General Photographic Resources is not longer in business ~ the owner passed away after a battle with cancer. The Portrait Cafe is not, I repeat, is not General Photographic Resources - GPR. I called them myself to get this info. Yes, some of their previous employees work for this company (it's a small town) - but The Portrait Cafe is a totally different company. I wish people would check out the real facts -BEFORE posting bad information.

THEY HAVE NOW CHANGED THEIR NAME TO PORTRAIT CAFE...but it's still the same people running this scam of a business.

If it was possible to give 0 stars, that's what I would have rated them. 1 star is too many.

General Photographic (aka Portrait Cafe) was taking pictures for portrait packages at my son's daycare. We agreed to purchase a package for $184.21. We gave them our debit card information and over the next couple of weeks they debited our account seven different times for an amount of $238.78 cents - $54.57 over what we agreed to pay. Their guarantee was that the pictures would be delivered in 4-6 weeks. At this time it has been over 8 weeks and we have not received our pictures and The Portratit Cafe refuses to refund our money. They claim that General Photographic went out of business and it is not their problem. It is the SAME company using a different name, The Portrait Cafe, run by the SAME FAMILY. It was a father / daughter business, now an uncle has taken over and just changed the name - same equipment, same location. Horrible business.

My sons day care decided to try out this company, the pictures came a great but the service is just unacceptable.

First they where suppose to schedule appointments with individual parents, which they did not do, they just showed up at the day care.

The representative of the company was not very friendly or engaging at all.

I gave my check for the package that I picked on May 4, 2 days later I decided that I wanted to upgrade my package to the larger one so I informed the center director of that, which she passed the request on, from that moment on we have been told that someone will be contacting me so I can complete my upgrade, here we are June 2, 2010 and still no one from General Photographic Resources has contact me.

Today I left a detailed message and will see if they finally decide to respond. For the money that we as parents pay for these pictures the service should be prompt and outstanding.

Will I ever participate in using this company again? NO
Will I ever recommend to any friends/family/co workers to use this company? NO

When I read some of the comments here, I thought how screwed I was going to be when my pictures came in. One of the poses was not right; one of my kids had his yuk-face on. I knew I would not have picked that pose for the enlargements I bought.

Then I called the company no one answered. All I got was to leave a voice mail message that someone will get back with me. Yeah right, I was thinking Screwed Again! Then I started reading some of the comments posted and just knew that there was no hope. Well, Debbie Smith called me from their company and apologized for the delay in calling ?? I was blown away.

I told her the whole story that I would never order a pose looking like that. She said that she would look into it and call me the next day. I thought, yeah right, again. She did call me back and said she had looked at the pictures and the original paperwork and said it was their mistake, some kind of clerical error.

Debbie said that she could post them on-line, but that it might take a few days for the request to be completed. She then asked me if I had access to a fax machine, which I did. She took my number and went straight to the fax machine and sent all the poses so I could tell her which one was the right pose.

I called her back, and faxed the pose I wanted back. She said they were reprinting everything I had received of the wrong pose and that it would take 2-3 weeks to get them. My photos arrived and I am relieved that what I thought was going to be a nightmare came out all right. For all of you with problems, Debbie said just call her and she??ll fix it.

I was really angry when I opened my box of framed portraits and found one of the frames broken. I spent over $200 and waited 5 weeks, so, that plus having told both Grandmothers about how cute the pictures were, well, I was banging angry. I called the number on my receipt and was more frustrated that I could not reach a live person in Customer Service.

After about 3-4 attempts, I finally left my number and thought this is going nowhere fast. You can imagine how surprised I was when a girl called me back and listened to me raised sand?poor girl.

Like I said, I was bang angry. She assured me that they would fix the problem and were sending FedEx Express to pick up the damage frame and pictures to return them.

Bigger than life, about 2 weeks later here cane the picture box from them and ta-da! No problem, fixed frame.

I have given two of these to the grandmother and I am happy to have a copy of the sweetest baby on earth on my wall at home.

So, mad at first; happy now.

