For the 6th consecutive time, I've had a horrible meal at Martins. I really want to like this place, but they're making it extremely difficult.

I went to Martins shortly after they opened up the new place. The first time I ate there, it was a religious experience. EVERYTHING was amazing (well, except the brisket, which was dry as hell: harbinger of things to come). The next few times the food was just as good.

For the past 3 months however, everything I get there has been putrid. If you get any "pulled meat" products, be sure to have a gallon of fluids handy. The food is so dry, it gets lodged in my esophagus. The pulled pork, chicken and turkey must be days old whenever I get it, because it's more like "chopped Naugahyde" than anything that's been pulled with a fork.

When it's on, the food here is fantastic. The problem is erratic customer volume must dramatically affect the product. They certainly know how to smoke meat, but they can't seem to have it fresh when you want it. I've tried early in the day, late in the day, during rushes, etc. It's just hit or miss, and usually miss.

I understand that it is difficult to have fresh smoked meats ready at all times of the day, but if the quality is not there, simply inform the customer that you're out of the product, rather than serve up whatever chipped shoe-leather you've got on hand.

The quality of the food here is just too inconsistent to warrant chancing more than a few bucks on sandwich.

If timing is the problem, then anyone in the know, please inform us of a time of day/week when the meat is fresh. Otherwise, my working assumption will be that the meat is days old.

Saw Martin's on the show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We're not typically influenced by television shows, but the Redneck Taco inspired us to visit. Stopped by mid-afternoon on a Saturday, the place was relatively busy for 3 pm.

While many City Search reviewers posted about the rude service, the man taking our order was very friendly, no complaints. We ordered a 1/4 chicken with baked beans and fries and a pulled pork Redneck Taco. The chicken had a wonderful smoky flavor with a thousand island style dipping sauce. The sauce alone was nothing extraordinary, but the chicken dipped in the sauce made for a wonderful flavor palate. The beans were great, not your typical syrupy baked beans, but a nice thick sauce with cumin (i think), and chunks of green peppers and ham/fat thoughout. Fries had a good flavor but were soggy - sogginess is what I have come to expect from "fresh cut" fries (as Martin's advertises them), however I probably won't order them again.

The Redneck Taco was wonderful - smoky moist pork, sweet vinegary slaw, spicy thick bbq sauce and a delicious sweet cornmeal pancake. Tasted individually, the slaw and sauce were a bit overwhelming, but eaten as a bite they made for another impressive flavor palate.

Glad we were not swayed by many of the negative reviews we read. Looking forward to visiting Martin's again!

Pros: Casual, reasonable prices, great flavor palates, kitchy

Cons: None

Worst service of any restaurant I've been to. They have a haughty attitude and change their menu to screw you on prices. I ordered a chicken tenders basket. A basket used to come with fries. No longer though. When I asked the waitress, "Where are the fries?", she replied with, "We don't do that anymore!" in a rude way. Who serves a basket with just chicken tenders and no fries. Obviously, it's these buttholes.

Pros: Decent Food

Cons: They know how to turn that smile upside down

Hungry in Nolensville -- well, keep on driving down the road to a decent restaurant... Forget this place ! It is OVER-PRICED and even charges 25 cents for a glass of water. The staff is rude, unprofessional and must be "family" or they wouldn't have a job with their level of customer service. Thought the staffing problem would improve with the new location, but this has only added a sense of arrogance to the equation. Had burnt meat as well. Wouldn't eat there again if it were FREE.

I grew up in the deep deep South and I know good barbeque. I went to this place because I am a fan of Diners, Drive Inns and Dives this barbeque joint was highlighted on the show. Typically Guy is right on point. This one fell way short Guy, what were you thinking? I did not order the "Redneck Taco". Perhaps if I had my experience would have been better. Really disappointed.

I drove thru with the little one for convenience...wrong! After 24 minutes wait and only a few things still available off the entire menu, we were shorted part of our order! The little one got chicken fingers (they had run out of her first two choices). She couldnt eat them because they were overcooked in old grease that needed changing, and they were highly peppered. I had a pork sandwich that was overcooked and flavorless. Thats the third bad experience of three tries. I'm done.

