that I can trust. If you do go to this dealership avoid dealing with the sales manager who I had to deal with it. He is unprofessional and careless and uses aggressive and persuasive sales tactics. Sorry I don??t have a name to give he did not introduce himself or give me a card. I gave a good description of him above.

I don't normally write reviews, however this had to be noted for future patrons interested in buying a car and feeling completely comfortable and trusting of the person giving you the vehicle "info". Lana was our sales rep on my boyfriend and I's 2007 Camry Hybrid. She was absolutely wonderful! Rarely do you find a sales person who doesn't actually "sell" you something, but relates to your situation and tries to work with what works best for you. So friendly and easy going too (we had our dog, and the dealership brought him in to give him treats)! We almost didn't get the Camry b/c it looked as though it had been taken, but she saw how much we wanted it and fought for us to get the car, and we did! She didn't want us to wait long to do paperwork, so she helped the financial supervisor who was busy with other customers, by grabbing some documents to get us started any way. On top of that, she let us hold the car there over night, detailed it for us, and then when we picked up the Camry in the morning- she gave us an auxiliary chord for the car as a gift!!!
Can't say enough good things about the experience, the dealership, and Lana of course!! Highly recommended!

I just bought my first car from Toyota Marin. I was really nervous about it - buying a car is not my area of expertise, and this was a huge financial investment for me. The service I received at Toyota Marin (I worked primarily with Salesman Victor Duru, but also with Jay (the Sales Manager) and Keith (Finance Manager)) was excellent. Victor was patient with my questions (I didn't know S meant "sport" so you can imagine what other ridiculous questions I asked about both the cars and the financing), and he helped me find a car that is perfect for me. I had looked at a few other places, but nowhere did I receive the attentive customer service that I did at Toyota Marin. I have had my car for about five days now, and I love it - it really is the perfect car for me. They've also called me to check in and see if I have any questions or needs, which I appreciate. I would recommend this car dealership to anyone looking for great service and good prices.

I found Toyota Marin through a listing on autotrader.com, I found a vehicle at a price and mileage I literally could not believe. I thought it was too good to be true, but I figured I had nothing to lose by going over and checking it out.

Enter, Victor Duru.

On first meeting Mr. Duru I was greeted with a friendly smile and a handshake, he took me over to the car, answered all my questions, let me inspect the vehicle at my leisure and accompanied me on a test drive. Mr. Duru was my first point of contact in person, with this dealership and I remember thinking to myself.

"If everyone here is as open, honest and just plain cool as Victor. This is going to be alright."

And it was.

My entire experience was pleasant, informative and NO PRESSURE WHATSOEVER. I literally felt like I was dealing with a group a friends that had my best interest in mind. Victor started my experience off on the right foot, and everyone else I met along the way that day lived up to the high standard Mr. Duru set.

After I had pretty much decided on buying the vehicle I came to see, I was asked if I wanted to trade in my current car. I was, but I didn't think I'd get much value out of it so I had left it at home. So, I went back home, picked my old car up and took it back to the dealership to see what they would offer me.

Enter Lana Abukweik

I spoke to Lana on the phone prior to driving up to Toyota Marin initially. She was just like Victor. Friendly, informative, fun and a NO PRESSURE approach. After returning with my trade in vehicle, Victor was helping another customer that had arrived while I went to get my car, so his partner Lana was there to help me with the rest of the process. She talked me through everything I had to do to buy the new vehicle and trade in my old one. She answered every question I had and directed me over to a consultant named Matt Shone.

Mr. Shone is an awesome guy. If you are looking to trade or sell a car, regardless of whether you purchase from Toyota Marin, you want to see Matt Shone. He followed up on some of the questions Ms. Abukweik asked me about my trade in vehicle, and then we went on a test drive so Mr. Shone could get an idea of the running condition of my trade in vehicle. I told Matt about my history with the car, some of my concerns, why I was trading it in etc. At the conclusion of the short drive, I fully expected to be offered very little for the vehicle.

Mr. Shone offered me three times what I thought I would get for that car.

The incredible thing about that, aside from the obvious, is that I spoke openly with Victor and Matt about what I expected for the car. I was looking for a new car for a reason, and after hearing ALL of that, they STILL exceeded my expectation when it came to the trade in value of my old car.

