Let me say that the margarita mixes were delicous. I tasted the watermelon and the blood orange. There wasn't too much of a difference between them because they were so sweet and sour but they were really good, we chose the watermelon.

We had a reservation one rainy Friday night. We came early, but ended up waiting 40 minutes! Apparently, reservations aren't really honored here, it's just a formality. We ended up heading over to El Vez and having drinks and appetizers, it was either that or stand in the rain!! I would have been more then happy to stay there. I must say when we were finally seated, the service was very nice and the food was exceptional, the braised short ribs were amazing! I don't know if the tequila saved the day, but after our rough start, the evening turned out to be quite nice.

Pros: Great food, nice margaritas

Cons: Terrible wait, even with reservations

.

The food is very good. I thought the margarita mixers (sans tequlia) were too expensive at $12/pitcher. One pitcher was not enough for a group of 3. Also, I know any restaurant in the city probably has roaches, but I don't like to see them crawling on the wall next to my table!

The food at Lolita is reasonably good. However, I will not be returning to this restaurant ever again because I have had terrible experiences with the service. On my most recent trip to the restaurant, we heard the host apologizing to people about the long wait, referring to our table as "the problem". He claimed we had been at the restaurant for many hours when it had actually been about 1.5 hours. When we confronted the host, he was incredibly nasty. Waiters are also usually unfriendly at this restaurant. Overall, TERRIBLE SERVICE, would not recommend Lolita. Try eating at El Vez across the street!

Our situation is similar to that of chatty83. We also made a reservation (with a very rude and impatient man over the phone) but ended up arriving ten minutes early. Well, it took everything in her, the owner, not to kick us out. "What do you expect me to do?" she barked, "kick someone out?". We weren't expecting ANY special treatment, we were just checking in and were more than happy to wait. But we didn't. We had dinner at AMADA, again, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of our evening. We happen to know a few employees of this monster and she not only owns Lolita; she also owns Bindi, Open House, Verde, Grocery and the soon-to-be mediterranean eatery next door to Verde. Why do people support these two tyrants? They too will go the path of Neil Stein... By the way, i was forced to give a rating. If it were up to me, i would have given nothing.

Cons: it's not out of business yet

We had a reservation here and we got stuck in traffic and had a hard time parking. We tried to call but the message said that they were not answering calls until later. We told this to the woman who told us that she gave our table away. We pleaded with her that it was my 20th wedding anniversary and could she please make an exception. She was rude and smug! She would not budge a bit. Even if she said it would be a little bit we would have waited. I WILL NEVER EAT HERE. Instead we walked down to CHIFA and had an INCREDIBLE meal!! She was such a b*tch. I understand her position but she didn't have to be so rude about it!

I had dinner at Lolita Friday. The food was great, the service very good, however, I AM NEVER GOING BACK!! The noise level is painful. It must average a consistent 85 to 100 decibels (I think jet engines are about 80 decibels?). I would confidently wager a bet that that is what the decibel level was in the restaurant. We didn??t stay for dessert and left an hour after we had arrived (notice other couples doing the same). Our ears were literally ringing for minutes after we left. A shame, great food and great service I??ll miss it.

Went there for the first time on a double date.. food was GREAT, i had the enchiladas.. fresh guac was awesome too. tried the blackberry and basil margheritas which were also amazing. Only drawback was that we sat outside which was nice but the table was on a HUGE slant.

I went to Lolita for the first time last night with a group of women from work. We got there early (5:00) and were the ONLY people in the place. We were still waiting for 1 of the 5 of us and we were told that we could not be seated until the whole party was there. I understand rules like that when it is busy and crowded. But, NO ONE was in the restaurant. It seemed goofy and the snobbish attitude turned me off from the start.

Luckily, unlike the manager, the waiter was nice and the chefs have the skills to back up the pricing. I'll be back, I just hope the manager has the night off that day.

I went to Lolita for the first time after hearing a friend rave about the margaritas. We went on a Friday evening and were able to sit outside. Since it is a BYO, we got a pitcher of margaritas and were able to add our own tequila. Yum. The free chips and salsa were good though both salsas were a bit too spicy for my liking. I had the mahi mahi, which was excellent. The portion size was perfect and the flavors of the dish were so good.

