I had dinner at this establishment a couple of nights ago thinking I would avoid some of the other large scale spanish restaurants, bad idea. There is a reason why the restaurant was empty while all the other places like amada and tinto are packed. They deliver solid product in a warm atmosphere. Cafe Apamate, to my dismay, does not. EVERYTHING about this experience was a catastrophe. The food, was either under or over cooked, or under or over seasoned. The service was nothing close to personable. The menu is entirely over priced for the portions. The restaurant was cold, the silverware was dirty, and there was actually a chocolate on the spoon in which i received for my nine dollar cup of soup. I normally dont take the time to slam a restaurant, but it was that bad. Im sure this place will not be open to much longer.

What a great little restaurant!!! It is intimate, service attentive and knowledgeable. Great ambiance and the food is phenomenal. Way better experience than amada and tinto, prices are very affordable! And BYOB people! They make your wine into great sangria!!!

My boyfriend and I went here a few months back with a Restaurant dot com certificate. Upon seating- we told the waitress about the certificate (which we just thought was polite) and we got a bit of an earful about how she didn't know why the restaurant was on a site like that. And then she proceeded to tell us that the certificate was WRONG and we actually had to order 2 entrees AND 2 apps. We were going to argue since this was ridiculous but we were planning on ordering 2 apps anyway.
The place had a 'cafe pretending to be a nice restaurant' vibe. The noise from the kitchen- hearing the whirrrr of the refrigerator echoing from behind a bright red wall was distracting.
The rice ball app was good, the mix cheese and meat plate was a joke.. small and overpriced. Tangerine's or Tria's is much better.
The squid ink risotto was good. The special steak with bleu cheese was awful. It was the size of my fist (small) but it wasn't a filet.. with the quality of filet mignon its ok if its only 6oz.. and the sauce was awful.
I don't recommend this place based on my experience. I concede that maybe the food was just off that night.. and I'm the first to say 'who cares' about so-so service as long as the rest is great.. But this place missed on all counts.

Cons: decor,no acoustic separation from kitchen, service, 1/2 food

Tiny Spanish BYOB specializing in tinxtos (extra teeny tapas). Everything is authentic, delicious, and superbly hand-crafted. The more you know about food, the more you will appreciate the vast amount of work invested in each perfectly rendered plate. Just about the most wine-friendly food ever.

I have eaten practically everything on the menu and celebrated many birthdays and happy family dinners here. Favorites include: morcillo sausage "candies", ribeye & cabrales, the charcuteria plate, black rice w/shrimp & calamari, and of course churros & hot chocolate!

Servers are good or excellent - all are fully capable of discussing the ingredients & preparation and communicating with the kitchen to accommodate a special diet restriction. The chef/owner is often in the minuscule kitchen and it's clear that she & her people REALLY appreciate curious, attentive diners. The wait for food can be somewhat long, but it seems appropriate considering the amount of last-minute attention the food needs.

The restaurant is very clean and prettily decorated. It's somewhat romantic, although I would certainly be comfortable there without a mate. They have outdoor seating in the back when the weather is warm.
Pricing is fair, and the more you know about food, ingredients and cooking the more you will appreciate what they deliver.

I went here for brunch a few months back. The chorizo was a bit disappointing. I felt like I was eating a slim jim. I can't speak to the other items on the menu though

I had such an amazing meal at this place. I live all over Spain for 15 years and was so happy to find this place. Most place that label themselves as Spanish are NOT! My service was great. Friendly and knowledgeable. Lets take the label of "bad" or "slow" it is a label people. Stop repeating what you read or hear. This place really impressed me since I had very little expectations after the "great ones" were ok but again not authentic or good. Spanish food is not pretentious and VERY flavorful so STOP glorifying the other expensive krap and TRAVEL!

We had a great time at Cafe Apamate! The tapas are amazing there but the churros did not taste right - it may have been an off day for that. I do like their prices and service.

