I have lived in that apartment for more than 4 years. My overall experience there is really bad. Penn Brooke Gardens is the worst apartment I have experienced. The management people are very rude. They are usually irresponsive to your maintenance request. You have to call them again and again. Although heating and hot water is included in the renting, they use some trick to stop the heating supply for most time in the freezing cold Pennsylvania winter and you have no control of the temperature inside your room. It is a rule instead of an exception for the hot water suddenly turning into cold water in the middle of your shower especially in the winter. It is very noisy. Although I lived upstairs, I can hear clearly the steps of the people downstairs and the music they played. In summer, a lot of residents always chat very loudly outside until late middle night even 1-2am and honk their cars' horn and you just can't go to sleep easily. Another very bad thing with this apartment complex is that there are a lot of roaches and bed bugs. At the time when I moved out, I saw my neighbor threw away his matrix and box because of bed bugs. The community is generally safe but in the early of this year a safety warning from the apartment management was issued regarding an armed robbery. The only 2 good things I can think of to live there are relatively easy parking and very close to Merck if you are a Merck employee. Lastly, don't expect them to return your deposit after you move out. They will find a lot of ridiculous excuses to steal most or all of your deposit. When I moved out, I cleaned the apartment very well and there is no damage at all. The guy who did the final walk through used a flashlight to detect and photo even a 1mm size taint in the carpet. After 1 month, they sent me a mail and said that they used my deposit to change the carpet and to do some other extra cleaning like mirror in the bathroom ($5), refrigerator ($25), dishwasher ($10), stove ($35), counter top ($45) and tiles($30) in the kitchen and a lot of other cleaning charges for small items ranging from $5 to $50. Through this way, they robbed most of my deposit which is more than $1,000. Probably, they know I moved far away from that area so they dare to use this disgusting way to rip me off. I would definitely sue them if I were still in Pennsylvania. An advice to all who still live in Penn Brooke Garden or who will move in: don??t pay your last month??s rent. You can??t get your deposit back anyway.