As with many small restaurants, the tables inside and out were almost on top of each other. If you're easily distracted, its going to be hard to carry on a conversation since, at times, you can hear the people at other tables better than the person across from you. Also, the wait staff was so fast, almost to a fault. I felt like I might get run down on my way to the bathroom. They also shooed away people who were lingering at their table once they were done since the wait was an hour. That's good for the people waiting but unfortunate for those who want to enjoy the last few sips of their drinks.

Overall, a great experience. I will definitely go back.

Cons: fast paced, tiny

Food was 3-4 stars, but everything else detracted from the experience. We were there early (5:30) yet it still was crowed and noisy. People kept coming in and standing in the doorway, leaving the door wide open. We were freezing!

For us there was simply too much going on to actually enjoy our food at Lolita. We will not go back.

In contrast to some of the negative reviews, I think the place is great. Had dinner there last night, great margaritas and great food. What else do you look for in a mexican restaurant. As for the $18 per person minimum, you mean the restaurant actually needs to make money!!? What absurd arrogant concept! Lighten up and enjoy people!

It's funny to me reading these reviews. I live in the neighborhood and stop in here occasionally after work for a nice dinner. It's easy to get a table during the week and the people that work there seem really down to earth. (To me. But then, I am a reasonable, normal person.) I will ask you, people of city search, would you come to a restaurant and 1.) already have eaten dinner. 2.) don't want to spend more than $18 (dinner in center city mind you) 3.) IF you don't want to wait during the weekend with all the other jersey jocko trash then don't go out to eat on saturday night! Some of these reviews make me really angry, and make me realize why tiny BYOBs have such policies in the first place. Because everyone wants to go there and drink for free and eat for free too. Why don't all you who already ate dinner stay HOME and leave a table open for me. Thanks.

I went for Dinner on a Saturday night and there was an hour wait so we went across the street to El Vez for a drink and some guacamole.

We had excellent food. Calamari (not fried) to start and both our entrees were delish! Our waiter, however, barely spoke to us and clearly was not listening to a thing we said. We asked to have our plates wrapped up because we had a significant amount of food left over and he either wasn't listening or forgot! When we asked about our doggie bags when the dessert arrived he dissapeared. To compensate for the food he through out he brought a tiny piece of meat in a to-go-box. It was probably about 1/8 of the amount of food we had left! Needless to say, our waiter ruined our otherwise excellent dinner. If he had given his name or even introduced himself i would call Lolita and let them know.

Went here with a group of 6 for dinner during the week. I've been here before and had great experiences. However, this evening my opinion of this place totally changed! our server was rude and snobby-are you kidding me lady-this is a byob in philadelphia-get a grip! anyway, one of us was not eating dinner but we were told there was an $18 minimum for everyone at the table-I have never heard of such a thing. But, our server was right, it states that on the menu. I think that is absurd! Her attitude and that rule make me never want to go back to this place. BTW-there were 3 tables of loud college students there that night as well-not the kind of crowd I was looking for. There are a ton of BYOB's with better service, food and atmosphere in Philly-Thanks but no thanks Lolita's!

This restaurant reminds me of the girl in high school that was beautiful and popular and super bitchy....except at the five year reunion when she's chunky, unsuccessful AND still super bitchy! I read so many good reviews- I should have checked and saw they were all written five years ago. It looks like they've been through a chef or two and now the enchilada tastes like sneakers ( don't listen to the servers, they are awful- and how do you mess up an enchilda!?). I went back again thinking every restaurant has it's bad nights- AND IT WAS WORSE! The fundido was just a giant blob of melted coagulating cheese- something I would make in college if I was really stoned and had a bunch of rotted cheese in the mini fridge. The carne assada (which the waiter swore up and down was fantastic) was mediocre and getting cold when it got to the table.
I can usually drink enough and have a good time despite the food, but what I can't accept is how bitchy the staff was. Both times we were "greeted" by an obnoxious dark haired man who apparantly thinks he's working at the Palm restaurant or something. Even our simplest questions ( can we order an appetizer to start? How does it work with the margeritas? How many does the guacamole serve?) were answered briskly and borderline nasty by our waitress (the blond with the pixie cut has some deep attitude problem she'd like to work out in front of you, watch out!). Weird.
The juices for the margeritas are pretty good though.

