I loved this place. The owner sat and talked with me for a while and the food was outstanding. A previous person mentioned having to pay for water - I guess they've changed since that post as the water was free during my visit. I had salmon patties, fried eggs, grits, and wheat toast - I'm salivating just thinking about how good my food actually was.

I do agree, the parking can be a chore - but the restaurant is in an old S. Philly Corner Row Home - come to think of it, there's bad parking at my house, and bad parking anywhere else in this city. Another downside is that there's not much of a remedy for the summer heat in the place (I went during the recent three day heat wave and they had a box fan running).

The menu was pretty eclectic, but the food brought out to others looked outstanding. Surprisingly, they take credit cards (not a lot of places in Philly that do)!

I think it's definitely worth your visit. I plan on taking my wife and friends back to this Point Breeze gem.

I absolutely loved this place. I went when there when there werent many people there, so seating was fast. The food is unbelievably good. If you're looking for some comfort food, this is the place to go eat. The pancackes and the homefries are AMAZING ( and I dont usually like homefries). The people that serve you are wonderful and kind. The food is a little slow, but everything is made from absolute scratch, and cooked in real pans ( according to owner) and not like some fast food places that industrially cook their food on a table of heated metal. Overall this place is great, and the food, home made and delicious!

Pros: Amazing pancakes and home fries!

Cons: Slow food

Lets talk about the slow service, we waited over thirty mins for our food...it was cold and the meat was sour!! The owner took back the meat and wanted to replace it with another piece , we declined. you cant even sit down to eat first, you have to pay before your order is put in . No glasses for water, you have to BUY a bottle of water. Would not recommend unless service and owner had new improvements. And for all you brothers and sisters who dont eat pork for religious reason...again ITS NOT FOR YOU!! All food is fried in same grease and on the same grill, this 411 came from her own staff! Sorry, maybe things will change in the future

I found my experience at Merl's wonderful. The food was excellant, prices reasonable with a down home atmosphere. Merl personally provided superb customer service and I definitely recommend it to everyone who want's more than their money worth. You are guaranteed to get it at Merl's.
