Before Christmas -

12/21- They broke a hole in my main sewer line to clear a clog, then covered the pipe with dirt and left. Let me explain. This is an unbelievable experience. Today, 12/21, we called Jim's because water was backing up in the house. I assumed that it was in the main line in the front yard, because we had Jim's out about a year ago for the same issue. Two guys arrived and searched for the main line. I told them exactly where it was found the last time when someone came last year (same company). I asked if they had the electronic equipment to locate the pipe. They did not. Finally, they dug deeper in the area and we all saw water seeping into the hole they had been digging. They found the main pipe with the shovel tap (metal on metal) but it was about 8 inches below the water. They stopped. They did not feel the pipe or try to see where the leak was. They said that "I would have to pay $350 to have a "Clean-out" placed into the line in the backyard". I will note here that there is a visible clean out in the crawlspace that has easy access, but they failed to even look for. I will also note that in the past, Jim's has accessed the main line by removing the toilet (easy job to do). They said "After the clean-out was installed, the clog could be removed, and then they would repair my damaged pipe". MY DAMAGED PIPE. They left, and I still had the clog. So I decide to investigate myself. I got a bucket and cleared and dug until I was able to see the pipe clearly. What I found was a large hole in the top of my iron pipe. Then I understood. When Jim's guy came out last year, they dug up to the pipe, broke it open, cleaned out the clog, filled the hole with dirt, and left. I paid for this of course. So now, they leave me with a clog (today), and were going to expect me to pay to fix their damage.

I get them to return, then tell them what I found and explain that they broke the pipe last time. They tell me "Oh, that is common practice. It is done all of the time". Well, if that were true, then why did they not assume that this was the case earlier and investigate, find the hole and complete the clean out? Why just leave, telling me that it is a cracked pipe?

So they proceed to run the "snake" into the main line, only to get it stuck, and have to call the owner of the company. Jim arrives and after quite some time trying to remove the equipment, he cuts the cable and leaves, promising to return to remove the cable from my pipe. He did not return, nor did he call.

12/28- Finally reach Jim on the phone after leaving over a dozen messages on his "emergency" number. He promises to come out that day. He never arrives, never calls, or returns calls 12/28, 12/29, or 12/30

12/31 - After promising to come days ago to remove the "snake" equipments that he got stuck in the main line, and unclog the obstruction, he has not shown, or returned the numerous calls that I have made. Oh, but I did promptly receive a bill.

1/2 - Finally got him on the phone and after berating him for his conduct, he hung up on me. I called back and continued, in a professional manner, to explain that I had filed against his bond to collect compensation for his failure to DO ANYTHING about the situation which he was responsible. I tried to get him to make an offer to settle the situation and he promised to come over the next day to discuss. Of course he has never shown. I will note that last week he DID come by the house when I was gone and stole the snake, which I had removed MYSELF, from my yard. I am assuming that he thought it wise to take what evidence I had against him.

This has been a very disappointing experience.

Jim Rutledge, the owner of Jim's Pasadena Plumbing, responded to a call to clear out a clog. The clog was not cleared. He had equipment problems. He abandoned the job and after many calls, never returned, even after promising to do so. He sent a bill for $86, and after I complained that he did not even do the job, he sent me another bill for over $400. He has no email address to write to and his office is in a building that shows a printing company as the storefront. I have called and spoken to Anita as well as Mary in the office, and was told that he would call to discuss. He has not called. He use to be a good plumber, but I will never have him do work for us again.

This is a WARNING - BEWARE !!!!!
