.

Went to Wapango because of a glowing review in Chili Pepper magazine. The restaurant itself is massively overdone inside. There is this black fencing on the inside that reminds me of hurricane fence ala Warhol. Sans fence, it's still artsy and dark. Not unpleasant, the booths look comfortable, but it definitely has a cavelike feel. My husband and I chose to eat on the patio instead.

Ordered a selection of appetizers. We were encouraged to try the empanadas and they were merely okay. Out of five appetizers, the shrimp ceviche was the only one with flavour. Excellent. It was the best part of the entire meal. I had the crab and spinach enchilada entree. Crepe itself was green and bland, the crab thumbs up, but the spinach almost non-existant. Husband had the Brazilian Moqueca, touted by the waitress as the spiciest item on the menu. We ordered it extra spicey and it was. Heat, yes. Appealing yes. Something to swoon over, no.

Had the Coconut Cuatro Leches Cake for dessert. Very 'nice'. Comes off as a square layered strawberry shortcake. But I wondered where the coconut was. Or why it was 'special'.

I can see where Wapango is trying to go. I would support them to just go ahead and go there. It seems to me that they're trying to be cutting edge, so they need to just go for it and BRING IT! Instead I think that they're holding back for whatever reason. As a result, I don't see that it's worth it for the money involved for the meal. They should spend more time on tweaking the menu and less time on the decor. When I go out, I go for the food and only the food. It's a good idea, but they need to make it a great idea, if ykwim.

I'll probably try it again sometime, but probably just for lunch.

Pros: Nice patio, some appetizers

Cons: Needs more oomph for that buck