I had the Borrega, borrega which is grilled lamb loin, jalisco spiced lamb birria, huitlacoche-cotija stuffing, and pickled red onion ($24)...very very very tasty.

This place is a Dark long room with a curtain in covering the front door. It's best to make reservations but you can walk in on some nights. The staff can be a little too perfunctory sometimes but you can byob.

This restaurant is on the smaller side and is not good for large groups. A set menu is enforced for parties over 8 which can get quite pricey since they require that you have 3 courses. This little BYOB has yummy food and for most items on the menu you can substitute tofu for the meat in the entrees. Bring your own tequila to add to their margaritas.

My friends and I went to Lolita on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday. The wait was about an hour which is okay since we knew they didn't take reservations. However, when we gave them our cake to hold, the owner told us there is a $4 per person charge to eat our cake there. I told her that I called several days prior to ask if it would be ok to bring our own cake. I was told it would be alright and not informed about the $4 per person charge. Instead of being apologetic for being misinformed, the owner proceeded to passively accuse me of lying by stating that "obviously we've been opened for 5 years and have always had this charge." Her tone was accusatory and extremely rude. The food and the wait staff who served us were fantastic, but unfortunately, the owner was a poor representation of the restaurant!

Great food. Must note that first...and margaritas not half bad either. But. The $18 per person rule, are you kidding me? We had three girls in our party, on a busy weeknight...they were going to have us wait but we opted to take a two- person table outdoors instead. With two pitchers (I know, hated the watermelon and never finished the lime) of margaritas at $13 a pop, we sat down, waited forever to get a waiter, and when we ordered a couple of appetizers off the bat, he gave us attitiude immediately and was like, "that can't be all for you, each customer must have $18 worth...." Ok. Aside from the $26 in drinks?? Really? And we were sitting 3 people to a 2-person table, making do with the discomfort! This guys is awful: taller with dark hair= avoid! Anyway...so we order 2 ensaladas which were the reason we went in the first place, and he brings the "empanda," insisting that he heard incorrectly. We believe he did it so we would make the $18 mark. For real! So...I would love to go back because the food IS great, but because of Mr. Rude, will not be back until I see him not there! And even so, I will give the hostess an earful on him next time. Maybe someone should learn a little etiquette. We would have been way over the $18 regardless, and been back 3 times since then. Unfortunate for them, and him! And I never do that. Or have to! Seriously brutal service.

So I went there two weeks ago expecting to have a great time with my friends. To start off, the wait was 2 hours! The magaritas they made were horrible. Bad tasting watermelon. Their only choices were Lime, Watermelon and Orange. Horrible choices. They didn't even mix it for us. Just put it on our table and walked away! The service was the wost I ever experienced. We knew it was cash-only, which was kind of OK, but there was an 18 dollar minimum! What a rip off! We were told at first this didn't apply to us, so we ordered... but then they came back out and said "oh, nevermind. It does." We all started drinking our poorly made tequilas at this point, so we had no option but to stay. The manager came over to explain that they weren't a "bar" but a restaurant" and spoke to us in such a rude manner. It was very off-putting. The food was wretched. She got our order wrong two times and the pork was drenched in salt. Totally gross. Our bill, for 4 people, came to about $120! They charged like $20 for the "tequila mix". Later that night, I was sad to see I left my jacket there. I called the next day to see if they had it. I spoke with a woman who said that it was there. The next day, I went to pick it up, but no one knew where it was. I gave a manager my name and he told me he'd call me right back. Four days passed, and I got no call. I called again and left a message. Nothing. Called again two days later. Nothing. I was really mad at this point. Finally, I called the other day and spoke with the owner. She said she had no idea what the girl was talking about, but they do not have it. So, apparently, they got my messages, but didn't call me back, and lost my jacket. That girl couldn't have been "imagining" that jacket! The owner wasn't even concerned! Didn't even offer to pay! Now, that is poor customer service!

