I bought a Shih Tzu puppy from Petland on April 24th, 2011. She has been hospitalized twice since with nebulizer treatments and intravenous fluid resuscitation and seen by a veterinary doctor an additional 2 times for respiratory-related issues, including pneumonia. I understand dogs with brachiocephalic nasal passages often have medical issues affecting their nasal passages and breathing after exertion, but a lower-lobe lung infection is quite beyond what is acceptable.

In addition, I paid $1600 for her when I could have purchased a comparable animal for around $250, but I expected certain perks with purchasing her from Petland (like vaccinations) which I have ended up having to pay for myself, out-of pocket.

Furthermore, she developed epidermal necrolysis (or skin death) between her shoulders where her rabies vaccination was administered. This is not a normal reaction and can result from reused vaccine syringes(!)...

The final straw occurred last week when I took her to the attached grooming clinic to be trimmed and groomed. When I picked her up, she was visibly distressed and when I attempted to lift her up by encircling her ribcage with my palms (as usual), she yelped loudly and cried for several seconds. This leads me to believe she experienced some abuse during her grooming session. Her nails were not trimmed, as promised. She also contracted a rampant case of fleas, which she did not have previously as she is an entirely indoor, single dog. For these reasons, I will never purchase another pet or supply from Petland and I will never use their vet or grooming services.

I DO NOT recommend patronizing Petland for any reason.

I am appalled over this review! The dog was returned and the customer was offered either a replacement puppy (of equal or lesser value) or 50% of money back. The issue was not a sprain it was a genetic disorder found in German Shepard's on the occasion. His calls were returned and his conduct though deplorable was endured. As to the vet issue he bought the puppy right before the office closed for the weekend, I'm truly sorry but the vet does a family and life to go home too.
If this customers attitude had been better this could have be resolved sooner and with less pain on both sides. In the end because of his less then model behavior everyone walked away with there feelings hurt.

What I have reported to petland corperation for Petland Springfield, MO
Dear cooperation managers...this is not a positive comment for your petland in Springfield, MO...In fact I'm about to call my attorney and fight your GM of this store.

My name is Chase Howell and on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at around 6 pm I bought a dog from Petland in Springfield, MO. It was a German Sheppard and her price was $1600. (For one that is too high of a price for her)
But anyways...After buying her they wouldn't hold there veterinarian for a few more minutes to do an exam on her (that was supposed to be done within 4 days after purchase) So I had to pay out of pocket in Kansas City, MO where I live.
I finally got her after getting approved for the loan and took her home. I was home less than 10 minutes when I noticed that she had a "LIMP RIGHT HIND LEG." She could not walk on her paw. In fact she was walking on her Knee instead.
I took her right back to petland because of the leg. It took me less than 5 minutes to get back to them from my fiancs house. I get there and of course your veterinarian is not there and I asked for them to call there veterinarian in to look at her but instead they took her to the back and just looked at her!! They came out and told me it was a sprain and she will be fine in a day or 2. (First of all buying a dog for $1600.00 with a sprain? Is that right in your opinion? I wanted things fixed by their veterinarian and checked out.
So since they wouldn't help me I had to wait till Monday when I was home in Kansas City and I rushed her to the Vet. It cost me $91.00!!! Because it took an X-ray of her right hind leg. She has a dislocated knee (or close to it) however it will take surgery to fix it of a minimum of $1,000. As well it is not a for sure surgery...if it fails that means she will lose her leg.
I have been trying to contact Petland since Monday March 28, 2011. They keep putting it off and will not contact me back. It is sad because I am seeing my fianc' call and they talk to her (who is not on my loan for the puppy) and they keep relaying info to her but will NOT talk to me.
As of today I have had enough!! They told her to tell me they will give her the surgery but will not refund me the money for her. I demand a refund!! The vet I went to as well recommended 100% refund.
She cannot play without falling on her face because of her hind leg and she drags her paw across the ground which is now causing bruising and some bleeding.
This is getting ridicules. I want a 100% refund now!! I will not pay for this!! She is a well behaved dog that needs a good home but she needs the surgery and she is only worth maybe $200.
I want this fixed TOMORROW!! I am reporting this across the news in Kansas City and to KY3 in Springfield, MO about them. I as well will be contacting my attorney since the GM of Petland in Springfield refuses to contact me even after calling 4 days in a row more than 4 times per day.
I as well will fax you the receipts etc for her!!
But I highly recommend you all get this fixed because I am on the verge of getting extremely mad at your company. You have already lost my business and my entire family do to this poor service and poor judgment by your Springfield Location.