Whatever you do, avoid this company at all costs. They will drive you crazy calling you "before" you have your photos taken, then forget it, you will not be able to talk to them again. Our PTO used them for a fundraising project in Feb. and we were promised a corporate match on funds and a $150 sign on bonus. We haven't seen a dime, but they did quite well financially from our hard working families. You can't speak to a real person when you call customer service, only leave messages and no one will call you back. I wish that i had done more research before I subjected our parents to this deceptive company. They have 51 complaints with the Better Business Bureau, well now 52 if you add mine. This company is a joke!

General Photographic Resources has the best customer service. My son's photographs were taken in October 2009 and came out great. At the beginning of January 2010, my apartment building burnt down and I lost everything. I called GPR to see if I could get copies of the photographs that I lost and they were able to print the whole package for me without any problems. The package was reprinted and sent to me in a timely manner.

I would recommend GPR to any parent that has kids in daycare. The photographs were great and the customer service was outstanding after a family tragedy.

Thank you General Photographic Resources for everything.

Our group scheduled a program with General Photographic Resource last Fall of 2009. We were all excited about the offer and sold over 83 gift cards throughout our little community.

One week before the photography was to arrive for the pictures - a selling member was online and stumbled on city search website and read some of the reviews posted by other customers. When she read me the comments I panicked to say the least. I immediately call my G.P.R marketing representative to express my concerns. He assured me everything would be alright.

He stated that G.P.R last year alone served over 76,000 customers, and it was their mission to try and make everybody happy, but sometimes that goal was unreachable. He encouraged me to go to the Better Business Bureau website to get a true picture of G.P.R track record. Well, reluctantly we went ahead with the program and everything turned out o.k.

We had 2 delivery problems, but both were solved to be satisfaction of our customers. I would not hesitate to recommend G.P.R to any group who is looking for a good fundraiser.

We had this photo company come to our center in VA around November with promises of beautiful pictures, what a bad experience. We are use to dealing with picture companies however, this one should not be allowed to operate. Once the viewing date came the woman was rude and took too long and many parents walked out. The free pictures looked like they were printed off a home copy machine from the 1970's, very grainy with a muted color. We made no big deal about this because hey they were free! However, when parents recieved their overpriced photos they paid for which were also of a very low quality people were upset. I called for two weeks before any one spoke to me. Oh and she weaved a nice little lie that any family could call and they would make it right. They wanted families to give all their crappy photos back, every single one or their would be not refund. The knew they had us right there because the pictures came a few days before Xmas and since many parents did not take photos any where else they were expecting these for the holidays and even though they were disappointed they gave some out. So much deception, lies and bad business. I truly hope that everyone who crosses paths with this company turns them into the Better Business Burea so that something can be done about it. As a daycare director I was very embarrased about this event! It is very easy to turn them in, just do a search for the better business website, you can type in their name and it will come up and yes they already have many other complaints, I hate for anyone else to be in this situation! Would not give any stars but I had to do one, I wish I could give none!!!

I am the director of a childcare center in Cookeville, Tn and we used this company thinking the parents would be getting good quality professional pictures before Christmas...we were wrong. The representatives of this company were RUDE to me, parents, and other teachers. Many parents did not receive the pictures they purchased. They were WAY over priced for what we got. We cannot get in touch with anyone from the company to remedy this situation. We have left numerous messages and cannot get in touch with anyone... only recordings! So FRUSTRATING! We did not receive our framed portraits. The quality of the pictures were HORRIBLE!
I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone! Even if they offered FREE pictures for everyone...they are an UNPROFESSIONAL company and do not know how to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
If you are considering this company...take everyone's advice... DON"T DO IT!

They are not worth the 1 star rating.

