5 Stars: Great BBQ all around (by fattboy)

You will love this place. Ignore the bad reviews and remember there is quite a bit of local BBQ competition in the area and they like to sabotage on here.

The wings are the best in town and Hoss is a really nice guy, not actually a lunatic.

I have had some really great meals here. The fried chicken can be phenomenal and really great ribs too.
A fun atmosphere and space and the best Guinness in town! Check it out!

1 Stars: The Owner is a lunatic! (by MPWenger)

The food is not bad, the service is terrible, and the owner is crazy. He'll serve bad food and then tell the customer to eat it anyway because he is always right. He screams at his staff all the time and he has no problem yelling at his customers. If the place was good he would be an eccentric,ut the place is far from good.

1 Stars: Not Good at all (by elightfritz)

Bar B Q was raw! Ok beans over priced and nothing nice. Will never go back. If you like this place you have never had real good BBQ. What ever you do dont get the chesse corn, thought it might be good......one of the worst things I've ever put in my mouth.

5 Stars: Best BBQ in Denver!! (by Hinde)

A true gem of a restaurant in the lovely Highlands neighborhood. Big Hoss offers a fun and lively atmosphere whether you are in the mood for lunch or a great dinner. I moved here from PA about a year and a half ago and though I loved Denver I longed for the great restaurants back east, that is until I ate at Big Hoss. The ribs are the best I have ever had! There is nothing better than having a pint of Guinness and a plate of ribs or fried chicken or pulled pork (you can't go wrong!) and don't forget the yummy cheesey corn and biscuits with mashed potatoes and gravy.....mmmm, mmmm good! Hoss has really put his heart and soul in the restaurant and it comes through in the amazing food, good service and great atmosphere. Do yourself a favor and check it out, you are in for a treat!

5 Stars: Great Neighborhood Bar with Excellent Food and Drink Specials (by FoodLover1508)

I recently discovered this restaurant when walking by one early evening. The bar seemed crowded and there were multiple tv's showing all the NFL games I wanted to watch. The wings were the best I ever had and I know bird. Had some barbecue shrimp too and it was awesome. Went back the next day and had a cheap shot and a beer. Quite fun with the half chicken. Gonna keep trying it cause it was fun.

5 Stars: Best Barbecue (by littlejunior)

Just went there after watching football on Sunday. The barbecue is the best in the city and the beer was cold. Was there on a weeknight and had pork and ribs. The sauce was dynamite as well as the meat and the place had a good groove. I think Jason Sheehan from the Westword got it right. It is one of the best places in town. Waitstaff is cute too.

5 Stars: New Found Love for BBQ (by dinningdebbie)

Last week my fiance talked me into eating bbq which is his favorite, but I've never really liked it. He took me to Big Hoss Grill and Steakhouse. I was very thrilled about the wide variety of menu options and fabulous prices. We ordered the BBQ Shrimp and the flavor was to die for. This is our new favorite restaurant! Until now I had never found a bbq sauce that I enjoyed, but the Hoss sauce is amazing. The atmosphere was so welcoming that I can't wait to go back and see the smiling faces of the friendly staff, and of course explore the menu further!!!

5 Stars: Always impressed!! (by Yellzd)

Big Hoss takes the cake for great food at even better prices! We drop in for both lunch and dinner at least a couple times a month. Everyday they have great specials, sometimes for as low as $7.00 a plate. The owner Hoss is often there and always checks in with the tables which makes us feel right at home every time. The wings are the best in the city and their pulled pork plate is to die for. The location is great and so is the atmosphere. With cozy booths, bright patio seating and a large bar, everyone has a place to sit. Big Hoss is a great find and we would highly recommend it to everyone!!!!

1 Stars: Horrible BBQ and even worse Service!- This place sux! (by jwilhelm3)

The BBQ here is absolutely the worst. I can't believe that people actually go here to get food. The service is terrible- the servers and bartenders are slow, rude, and unintelligent.