Oh and if you want me to keep this dog I still expect a full refund (I will pay for the kennel I bought etc. but not the dog) and I expect her surgery paid in full by you all.

Call me tonight if you want. But I work from 7-3:30 Central Standard Time so call after 3:30 pm please if you call tomorrow. Your fax information will be there shortly as well.

Sincerely,

A VERY UNHAPPY COSTUMER OF PETLAND,

This is for Lauren P who says there is nothing wrong with buying animals from puppy mills! You are being ignorant to this situation! People do sometimes go a little overboard when it comes to animals but somebody has to protect them from stupid people right? It isn't the dogs fault that people decided to domesticate them thousands of years ago! Now that we have it is our job they are not overbred and abused. The whole point of not buying from places like Petland is not to say we don't want to rescue an animal from an unfortunate situation but to teach people that buying puppies from here is only contributing to companies like hunte and puppy mills! Therefore making them wealthier and in turn continuing the cycle of disease and abuse! Yes the dogs do need rescued but I'm not putting one penny in the pockets of sick people/companies! It goes beyond Petland Lauren! It is a much bigger picture than you realize. You probably need to do a little research on reputable breeding and selling. And just because people care about animals doesn't mean they don't care about starving children!!! That is a stupid thing to say! These places do not spend the money on DNA health testing dogs before they breed them and you have obviously never spent money on or endured the loss of an unhealthy puppy that never should have been concieved! And what about the poor dam/female dog that has to spend it's life in a kennel being bred to death? When does she get to be rescued? When does she get a family and a lap to cuddle on? Maybe you would enjoy that kind of treatment! I mean it is JUST AN ANIMAL right?

Ohhhh Boooo-
Petland is great. Petland does get there puppies from Hunte Corportaion... and they get their puppies from USDA & AKC breeders. They have paper work to prove that. Hunte is NOT A PUPPY MILL- but all you people out there who care SO MUCH about these animals, i mean if they were getting such HORRIBLE treatment wouldnt you want to go buy them & rescue them instead of buying from a shelter where... I guess they are taken care of great? you make no sence... I will never get these animal activists... They are JUST ANIMALS! there are children starving EVERYDAY... why dont you try to do something to help the starving homeless children in the world rather than complain about the fed, and sheltered dogs.

I went in for fish and their salt tanks were empty, one person I spoke with didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked for one of the most common types of fish sold.

Also looked at the puppy's just to see what that area looked like and there is no doubt they are from a PUPPY MILL ? http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09077/956343-85.stm

I would have to agree with everyone who has made a complaint against Petland. I bought I bassett hound at Petland in Joplin a little over a year ago and within a few months we noticed he was limping. He was diagnosed with a bone malformation and has had surgery on one leg at this point. I had to take him to an orthopedic doctor in tulsa and surgery for one leg was $1600 (twice the amount I paid for the dog). He still needs to have surgery on the other leg and has to take glucosamine for the rest of his life. After alot of pjone calls and letters they finally offered me a 50% refund, which is only around $430. I have yet to see that check. I expected a full refund for the amount of money I am forking out for the surgeries but they again declined that. I call Maggie the claims person daily because when I spoke with her 2 months agoi she said she sent the check that day. Guess what? Still no check. She left a message saying she would stop payment on the first check and send another one. Still no checkl. They are liars and theives. I absolutely love my dog Dixon and I would hate to think of what would have happened to him if a family that could not afford these surgeries had adopted him. DO NOT BUY FROM PETLAND!!!

DO NOT PURCHASE FROM PETLAND IN SPRINGFIELD MO!!!