I am the Director at Imagination Station Daycare in WV. I have never dealt with a company like this before, and I will be calling the Better Business Bureau to report their business practices. The photographer was extremely rude..to parents as well as myself. He did end up apologizing to me but he embarrassed me in front of parents at our center. The company cancelled twice before finally making it to our center. To compensate, they offered all of our parents free Christmas cards. We were guaranteed Christmas delivery...the photos came on Dec. 22....three days before Christmas. Impossible to send out the Christmas cards! But the worst part is that many parents purchased specially framed portraits for Christmas gifts...none of the framed photos came in. There was a tiny note that read,"framed photos will follow in 7-10 days". Unbelievable! I have so my unhappy parents, which reflects badly on me. We were also entitled to $5.00 for each package that was viewed by a parent...haven't heard anything about that yet. And by the way....you will NEVER,NEVER get through to a real, live person on their phone lines. Don't even bother leaving a message, they won't call back!
I am very unsatisfied with this company and will pursue legal action if neccessary. I wish I would have read all the other "bad" reviews before using this company.
They don't even deserve "1" star

I just received my PICTURE today. I bought a package as part of a fundraiser. I was supposed to receive an 8x10, 2 5x7s and 8 wallets, what came in the mail was an 8x10 only. The picture is of horrible quality, the faces are blury/distorted. I just tried calling the number listed in the yellow pages for General Photography Resources and it is a wrong number. After reading the other reviews on this site it doesn't surprise me. I would not recommend this company to anyone and will not use it again!!

From the beginning this company was nothing but a headache. They are impossible to get a hold of, take forever to call back, extremely disorganized, sloppy with their work..... My child had the flu the day of the viewing for the pics so I called the company. It took me days to reach them. When I finally did reach them, they told me they couldn't locate my child's pics unless I got the account number from the school and my child's sititng number. I managed to get the info even though I felt it was them who should have done the leg work for that. After giving them the info, it took a week for me to reach them again after hearing nothing back. They said they located my daughter's pics and would put it on their online gallery. I was given the website address and the password which they said would be my first name. It took me an hour to find the website because it was given to me WRONG. I double checked with the woman who gave it to me and she left out the "dot" that goes in the address. When I finally get the address right, i enter the password which is supposed to be my name....my name which she correctly spelled out for me online. Well, the password was spelt INCORRECTLY! Again I spent forever trying to intentionally mispell my name just to log in. When I finally did log in, and viewed the picture, IT WAS NOT MY CHILD!! It takes me yet another week to reach them again and when I do, I tell them that isn't my kid. They took ANOTHER 2 WEEKS and said they corrected it and put up her pic. I go back to the website and again, NOT MY KID!! I call them again, ask them to check what they're doing, verify everything, they said they changed it a 3rd time and so I go to the website, and can't log in! They changed the password! I give up, they are a terrible company, rude, unprofessional, sloppy work, no customer service...... I've told everyone I know.... never again.

My experience with this company was horrible and I want something to happen. I like others who have posted reviews am a single MOM who just wanted some nice pictures of her kids. The pictures looked neat and I was supporting the RELAY 4 Life fundraiser so I purchased one. My mother died of cancer so I was doing something important while getting what I thought would be good pictures but I was in for it. I only get paid twice a month, and asked the rep who came in to make sure that money goes out on the days I was paid. He was like oh yea, it will. I juggle a job and two small children so I excepted that be honored. The payments came out first 9 days after it should have causing an overdraft, (before the end it had happen twice) So I contacted them, it took them 3 days to respond to my call and a week to respond to my email. The email was very unprofessional, words were misspelled and there was no type of capitalization or punctuation. I gave the the information requested and it took another week to respond, and by that point I had already contacted someone else. I finally was contacted today, and was RUDELY told it was my fault over and over again. This company is a complete rip off, the did not own up to anything. If the funds would have been pulled out on time, then I would have not had this problem. I had no time to make sure the payment came out I expected they honored what was agreed upon. All I got from it was it was my fault. I still have not received my pictures and have fellow co-workers who received pictures that were printed with the carpet from the floor showing instead of there sheet. This company is ridiculous, and if I don't get my pictures will go much further with this. I'm tired of companies like this taking advantage of the little people. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!

Pros: The photgrapher was the only nice person I met

Cons: Everything, customer service, the whole company

.

When our family sat down to preview, and pay for the package, there were beautifully framed pictures on display. We asked if this is what we would be receiving with our payment and were told yes. When the photos arrived much to our displeasure the photo that was on display was placed in a much cheaper frame, with cardboard backing, and a warped plastic facing. This is what is commonly referred to as the Bait and Switch play. Additionally they misprinted the name on the photo which is ridiculous considering our phone number was on the receipt in the event of any confusion. I agree with some of the other posts as well in that the sales people were pushy, the packages were extremely over priced and over-all I would say the company is a rip off and a scam. I would never recommend using their services again to anyone.

