Friendly service and patrons, and loads of classic memorabilia make this suburban sports bar a low-key diversion.

The Scene
With everything from '82 Cardinals paraphernalia to Marshall Faulk's jersey on display, Max's is a home-team sports bar, with TVs situated around the circle bar, always showing the important St. Louis games. A mostly 30- to 40-something crowd, many on first-name basis with the friendly staff, gives Max's a Midwest "Cheers"-like atmosphere. Being cool and trendy isn't necessary here--feeling welcome is easy.

The Food
Sure, it's St. Louis, but skip the usual Anheuser Busch and try a Boulevard Hefeweizen, a Midwestern brew gaining citywide popularity. The surprisingly extensive menu includes scallop chowder, a creamy and smooth alternative for those who find clams too chewy or fishy. An unbelievably crunchy batter makes the chicken fingers a prime starter, too. But the Chinese chicken salad, served with a bland dressing and wilted lettuce, is disappointing. The three-cheese pizza is also average, highlighted only by the tangy kicker of little onions sprinkled in the sauce.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Save Money - From 4pm to 7pm, Monday-Friday, domestic drafts are $2; longnecks $2.50. Bring your appetite--an hour later, there's a free spread that includes toasted ravioli, wings and roast beef.
  2. Know Before You Go - If a home-team victory celebration gets too out of hand, the Clayton Radisson is next door. Stumble down the hall about a hundred feet and get a safe night's sleep.

Max's gets my vote for best burger around town. Why? Its hand pounded into 9+ ounces of burger beef. When others brag about 1/2 pounders, why not get the biggest. They will also cook it to your request, not necessarily available at other establishments. Slug down a beer of your choice, domestic or foreign, together with ample serving of fries and you been well fed.