It's hard to say how I feel about this place. The first time I went there, it was for a late lunch and I sat in the backyard and it was great. The food was wonderful, the menu was diverse, the service was great. Then I went back for breakfast and we had a great waiter (sooo nice and on top of things), the food was still really good. Then apparently, the chef changed and I guess the quality of service did too because everytime I went in after that, it was awful. The waiters were different and unfriendly, the food was so bad i had to send things back on two different occasions (which I NEVER do becuase I feel weird about it even though I shouldn't), and I finally stopped going alltogether for fear of what kind of experience I would have. This is a shame because I live literally around the corner and it was so nice to have a nice restaurant right there.

I was so excited to try Apamate, that even when my boyfriend and I couldn't get reservations (5 or more only, understandable for such a small place), I pushed for us to try a little later in the evening, after the Saturday night rush. When we entered the restaurant, it took well over 2 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us. Chalking it up to busyness, I was caught a little off-guard when the "hostess" (possible manager) came up right in my face (less than 9 inches away), and promptly didn't say a word. After assuming she worked there, I spoke first and asked for a table. Her initial response was that they were packed full- upon looking around, I could surmise they had been busy earlier, but seeing the table directly in front of us paying their bill and getting ready to leave, and looking over to the table to left finishing dessert, I assumed it would only be a matter of moments before a table opened. When she didn't say anything after her quick reply, I offered that we would wait- and was completely surprised with the response. Although it was late at 9:30pm (dinner service till 10:00pm), I was told that they would be closed and unable to serve us by then.

After working in the restaurant industry for a number of years, I was completely turned-off by this response. Even some type of warm, "I hope you understand, but the kitchen had a rough night and will be closing right at 10:00" or, "we really would like you to have the best experience possible, and we don't know if you will have enough time to do so" would have been better. And beyond what was (and wasn't) said, there was a complete lack of sympathy extended. The couple in the seats in front of us left as I stood there trying to comprehend what I was hearing. And without another word, our hostess turned and walked away. After being treated so rudely, there is no way I will go back and actually try the food- there are too many other spectacular restaurants in Philly that deserve the service.

We really enjoyed our dinner and our service was great. From the moment we stepped in the door. We enjoyed the private patio in back. It was intimate, perfect for our big date night. There was a small wait but not bad. We sat at the bar while we waited and the hostess opened our wine for us. Everyone was lovely and the food was amazing. We tried a few of the specials if you can get the confit of mushrooms, go for it, so delicious. We had been in before and it is always worth the little wait, with the outdoor tables there is alot more seating. Doesn't matter if you have to wait a bit, do it!

Amazing Place! I am Spanish and this place is very tradional (Reginal Basque though) and a bit of asturian and galician! Great combination of influences. The food was delicious. Everything we had was very good. The chef is very nice and determine to bring the real deal and we are glad! The place is really perfect, the music, the colors, service(my waitress was great!) Overall, the only real spanish bistro in town! Highly recommended

Not a friendly restaurant. I would only attempt to go if you have a reservation. They only take reservations for
parties of 5 or more. If you walk in with a party of 2-4 plan on waiting a long time. They only seat apx. 25 people in total. They will book the whole restaurant with large parties. We have had breakfast with was good but slow service. Would not go back.

I used to live in Spain, so I was excited when this place opened, as there aren't that many places to get good Spanish food in town. I was throughly disappointed with nearly everything our party ordered. The tortilla was skimpy, not at all like the thick, hearty tortillas that you generally get in Spain. The pepito de lomo was drenched in aioli to the point where you couldn't even taste the pork. And the churros were soggy, sorely lacking that fantastic crispness that really great churros have. It's about as Spanish as Olive Garden is Italian.

Went for breakfast. Unusual but delicious fare.. toasted baguette with Serano ham, croquettes, interesting hot and cold sandwiches for brunch. Enjoyable ambiance.