I tried this place on 3/31/10 because of good reviews on this site. But the BBQ was awful. Mushy, tasteless, no smoked flavor at all. If you are used to west Ky BBQ you will hate this. The baked beans did taste good, but soupy. And the BBQ, fries(not good), and beans with a cola were about $12. In west KY the same plate with wonderful meat would have been $6.

Since the place moved into its new digs (which are gorgeous), the food is better...but still erratic. Two weeks ago the brisket was to die for...it was just perfect. Last night it was gristly and fatty....very fatty. They need to stop being so rushed with the person cutting the meat needing to look at it carefully and see if they would want to eat it. I will give the place one more chance, but if it comes out that way ever again, I am done with them.

Cons: Brisket was horrible last night.

I'm sure their brisket is fine, but Sugar's Ribs in Chattanooga will steal you away with theirs.
Theirs is chopped so it keeps all the flavors in the meat. The first bite is mouthwatering and it only gets better from there. As a traveler who has had it even in Texas, Sugar's brisket is top notch- the best!!!

The beef brisket was great..very tender. Girlfriend had the ribs, a little dry...but still good. But the sides were fair at best and the cornbread was disappointing, it was a cornbread pancake, not the cake you expect. Atmosphere was as advertised, a joint, which is where you usually find the best bbq.

This is the best BBQ I've found during an eight year search in the greater Nashville area. If I walk in a BBQ joint and smell liquid smoke I turn around and walk out. I'm originally from West Tennessee and we know good BBQ.
If you can find better BBQ anywhere in the mid-state let me know and I'll go check them out. Nuff said.

Went yesterday for the first time and had the rib basket and brisket plate. No sides, no desserts. Just going for the products of the smoker. I've been known to throw a brisket on the smoker every once in a while so I thought I knew a little something about the craft. People...this is something else entirely. I mean, this is like a revelation of what a human being can do with a smoker. Really, why put 20 hrs into a cut of meat when you can get a top quality steak in under 20 minutes? Just to say you cooked it for 20 hrs as if the cooking time itself was some sort of accomplishment? Not at all. Yet that's all a lot of BBQ places seem to have going for them. Yesterday at Martin's was like hearing an answer from on high, and all I could say was, "Oh...I see. That's why we do what we do when we BBQ." Truly, this is inspirational food from an inspired crew.

We have been looking for a good barbecue place, and we found it. My husband had heard good things about Martin's and we decided to give it a try. We loved the pulled pork, very tender and a wonderful flavor. Love the bbq sauce. We got the ketchup based one. Delicious, The hot sauces was nuclear just as described to us. The brisket was very well done and cooked. Everything was cooked fresh for us and hot. Great prices as well. We will definitely be back and will get more next time!

I LUV Ribs. And after reading all the hype about Martins, we made the trek down there. I ordered Ribs and Wings, and the rest ordered pull pork. The pork was average, and the ribs and wings were SLATHERED in sauce. Have never seen that much sauce in my life. Took 'em home and wiped it off and it tasted better. Could see where it had potential, but certainly not worth the drive to find out again.

I am a competitive bbq cooker, and that makes me very critical of bbq joints. In competition cooking it is all about consistency, and by far Martin's is the most consistent bbq place in Middle Tennessee. If you have ever tried to cook a brisket, you will be amazed at how Pat Martin can create a juicy, moist, and flavorful brisket every time. As a bbq connoisseur and even a certified bbq judge, I highly recommend a trip out to Martin's.

Martin's BBQ Joint has pretty good BBQ but could improve my serving hot meat instead of lukewarm. The BBQ has a great southern taste and being from Memphis, I know how it should be. However, the side items are terrible. Get some new ones, Patrick! The fries are nasty! Keep up the good work but maybe have some "local Nolensville Nights" for the locals to come in and enjoy the food. Maybe a special or two.