Think about that. They, for all intents and purposes KNEW what I would accept, and what I expected for my old car. And instead of doing what we'd ALL expect a dealership to do, and offer that bare minimum. They offered me what THEY thought was fair. That in itself, it incredible. They didn't give me a great deal because they thought it would seal the deal on the car I was buying, because frankly, the car I bought was NOT going to bring any real profit to that dealership, it was someone elses trade in. It's not like I went in there and purchased a 20,000 car with a huge built in profit or anything like that. They gave me what THEY thought was fair, and what THEY thought was fair was three times what they knew I would accept it for.

If you are looking for integrity and honesty...you WILL NOT find any dealership more qualified to meet that criteria than Toyota Marin.

After I had my trade in value for my old car, I shook Mr. Shone's hand and I followed Lana to the finance department where Cathie Badger helped me complete the deal. Ms. Badger was a pleasure to work with, in what is probably the "least" pleasant part of buying a car (the paying part) she helped make this happen for me. I won't go into details, but Ms. Badger MADE SURE that I left that dealership with that car. She didn't HAVE to do what she did, but she made it happen.

Victor Duru, Lana Abukweik, Matt Shone and Cathie Badger

Those were the people that I met when I bought my car 2 days ago, and I could not have asked for more competent, fair and friendly people. Thank you.

When I was looking over the car I eventually purchased, I mentioned to Victor that I was planning on buying a new Toyota Yaris in a couple of years, and that this was the vehicle I would use in the mean time while I saved up enough money to buy the Yaris outright. At the time I said that, I had no idea WHERE I'd go to buy that Yaris, I just knew it would be "someday." Now I KNOW...when that day comes, and I have enough money to get that NEW car. I'll go back to Toyota Marin in San Rafael, I'll ask for Victor and I'll see what that Yaris is all about.

Take care everyone!

This is the best car dealership I've ever dealt with in over forty years! They are direct, honest, non-pressuring, very friendly, highly knowledgeable, and efficient. Terry Allan, my prime salesperson, was great. He had all those characteristics plus a good sense of humor. Miguel Trujillo, who was my wife's key point person for her Prius purchase a couple of years ago, was also very helpful.

These guys made what is usually a painful process an easy one and I'm now driving a great new 2010 Prius.

As good as it gets in auto sales.

My wife and I decided to visit Toyota of Marin after reading all the positive reviews online. Turns out the entire staff was very friendly and straightforward. They had the exact vehicle we were looking for on the lot and the posted price was close to $3,000 under MSRP, a very good deal. Sure we probably could have spent an entire day working the phone with other dealers trying to see if we could squeeze an even better deal somewhere but we just didn't want to deal with the headache. We appreciated the honesty and simplicity.

Victor Duru made my purchase experience great. He is kind, honest, knowledgable and helpful. I will buy with him again. Toyota of Marin is a low key, friendly, "no haggle" place to buy a car. Great selection too.

We bought a car from Toyota Marin, though we live over 60 miles away in Saratoga, and even have a couple of large Toyota dealers within 5 miles of where we live. The story: my wife was looking for a small yellow-color car, which we discovered was not easy to find. We contacted quite a few dealers, but the typical response was ??we don??t have one available?? . Seeing our request on an auto website, Luis Duran of Toyota Marin contacted us, and was able to locate a yellow Toyota Yaris at another dealership (outside the area). We had been considering another brand (for much less money) but Luis persuaded us to buy the Yaris - a decision helped by the fact that he and his managers went the extra mile of bringing it over to the dealership, even though we had not made a final commitment. That??s what I call great customer focus and service. Luis met our price target, and so we ended up driving the 60+ miles to pick it up. We were extremely happy in in our dealings with Luis and everyone else we met at Toyota Marin (his managers Matt Shone and Miguel Trujillo, and Finance Mgr. Cathie Badger) who made the transaction quick, easy and painless. Based on our total experience, I highly recommend Toyota Marin - no matter where you live!

I bought a used Mazda 3 from Toyota Marin and I found my sales person Victor Duru extremely helpful. I could tell that he was trying to make the whole process as fun as possible. There was a very long wait to see the finance person unfortunately, but Victor waited with me and even offered to drive and pick us up food!