If you want really good BBQ go around the corner to Brickyard on 38th at Stuart. Now that is really good BBQ. Or go to the Tennessee BBQ joint on Harlan Between 44th and I-70. Those boys know how to smoke some ribs, brisket, chicken, sausuage..... mmmmmmm good stuff.

Here's to Big Hoss makin' Denver worst BBQ. Even Bennett's up off Wadsworth and 52nd is better than this place.

1 Stars: The worst dining experience we've ever had. (Part 2) (by brendon7)

I wanted to leave at this point as I had someplace i needed to be and thought this is too much effort to go through for a steak dinner. My girl said lets stay. The cook took the raw meat away and about 15 minutes later came back with two new steaks. These were still not medium or medium rare but at this point we were hungry and afraid to send the food back again. After eating the waitress came by put the check down and walked away. I was amazed to see that the check had not been adjusted even slightly for the ordeal with the meat. I called the waitress and asked her if there was anything she could do considering the ordeal we went through. She took the bill and said ?I will see what I can do", after several minutes she came back and set the bill down and left without saying a word. I looked at the bill and it was unchanged. Keep in mind I had not asked for the meal to be taken off the tab, just maybe a glass of the wine taken off or something to compensate for a very unfavorable dinning experience. I called her back and asked if i could talk to the owner, she left and after several more minutes a woman named Sherry who said she was the manager came back and we explained the situation. Sherry then took the bill and said let me see what I can do after almost 10 minutes she came to our table set the check down and left. The check was unchanged. I was frustrated so asked my girl to talk to the manager after a couple minutes she came back visibly upset. I asked what happened and she said the manager was very rude to her but had said again "I'll see what I can do". Sherry then came back to our table set the check down, I looked at it and it was the same, she then said "well you ate the meal and your taking a to go box home so it must not have been that bad". We were taking the box to our dog. (Continued Below)

1 Stars: Very Disappointing (by misschambord)

We were really looking forward to trying a new barbecue restaurant in Denver. We live near M and D's, which is one of the best in town, and are always looking for other barbecue places to compare. We decided to try Big Hoss after reading the editorial reviews. We know good barbecue and this is not it. The brisket was undercooked. The Saint Louis style ribs were so so. The only good things on two dinner plates were the bison back ribs and the beans. Nice atmosphere - not worth the trip.

3 Stars: Friendly staff, good taste but... (by doug80211)

I have eaten at Big Hoss a few times and each time try the Carolina BBQ sauce and had to write. I moved here from Eastern NC and have worked at BBQ restaurants in NC and even have my own Eastern NC BBQ sauce that I make up. Anyway, anyone thinking they are experiencing Carolina flavor at Big Hoss are surely missing the boat! The sauce was some watered down vinegar and garlic cloves with what looked like a tiny bit of cayenne pepper... FAR from Carolina style! Carolinians take pride in their sauces and Hoss should do some research on the sauces from the Carolinas!
Basic Eastern NC sauce is: (the absolute BASIC)
Apple cider vinegar
Crushed red pepper
black pepper

There are some delicious ones that include more... If Hoss writes me, I will hook him up.

The pork was delicious and moist, his red sauce was quite good and flavorful and the beans are quite tastey as well.

We'll go back, but just for the red sauce.

2 Stars: Mediocre at Best (by ellenjack)

After reading about this place, we decided to give it a try late Friday. First let's say we probably stood for 5 mins at the wait to be seated sign, without anyone even acknowledging we were there. The bartender looked up but didn't bother to say a word and there were only a couple of patrons at the bar, so she wasn't busy. After finally being seated, we did receive our drinks promptly, but it took at least 10 mins for the server to take our order and the place wasn't that busy. I ordered the pulled pork plate and had them add 2 buck a bones so I could give them a try and my sides were baked beans and slaw. My husband ordered the 2 meat plate and ordered sausage and pork with a bone and his sides were the cheesy corn and slaw. First, all I can say that those who say this is the BEST BBQ they have ever eaten, must have eaten some really bad bbq to this this is the best. I will say the pork was good, but nothing spectacular and it was lukewarm to beat. The ribs were tough and lukewarm as well. The slaw was so dry, we wondered if they had forgot to add some dressing. The cheesy corn tasted like it had the powdered cheese on it that comes in box mac & cheese. This will be our first and last visit to this place. It was mediocre at best. IF you want some good BBQ, try the little hole on the wall at 4243 W. 38th Ave. called Brickyard BBQ. Some of the best you will eat, not fancy, but GREAT BBQ.