This is the first review I've ever written. But, after visiting Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint, I felt inclined to do so. I have travelled all around the great state of TN to find the best BBQ and my search has ended. I am a certified Kansas City BBQ Society judge so I tend to hold my expectations to a higher level. Martin's met and exceeded that level. Upon my first visit, I ordered ribs, brisket and pulled pork. On my second and thrid visits, I tried the half chicken as well as the bologna sandwich. Reviews below:
* Ribs: Tender, great color and hickory flavoring.
* Brisket: This is the hardest piece of meat to cook because of the muscle content. Martin's perfected it. Tender and moist with a great bark.
* Pulled Pork: Excellent. Tender, moist and just the right amount of smoke.
* Half Chicken: Juicy and the right amount of smoke....chicken is easy to oversmoke but Martin's prepared perfectly.
* Bologna Sandwich: This was my favorite. The piece must have been close to an inch thick!
* Beans: Could have used more seasoning.
* Fries: A must try! Hand cut potatoes.

I will be back most Saturdays to sip on an ice-cold beer and enjoy the best BBQ around.

This place is great. THe smoked wings are excellent, so it the pulled pork. I sometimes get it to go, heat in the oven a few days later. The sauce is teriffic. So are the fries. Everything they have is great. We have been there 10 times or more now because it's addicting, and it's well worth venturing out to Nolensville. The only negative is that they often run out of items on the menu, which is frustrating when you drive 20 miles to get there. I have been there twice when they are out of wings. They also have ettouffee on the menu, which we have asked for 10 times. It was only available once, though because I guess they only make it sometimes, Anyone in food service should know that's not acceptable. But overall, this place is excellent.

I wrote that last year. Since then, we have been back 5 times. Each time, it has gotten worse. This weekend, we went there an ordered ribs, pulled pork, and fries. Once again, I wanted coconut cake. They said they didn't have any desserts because Mr. Martin's wife was having a baby. While I can understand that, it's not a reason to let quality go out the window. If you have something on the menu, then make it. If you don't have it, take it off the menu. Also, the pork was room tempreature. Obviously, they are just setting it out somewhere. That's gross. The ribs were awful. They have started ordering cheap meat, and they were full of little tiny tubes. They were inedible. The fries were not the same as last year. I don' t think they make them by hand anymore, and the serving was small. The serving size of pork was about a tablespoon. Obviously, even though their prices are going up, their portions are going down. And so is their quality...with all the shortcuts. If I were nearby, I might not eat it again. And we used to drive 20 miles to eat at Martin's. It used to be good. Now it's average at best. I would rather go to Jim n' Nicks since I will know what I am getting each time.

I saw the Tennessean and channel 4 reviews on this small rib joint place. I decided to do lunch there last thursday. I was expoecting this greasy spoon type of place, and it was packed full of people. As a rib guy, I was excited to order the half rac od ribs with a pulled pork sandwich. The sauce on the ribs was tangy enough to satisfy my barbque needs. The meat was so well cooked it fell right off the bones. The pulled pork sandwich was amazing and could of stood as a full meal all by itself. The was so much food i took osme home for lunch the next day. Guess what? Just as good the next day. If you have a pulse and a heartbeat, go eat at this place now!!!

I expect that with all the press and such they will be busy, but it is worth the wait, even if you pick it up and take it home.

You know, sometimes when you hear about a restaurant, you are disappointed when you go because the hype has built the place up to the point that no place could live up to the hype. I read the tennessean review, the top 13 recommendation, and all that. I have eaten bbq in kansas city at a place called the wabash that had spare ribs that talked to you... Well I drove down from Bowling Green to taste for myself and the ribs ROCK. I had a full slab with cornbread and baked beans and I will be coming back... I tried to talk to Pat after my meal , but he was catering. So Pat, you are the man. Keep it up, cause although I don't know the lady you named your smoker after, I'm sure she would be proud.

I have been eating and cooking bbq for a very long time and this is as good as I've ever had. It seems as if the more popular bbq becomes and the more places that open up the farther they get away from the real thing. Really GREAT bbq joints are getting harder and harder to find (for folks who have an experienced palate for it). The sandwich I had with sides (fries & cornbread) was just amazing. The meat by itself brought a proud smile to my face. I talked with the owner after my meal and was really impressed by the care and passion he had for his product, it is very refreshing to see that! This was some of the best bbq I have had the pleasure of eating and really look forward to a return visit. I would highly recommend you find this place and experience it, Martin's is amazing! Oh, and it is very reasonable. My sandwich with two sides and a drink was $7.64 (with tax!)

