I had a service call because the heat quit working on my downstairs unit. The "serviceman" arrived, Very friendly and Overly talkative. He checked out the unit and informed me with a sad shake of his head that the heat exchanger was bad. He told me it would cost $1380 to replace it, but that the overall unit was in such bad shape that I would be wasting my money to fix it... I should have them install a new unit for me. My unit is only four years old, and the part itself is still under warranty, so the $1380 is labor only! He then goes into this diatribe about all the time it takes for the office to order the part, pick up the part, return the old part, driving time, paper work, etc. ?It?s really about ten hours? and that is all part their charge? $1380! Back in the house now, he really turns on the sales pitch for me to make an appointment for one their ?comfort specialists? or whatever they call their first string salesmen, to come out and decide what kind of unit I?d like them to install. I thought he?d never leave. I just stood there not responding to anything he said. He?d ask me something, and I?d just stare at him. Finally I asked if he had some paperwork he needed me to sign, and sent him on his way. So then I called about five other places and asked what they charge to replace an in warranty heat exchanger on my unit. They range from $375 to $600. I go with the cheapest, which happens to be the company that I always used at one of my past homes, and always had great service from? Lee Company. Their service tech came out, replaced the part. It took about an hour and a half. I told him the experience I?d had with One Hour Heat and Air, and he just kind of shook his head and chuckled. He handed me the invoice, and it was less than they quoted me on the phone. I can?t remember exactly, but it was $350 or less. I will use Lee Company from now on. Always. It saddens me to think of the people that fall for these tactics? especially older folks.
