Tried my first Bento box today and it was a nice change. I must say everything was tasty to my surprise. I have tired 3 other Japanese restaurants here in Nashville. This is by far the best. I am sure I will return to try more dishes.

Pros: nice veriety and fast service

Cons: server wasn't very helpful when i was trying to order

I have been going to Sonabona (AKA Benkay) for seven years now. I have tried more than twenty Japanese restaurants and this one is by far my favorite. It is close to home and the sushi rolls are affordable. For the cooked rolls, I have to say the the Rebecca and Mistake rolls are the best. For the fresh raw rolls, I love the Johnson roll and Tennessee. Ofcourse, the spicy crunchy shrimp is delicious too.

Pros: best sushi rolls in town

Cons: tea is no longer free, the salad bowls are too old

It is almost impossible to find a Japanese restaurant in Nashville and surrounding counties that are actually owned and operated by real Japanese. Sushi is made by chefs that were formally trained, and you can tell by the way the sushi stays together when you pick it up with your chopstick to dip it into the soy sauce. Unlike Chinese owned sushi restaurants, the rice isn't smelly and pasty either. As far as the other foods, I can probably make them better with the exception of tempura, but I still stop and eat lunch here when I do my grocery shopping next door. Great place to stop when I don't feel like cooking.

Pros: Japanese comfort foods

I have been going to this restaurant since it was called Benkay and I was in high school some 15 years ago. I am disappointed to see it slipping away the way it is. I just don't understand it. They are always busy, no matter when I go. When I dined there this week, I saw a server fix a seat with duct tape. Their servers are for the most part new and just don't have what the ones of the past did. It's often my drink goes unfilled for quite some time. The food is fantastic, but the portions of teriyaki just keep getting smaller. I would comment on their sushi, but I'm no connoisseur. I'll only say that I have no complaints. The avocado is fresh. The seaweed is not chewy. The rice is perfect. I hate to write this as I absolutely adore it and still go at least once a week, if not more.

At the store next door we always buy some to keep in the house for salads! Thier service is always really good, even on really busy nights! I go there so often they know my name!! Pros: great service, awesome food, parking is good (all the way to target!)

Cons: waiting area

A few years back, Sonobana was known as Benkay, but they changed the name. The food is still wonderful and reasonably priced. Their to-go cannot be beat--ready on time, packaged, and hot (just remember to bring your own tupperware for the udon). They recently redid the tatami floors of the private dining area and smoking is way in the back--roomy, but the smoke does not escape. Huge fan of the sushi bar, bento boxes, teriyaki, geso kara age (fried squid), cutlets, and their salad dressing is out of this world. Parking can get a little cramped, but it's a wide open lot that stretches all the way to Target. You'll never be without a spot. Service is good, and I've never waited longer than 15 minutes for a table, even on a Friday night. Enjoy!

Cons: parking can get cramped, not a large waiting area

sonobana (which i believe used to be benkay's) has definately seen better days. on our last trip my husband and i didn't eat half of our food because it just wasn't good. the decor is dated, stained, and falling apart. the only redeeming quality was that the service was very good.