I am a Relay For Life team captain. When I was attending a Relay For Life meeting, we were told about the fundraiser that GPR was offering. So, I thought I would give it a try. This was the BEST and EASIEST fundraiser that I have ever done. Basically sold itself.
The marketing rep at GPR was wonderful. She was always cheerful and willing to assist me with any questions or concerns that I had.
The photographers were really great to work with. They got the customers in and out in a timely manner. They were friendly, knew what they were doing and there were no high pressure sells.
I am pleased with GPR and am looking forward to next years fundraiser. The pictures are1st rate, better than any pictures that I've seen.

Thank you so much for your courteous and professional service at the Eastern Shore Montessori School. The old fashioned monochrome style was perfect for the "Treasure from the Attic" theme. The added touch of color of certain objects stands out nicely and makes the photos look very well balanced. The '20's and 30's theme was also outstanding. we are very much enjoying sharing our photos and I am sure other student's families is doing the same.
Your photographers and sales people are very personable and professional. Jayme Strickland deserves special mention for her very accomodating nature.
I have also received very favorable feedback from "God's Living Sea" preschool@ Jubilee Baptist Church who scheduled their session after viewing our photos.
I wish you continued success and hope to do business with you again next year.

Sincerely,
Kate

First off GPR must have contracted out a lady that represented "Treasures in the Attic". When the idea of old-fashioned photos was presented to parents at Little Tyke , parents were excited about the idea. GPR argued that demographically the clientel at the Little Tyke in North Richland Hills, TX was 'too poor' and wouldn't pay for pix, which was an unresearched assumption as parents have paid for pix in the past! And from what I hear, there was a large turnout at this daycare. First off we paid "BEFORE" getting them, "packages" were steep and that includes ones so called 'marked down/on sale'. I spent over $200 and they not only took the max amt of delivery time, but when they were handed out, my child was mislabled and we were unable to locate the cd that copyright was released to me as part of my pkg due to GPR mislabeling/confusing orders. This is a very unorganized co. I also have yet to receive my matted and framed portrait I already paid for. This is nothing, read on. So many parents were unhappy, the director of the daycare takes it upon herself to call and complain on behalf of everyone including herself bc her pix were such poor quality for the $. Some poses of her kids were not centered , darker shades that others and extremely blurry and unprofessional. Some parents reviewed their free pkg and received more than what was advertised, some stated out loud that the wrong pose was used for the larger pix. Mine were of poor quality, blurry and fuzzy in resolution and none were centered. In fact, of the same pose, one side of my child's body was showing more than the other copy. Does this make sense? The customer service rep at GPR told the daycare dir that they will not take a mass complaint, and that "the rest of the parents probably wouldn't notice because our director just had a really good eye". You don't have to be a professional photog to know these could have been better developed at a local Walgreens! Not one parent has recieved a return call, I've left 1 message every day since 8/28/09 and no return phone call yet. I expect compensation or redevelopment of these and I want everything I paid for. I have yet to receive all items. Worst experience ever, please do NOT waste your money or TIME!!!

A local company used GPR to raise funds for Relay For Life (American Cancer Society). GPR told the company that a photographer would be there for 4 days where customers could book any of those days. In very fine print, that doesn't even come out if you get a faxed copy of the contract, it says that they only come out for as many bookings as were sold. I can understand this, but they truly led these people to believe it would be over the course of four days. When the company complained becasue the only day they would come was over a holiday weekend, GPR told them "Don't worry. People won't want there money back. It's for charity." HOW HORRIBLE!!! Well the company came down on the scheduled day and then said sorry we can't do it here the space is not adequate. They said they would call and reschedule, but never did. DON'T TRUST THIS COMPANY!!!

we had not planned on buying more than the 10 dollar package of pictures. the photographer done a great job with my little one and so i bought nearly 300 dollars worth of pictures. the 300 dollars did include custom framing and matting. i did not feel any pressure from the company to buy but i did feel a little bit rushed. after the photo shoot someone else helps you order your pictures and we had to wait for the family in front of us to get done ordering and my little one was getting tired and wanted to leave. we were told when we ordered that the pictures would take 6 weeks to arrive. mine didnt arrive by week 6 so i started calling the company and got the message to leave my info and they would call back. i really thought no one would call me back but after a week of trying i did finally get a call back. the lady was very very very very nice and we figured everything out. my pictures finally arrived and they were beautiful. the only problem is i did ask for color pictures and received the sephia brown color.however. i did receive a cd of every picture took of my little one and they were all in color.overall i wish it would have been cheaper and got here a lot sooner but other than that i am pleased with my purchase.