Toyota Marin has been the worst experience I have ever had at a dealer. I found a red 2000 civic and spoke with Paula Londow. I told her beforehand what my credit score was, what my down payment was, and if she can work with me. I was very clear if they dont have the lenders then do not waste my time by me coming down there. I filled out the credit application and came down to check out the car. I arrived and it was in the shop. Understandable, but I got to check it out so I was happy. Paula assured me that she would have it ready by 2pm the next day to test drive. I arrived and waited for her. I went and saw the civic still in the shop.Alone still no Paula. She then sent Luis Duran to tell me it wasnt ready and never came herself. I went ahead and spoke with the only bright spot in the whole dealership a really nice guy named neil..a mechanic...After speaking with him I felt comfortable with purchasing the vehicle. I went ahead and told Paula lets get this thing done. I sent all my papers etc...I told her I would try to make it the next day but it was not for sure and she assured me that she would hold the vehicle. I am now under the impression everything is ready, financed, etc... I arrived wednesday TO PICK UP THE CAR waited for Paula again and again she sent Luis Duran to tell ooo by the way we sold the vehicle would you like one more expensive!!!!!!!I was thinking what is going on here they have my paperwork, never told me anything, never told me it sold, so now I have WASTED a 3rd trip. Understandably, I wrote the general manager upset. They told me they were sorry dont want to be represented this way and will make it right. I unserstand mistakes happen so I give them a chance to make this right. I now make a FOURTH trip to the dealer to speak with the sales manager Sohail Tabar. He appologized told me they were going to get me a newer civic at close to the same price. I was thinking well cool I am glad I kept a cool head and gave it another shot. So Sohail Tabar has me go to the main office to fill out all the paperwork contract stuff DMV stuff etc. Sohail assured me he was going to use his "clout" and Mike the general Managers "clout" to get this thing done. Now, I am excited thinking finally I am getting into a great car. A couple days go by and I hear nothing about whats going on. I call the finance guy and he informs me OOOO we need more paperwork..I was thinking well maybe someone should have called and told me but ok I caught it early. I send it and again nothing. I call and they cant find any finace people. So I wait awhile and call again and speak to the finance guy and he says OOOO by the way we now need 1200 more on a down payment!!!!! wow really???were you planning on informing me of this on my FIFTH TRIP????? ALL THIS AFTER BEING SO CLEAR ABOUT SAYING DO NOT WASTE MY TIME THIS IS WHAT I HAVE DOWN. At this point I am just fed up with them all...BY FAR THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD WITH A DEALER!!!!!!THEY JUST COMPLETELY STUCK IT TO ME IN EVERYWAY POSSIBLE!!!! DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE BY GOING THERE!!!!!!!

This review is in response to Jenni S. on behalf of Toyota Marin:

I would like to explain that what Joel meant was that our sales process is transparent in that the price you see posted is the selling price you pay. We spend a lot of time shopping the internet in order to make sure that we are promoting the lowest price and overall best value on a comparable used car. We value price cars so that the customer knows they are getting a great price right up front without worrying about being the best negotiator. This in turn, saves everyone time, money, and a lot of headache. We apologize if there was any miscommunication and take responsibility for that, but we cannot post prices including tax, title, and license fees because they vary by address. The customer pays sales tax in the city that they live in and that can range between 8-10% depending upon the county and sometimes the city tax. Knowing that we pre-post our best price right up front and do not negotiate off that price, we would have gladly given you an out the door number as the rest of those fees go to the state. We apologize for any miscommunication. If you would like to further discuss this in more detail, please don't hesitate to call or stop in.

Tried to get an OTD price on 3 vehicles as I was going to purchase that same week. Salesman, Joel Weiss emailed me that Toyota Marin Scion was different from all other dealerships, "they broke the mold of selling cars, the price you see is the price you pay. It is a transparent transaction". Well it was NOT, as I was about ready to travel 200 miles to buy I checked one more time with Joel, he then said that the out the door price was the previous price plus tax, lic, and other adding another $2500 to the price he originally gave. The dealership is NO different than any other, the price on vehicle is what it is plus tax, lic, etc. Will not buy there.

