At first I thought I was having a problem with reservation and that the price was changing on me, but then after a discussion with the manager they ironed out the problem, honored my reservation and upgraded me.
Thank you Manager Shawn and David, Vanessa! Happy New Years

Do not rent a car from here you will be sorry. They will over charge you and scare you into buying their insurance, 'loss of use' coverage. They put a 250.00 charge on my debit card more than 2 weeks after I returned the car paid in full

RUN AWAY!!! Other places' junk are the cars and customer service reps Payless has!! I paid for "premium" but got a beat up old mid size. After driving to LA from San Diego with our 6 month old baby- we saw the check oil, change tire and brake lights come on- the car wouldn't stop wobbling-I called them- after much hassle they agreed to change cars- next car they sent was better but still not what I paid for. We made do for the rest of our 1 week trip. When I went to return the car the way a customer service rep "tony" was treating the 70 year old couple next to me was appalling and what prompted me to write the review: they were requesting very politely they had a print out for a lower rate than they were getting- tony told them to cancel and go elsewhere!! Wow!! Then he threw a calculator in front of them to "check the math"!!That's how you do business?? Piece of crud place where I will never ever take my business again!!

Don't ever get trapped to their cheap business tricks like I did! They are frauds, they dont have any courtesy towards customers..they just want to cheat you and loot money. Keep away from them or regret later like I did.

Buyer beware! Rental car companies make a lot of their money from selling upgrades and options coverages. There is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is them "slipping in" extra coverages that you verbally declined [or making a mistake they won't admit to] as happened to me. I've rented many cars. I always take the sub-compacts and decline all extra options as I did in San Diego with Payless Car Rental last week. The contract was printed by Jonathan who was at the counter asking the questions and filling out the form. He laid the contract down an drew a number [10?] of
small circles for initials and 1 large circle for a signature. [as all car rental companies do]. I am convinced that Jonathan intentionally overcharged me by adding in the Collision Damage Waiver [I never take this] thinking that I'd miss it [which I did] and that I wouldn't notice it when I brought the car back [I did]. I was upset because I felt I was Ripped Off! The manager there was Mark Knight and the Person who checked me in was Erika. They were professional in hearing my complaints [as was Jonathan-although he hung up the phone on me as our conservation was going in circles] because they knew they HAD ME! I didn't catch the over charge before the car was driven off the lot. My hope is that their future customers think twice about using them and that future consumers take their time when signing anything. Caveat Emptor.

Unethical selling of insurance policy that you don't need. Don't buy policy from them. They would make comment that your policy is not covered in California so that they charge you another 100$ on your rental. The car we had was 40,000

I will tell everyone. Payless rented to me even though I didn't have a credit card. We were stuck at the airport looking for a place to rent a car but all the companies we called wanted a credit card for a deposit. We called Payless car rental and they gave us a compact for a small cash deposit and offered free pickup. Thanks again Payless, you helped us when the others wouldn't. :-)

Worst Experience with car renting ever. San Diego Payless ripped me off, lied and is out of integrity. I am outraged that this company operates the way it does.

Payless charged me more that what I was suppose to pay via Orbitz.

Payless made false claims that I damaged the car and charged me the minimum deductable, $500!!!, as a favor. This story is so grim that I will spare all the details. Bottom line is this place is a scam.

I wish I knew how to properly fight this company....

The car we rented for 1.5 days was supposed to have been $40 or so. Somehow the agent added an additional $26 to the bill before we even saw the piece of junk. The agent claimed the $26 was for additional insurance. I would have had him remove that charge until I saw the car. I could easily have missed something if I had tried to record all of the dings and minor but recordable damage all over the car - Inside and out. Best to have the insurance. The car was recently washed and still dripping wet. What was not wet was water stained. The car was 6/8 full of gas. That's how they wrote it on the contract. I guess that's easier than 12/16 or even 24/32. He said to bring it back 6/8 full. How do you program the fuel pump to shut off at 6/8 full ? I also noticed that the tire low pressure warning light was illuminated. He explained that someone had previously run over a curb with the car and damaged the tire pressure sensor on one of the tires. I asked him how I am to know if any of the tires develop a leak and lose pressure. He said that they had just checked the pressure and tire pressure lights can illuminate for high pressure too - Not only low pressure. I thanked him for teaching me more about tire pressure lights than I once knew and we cancelled the rental. Warning lights are installed for a reason, as are seat belts, headlights, signal lights, etc. Go try and pass a safety inspection with that warning light illuminated. I never rented that car. We walked to Enterprise just down the way and rented form there. They treated us very well.