Our Mom bought the $10.00 coupons for each family in her family. She wanted the grandma's attic pictures of her grandchildren. The giftcard and brochure we received did not state that the first picture they snap (no exceptions) is what you get. They just snaped the first one, it didn't matter if the kids were looking, posed and much less smiling! Then the rest of the pictures turned out good. So unless you plan to spend $99.00 - $300.00 dollars they are very rude! Not to metion the fact that the customer service stinks too. Apparently they do not care if customers are pleased! Also since we were not willing to buy a big package they only gave us half as many pictures as the coupon we bought listed. These were done at a local church and we are going to make sure the rest of the churches in this area knows it is a SCAM!

ps. I had to give a rating so the one star I guess is for the photographer, she at least wasn't as rude.

I must admit I usually dread receiving a call from directory companies and dread even more, knowing the benefit of a directory, moving forward into such an endeavor. Your company is the fourth company I have used over the last eighteen years.

However, you and your personnel made this experience the most pleasant and non-stressful ever. The photographer was extremely friendly and moved people in and out without delays. The sales representative was thorough in presenting the picture packages yet without the feared sales pressure. The ??turn around time? in receiving the proof copy and final product was very satisfactory. Most of all, working with you and your staff was very delightful. You were always helpful and kind.

Jerry, if you ever need me to recommend or speak with other Pastors who may have had similar bad experiences with directory companies I would be glad to share our experience with GPR. I know the benefit of church directories but they are not often worth the hassle. But, with GPR there was no hassle and certainly, we are enjoying the benefits of our new directory! Thanks.

I would not recommend General Photographics to any of my family or friends. They were very over priced photos and the sales woman was very 'pushy'. The photographer rushed through taking the pictures of my child. They did not come out looking that great. Very unsatisfied and still they have no guaranty or I wouldn?t' be so upset!

The prices are way to high. The salesperson was very pushie when the parents said they did not like the pose. They would not let them pick out what the free poise that they wanted. The photographier was awful; he was not good with young children at all. The sales were way down compared to the last time they came to the center. There was only three types of wood you could choose from for the frames. They were really over priced and almost none of the children's pictures were worth buying due to the poor quality of photgraphy. Very unhappy with the whole company in its self. I do not recommend this company to anyone. They will not ever be back in our center.

I left a message a couple times and nobody call back.I don't recommended them, I will preffer to go to Waltmar before I go with them again.

After nearly 8 weeks of waiting on over $300 dollars worth of pictures I began trying to call the company to inquire why they were taking longer than the 4 weeks promised. You NEVER get a hold of a representative, only a recording. With them never calling back as promised in the recording I finally started asking around about other peoples pictures....the smaller (or general) packages have been delivered (or at least to those I have talked to) but DOZENS of us who ordered hundreds of dollars worth of pictures have not received anything....only a 4 that I know of have been lucky enough to even get a call back. 3 were informed their pictures were lost but not offered any hope of ever seeing them OR of getting a refund (THEY DO NOT REFUND UNDER ANY TERMS). And the 4th person was told her package was completely destroyed when sent from the printers to the framers (even though only 2 photos were to be framed) and told her they HOPED to get them reprinted this week. :( But she is already well aware she probably will never see them and a bunch of parents are talking about seeing if a joint legal complaint will at least get their money back. Please if your looking for a fund raiser do not use this site. Trust me, my school has a bunch of very angry parents and teachers to deal with right now. I myself am a single mother and certainly can not afford to GIVE AWAY $300 and receive nothing in return. I HAVE NEVER WROTE A REVIEW (much less a negative one) before in my LIFE. That is how seriously this company WILL rip you off.

