What a shame this place is owned by such a rude and unprofessional woman. Food was good, waitress was great however she was very on edge and seemed scared of the owner! We had a group dinner there and we were told our table was talking

A rare find. One of those small independently owned restaurants. The owners have a real passion for food and they show it in every meal that is presented. This is also one of those rare BYOB restaurants in Philadelphia. August is only open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. It is upscale.

August provides an intimate and well decorated atmosphere for casual dining. The food deserves recognition and the service is great. Our waitress was very attentive and always with a smile. The owners welcomed us in with great conversation, providing a homey feel that can only be found in South Philly. We quickly became part of the family at this reasonably priced BYO. Be sure to check it out.

After trying to get reservations here for 2 weeks, I finally got a table. The place is so cute and well decorated, so it made a great first impression. Not to mention we were greeted by very friendly staff. The menu looked great, I had a pork chop special that I was told used to be on the menu- IT WAS SO GOOD! My dining partner had the rigatoni bolognese, which was also very good. But I think that my pork chop was honestly the best pork chop I have ever tasted- ever. For dessert we had the banana bread pudding- very yummy. My date and I were the last people to leave the restaurant, and instead of being rushed out, we chatted for about an hour with the owners and staff. It was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. I would recommend this place to anyone for the great food and also the exceptional service.

My friends and I ate here at this delightful restaurant for "Dining Out For Life",where the staff is very accomodating. They keep the menu simple with choices of pasta, seafood, and steak, with a nice assortment of delicious desserts. The atmosphere is elegant and cozy, great for a date or just being out with friends. I'd recommend this place to anyone!

August continually makes my mouth water. Absolutely everything and anything I yearn to have is on the menu and when it arrives, it tastes delicious, looks inviting and has you wanting to devour your own entree and both of your neighbors' selections. The wait staff is experienced, sociable, and attentive. The chef handles the demands of her busy dining room with ease and expertise. The hostess gracefully handles all clients with hospitable, friendly charm even when there is a lot going on. I live in the neighborhood. I frequent restaurants all over the city. I am a restauranataholic. I choose August once a week and it has never disappointed. Whether you are a BYOB junkee, a fine diner, or a dessert gourmet, this is the place to make your favorite hangout.

I was disappointed with August. We had 9:30 reservations on Saturday night (4/26) We arrived at 9:20 and the hostess told us it would be a few minutes for a table. No big deal- the hostess was very sweet! She called us in at 9:45 and our 2 friends had not arrived yet. Not 5 minutes after we sat down, our waitress- a different woman- was pressuring us as to their whereabouts. She was very rude and said that if they did not arrive by 10 they would not be able to serve us. I tried to place an order for an appetizer for the table, and she told us that the chef would not do that since the rest of our group had not arrived yet. Our friends arrived 10 minutes after we sat down and the waitress was still rude! If you are accepting 9:30 reservations, you have to be flexible with a 10pm kitchen closure. Especially on a Saturday night! It?s not unheard of to wait 20 min for a table- even if you do have a reservation! The menu was small, but everything looked great. However, I was surprised that they did not have entree specials. Our food was delicious, but the experience was ruined by extremely poor service. Throughout our meal, we noticed other patrons drinking limoncello. We ordered dessert and asked if they had limoncello. Our rude waitress told us ?Yes, but it has to be offered to you.? RUDE! I can think of several other ways to POLITELY tell us it?s not available. I would never go back and I would not recommend it to anyone. The food was good, but our waitress needs to learn some manners! I would feel terrible if a friend received the same poor and untactful service as we did. I hope that the management takes note of this review and reevaluates some of their policies. This tiny restaurant is off the beaten path and word of mouth can be a great advertisement. In this case, there are tons of restaurants in South Philly that are much more accommodating and happy to serve their patrons.

August is one of the citys great treasures. I almost hate giving a review because then I won't be able to get in once the peeps start flocking. However I can NOT help but post that these two women turn out the MOST deliscoious food in a beautiful atmosphere. There is a reason they are one or only 1000 top Italian resturants in THE USA!!!! DO NOT MISS THIS WONDERFUL PLACE. YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP COMING.

I recently dined at August with my wife and four friends and we had a great evening among ourselves and our wine until the end. We were told by the owner that our group was being ?annoying? and were told to be quiet. Enjoying the company of friends and fine wines is apparently not allowed within August BYOB. It surprised me that they allowed another table to sing Happy Birthday to a guest, but it turned out the guest was the chef. This small piece of information alone suggests that the owner is hypocritical at best and arrogant at worst for telling our group that we were being loud and annoying while they sing Happy Birthday at the top of their lungs. What my group finds annoying are small BYOB owners who think they are hot shots. We also find small BYOB owners who think they are hot shots and produce bad food annoying. Selections we found unappetizing were the overcooked pork chop with oily broccoli rabe, tilapia overpowered with lemon and the self proclaimed Italian restaurant overcooking bowtie pasta. I have a few suggestions for the hot shot owner. First, she should enroll her chef in some cooking classes. If you are overcooking pasta in an Italian restaurant there is something wrong. Second, she should enroll herself in some basic business etiquette courses. She seems to have forgotten that her patrons keep her doors open and when she continues insulting them the doors will eventually be closed for good. It also slipped her mind that word of mouth travels fast. Six individual?s negative opinion of anything will multiply dramatically over time. She may have gotten mediocre reviews in the past, but eventually worse reviews will follow mine with statements such as "the stale menu and dark and drab interiors will be the last thing served at this restaurant". Good luck and we will not see you again.

P.S. Our server was excellent and we Philadelphians take care of each other even if they do work for bad people.