Booked a Weekly rental for my use at the San Diego Airport location. When I got there, staff was unfriendly and the one who "helped" me was outright condescending (name was Deejay). I was given a Chevy Cobalt. When I switched it on, the "service airbag warning" was lit. The staff told me "thats just a sensor issue" (why dont you give me your car then?) I got a Ford Focus, only when I started driving, I realized the "airbag" sign is always lit. By now, I dint want to go over the whole thing again. Then I realised, unlike other rentals, they dint fill up gas. It was at reserve. I had to immediately get off and gas it up. When I called I was told, "bring it back same way". Whats that supposed to mean (should I drink the gas from tank to make it empty while returning). Incidentally, my business got over in a couple of days and when I returned, I was shown a fine print in the contract (which the staff conveniently left out of my notice when I rented out) that there are no early return credits. They made me pay $160 for 2 days. Even that $160 was $20 more than what my online reservation said. I even offered them to pay a penalty of $25 or so to break the contract. Nope, they had to stick on by the paper with my sign on it. (I have been in similar situation with Enterprise and they have offered to break the contract for $10 or $20 fee depending on location. I went with this payless crooks only because their price sounded good).
On top it, they insisted that I should show an insurance which does not have expired date. I told them its current, I can call up the insurance agent and he will confirm. Nope they want "hard copy" else $15 liability per day.
I even submitted this review at their payless car rental company site and in Google.
Well they got away with stealing $160 from me for a 2 day car rental (economy). Fine, shame on you if you cheat me once. But I am not going to go near them again ever.

First of all: Note that two of the three 5-star "reviews" on here are actually from someone who works there! (And the third is so poorly written, it sounds fake.) Just sayin'...

The customer service is deplorable: Grumpy, argumentative, mumbly, unkempt, unfriendly agent. His pat response to every issue: "That's the way they do it". I don't think he ever once made eye contact with me.

The car was not what we reserved; we got an "upgrade" to a little kia hatchback (instead of a full-sized four door). The agent called it a "mid-size SUV" and kept telling me how huge it was. Side note: on Travelocity, Payless lists a Ford Fusion as a Full-Size SUV, and a Ford Taurus as a Full-Size car. Hmmm.... Bait and Switch at its finest.

On the morning of the return we called to ask for directions and to see how early we should arrive at the lot in order to make our flight (shuttle times, etc.), but the phone just rang and rang for fifteen minutes. When we finally got to the place, the phone rang most of time we were there; the same grumpy agent completely ignored it.

Our estimated total in the email from Payless was $119, but we paid $251. And instead of putting a hold on the credit card for the total, then charging at then end - like every other car rental I've ever experienced in my entire life - they charged the whole thing up front. When we told him we weren't going to pay that much for that little, scary car he told us "Too bad, I already charged your card."

When we got pulled over for the tags being expired, he told us to drive it back and he would give us a car with good tags. "How about you bring us a car with good tags?", we asked. "That's not the way they do it", he said.

We asked for a manager and we told that there wasn't one available, but gave us a phone number of someone to call "tomorrow". Great, we'll call when we're 500 miles away... Thanks.

Many of the cars (including the one they gave me) are "classics". Read as high mileage, old, worn out, etc.
Do not rent from this place.
I always rent a car in SD and in all my frequent travels, it is the ONLY time that I look up who it was that I didn't want to rent from ...and remember that it was Payless that was terrible. Usually, it really doesn't matter and I go for the cheapest, but not in SD. Also, did you notice that the only way that they didn't get a 1-2 star rating was due to the comments left by their own employees!! Yea, they're a stand up business...Riiiiiiiiight!

Tried to rent a car in May. Told them that we would arrive at the airport on a 9:00 flight. They told us to call them and they would come pick us up. We called constantly for 45 minutes with no answer. We finally made contact with them at 9:45. They said they couldn't get us and that they closed at 10. We said we had no way of getting there that fast and that we were told they would pick us up from the airport when we arrived. They said that they closed at 10 and that if we weren't happy we should go somewhere else!
Terrible customer service. Avoid this company at all costs!! Pay the little bit extra to go to a reputable company. We ended up paying over $50 for a taxi and having to go somewhere else the next morning.

DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS CAR RENTAL.