2 Stars: Unbelievably bad service (by clkwrk)

My wife and I stopped in to BigHoss a few days ago with a friend after doing an internet search for good local bar-b-q. Our experience was decidedly below average. To start out it took our waiter 8-10 min to even take our drink order. We ordered the fried pickles (pretty damn good) and the cheese nips.

All of our entrees were above average, with my wife calling the ribs "maybe the best I have ever tasted". But again the service just brought the whole experience down. One server continually walked past our table with its assortment of empty glasses without offering refills. I know we were not in her "section" but she failed to let our waiter know of our need of service.

Now to the meat of my problem with BigHoss' establishment (pun intended). We decided to go back today to give it another shot. We are both in the service industry and understand that sometimes you are not on top of your game. We went in around 5pm and found the place surprisingly slow. Only about 7 people at the bar and 10 people around the rest of the restaurant. There were 2 people working behind the bar, and one waitress to handle the dining room. It took 5 minutes for the guy behind the bar to acknowledge us, and even then did not come over to take our drink order. The woman behind the bar then came over and asked what we would like. After telling her what we would like she walked away and never brought our drinks. We had to flag the guy down after another 5 min and explain.

Finally we got our drinks and proceed to wait to place our food order. We ordered the fried pickles (again) and the woman set out place settings. 10 more minutes went by before she came to refill our drinks. She looked at our place settings and said, and I quote "I am going to have to bite the bullet on this one, I see plates in front of you but can't for the life of me remember what you ordered"!

Needless to say we left without eating. Brothers BBQ got our $. BigHoss=BigLoss

5 Stars: Good BBQ in a town where good BBQ is hard to find (by kcmule)

I think the scathingly negative reviews here are way over the top. I have been to Big Hoss several times, and being a big BBQ fan, I have also tried most of the other BBQ joints in the metro area. Let me just say that Hoss is far and away the best in town. I lived in KC so I know what I'm talking about! No, they are not perfect - but no BBQ in Colorado is. I have had excellent and so-so brisket at Hoss, unfortunately it varies by day. But the pulled pork has been outstanding every time, same for the chicken including some truly fabulous chicken wings. Watch for all u can eat specials to get a real value. And how can anyone complain about those sides? The mashed potatoes, baked beans, and (my favorite) the cheesy corn make my mouth water just thinking about them. The Hoss Sauce is good, but not as good as Gates or Smokestack from KC - this is often the case when one tries to 'merge' all the great BBQ styles into one sauce (read the label). But overall, I find Hoss to be an exceptional BBQ joint in a market where good BBQ is few and far between. Compare Hoss to Denver's 'star' Brothers BBQ (winners of many 'best of' awards) and you will see why Hoss is head-and-pork-shoulder above the rest.

1 Stars: small portions/big prices (by RIVER4574)

Portions are terribly small and prices are too high for what you get. I have been to some of the best BBq joints in Texas and other states that are renowned for their meat and I was looking forward to having that quality in my backyard. I live in this neighborhood and I won't recommend it to any friends and I'm a big supporter of local eateries. I ordered a two meat plate for carry out and I got two slices of "brisket" that were over 3/4 pure fat and three small cut pcs. of sausage for $16.00 and change. When I got back to my house and opened the to go box I immediately felt robbed and taken advantage of. The two slabs of fat were barely edible. I never write these reveiws and like to give places a second chance..but...after I called the female manager and expressed my disappointment all she could do is sit there on the phone and really give a $#%. She offered nothing in compensation. News flash to small business and restaurant owners (which I love to support).....this is not the way to get repeat customers. Word of mouth goes a long way.

