Although the decor leaves something to be desired - the food more than makes up for it.

The Hot pot here is quite good - you can select from several items: fish, meat, veg to add to the boiling broths - split into two selections, regular and spicy.

Skip over the American Chinese food section of the menu - stick with the authentic items

I went to Chung King on 7/23/08.

The service was good. The person who appeared to be the greeter was very well dressed and both he and the waitress were very helpful.

The food was ok. Tsingtao beer was good, roasted string beans with garlic and ginger well done. The whole fish with sauce was very mild as I requested. The pig ears were, well, pig ears. Tea was fine.

The r@t was bad. Very very bad. After my friend and I finished our meal, a big fat r@t walked out of the kitchen into the dining area, finding a nice shady place to relax under one of the unoccupied tables near the kitchen. After I pointed it out to my friend and he pointed it out to the staff, the r@t realized his presence was unwelcome and ran back to the kitchen. The staff looked vaguely in the direction of the place where my friend pointed.

I was surprised that they didn't offer us the meal on the house or even to take one thing off the bill, but my friend and the staff were speaking Chinese so I don't know what was said. You can find a recent inspection report on philly.everyblock.c0m. Bon Appetit.

Pros: Good service

Cons: Unwanted guests

What happened? This place used to be incredible. I introduced many people over the past two years. However, it looks like the restaurant has changed management. The dishes are not as tasty. The Dan Dan Mian are bland and watery now. The alium dumplings are a shadow of their former selves. The waitstaff is a little more pleasant, but I have gone there twice in the past week, ordering some of my favorite dishes, and none of them are even close to as good as they used to be.

What happened? This 3-star, average restaurant was a 5-star, only a short time ago...I almost want to cry, I loved the old one so much.