The vehicle I rented was not up to a standard that I expect in a car rental company. Again, the car literally fell apart in the parking lot of my hotel. The blinker did not work. The interior was disgustingly stained. It had definite front end issues. It was impossible to drive over 50 mph without severe vibrations. When you complain they give you Mark Knight's phone number 619-32-6352. No answer. When you email him - it's a computer generated response - I got the exact same message twice.

I had a reservation for Wednesday 10:00 pm. They close at 10:00 pm. My flight got into San Diego at 9:45 pm. I was told that as long as I called them when our flight got it, they would pick us up and take us to the office location to pick up the rental car. All companies that are good will pick you up from the airport! Well....I called for the pick up and was told they were on their way... and they NEVER SHOWED UP! We waited over 40 minutes before deciding to go with HERTZ whos shuttles came to the airport every 5 minutes. I had my wife and two sons (ages 3 & 5) waiting 40 minutes for nothing! HERTZ is a little more in cost but they actually come through. Do NOT use Payless Car Rental! They never even had a follow up call to say...hey, why didn't you check in yesterday...is everything alright. Sorry for not sending the shuttle....Payless Car Rental sucks!!!!!!! They are only getting a rating of 1 star because this website states I have to give a rating in order the post this. They should offer negative stars..

I recently rented a car from Payless and I have to admit the price attracted me there. I get there at 6am and there are 8-10 people there either returning or renting cars and ONE guy at the counter. Not nearly enough help for all the people there. When I get to the counter to rent my car I am told I cannot leave the lot unless I show "Proof of Insurance." Now cmon, I don't carry MY proof of insurance in my wallet and don't know how many other people do. I explain that to the sales rep (Nick) that I don't have that on me and he preceeds to tell me he needs to charge me an EXTRA $13.00 per day for their insurance in order for me to drive the car off the lot. I'm there, need a car, so I pay the EXTRA $13.00 per day for their. I get in my car, a filthy one, start on my trip and low and behold I get pulled over for expired tags on the rental car, not once but TWICE on my trip. By 3pm I call Payless back and tell them my insurance company will fax them MY "Proof of Insurance" to them, they tell me IF I do that I'll have to come back to the office to resign paperwork. Now I'm 300 miles away how am I going to get back there to sign papers?? Bottom line......YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!! I did with customer service and a car that was filthy with EXPIRED TAGS!

Pros: nothing

Cons: Customer service, expired tags, filthy car

.

I got a weekly rental and little did i know it was for 5 days and not seven. The person who checked us out didn't tell us it was due in 5 days, when i asked how much the insurance was he said $9 a day, i said oh, $63 then, he said yes. When we returned the car after one week we were charge for 2 extra days and an 'upgrade' charge for 2 days as well. They ended up charging us $80 more and when i called to complain to the manager about the fact that we paid for a week, they said the 7 day rate is more than the 5 day weekly rate. Yes, i checked their web site, it's about 6-10 dollars more, not 80. They aren't much for customer service.
Go anywhere else but here.

Pros: car was ok

Dear Mark N,
We are deeply embarrassed by your review of Payless here in San Diego. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Roadside Assistance is added to every contract. It's not sneaky, it's there so that if anything happens we will come help you. If it's not on your contract we will not do this, as you have requested to be fully responsible for all aspects of the vehicle by removing the charges (a mere $1.95 per day). 2. This contract shows the gas level at 3/8ths of a tank, just below half. Unfortunately, without pumps on site we cannot fill every car to the Full level. We also waived additional fees when the vehicle was brought back with 2/8ths of a tank instead of 3/8ths. It wasn't that important to us. This information is disclosed on your copy of the contract if the rental agent does not state the gas level, but most people ignore that part of the contract. If anyone comes in to state the gas is not full, it is our policy to state 'let me make those changes for you' even if there are no changes to be made. 3. We are located at a historic San Diego building! We understand that most car rental companies will have a portable on a large lot, but we would rather have an aesthetically pleasing location as well. I would hardly call it a shack, but unfortunately, we have not control over where the city places trash receptacles. 4. All vehicles are non-smoking and inspected. If a car has been smoked in, it must go to detailing due to the allergies of some. We do not and would not rent a vehicle in this condition but if a customer has any doubts, we will exchange the vehicle for them. 5. Also, most people do realize that the courtesy shuttle is not available before or after business hours. We ask that you do make other arrangements and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 6. While we do provide maps at our locations, we do ask that you make other arrangements just in case. A map is not always available, especially during the busy spring and summer months. This is due to high demand, as people often like to have them as souvenirs as well as for navigation purposes. We do have other options for you, as there are many maps available on our various brochures. Or you can rent a GPS unit. Or you can request internet directions to your destination. We are more than happy to help in any of these areas. Thanks for your patience folks!

