Jay's is great! Their cups, lids, etc are all compostable! ALL their tea/coffee is FAIR-TRADE! AND they give back to the community not only with being earth-friendly but by supporting local clubs and schools.all veggies, bread are organic! best coffee and sandwich i've had in a long time. service with a smile. when they first opened in the neighbor there were FALSE rumors about them closing down Kleins, which i also used to enjoy. I do say I happen to like Jay's a lot better. An excellent small business. Absolutely recommend and support this little deli. I love sitting and drinking my coffee in their mugs. OH and it is very very very clean!!

Cons: hard to bike to: hills

Pros: poterohill hill needs deli's

Cons: not potrero hill, sort of like suburban blase

This place is clean, inviting and the owners are very friendly. I like the colors and the attention to detail they've shown in their remodel/re-decorating efforts. Each time we've gone in we have always been treated so well, and our food has been consistently quite good! We've been back many times and haven't been disappointed yet, and we've made it a point to try different things each time! The soups we've had are really good, I enjoy the chicken soup especially and try to get it whenever it's on the stove! Fresh and flavorful. The cookies are great!!! In our experiences the breads have ALWAYS been fresh and tasty. Nice people, really good food, friendly service and we'll definitely be supporting this refreshing, FRIENDLY change to the neighborhood! PS, doesn't hurt that the littlest "owner" Jay, is so cute!!! He's definitely their biggest asset! :)

I didn't miss Klein's until I ate at Jay's. The whole layout is awkward with the register at the back, the salad cooler behind you to the right and the menu up and to the left. The kid behind the counter was kind enough to take my order in between whispering into his cell-phone. What's up with that?

Maybe I need glasses, but it was hard to figure out the menu so I gave up and ordered their special sandwich for $7 and change. I was excited to see that they included a 1/2 pickle because I love pickles, but this was just over-brined (if that's a term). Bleh!! I was eying the jars of House Made Pickles for sale in the salad cooler thing, but now that I've had one I'll say *stay away*!!!

Well, the sandwich itself was decent. No order botch up like folks have said. Could have used more meat, but overall OK.

All in all, if I want a sandwich I'll probably go across the street to Dave's or Thinkers. At least at those places I get service with a smile and it feels like they value my business.

Cons: Bad "House Made" Pickles, cashier on cell phone

Jay's is the best new thing that has happened to Potrero Hill in a while. If you want a healthy, yummy sandwich and a great cup of coffee, I would highly recommend Jay's Deli. I was really impressed with the wide variety of sandwiches and salads and then wonderful cookies for after lunch. ALl of the food is organic and home-made. On top of having great food, I learned, after talking with the owner, that Jay's is very involved in the local community. What more could we ask for?

Best turkey panini on cibatta bread! I really like the selection of O water's and the fact this place composts and recycles almost all of their waste is impressive for a food industry. And did I say that the staff and owners are really friendly. They also run a non-profit that helps the Potrero Hill at-risk kids, we need more people like them on this planet.

Thanks for bringing a great hangout and envirnmentally friendly place to the Hill, what a welcome and needed addition. We will support you daily.

This deli is definitely not for those that are looking for a great sandwich. You'll basically get a couple of slices of meat, with a couple slices of lettuce on bread. For the prices, I would expect much better. There are many great deli's in the city, and although they're not exactly in my neighborhood, I'll make the drive instead of coming here. All I can say is...Klein's is sorely missed!

Jays has this amazing heirloom tomato salad and Napa coleslaw to die for. The coleslaw is made with green apples, golden raisins, cabbage and vinaigrette, you must try it!!! The Tuscan white bean soup is great as well as the gazpacho. I bet i will have tried everything on the menu by end of summer.

The place is new and the neighborhood is cheering for it. The employees are friendly and they've got some nice items--tasty chicken salad & tuna salad, fresh ciabatta rolls, thick rich bacon, some creative side salads which I hope they vary from time to time (unlike the mysteriously beloved Klein's).

They've got some kinks to work out. I live down the street and have ordered eight or ten meals from Jay's--the order has been wrong, in one way or other, almost every single time (even when the order was taken by the nice owner). The ingredients are good but sometimes a sandwich seems more lettuce and tomato than substance. The tone of the menu--artisan this, sustainable that--raises expectations that the place doesn't yet seem to be meeting. This is a neighborhood place, and people want satisfying, generous food. The tasteful diet-soda-free beverage case, like the place in general, feels more Upper Fillmore than Potrero Hill. Power to them, though. Despite my prejudice against businesses named after people's toddlers I'll be supporting Jay's as they work through the concept.

It is with much enthusiasm that I get to announce the opening of JAY?S DELI, a new business on Potrero Hill. Its a small, friendly and warm establishment to compliment the diverse people in our neighborhood. On May 24, 2007, there will be a grand-opening with profits donated to the Potrero Hill Schools. I was lucky to be invited to the tasting party a couple weeks ago where i got to taste the food, drink the wine and socialize with the owners and staff, all super nice. I cant wait for it to finally open so i can have my favorite breakfast, a roast beef sandwich on a sourdough roll w/ lettuce and mayo! Check out Jays!!