I have been eating and cooking bbq for a very long time and this is as good as I've ever had. It seems as if the more popular bbq becomes and the more places that open up the farther they get away from the real thing. I've eaten bbq in at least 14 states. Chris ranks among my top 4 pork smokers. Only the sauce keeps me from rating Martin's 5-stars. Sauces and rubs are important to me. (I know, I know... purists don't care about the sauce... so I guess that disqualifies me as a bbq purist!) Rating his bbq and menu sides alone, based strictly on quality and flavor of the meat, I give Martin's a 5. Work on the sauces, Chris, but I'm still a BIG fan!

I'm a bit picky (okay... REALLY picky) about my barbecue. Pork is of course the only "real" barbecue but my measure of a great smoke chef is the quality of his beef brisket. If you can BBQ a good brisket, you likely have the rest down pat. Patrick's beef brisket is hands down the best I've ever had the pleasure to taste. Even though my weakness is spare ribs, I have rarely ordered anything but the brisket. (Have I said how much I like the brisket???) The ribs are always a big treat and the pulled pork is so tender (and I DON'T mean overcooked and reheated!) it almost melts in your mouth.

The sauces are excellent too. Pat's mild sauce is sweet, delicious and for wussies. The hot sauce gives wussies a reason to laugh at red faces. It is HOT but doesn't linger too long or overpower the taste of the smoke. Thumbs up in my book. I'd recommend the hot sauce on the side 'til you get a taste of it. A few friends didn't and it was too hot for their taste.

All of the sides I've tried are good. I'm a mustard guy when it comes to potato salad but this is dang good! I usually get a double order. The corn cakes are great as well as the slaw and pecan pie. I'll have to assume the rest is as good as what I've had so far... 'til I try it all, that is!

Did I say the brisket is fantastic????

Definitely worth the 20 minute drive. So what are you waiting for???? GO!!! NOW!!!

Patrick and the staff are so friendly - they remember you when you come back and really make you feel like part of the family. Have you ever been somewhere and found yourself thinking "I'd be friends with these guys" - but you'd never met. That's the way it is at Martin's. It's not like going to a restaurant, but it's like you're kickin back at a big ole family reunion! A GOOD ONE!

You meet all kinds of folks when you're there - songwriters, ball players, attorneys, farmers, businessmen, chefs, construction workers... it's literally a place where everyone can connect, and everyone become equal. Good BBQ has no bias when it comes to people, but good people choose Martin's BBQ! :)

Check out some of our "tops" writers at myspace/catch23kaci - and come out Saturday night for dinner!!

Cons: I haven't found any yet. Oh - it's closed on Mondays - that stinks!

An Oasis in the Country. This joint is well worth the drive from anywhere. You will not go away hungry and you will not go away without a smile. The people are a 10 and the food is a 13. The brisket plate is the best and the hot sauce, she is hottt. I will never be inside 25 miles and not stop in. Bring the kids and an empty tummy and SHAKE it to the live music on Saturday Night. It will not be long until there are Martin's BBQ joints all over the map. This is the best BBQ outside of Memphis and inside Kossuth, MS. Make the drive to Martins in Nollensville, TN. You will be glad ya did.

MAKE SURE YOU STOP INTO MARTIN'S BAR B QUE JOINT WHEN IN THE NASHVILLE AREA. THEEE BEST BRISKET YOU HAVE EVER TASTED. IT LITERALLY MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF BRINGING THE ENTIRE BAND IN THERE RECENTLY WHILE IN TOWN FOR SOME RECORD BUSINESS. IT WAS AN INSTANT SMASH! BEATS THE HECK OUT OF ALL THE OTHER BBQ'S IN AND AROUND TOWN. GREAT FOOD, FRIENDLY SERVICE. 2 THUMBS UP!