2 Stars: The Hype, the Help, and Decent Ribs (by kmichelleo)

So 8250 wrote a glowing article about Big Hoss and so my boyfriend and I were excited to give it a go. We just got back from an early evening dinner and while it's fresh on my mind and stomach, I thought I would add to the reviews already here. Let me start by saying the food was okay. Yeah, just okay. The sides were just off--my roll was microwave-hard, my grilled vegis were loaded with fat and little else, the potato and rice were equally dull. For the main course we had a mix of brisket and chicken as well as the rib mixer. The bison ribs were awful! Tough, to\ugh, tough. Flavor was good, but the meat was so terrible, I couldn't finish more than a couple bites. The brisket was fatty and didn't have the expected smoke ring of a well done brisket. The chicken and pork ribs were delicious--great flavor and really tender. Definitely made up for an otherwise mediocre meal.

So will I go back for another try? The question was easily answered by our terrible wait staff. She was neither helpful, cheerful, or knowledgable. Despite getting there well before the dinner rush, she forgot basics like my requested water, had no answers to simple questions like "what do you recommend" and gave us no "thanks" or "come again" when she tossed our bill on the table and walked away. For a place being lauded as one of the best new restaurants in Denver, they should consider teaching their wait staff how to provide good service.

So next time I'm craving good ribs, I'll order just that--for take out thank you!

1 Stars: are you kidding?! (by psayhey)

"I never know when I'm going to step in a pile of scat," says Michael Peinovich, a Web developer whose Brooklyn, New York, building houses the feline in question. "Everybody complains, but the landlords won't get involved."

As neighborly nuisances go, the kitty seems quaint compared with Catzie Vilayphonh's Philadelphia story.how sad.

don't waste your money on this place; they don't deserve your business.

5 Stars: Absolutely best BBQ in Colorado! (by whetzell)

Your search is over!

I moved up here from South Carolina about 10 years ago and I have been searching high and low for great bbq in Colorado. I have tried all of the so called top ten bbq joints around the area and I have to say with out a doubt that Big Hoss makes the best BBQ in the state by far. I was actually excited when I saw the ribs for the first time because I knew they were done right.

If you are a BBQ fanatic than you will love and appreciate the work that goes into this food. Say hi to Big Hoss he is a great guy, it is really obvious which one is Haus :-)

5 Stars: Best Barbeque in Denver and the hamburgers are to die for (by tuckmeister)

This is a new barbeque restaurant in NW Denver. The food is great and the staff is friendly, Lots of fun and the food is fantastic. Sports on in every corner of the bar so if you want to watch the games that's the place to go. It's about time we get good barbeque in Denver. Even has a good kids menu. Lots of meat; pork, beef, buffalo, chicken, ribs galore. Hoss comes out to greet everybody and makes you feel like you are at his house.

5 Stars: Lip Smackin' BBQ Sauce (by marination)

I have just recently made my first visit to Big Hoss BBQ Steakhouse and let me say one thing...I would give the entire experience a 12 on a scale from 1-10. The service was exceptional, we were greeted the moment we walked in the door by a cheerful hello and friendly conversation. As we were walking to our table, the employees working behind the bar and throughout the restaurant all acknowledged our presence. We sat and were immediately taken care of by our very personable server. The server was very knowledgeable with everything on the menu and made sure that we were aware about Hoss' BBQ sauce being sold in Whole Foods this month.

My wife and I shared different dinners, hers being the Buffalo Back Ribs and I had to try theT-Bone Steak. They were both out of this world! Both filled with so much flavor and side items, we were not hungry when we walked out of there! The ribs we done so perfectly that they just fell right off the bone and the steak was cooked to perfection!!

While my wife and I were finishing our dinner, Big Hoss himself made his way to our table to chat about the latest in news, sports and of course making sure that we were satisfied. He, though standing very tall, was a very genuine person and a heck of a character. He was very easy to talk to and got our names before he left us to go chat with other tables.

This experience overall was amazing! My wife and I will be returning this weekend with some of our friends to share what we think to be the best BBQ Steakhouse in all of Denver. If you are in the mood for ribs, steak, chicken or pork go down and check this place out. You will not be disappointed!!!