Sorry folks, this would have been posted as a comment, however we are not allotted enough characters to properly reply.

Unfortunately, I am just getting wind of this review, one year late. However, here at Payless San Diego, our customer image is very important to us and we value all of our online reviews because of this.

Please allow me to explain the procedure for leaving a vehicle at the airport. I mean, actually at the airport, in valet, or curbside, or in the parking lot. The airport authority considers this a liability hazard, which is the reason for the high rates. You really cannot do that. If the airport has any suspicions about the vehicle, they have every reason to dispose of the vehicle as they see fit. After all, how do they know that the vehicle does not have an explosive device attached? Because of the nature of the industry, as tensions are already high, the airports do not just allow a vehicle to stay at the airport.

It is for this reason we do not allow the vehicle to return to the airport. They must be returned to our location. If you are late for your flight, you must turn the vehicle in at parking, but you must either pay for the parking, or we will charge a parking fee and pick-up fee. A pick-up fee will be required even if the parking has been paid.

In the instance of Travelguy123's review, the vehicle was left airport curbside in the valet service. As there was one person at the location and one shuttle driver in at 6am, we were not able to pick-up the vehicle until we were able to notify our roadside crew to pick-up the vehicle two hours later (upon opening). Travelguy123 was charged accordingly, for the airport valet fees and a tow. We were extremely lucky the vehicle was not disposed of. We would have had Travelguy123's insurance handle the matter in that instance.

Other points I would like to make:
-As the rental agent in this instance previously noted, our location was open at 6am and our first shuttle ran through the airport at 6:05, as advertised.
- A tank is filled based upon availability for the day, which means the closest 1/4 tank level. We do not have pumps on locations, so we cannot fill every vehicle to the full level every time, particularly when cars are returned with less gas than they were taken out in. It creates a shortage for the rest of the day.
- Customer service is our number one priority.

Anyway, I hope this review serves helpful to others if/when considering leaving a vehicle at the airport. Please let us know if this explains everyone's questions!

I came to San Diego in January to finish graduate school. I found out early in my stay with another car rental agency that I you can only rent for 30 days at a time. So my saga with Payless began on March 1. I dropped off my first car and called Payless for a shuttle to their location. (I didn't realize they were close to the other company, I would have walked). The rude rep that answered the phone told me to get a ride to the airport and catch the shuttle from there. I was unhappy, but I did. Another company gladly picked me up when I had to switch cars in the beginning of my stay. I get to the hole in the wall they use for an office and they rent me a car that has no gas and takes all my strength to shift gears. After reading other reviews, renting cars on empty seems to be a common practice/scam for them. They act so surprised when they see the car is on E. I returned it later that day to get another car that didn't have working interior lights. When I came to exchange the second car they acted like I was making a big deal over not being able to see anything in the car at night. The third car was fine until today (3 weeks) when it broke down in a Target parking lot. I called the company and was told they would contact their mechanic and the mechanic would then call me in about five minutes. Thirty minutes later, I'm still stranded with no word from anyone. I call again to get a very rude rep (I think it was the same one from the first day) who starts to blame me for the car failure, saying I probably left lights on and I would be charged $250 just for their mechanic to come out and more money if they found the battery had died from me leaving the lights on (Now how exactly would they know that?). He claimed they service all of their cars before renting, but seeing how the first two cars I got with this company were crap, I know that's not true. All I could do to keep from cursing this man was to hang up on him. Luckily I have AAA, who immediately sent someone out to solve the minor problem of the battery cables being loose....another sign the cars are not serviced. I don't know why I thought Payless would be helpful, I should have started with AAA. The few bucks you save on the rental cost are not worth the poor service and irritation you get from Payless. My rental is due back in 4 days, but I'm not leaving town for another 2.5 weeks. My last rental will not be with Payless. There are a couple of very nice, competent people there, but I seem to keep getting the same incompetent rep when I call, which is one too many. I have a feeling this person is the reason for many customer service complaints about this company. If I find out who it is, I will definitely post his name here, and contact his manager and corporate.