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER go here!!!!

It does." We all started drinking our poorly made tequilas at this point, so we had no option but to stay. the experience was wonderful. we went on a friday night at 6pm because we were afraid of the "wait" times people say this place is worth...we were seated immediately and ordered the bloood orange margarita mix immediately. delcious! for apps we ordered the guacamole and the tamal...it was like being in heaven..the guacamole and chips were so much better than anywhere i have ever been and put el vez across the street to shame. being mexican, moving here from texas recently and growing up on this food i was estactic to find this place. for entrees we had the salmon and veggie enchiladas. the salmon was perfect the enchiladas had a little too much mushroom for my taste but i wouldn't say it spoiled the meal at all. the service was great. we took our time and the waiter never made us feel rushed. i will go back again and again and again. order the guacamole and tamal apps you'll be glad you did.

I couldn't help hearing from people talk about this place so I decided to take an out of town friend from Miami to Lolita's. We didn't speak the entire time we were eating because we were busy savoring every single bite. It was the most incredible Mexican food I have ever eaten. Truly, we were taken back by the portion thinking it wouldn't be enough but by the end of the meal we were almost full. The nachos w/ the salsa and guacamole was soooooo tasty. And I have to speak about the "Blod Orange" margarita mix. OMG! We loved it so much. This place is a must go. Yeah, the wait was about 45 minutes on a Fri nite @ around 7but we talked about this place the next day too. Have fun and..................BRING YOUR OWN TEQUILA!!!!!

So, I read all the reviews.....and to tell you the truth I was apprehensive. Would I wait for 2 hours?, would the host be rude? would the food be any good? Lolita was amazing. We were seated right away on a saturday night! The host was incredible! The food was something I would go back for again and again.
We had the smoked salmon app. Give it a try... you will not be let down. dinner was great. order dessert. the coconut cake with chocolate potDe creme is out of this world. Go GO GO. But not on the night we are going back..... we want a fast table again!

Overall lolita is more of a place to be seen then to go. We waitined almost 2 1/2 hours for a table, and were sat by a rude and pushy host. Our waiter seemed nice and all the food came out right on time. However the rest of the staff was miserable and one waitress yelled out for people to eat faster because others were waiting. I'm sorry if im paying im not rushing! The food was a 10. I had the duck and was blown away. Others at my table also were impressed with the food as well. Just the being rushed and the pushy staff kinda turned me away on this one. I would defiently try it for the b.y.o.t experience and the food. But if your looking for a quiet evening where you can enjoy you meal this is not the place for you.

Went on a Friday night without a reservation and only waited twenty minutes. Forgot that its a BYO but the very helpful waiter found us a left over bottle of tequila for our margaritas. Guacomole was great, seemed as if it was a bottomless plate. Main courses were also well proportioned and the short ribs were delicious. Service was fantastic as is hard to find good service in this city. Comfortable atmosphere, reasonably priced. Highly Recommened.

Showed up for dinner at 8:30pm Saturday, party of 4 and was turned away as they were not seating anymore tables for the night. What?s up with that? Stuck carrying around a bottle of tequila for the rest of the night.

Lolita sets the standard in presentation, quality, menu variation, and service. It gives all of these other little BYOs a run for their money. The rock fish was rich and filling as were the shrimp enchiladas. We filled up on the chips and salsa and were unable to finish our meals. We were too stuffed. We took home the rest. The portions are huge! Highly, highly impressed! We can't wait to go back.

We tried out Lolita for the first time after hearing lots of good reports from friends. We were very happy with the food and service. I'm not sure what some of the other reviews are about because we had a pleasant experience. Portions are generous, prices are fair and the margaritas are very good. Not too sweet, not too sour. Our food was fresh, flavorful and well presented. I would definitely recommend and will return!