Unexpected, great expierence. Treated with respect and honesty. Sale Rep. (Victor Dura) was knowledgeable, patient, and easy to deal with. All contacts I had; Sales Manager, Finance, were also a pleasant surprise.

Have a 2000 Cambry V-6 with 60,000 mi. The starter went bad so took it to Toyota of Marin. Also had them do the 60k check-up. Got the car back and within a day it began to shift itself into reverse whenever forward speed decreased to about 5 mph. Checked all fuses and noticed that the licenses plate light wasn't getting electricity, checked its wires and noticed that three wires going into the truck lid were cut. I Spliced the three wires and the light began working and the spontaneous shifting into reverse stopped. The Check Engine light was still on though, the fault code indicating the EGR flow was excessive and some manufacture/Instruction fault. This fault is keeping me from passing the smog check and hence getting the car registered in California. With some research I've learned that these fault codes, no matter how much reapir and new parts you pay for, will eventually come back once they start.

If you think spontaneous acceleration is bad wait 'til the car starts shifting into reverse by itself.

Easiest car buying experience ever! The service I encountered at this dealership was outstanding! Ritsa and Keith helped me get the car I wanted at the price I wanted to pay. I walked away feeling GREAT about my decision and highly recommend this place over any other dealership in the Bay Area.

Wonderful service from Toyota Marin. Brian Moore, the salesman, was terrific and completed an excellent deal for me in minutes. Got a Prius at well below the prices offered at other dealers in the area. Folks at Toyota Marin were friendly and helpful. Fun doing business with them.

Toyota Marin puts other car dealers to shame.

This business is a class act.

We recently did business with them and it was a class act experience. Especially Tyler. Looking for a salesman that will treat you right and not play any games with you? Tyler is your guy.

I did not want to go through the hassle of the back and forth shopping and dealing and such, so I did my homework online, contacted Toyota Marin and spoke with Tyler.

It was a very pleasant experience and for that Toyota Marin has won over future business when the family is in the market for another car.

Keep it up!

We bought our 2010 Prius from Toyota Marin in Aug 2009. Our experience was very rewarding as we were patiently guided through the steps of decision making and purchase. Our salesman was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We were pleased and willing to travel from the Santa Rosa area to get our car at Toyota Marin. We have also recommended them to others looking for a Toyota.

Toyota of Marin is the most professional dealership I have ever come across in the last 25 years. I have bough two cars from them in the last 2 years and am in the process of buying another car right now. In all instances, they have honored the prices they agreed to over the phone and did better by throwing some free stuff. Sales people are straightforward and come the final numbers pretty quickly thus not wasting anybody's time. Paperwork is quick.

Service department is great in terms of on time services and offering special prices to customers. I also find that the work gets done utmost honesty.

I highly recommend it.

After stringing me along for three days with multiple assurances and a written mutually agreed upon buying price, I dragged my family in there to purchase a new Prius. After two more hours of viewing and talking about the car at the agreed upon price, we stood ready to pay. Then the salesman disappeared to draw up the paperwork and returned to explain that this price was no good - he had to raise the price. To top it off, one of the managers I had been working with started lying to rationalize the sudden price jump. Classic bait-and-switch.

I was considering purchasing a used Toyota from a private party. Toyota Marin agreed to asses the car for me. They kept the car longer than agreed, and when the tests were 'complete' they had only checked minor things like tire pressure & fluid levels. They hadn't done any engine tests! The owner wanted the car back for another potential buyer so I couldn't insist on additional testing by Toyota Marin. I found the approximately $120 fee a total waste and Toyota Marin's assessment a misrepresentation. I later called Toyota Marin & asked one of the mechanics, given the tests done, did he have enough information to recommend his mother purchase the car? He acknowledged he did not know enough about the engine status from tests done and did not know enough to recomend the purchase.

Toyota Marin is the place where I run whenever I am in need of any part or accessory for my Toyota Corolla. Most preferred and reliable as they are, I am happy to treat my car with the best of things available in their dealership. Also, I would like to say here that, I enjoy to be pampered by their pleasing hospitality. Toyota Marin guys are the best. They know how to retain their customers.

This dealership is conveniently located right off the freeway. I use their service department to have the major maintenance services done for my car. The staff there is very friendly and I am usually able to make an appointment the same week. The mechanics do a pretty good job too.