RE: Kandace T. Review We appreciate your honest review, however, I would like to make a few corrections. First, we do lease vehicles, so several folks rent longer than 1 month. Gas levels are based upon returning level and the gas we have prepared at the lot. We do not have pumps. We do our best not to charge for minor fluctuations in gas levels. Unfortunately, sometimes the next person gets upset. Also, due to our volume, our shuttle cannot pick-up or drop off anywhere but airport. We will happily send a rep to pick you up elsewhere, based upon availability. My agent probably had a lobby full of guests. If an agent answered the phone, it means our switchboard was full of calls and our admin team was unable to field the volume. About shifting gears: we do not offer manual transmission whatsoever. Interior lights are often turned off by the prior guest. Sometimes its difficult to turn them back on. A break-down occurring several weeks after initial rental means something happened while the vehicle was in your possession. If you decline Roadside Assistant from us we reserve the right to charge you additional fees down the road. Hope this clears things up! Payless Car Rental San Diego Management Team

I rented a car from this company by booking online with Southwest Airlines. I was in San Diego for my son's graduation from bootcamp and my son accidently borrowed my personal car keys to open a package and didn't put my keys back in my purse. We realized on the flight back to Denver that the keys were not in my purse and we left them in the rental car. We called right away and confirmed the keys were found and at the Payless rental store. We were told to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and they would send my keys back. I have made at least 20 calls trying to get my keys back, I spent $10 on a priority envelope for them to be mailed in. Everytime I call trying to find out any information regarding my keys, I am put on hold before they even listen to what I have to say. I have been put on hold for longer than 10 min. at a time before I finally hang up and call again. I would never use this place again and would strongly suggest no one else does either. The staff are horrible, unprofessional punks who don't care. It will cost me $300 to have another set of keys made since they have an electronic chip in them. I have contacted BBB, am going to contact Southwest Airlines, and any troubleshooting agency in San Diego that I can get to listen to me and report this place. I am considering calling the police and reporting my property stolen as well. I am far from done with these people.

Hi Colleen, So Sorry About Your Experience Unfortunately, many items in our lost & found go unclaimed. We appreciate that you took the time and effort to contact us regarding the items you left, however, we are not responsible for any items left in the car. This is stated on your contract. But we will make every effort to return your items to you if they can be located. We are glad that you did send us the pre-paid envelope to return your items, however we would need a note explaining what items you are requesting. Unfortunately, it seems you rented during a peak business period, which would explain why you were unable to get a hold of a live person over the phone. Hopefully everything worked out well for you, and if the items are still in our lost and found, please contact our offices to let us know. We recommend calling between 6am and 8am PST and leaving your name and phone number for us to get back to you.

January 3, 2009:Beware when renting from this company! This was my first and last time using PAYLESS. Here are a few reasons why:1. I booked my car on YAHOO travel where the final YAHOO price has always matched what I was actually charged. Not here! Without telling me, they added a 'roadside assistance fee' that I didn't want or need. 2. They didn't tell me their policy on gas in the car. There was less than 1/4 tank, but they showed it 'full' on their contract they gave me. When I went back and questioned them, they changed it. If I hadn't done that, they would have charged me for a full tank of gas later on. 3. Their car lot is tiny and the office is a shack - when I went to do the 'walk around' to check for existing damage, the car was wedged between another car and some garbage cans, making it impossible to get close enough to the car to inspect for damage.4. The car itelf smelled like an ashtray. 5. If you have an early flight, be aware that PAYLESS doesn't open until 600AM. I had hoped for a 630AM flight, so they told me "just take a taxi" to the airport.6. Hard to believe, but they don't provide maps. They suggested I use a brochure from the rack that had a map in it, but the map was small and useless.

No airport shuttle early in the morning, so I had to walk to Enterprise a half mile away with my luggage. Would have been nice to know when I mentioned I'd be bringing the car back early.

Got the car with less than a quarter tank of gas. Very inconvienant, since I had to return it with a quarter tank. Ends up they got some free gas out of the deal.

I'd say pay a little more and go with anyone but them.

RE: No Early Morning Shuttle We would like to note that it is true that we do not have a morning shuttle running prior to opening hours. However, we do feel that this is a self-explanatory process. If you have any questions however, you can always contact your rental agent. <br> We do apologize for the inconvenience of walking to use the Enterprise shuttle, however they are only one block away and often pick up our guests before and after hours. <br> While we agree this is not the most convenient method, we unfortunately are not equipped with the resources to open any longer than 6am to10pm on any given day. However, we do try to accommodate by opening every day during these hours, even holidays. <br> Payless Car Rental San Diego Management Team

There are plenty of other car rental places in San Diego worth considering. Had a terrible experience with Payless, they overcharged me on the number of days i wanted then refused to a)refund the unused days or b) let me keep the car FOR THE NUMBER OF DAYS I PAID FOR. One of the reps told me once i brought the car on the lot I could not leave with it even though I paid.

