I booked my service at Recess as a first-time client during Spa Week, where they were offering an $85 pedicure for only $50. The place looked nice, so I decided to check it out.
I've had $15 pedicures that lasted longer. The receptionist was kind at first and eventually offered me a drink. The service was supposed to last an hour and 15 minutes. Including the wait time, I was in and out in about 50 minutes. My pedicurist was friendly and introduced herself. The website makes a big deal out of being able to choose your own custom lotion scent, but I was never asked and it was chosen for me.
At the end of my service, I asked if I could use the credit card I had on file (they require one to reserve your spot) to pay for my service. They said no (I didn't have it with me.) I paid in cash, and when I asked for change back in smaller bills for the tip, I was told they didn't have any. I ended up leaving a smaller tip since they wouldn't accomodate my request.
The very next afternoon, the polish began to chip off, and within a week, my toes looked as if I had never even had a pedicure. $50 is a lot for a poor job done, had I paid the original $85 I would have been livid.
I do not recommend this place to anyone, unless you'd like to flush your money away and have nothing to show for it less than a week later. I will never return.

Pros: Free Beverages, Valet Comped on Weekends

Cons: Poor service, rude receptionist, low quality

I went here one afternoon to get the Signature manicure and pedicure, and overall it was a great experience. If you don??t like making decisions, this might not be the place for you since you can customize practically everything. Before your service begins, they escort you to a ??bar? at the center with an assortment of all kinds of lotions and bath salts from which you can mix and match. Once you??ve done this, you can sit back and relax. There are TVs to watch or you can just admire the beautifully designed space. On the day that I went there was no one else there which was kind of sad, but this would be a great spot for an event like a bachelorette or birthday party. The staff was extremely friendly and everything seemed very clean. The only drawback was that it was pricey, but if you don??t mind shelling out the buck then this would be a fabulous place to become a regular at.

I came here and saw Gabby, who is great! Everyone here is really friendly and its a great atmosphere. My mani and pedi lasted almost 2 weeks no chipping or anything! Gabby did a really thorough job and my nails and toes looked like perfection!

Definately NOT worth the money! If you are purposely trying to separate yourself from your money, this place is terrific! I've had much better pedicures elsewhere. However, there are several other fabulous shops with terrfic environments and operators that leave you feeling it was well deserved!

The salon was empty, but they had no time to offer explanations(or a drink on a hot afternoon--I saw the cucumber water later). Marina(she didn't introduce herself or ask my name) put the second coat on as she finished the first. the polish started to come off the next day & was half off most nails by the 3rd. She did ask if I wanted my cuticles cut. I said no but she did anyway. Now they loook jagged 7 ragged. I asked if she had any sugestions for a split nail & she said no but promised to ask someone because they might have a product for sale which she couldn't use!!!! I asked if I could try it first. She didn't follow up on this-when done she just left. Yes I did tip her but not from the heart. Afterwards I found out there was a first time special which neither the owner or receptionist had mentioned to me.

Cons: No info offerred, no info when asked, rushed job

I have been looking for a new manipedi place for months since the place I used to got to crashed&burned. I found it at Recess. The place is beautiful, relaxing and their choice of creams, rubs and lotions is a nice touch. The "green" aspect is welcome, as are the muted tones and low lights. The seats/sofas are v comfy - so comfy I fell into a deep sleep. In short - if you don't mind spending $50 on a pedicure, this is the place.

Hooray! Finally, a nail salon that I WANT to stay at, that invites deep breathing and relaxation (isn't that part of the point of pampering?), and that I can feel good about going to. Not only that, but a week after my mani/pedi, and the polish is still on. A pregnant friend and I went to recess last week and had a great experience. We left feeling happy and pampered.

Pluses:
1. Friendly and professional -- they did a great job of filing, cleaning up the cuticles and nails, polishing and massaging. And they were on time for our appointments.
2. Great variety of non-toxic, organic products that work and don't make you feel sick.
3. Immaculate, welcoming, spacious environment.
4. Everything is sanitary (hey, those jet tubs aren't!)
5. Choice of scents for lotion (not that cheap pink stuff) and soaking fizz
6. You can hang out for a long time and feel welcomed, not rushed!
7. The cucumber water is yummy
8. You leave with a goodie bag (files, buffers, cuticle stick ...)