Couldn't wait to try Lolita, but I was greatly disappointed with the experience. Went with my boyfriend last Friday night, it was busy but by no means were they getting slammed. Great table by the window, awesome appetizer, entree was so so for the price. Did not expect to pay $10 for a pitcher of basically sour mix at a BYOT, I mean come on, you can't mix the margueritas for free, pretty cheap guys. Anyway, that is not the worst of it. Our waiter, although having zero personality was pleasant & the food came out fine. THEN, after we paid our check ($90 for the two of us, don't forget we brought our own tequila) the host had the NERVE to come over to our table, clipboard in hand, in an extremely snooty fashion and ask us if we paid and if so could we finish up because he had a long wait!!!! Is it okay for a couple to finish their drinks after dinner?? Our waiter must have cleared the last plate maybe 10 minutes beforehand! I have never in my life been treated in this way in a restaurant & I go out to eat in center city quite a bit. We vowed never to go there again & to tell everyone we know how rude the host was. Can't believe a guy like that has a job in the hospitality industry. He was the absolute worst. DON"T GO, you can get WAY better mexican across the street at El Vez!!

If you are an experienced restaurant diner, STAY AWAY!!!!
When you have 67 REVIEWS and 7 are TERRIBLE due to friendliness of the staff, that?s saying something.

I had the exact same experience as phillygirl2007 from 11/23/2007.

First, we had a group of 5 meeting for dinner and then going to a show. We were on a schedule. Lolita?s will not take a reservation on Friday night.

Three (3) of us came together and arrived first. They would not seat us at a table for 5-6. They seated us at a table for 4 and said they would pull up a chair to make it seat 5 if they showed. Tables for 5-6 were available throughout our visit. They would not take an appetizer order because ?their rules? made them take ?complete? orders. Then when we did order, they brought chips and salsa with the appetizer (could have brought the chips while we were waiting).

We had words with the host about the table when we sat down. We could not move to a table for 6 when the remaining 2 of the table of 5 showed up. We could not order appetizers BEFORE the main course (like every other restaurant in the world). The only redeeming quality of the restaurant was the food.

Then, they applied a 20% gratuity. I?m sorry, I thought gratuity was for good service?

When people talk about going out to dinner, they talk about the dining experience. The dining experience deals with the ambiance, the service, and the food.

The food was good but not worth tolerating their ?Rules?. If we weren?t paying money for this experience it would have been comical. I will be surprised if this restaurant survives 2008 with these rules. I have NEVER eaten at a restaurant with so many rules. And as you can expect, I will never eat there again.

For the Restaurant Reviewer, How do you give a 5 star rating to a restaurant with 44 excellent reviews and 7 (now 8) not recommended reviews?

Lolita lived up to all the great hype I've heard. I should have come sooner. Our server has great recommendations and the BYOT thing is genius! We had the margaritas, carnitas appetizer, and the beef tenderloin (extremely good) and the shrimp enchiladas. Environment was fun and upbeat. Will be back soon - by the time we left, a lot of people were waiting for tables, but they take cell phone numbers and call you when your table is ready. Definitely worth the time and money.

Fascinated by Philadelphia's constant need to be sloshed at dinner and not remember the food, aka BYOB's. Lolita is one of these Philadelphia type restaurants. Lolita is such a horrible place that I begin to have spasm's just thinking about the miserable food that I was subjected to and the "absolutely no service that was provided ".
Owners Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney destroy what has come to be called Finer Mexican cuisine. So now it's time to destroy what is Indian cuisine with a new spot?
They are having a dry run? Hope they are providing something not so dry to prevent spasm's.
So bring your bottles of twist off wine, wino's....and stay sloshed..
You won't notice the food or have a stomach spasm..
These two should only be allowed to cook chow for "Bark Mitzvah's"
and be prevented from SPASMing" unsuspecting souls .

My boyfriend and I recently took a trip to Philly from Washington DC. We both love Mexican food and margaritas so when I discovered Lolita, I thought it was the perfect spot for dinner. It went beyond my expectations. DC doesn't have any BYOB restaurants so I thought the concept of BYOT (Bring Your Own Tequila) was cute and different. Mixing our own margaritas made the experience fun and unique! The food was amazing- such a good blend of mexican flavors. I also really liked the overall atmosphere- it reminded me of a small New City restaurant since the decor was trendy and sophisticated. Overall, it was a great experience!