I love a good BYOB and this place hits the spot. It has everything I love about a neighborhood restaurant: competent, friendly staff; amazing food (the spring rolls and pasta farfalle are a MUST); buzzing conversation; and a warm, relaxed environment. Everytime we have out of town company we try to take them to August. I love the personal touch added by the owners - each menu has a different picture taken by the owners and staff.
Making reservations is a good idea. Because its so popular there is ALWAYS a crowd. If you're not into elbow to elbow seating, skip it. This place is your typical cozy, one room BYOB.

My friend and I went to August this past weekend. This was my third time thre, and everything was just ok--the food is consistently average, but they offer enough selection to ensure something for everyone. Its never a good sign if every time you go to a little place like this there are different servers.

Well I must say that we enjoyed August even more the second time around. I thought they were great the first time I was there a few months ago and was fully prepared to be disappoined (this is normally how it goes) on the second visit. To our delight it was fantastic. There were 6 of us and not a complaint in the bunch. We are all still talking about how great the food is as well as the staff who could not have been more accomodating, especially as one of my companions was in a leg cast and on crutches. Every effort was made to make him feel comfortable without bothering anyone else. I had to chuckle at the nasty review from a while ago that complained about trying to change the number of people from 6 to 7, like it's no big deal. Having worked in the restaurant business for many years I know that it is a big deal and I can't imagine after the kindness that the August staff showed us that they would not have made every effort to resolve an impossible situation. I do know that each of us will go back again and again.

I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT THIS RESTAURANT IS NOT VERY ACCOMMODATING. THERE WERE RESERVATIONS MADE FAR IN ADVANCE FOR A FUND RAISER. WE WANTED TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL PERSON AND THEY WOULD NOT CHANGE THE RESERVATION. I COULD UNDERSTAND IF WE WERE CHANGING FROM 6 PEOPLE TO 10 PEOPLE, BUT 6 PEOPLE TO 7 ? THIS EVENT WAS TO RAISE MONEY FOR A VERY WORTHY CAUSE. I WAS FORCED TO MAKE RESERVATIONS ELSEWHERE! AND AS FOR FUTURE I WILL EAT ELSEWHERE AS WELL. NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE FOOD IS!

I've only been to this cute little place once and had a nice meal. The only drawback I had was the fact that it has an open kitchen. When I'm done with my meal, I don't want to smell more food being prepared. Other than that, I found the place to be comfortable, the waitstaff to be friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere pleasant.

Last Thursday I returned to August and once again experienced great food in a warm, inviting atmosphere, served by an attentive, knowledgable wait staff. I never get tired of this place! They make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive, and I have never ever been rushed to finish my meal. Chef Maryann Brancaccio's down-home but innovative dishes are always delicious; my personal favorites include an artichoke appetizer to die for, an extremely tasty talapia entree, a heavenly light-textured cheesecake (I think it's a secret family recipe), and possibly the best pasta bolognese I've ever tasted (and I've tasted quite a few in and out of South Philly). BTW--I've always easily found a parking place...This has definitely become my favorite Phila. BYOB.

I had reservations for dinner early sat 10/15. Unfortunately of my party of 4, 2 were hung up in a traffic accident jam and were 1/2 hr. late, a fact we announced upon entering. Not a problem we were told. Not true. After 1 and 3/4 hrs. we were about to order dessert and were informed that we were running out of time. The next reservation party would be arriving soon and that we would have to hurry. I asked to see the managemnt and the same message was reiterated in not too kind a fashion.

We left rather than be further abused. Pity because the food wasn't bad and I know small places like to honor their reservations, but diners should be treated a little more kindly. I'd never go back.

What a gem this discovery is! August is an upscale place in the heart of of South Philly. The service is first class, the place is spotless and you are welcomed like family to this twist on Italian eatery. Maryann Brancaccio's cusine is delectable. She is flexible and if you like something special, she's sure to accomodate but it's hard to ask for any improvement on her delicious food. The roasted peppers, crabcakes, scallops and pastas are my personal favs but everything I've tried has been a winner and let's not talk about the desserts! They are phenomenal from the cheesecake to the chocolate torte, the lemon pie, the chocolate/banana bread pudding and the biscotti. It's a delightful experience where you're welcomed to come stay awhile and the room is peaceful and lovely.

The only reason August remains relatively unknown is its somewhat out of the way location. This is a true gem; a romantic South Philly Italian restaurant with wonderful food.
The appetizers are typically worth the above-average price. The scallops are delicious, and, when available, the lamb chops are wonderfully rare.
The main courses are all very reasonably priced and, while not too adventurous, offer very skillful variations on traditional Italian fare. Every main course Ive tried has been good, and the tilapia was excellent. They do a very good job with fish and shellfish dishes.
The service is good, with the rare knowledge of when to leave you alone to sit and enjoy the night.
The crowd is late-arriving. If you want to eat before 7, reservations are most likely not necessary. However, if you want to eat later on a Weekend night, they are recommended.

Can't say enough good things about this place. Attentive waitstaff serving really good food in a sophisticated setting. It reminded me of the Ivy in London. The focus is where it should be - on the food and the diner's comfort & enjoyment.

Great food for those who really know food. The seafood dishes here are exceptional...the crabcake better than Perrier's! Service is warm, professional and unobtrusive, way above usual BYOB standards.

This BYOB in South Philly has been consistently delightful. Italian food with a twist, spring rolls filled w/angel hair pasta & salmon served with whole wheat pasta aiolo & greens. The roasted pepper appetizer is incredible - served hot with asiago cheese - yummm! My favorite entree is the tilapia with scallion risotto. Dessert selection is limited but really good. It's a romantic restaurant without being cutesy and cozy without being claustrophobic. Prices are moderate, figure about $30-35 per person with tax and tip.