Minuses:

1. It's not cheap (although we took advantage of the $50 mani/pedi intro)

We had a brief conversation with the owner at the end as we paid up, and she was lovely ... My friend and I liked her and her salon, and agreed that we'll be back!

It was my fifth visit to Recess this week, and I must say the experience gets better and better. I love the salon and its ambience. It is so relaxing to go in and get a mani/pedi. Like a jewel it sparkles... But it is 100% eco friendly. I was delightfully educated about the GREEN construction and all the time and energy that went in to make sure this place was 100% GREEN. I am so proud that a business has taken this much time to be so EARTH concious.

The soaks and lotions are unbelievable. They leave you feeling embraced by nature. I chose the Bloominesque cocktail for my mani/pedi and it is a sure winner. I felt like a rose walking out of there. Who knew doing something for yourself could be so great for the environment too!

Cons: PLEASE open one in OC!

I went to Recess with my friends for the first time yesterday after reading about it on Daily Candy. Let me say .... WOW! I really don't know how this place could get anything less than 5 STARS!! This is the best place!

The Owner was so friendly and nice, as well as completely aware of what a green spa should be. The employees DO KNOW A LOT about being GREEN, PLUS they are close to being LEED CERTIFIED!!! The lotions and soaks smell like a bit of heaven in a bottle. Love it!

I was so grateful the owner spoke to us. I too own my own business and know what it takes to run a successful store.... You work endless from dawn to dusk! Thank you RECESS for not only giving me a relaxing and wonderful pedicure, but educating me about the green movement. GO RECESS!

Cons: More locations needed!

I went to this establishment yesterday with my girlfriends, and have to say it was awesome. Exquisitely designed. Friendly, approachable, and inviting staff. I even met the owner! What a treat! Such an inspiring individual who has fully embraced the green movement. This place was endorsed by LIVE EARTH... and is close to being LEED certified. Very impressive. Anyone who wants a green salon, look no further. I highly recommend this place.

I read about this place from Daily candy and decided to stop by to check it out and it was not a pleasant experiance!!! I've read one of review previously and she mentioned that employee was not educated and I agree with that comment 200%!!!
It is great to go green but I just felt like emplyees were not professional enough to explain whole concept of this salon....
Also sofa was very uncomfortable,too!!!

GREEN REVOLUTION! I absolutely love this place. Not only does it have an amazing amiance, but it is 100% green. The floors are gorgeous. I have never seen a floor like it. Its like walking on a jewel. At other nail salons, Nail polish is basically Dibutyl phthalate in a bottle - attributed to adverse health effects like developmental abnormalities and defects as well as cancer. The staff is so nice and professional. I love the services and the price. They have ton's of products with essential oils in BPA free bottles!! YEAH!! BRAVO RECESS!!

I swear once you go to this nail salon, you will NEVER go back to another. It not only have competitive prices, but its 100% safe. The lengths the staff and management go to make sure everything is sanitary and earth friendly is inspiring. I wish every business would take the initiative to go green like Recess. The staff is so friendly. You have everything included... the soaks and a lotion. When were you asked what scent you wanted on your feet at a nail salon??

A++ - Love it.

I recently went to recess and was very impressed. The space itself is beautiful and does not smell like a typical nail salon. They have a large selection of Zoya nail polishes which are free of most harmful toxins and the recess organic soak, oil and lotion line is amazing. They have many different scents and you can customize which products are going to be used during your service. My favorite scent was the berry fusion, which I used for my service, and after leaving the salon I had several people ask what I was wearing as they liked the smell too. The place is very clean. They use pedicure basin liners, and new files and buffers for every service. The towels used are made from bamboo and are super soft and they also have an autoclave. The manicurist I had was good and professional and the owner was very nice and knowledgeable, especially about the green construction of the space. They are going for LEED certification. All and all it was a very pleasant experience and I will be going back.

I went in to recess, compelled to go in for a "green" manicure. To my dismay, almost half of the products used on me were the exact same toxic things used at all the other salons, only they are charging double at recess. And the manicurist seemed to be unaware of the green concept of the salons and knew little about the products. Save your money and wait for the real thing.