The owner was hostile from the first moment. The restaurant was empty, and we were a party of 3 We said we probably had two more people to join us. She ordered that we wait for those people outside (it was about 38 - not the best time to chill out). She refused to seat us. The woman was so firm on her "policies" - as if she was managing a space station, not a restaurant. I will never go back, the place has a negative vibe. I did not have a chance to try the food, but I go out to enjoy the company and the atmosphere. Regardless of what they cook the atmosphere is great only for those who want to face a challenge to fight for their food.

I'll start off with the one thing I didn't like. It's loud. It's a narrow BYOB so noise really travels. If you?re going with a group then you'll be fine, as you will be the ones annoying the couples trying to hear one another. If you?re going with your hubbie, and you like talking to them, as I do, then try and sit next to one another. Or you can do Morse code with your silverware. That aside, the cuisine is amazing. The chef of this place is very talented. The menu isn't huge, and the service is as cool as a cucumber. I love margaritas, and this place is a margaritas lover?s paradise. Bring a bottle of top notch tequila, and order your own pitcher of home made mixer. The flavors of the dishes I had were jaw dropping. If you have a group of 4 or more, you?ll love this place. If you don't like talking to your significant other then you'll love this place.

This restaurant is fabulous! My sister and I love to go to BYOs in the city, and this is by far one of the best we have been to. The margarita mix was fabulous (we just had the regular) and the food was outstanding. we got seated no problem for 2 people on a busy saturday around 7pm. Food came out very fast, and our server Scott was very friendly. I had the salmon which was delicious, as was the guacamole! And oh my god, desserts are heavenly!!! Try the bread pudding or cheesecake. Cheesecake is light and fluffy. The salmon was cooked on the lighter side, which I love, and a lot of places overcook salmon for my liking, since I am a sushi fan. I would go back in a heartbeat. Cute and warm atmosphere, and the prices are very reasonable. I'd give my experience a 10 out of 10!

Loved it! I just moved to the city from New York and a friend suggested I try this place. We did the BYOT thing and had some great margaritas and the food was just as good. The place was totally packed and we had to wait about half an hour, but that was no big deal because we just got drinks across the street. My only complaint is that it is cash only--but I guess it's worth it considering the savings with the margaritas. Food was totally fresh, came out piping hot and had flavor! Service was on point and very accomodating. Highly recommended. I hope all the food in Philly is this good.

We went there with some friends on a Sat night. It was packed and they only take reservations on weeknights, so we knew we would have a long wait for a party of 5, but they took our cell number while we went to nearby pub and called us well in advance of the hour and a half wait they told us we would have. Our waiter was friendly and informative yet not overbearing and the margaritas were delicious - best we've had at a BYOT! The food was truly spectacular and it was a fun atmosphere, Best Mexican so far in Philly.

The best feature is BYOT and their delicious Margarita's.
However, this place has the worst acoustics and tends to be way too loud, you end up shouting to your friend across the table to be heard (and drinking Tequila doesn't help the volume levels)

The food is great and very creative but not actually authentic Mexican.
Plus the service is lousy, some of us wanted to only drink and eat appetizers, and a couple wanted to actually have dinner.
If they even saw you eat a bite from a friends plate you got charged a $5 plate sharing charge. There was no plate sharing involved other than a try this. the plate did not even move an inch closer to my friend and he got charged $5 for that bite.
I thought that was pretty silly. It took about 10 minutes of arguing but after calling the manager over it was resolved. Restaurants should not have to be so anall if they are charging ridiculous prices to begin with.

Pros: BYOT, Margarita flavors, creative flavors

Cons: not authentic, noisy and overpriced

.

I just came from a terrible experience at Lolita. I would not recommend it to anyone. The owner was downright hostile to my part of 7, insisting (after we had sat down and started our margaritas) that our party could only order from a fixed price menu, which is the house rule for parties of 10 or more. I was ready to leave at that point, but my friends wanted to stay-- which we later regretted. My mahi mahi was seriously overcooked and too aggressively seasoned, as if to compensate for the distinct fishy smell. The appetizer salad and desert were quite well prepared, but could do little make up for poorly prepared main course or the contempt with which we were treated.