Live in the Belmont/Lipscomb area of Nashville and have been looking for good bbq since moving to Nashville 9 years ago. This place was a bit of a "haul" (I dont usually venture very far from Nashville) but it came highly recommended from some buddies of mine. I'll have to say that this place was AWSOME! I was very impressed and cant recommend it enough. It is the best bbq in the area and I'll have no problem making the drive. My girlfriend had the "shrimp po-boy" that had this tobasco/lime something mayo sauce on it that was beyond belief! Definetly check this place out.

Slap-yo-momma Good! This is the best BBQ I have eaten in a resturant, and I have eaten a great deal of BBQ growing up in North Carolina and attend college and residing in Tennessee. I have never tasted such slow-cooked, deep and rich BBQ. The atmosphere is simple...just good BBQ seems to be the message here. I had the brisket plate, BBQ taco and a bite of the BBQ pork. I was skeptical of the BBQ taco but it was probably my favorite with the HOT BBQ sauce. I have been telling people everywhere about this place and will continue to do so. I will not at all be surprised if this little joint doesn't appear in the "Best of the South" listing in the near future.

I've grown up here in Tennessee. When I used to think of BBQ, I would think of Whitts or Bar-B-Cutie. That was the case until I found this joint. Not only is it a killer hang out, but the food is too good for words. I mean it! I'd have to add a sound bite to this review for you to understand! It's not close to where we live, but it only took one meal to make us forget about the distance. Now we eat there at least once a week. By now we've had just about everything on the menu. Here are a few of our favorites:

Brisket Tacos, BBQ 1/2 Chicken, Pork Plate/Brisket Plate and last but definitely not least, THE REDNEK TACO!

A buddy of mine recommended this little bbq joint in Nolensville TN. I decided to check it out and I was blown away. As I walked in, creaking of the door was replaced by Johnny Cash?s life-leathered voice. As I ordered from the window, Daisy Duke seduced me. All this was followed up with a taste-bud orga5m as I sunk into my first brisket taco. That being said, I guess you could say I would highly recommend Martin?s Bbq joint.

I grew up in the middle of BBQ country and now live in Orlando, FL. We made a stop in Nolensville to vist frieds for Easter and stopped by Martin's to eat. Let me tell you, Martin's BBQ is the best by far. The pork sandwich is great and made me homesick. It's hard to find this kind of BBQ quality in Middle Tennessee, and this place delivers. We'll make the stop through Nolensville again just to eat there.

when you can smell the smoke before you see the joint, you know the q will be worth the wait - and Martins does not dissapoint. The brisket tacos are great and take second place only to the traditional pulled pork sandwich with the vinegar based sauce. I also highly recommend pairing either with a side of hand cut fries and cold Sweetwater Ale....

i'm kind of a bbq freak and have to eat at any new place that comes along......this is the best i've had in nashville. the line to order was a little annoying but the food was really worth it, which i guess explains the long line that annoyed me in the first place. i had heard about it on roadfood (the website) then the food critic from the Tennessean did the article on it raving about it so i had to drive out there to check it out. i had a regular pork sandwich with slaw, fries and a coke, i chose the vinegar based sauce to go on it. i saw ribs, catfish sandwich, brisket tacos, etc. go out the window and they all looked very good. i highly recommend taking the drive out there to this place.....its seriously by far the best ive had anywhere around nashville.

Great bbq and friendly service!
I have been wanting to try this new restaurant for a while now, and after reading the recent review in the Living section of the Tennessean I could wait no longer. My family and I loaded up and travelled on out to Nolensville to see what al the fuss is about; I ordered the brisket and fries, my wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich with potato salad, my son ordered the ribs with cornbread and we also ordered a dozen chicken wings. We all tried something different so we could share and taste each item; I am not exaggerating when I say that everything we ate was off the chain! I am already looking forward to the next time we can take a trip to Martin's...it was worth every penny!

