I applied for an ECU fixed rate visa, and got approved. In the meantime, I was also checking on a loan I have already got with ECU (it was an unsecured signature loan), the first person I contacted was Sherry Jones to check on a loan modification because I qualified for a better interest rate on the unsecured loan. My rate currently is 15.95. The new rate that Sherry Jones quoted me for was 10.50. So I waited a couple of days for the loan modification, and never heard back from Sherry Jones, so I decided to call her. She answered and said she meant to call me but forgot to, that's when she informed me they do not do loan modifications on unsecured debt. That's when she advised me that I could refinance the loan to get a better rate, but they won't refinance it unless you borrow $1,000.00. That's when she told me I would have to call back, and do a loan application again. I don't understand why she couldn't do it while I was on the phone with her. I called back and talked to Susan (don't know last name), and she did the application and said she needed to speak to my wife to get her permission to add her to the loan. My wife called, left her a voicemail, we waited for Susan to respond back, and she never called. So I called her, that's when she said, "Let me check on it" and that's when she said the underwriter had made a counter-offer, and that they needed collatteral to redo the loan because of escalating debt. My wife and I have been with ECU for many years and have had many loans that have been paid off. We both feel that ECU is taking advantage of us by not honoring the new interest rate on the loan. All we wanted was the new rate not the $1,000 extra, that was there requirements to the new refinance. This has opened our eyes to start looking into financial institution before signing notes.

Everytime I call to try to fix a problem that they have caused they act like they do not care and refuse to escalate me to their manager. I do not call yelling or what have you, I just try to get my issue resolved while I am on the phone and want to understand exactly what has happened. The problems that I have had, which their staff (once they listen) do admit are not my fault, have cost me thousands of dollars and they truly do not care. It is almost as if they have a policy of not helping in these situations - I can't understand why, but it feels that way.

Pros: good rates

Cons: not a good credit union - literally the worst I've seen
