If you?ve never golfed in the Colorado mountains at 8,600 feet and prefer the heat, humidity and flat courses of some other states I could mention, then you?re either nuts, or haven?t broadened your horizons enough to take on one of the best golfing experiences available. Pole Creek Golf Course, near Winter Park in Colorado, is one such course that will definitely get your heart pounding, and not only because of the altitude.

This course is the summer jewel of the Winter Park and Fraser Valley, an area known better for the world-class skiing at Winter Park Resort just 11 miles east. When the snow finally melts, and the course opens ? usually mid-May ? nature reveals a true masterpiece crafted expertly into the land, rather than as a result of major excavation or earth-moving.

Now touting 27 holes following the addition of a new nine in 1999, Pole Creek offers a great test of your golfing ability, whichever combination of the three nines you choose. The course is kept in great shape once it has overcome the rigors of winter. With the river running through the course, water comes into play on ten of the eighteen holes comprising the Meadow and the Ranch nines, and on three of the Ridge nine. If you haven?t got water to contend with, tight tree-lined fairways or deep bunkers guarding undulating greens might get you. And while talking less club to compensate for the altitude is the thing to do, reverse that thinking when the wind gets up and you?re playing into it.

Overall, the fantastic views of the Continental Divide and sheer downright pleasure of playing this mountain course is worth the (little) effort of getting there. From Denver, it?s less than a 2-hour drive over Berthoud Pass, and at $89.00 (including cart) for high season weekend rates, it?s one of the best deals for a resort course there is.

Pros: Scenery, challenge, unspoiled, enjoyable.

Cons: Tee off late on a Saturday, round can be long. otherwise, none.