I had heard a lot about this place and then I read about it in the paper. My husband and I were out on a weekend adventure. I got hungry for BBQ. We passed 3 BBQ places to check this one out. I am so glad we did. It is a ways from where we live but OH MY was it worth the drive!!! Our first visit was a few Saturday nights ago. The smell outside the place is sooo good! We got in and the place was amazingly family friendly. After talking to the guy taking orders about suggestions (which happened to be the owner-a real laid-back, friendly guy) we made up our minds. My husband not crazy about BBQ had a hamburger-yummy. They cooked it just like he likes it. Not how they wanted it. He also had a paper cone full of chips. Crazy but good. I heard that they cut there own fries. They looked good. Next time. I had brisket tacos. I know that sounds wierd but I had to try it. I am so glad I did. The potato salad tasted good but the baked beans were out of this world. I wish I could go there now. When we went they had a "band". One guy on guitar and one pickin' on a banjo. Fortunately, they could play and sing. They had people of all ages in the place - from babies to folks on walkers. The stuff on the walls is worth the trip alone. I am heading back there this weekend. I hope you do to so a great tasting not mediocore bbq joint stays in business. This place has flavor!

This is BBQ the way it was meant to be! The pulled pork is the best I've ever had! The slaw is just right - not too much mayo. The ribs are outstanding - and I don't usually care much for ribs. Take the kids! They have a full kid's menu with plenty of choices. Martin's is definitely worth the drive to Nolensville!

I'm from a small town outside of Memphis and this is the best BBQ by far I've found in Nashville. The brisket is outstanding and the everyone should try the Brisket Chilli. If you're in Nolensville on a Saturday night, stop by and check out the music and have a bucket of Fall City beer.

I have lived in the Middle-TN area since 1996, have eaten BBQ all over the South, and I can assure you there is NO BETTER BBQ ANYWHERE, PERIOD!!! From the pulled pork, to the ribs, to the brisket, it is simply the best BBQ you can get!!

The atmosphere is incredible--The southern beauty Daisy Duke over the counter, Waylon, Willie, and Cash on the walls, it just can't be beat.

One of the best beer selections anywhere, from your standard Coors, Bud, and Miller, you also get PBR, Strohs, and Falls City--TRUE CLASSICS!!!

I'm not a die-hard bbq fan, but I have to say that I will certainly take the time to drive out to Martin's BBQ Joint for the ribs. If you are a vegetarian, you might want to quit reading....the meat is so tender and tasty. The sauce is incredibly good, and I think I could eat these for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Other menu items I've had, especially the brisket, is outstanding. I would highly recommend taking a field trip to Nolensville to try it out. The atmosphere is very relaxed - and if you go on Saturday, you can catch some good tunes. I personally haven't been able to listen to the music yet, but I hear very good things about it as well.

A little bit out there, but worth it. The atmosphere is the best around outside of Robert's in downtown Nashville- you can take a gander of pictures of waylon, cash and the duke boys while you scarf down some tasty BBQ and a blue collar beer of your choice(big ups for serving PBR and Old Style). I ate the ribs and was fairly surprised, ribs are actually tough to get right- and they were better than any of the standard fare at Chilis or O'Charleys(but, maybe not as good as Famous Dave's). The beans were spicy and oh so tasty. The cost was very reasonable as well. Get a license to serve Jack Daniel's and get some hot waitresses- this place could be hotter than sunburn.

The best BBQ I've had in middle TN and pretty much anywhere. It's a true "joint" from the PBR and Fall City in cans to the Dukes of Hazzard gameboard hung on the wall. I suggest the "Brisket Tacos" with a PBR and a moonpie.

The BBQ pork and sauces are excellent as is the brisket (and I'm not much of a brisket fan). All the sides are great, especially the potato salad. There's lots to choose from on the menu, so if you're not a BBQ fan you'll have plenty of alternatives. I hear the etouffee is good. Of course, the icing on the cake (or moon pie) is the excellent domestic beer selection: in addition to the usual Bud and Coors products there's PBR, Old Style, and Stroh's. The service is always perfect and friendly.

Martin's is a fun place to eat...lots of entertaining decor...and is good for all ages. Bottom line: I pass 20 BBQ joints on the way from my home in Mt. Juliet to Nolensville to get the best in Middle Tennessee at Martin's.