We decided to go with GPR to fundraise for my cheerleaders. GPR misrepresented information to consumers when making appointments. We were promised bonuses. We sold 67, they made appointements for 37 and said they would come back on July 12th. (a Saturday) I showed up at school during my summer vacation and spent 3 hours waiting on them. They say "it was never confirmed." I didn't pull the date out of a hat. It was confirmed. The girl that handled everything no longer works there- Go figure!
I've called the company several times. "I'll look into it and call you back," they all said. No calls were returned. I spoke with the Really RUDE supervisor today. When I told him that we would never use them again, he accused me of making THREATS! (Not a threat- Only a statement.) By the way, their toll free number has been disconnected when I tried to call today. I had to use the long distance number.
In the past, I have used Knickerbockers several times and should have used them this time. But GPR promised more Bonuses! The grass isn't always greener. This fundraiser actually COST me money!

My daughter's pictures were taken in March at daycare. These pictures were to be her "2yr" pictures. When I went to view the pictures, the staff were almost 2 hours behind for the appointment. The staff also were rude, impersonal, and very unprofessional. Stating comments such as "let's get to the bottom line, how much are you willing to spend." After several parents complained, we were told that there would be free proofs for the parents who called and requested them. I spoke with their Customer Service Manager who stated that they would send me the proofs. After over 8 weeks, I called the Customer Service Manager again to follow up with the status of the proof. At that time I was told that 1) the "proofs" that we spoke of were black and white xerox copies--not the colored copies that were promised. 2) I was told that they were shipped out already several weeks ago. I informed her that I didn't receive anything from her company. She proceeded to loudly and very rudely tell me how I was wrong. She was talking so loudly that several of my co-workers could hear her several feet away. Everyone in the room that heard her were blown away that the CSM would speak to anyone so rudely. I will never deal with this company again. I didn't like the poses, quality, or background. I am really disappointed. They also use the name "Putting on the Ritz"

I absolutely love the pictures that were taken of my children. I spent a little more than I had anticipated because I wanted the framed wall potrait and was a little disappointed in the quality of the frame. The matting was exceptional but the frame was an acrylic type with a plastic front instead of glass. But, all-in-all, I am very satisfied and would recommend GPR to my friends and family.

My wife and daughter fell for the $10 picture hoax at our local High School last month. Before they left,
the photographer, or whomever, had them talked into a $180 picture package. When we finally recieved
the package, there were several photos missing from what was promised in the package. Several
of the photos that were supposed to be "photos", were of the photographer holding signs or placards
in front of our grandchildren's face identifying who the family was and the date the photos were taken!
Out of the 27 pictures we recieved, five of them were not pictures, but "photographer I.D.'s/marks(date/
time/family, etc...), and two of them were much darker than the rest.
I've done amatuer photography for the last three years for friends and family, and after showing this
package to them, they are amazed that this company refers to themselves as "professional"!

.

When I do business with somebody, I want them to want my business. I did not feel like they really wanted my business.

One way they generate sales is to do fund raisers for churches and groups. They offer a free picture. Then they offer various packages to choose from for portraits, frames, poses, etc.

The "free" 8x10 picture is the first shot that is snapped. It does not matter what you as a customer may want, whether you blinked, whether the photographer goofed up, or what. You get the first picture that was shot, for better or worse! You might want to burn it when it comes.

Also, if even one person in one group shot hapens to be a member of another family group taking pictures the same day, the "free" picture is voided. They are real sticklers on this, following the strict orders of their company owner. No special cases, no exceptions for over 15 years according to customer service. It does not seem to matter how many hundreds of dollars are being spent by each family group. (This makes it diffucult for a church group to take advantage of the promotion where extended families are involved.)

Though they also run a frame shop, the colors of wood and types of frames offered are limited to a very narrow selection.

If we had it to do over, I would have liked to use a local photographer running a smaller business who needed our business. One such photographer was used to raise money for the local fire department two years ago and I wish we could have used him at our church. I like the personal touch, especially when recording memories for posterity.

This encounter was impersonal and inflexible.