Drive a half mile down the road to rent - not worth the trouble

Note this review is for the Payless Car Rental on 3345 Kettner. The only Payless location in San Diego. We rented during the weekend of 5/19/08 . They delivered as promised. However, a couple of items you should be aware of. 1) You may find the service slow. Unlike the big national car rental chains that run shuttles to their lots every few minutes, this operation is running only one shuttle. Therefore, you will need to patient. We had to wait approx. 20 - 30 minutes coming and going. Additionally, the office was understaffed. Meaning that you had to wait in line for service. Becasue they are small operation they are having staff focused on too many responsibilities to run a smooth operation
2) Make sure you understand when they ask about Extended and "Basic" Insurance. When most people hear "basic" insurance they are thinking the inusrance that your personal auto insurance or credit card provide. If you say "basic" they are going to tack an additional charge on your bill. Make sure you understand what insurance coverage you have before showing up. Staff was very hard working, pleasant and helpful.

RE: Points made by Phoenix Hi Phoenix! Thanks for your review. As it seems highly likely you plan to use us again we would like to offer you a coupon for a free upgrade next time you are in town. Please see your email for further details. Also: - We do operate more than one shuttle, however, we function on personalized service, so we do ask that you call us from the baggage claim at your terminal to tell us which airline you arrived in on and when we should come pick you up. You may also let us know if you have any transportation needs at that time. - If we have any inconvenient waits, we do apologize, but it is do to the fact that we run a very large operation. Please be patient and we will accommodate in every way possible. - We do ask that you please review your bill before you sign it, that way you can catch any additional fees at that time. We want your rental agent to explain all aspects of your bill before you leave so that you may leave satisfied. Payless Car Rental San Diego Management Team

Our location here at Payless San Diego is extremely consistent when it comes to delivering our customers to the airport Corey, we have a close to flawless early open record. I am personally familiar with this case, for I was the one that dealt with it first hand, and spoke with you on the phone numerous times. Out of the 2000 rentals I have per month, 200 of them arrive before 6:00AM pst, ( the time we open ), not one in the past 300 days ( since this location opened ) has ever been informed to leave it at the San Diego airport terminal Valet. To state that you called the location multiple times and had no answer until 6:15 is a complete fabrication, only because I remember answering your call once at 6:00AM sharp, which is also confessed by you in your e-mail sent to corp. A review should be honest, the first time I heard of your situation ( 6:00AM ) you told me that your flight was leaving in 10 minutes, after telling me that my company must retrieve the car, pay for the valet, and pay for the gas, I reminded you that your flight was supposed to leave in 1 minute. ( We found out later that it didnt leave until 6:40AM ).

Its unfortunate yes, that you were charged a fee for leaving a rental in a public parking lot, but dont post false, negative, and fabricated, reviews about your experience, when in fact, you were being negligent.

Pros: Personal, Timely, Efficient Customer Service

Cons: Not like Robotic 1000+ Car plus Agencies

.

Worst experience I have ever had with a car rental company. Had an early morning flight (6:40 AM...the place was not open when I tried to drop off the car and no shuttle available. (About two miles from the airport) Corporate customer service told me to park it at the airport and call the office when they opened...at 6:00AM. No answer until 6:15 Company charged me an additional $180.00 to get the car from the airport saying I should have known to make my own arrangements for transportation to the airport in the morning. (Honestly, has ANYONE ever had to do this??) The Manager at this particular Payless flately refused to help or consider any options.
All I can say is to simply avoid these guys...they WILL take your money.

Business Response:

RE: Corey T -False Information- Please allow Payless to explain the procedure for leaving a vehicle at the airport. The airport authority considers this a liability hazard. They have every reason to dispose of it as they see fit. We do not allow vehicles return at the airport for this reason. They must be returned to our location. In Coreyβ??s case, the vehicle was left airport curbside. Corey was charged accordingly. We were extremely lucky the vehicle was not disposed of. We would have had Corey's insurance handle the matter in that instance. Further notes: -As previously noted, our location was open at 6am and our first shuttle ran through the airport at 6:05, as advertised. - A tank is filled based upon availability, which means the closest 1/4 tank level. We do not have pumps on location, so we cannot fill every vehicle to the full level every time, particularly when cars are returned with less gas than they were taken out in. It creates a shortage for the rest of the day. - Customer service is our number one priority. Hope this serves helpful to others! Payless Car Rental San Diego Management Team
