.

I discovered this small family run cafe when I was traveling back and forth to Mt. Pocono three days a week for school. My class started at 8am, unreasonably early for someone who rarely functions properly before noon. I needed coffee, and I didn??t like the idea of trying to get out of the Dunkin?? Donuts parking lot closer to my school. Sarah Ellen was right there on the way, easy in and out.

The cafe is on the first floor of a historical home that used to be part of the Henryville Inn. From the road you wouldn??t know it was there if not for a very small sign. The main part consists of a deli counter, a few small snack shelves, and a cooler of cold beverages. Very standard. The best part is the dining area, which consists of a sofa, a few comfortable chairs, a small table, and a desk. Newspapers, puzzles, old books, and games create a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your meal. I used to leave early on test days so I could spend some time studying at the small table near the window while I ate breakfast.

Eleanor, the woman who runs Sarah Ellen, makes a fantastic egg and cheese bagel sandwich. The egg is just the right consistency and she understands what ??very lightly toasted? means. She provides a warm environment and great conversation. The prices are very inexpensive. A large coffee and a bagel with egg and cheese cost me about $3. Other typical deli fare is available, and the display case contains muffins, donuts, bagels, and other bakery items. The selection varies day by day. The hours are limited to breakfast and lunch, she closes at 2pm on most days. So stop by early. Whether you just need a quick breakfast to take on your way to work or you need a quiet place to enjoy your lunch and read the paper, Sarah Ellen is the best place on Rt. 191 between Stroudsburg and Mt. Pocono to stop. It makes taking the back way well worth it.
