We visited Arbat after adopting our son from Russia. The food over there was interesting - what should have been hot was cold and vice-versa, and that's only what I could identify. Enter Arbat - with a knack for what Americans like from the seemingly infinite variations of Russian cuisine.

Start with one of a variety of Russian and Ukrainian beers or spirits. I had a Baltic ale, and it was fabulous. So good, I ordered another before the main course was served.

The potato pancake appetizers were outstanding - they were tender and hearty, just like grandma used to make. I had the pork loin stuffed with cheese and I would put it up to one of the best "schnitzel" dishes I have ever tasted. My wife had the meat and rice stuffed cabbages - another winner - and with the generous portion she took the extra home and had it for lunch the next day.

For dessert we split a blini - absolutely perfect with fresh raspberries and raspberry sauce artistically drizzled around the edges. It was fabulous, and with the absence of the cloud of cigarette smoke we had to deal with in the cafes of Moscow, we never realized blinis could taste this good.

This restaurant is not for those seeking to avoid meat and potatoes, but if you enjoy a hearty meal with real food and a taste of the old country, there is no where else in town where you will find a greater value.