Please do not put yourself through the heartache me and my husband just went through!! We purchased a Cockapoo there last nite and he was sick. I had ask repeated questions about this puppy and his behaviour and was assured time and time again he was just fine, he was "just tired" from a long day. After a sleepless nite with a baby that would not eat, drink, move, sleep, or go to the bathroom we contacted them and was treated like WE were crazy or lying.. we took the dog all the way back to Springfield to be treated even worse in person by a very rude and unsympathetic manager who could not get the dog to do any of the above either, but tried to act like we were horrible people. We have a daughter that is our number one priority and we could not have her getting attached to a sick animal. Instead of helping us they threatened us with lawsuits and police. In an agonizing decision we left the poor dog there and left with more threats of prosecution.
I have cried since 10:30 this morning and am heartsick, we returned home where I started my research and I am apalled and sickened about the things I have found out about PL!! I then called Missouri cockapoo breeders and was told non of the actions of the puppy were "normal" of that breed or of a healthy puppy!!! I was told the puppy was sick and we did the right thing. I'm not sure any of that will help when we are "prosecuted" by PL, but in my heart I know we did what
we had to do!!

Please do not help these horrible people continue to hurt other families and I hope God has no mercy on them for the horrible and cruel treatment of his innocent creatures!!

We bought two tiny female guinea pigs from Petland. Right after we got them home, my daughter found a scab on one of them. It turned out to be MANGE. We returned to Petland and could see scabs on many of the other guineas too. Oh yeah, and they also turned out to be males.

Petland uses a dog breeder called Hunte Corporation, which has had numerous claims filed against them for the mistreatment of their animals and their poor living conditions. They are what most people would refer to as the stereotypical "puppy mill." Many of their dogs wind up with health problems later in life because of this. Do not support them! Go to a shelter to get your new furry friend and take a stand against Petland and the Hunte Corporation!

For those of you consumers out there that want one of those "cute little furries" for your child, you may get more than you paid for! This is why. Back in June, My husband and I bought a YOUNG (I mean not much more than a month old) female guinea pig, from Petland. The next week, my nephew bought 2 young female guinea pigs from the same store. Well, unbeknownst to any of us, all 3 cavies turned out to be pregnant!!! Now, all 3 mammas have had their babies and they are happy and healthy here with us. But upon calling Petland, the only thing I was told was that they don't have the room to separate their small animals and they try to catch the prego ones when they see them. Oh, and they offered to take the babies if we didn't want them! So they can put them back with the other males, and make more money selling them??? I don't think so!! If a pet store doesn't have the room to separate the genders of their animals, then they certainly shouldn't be selling so many!! But, I guess they try to find any and every way to make another dollar. I've always been told "Adopt, don't shop" and we have tried to do that when possible..But after this experience, I will NEVER buy another animal from any pet store! And I am not sure about ALL of their employees, but I do know that the girl that helped us that day was FAR less knowledgable about guinea pigs than I am, but she chose to treat my family as if we knew nothing, suggesting items that were not needed for a cavy. Including an exercise wheel and ball, who ANY responsible guinea pig owner knows that guinea pigs ARE NOT TO USE THOSE!!!! They are very dangerous for a cavy's back! Anyway, I was not very happy with the way we were treated that day..>Don't they say "The customer is always right?" Especially when the customer knows more than the employee??? Anyway, maybe they just need to retrain their staff in customer service. Oh, and the whole "Lets take the family to petland to play w/all the puppies". Have you stopped to think about those poor pups? I know they would much rather be out playing than to be stuck in those cages, but to be handed from person to person to person ALL day long!!! That is SOOO stressful on a puppy! And dangerous! Just because they have hand sanitizer, doesn't mean everyone uses it, and so many bad diseases and such can be passed from human to animal. So in conclusion, I strongly recommend not shopping at petland for even supplies, unless you know for sure what YOU need. And if you ever have any doubts about buying animals from a pet store like petland, petsmart, petco, or pet warehouse, just take a look at PETA's website and get a disgusting glimpse at just how "well" these poor animals are transported and treated!
