I saw the members of this team perform at a recent Tae Kwon Do event in Shoreline. The entire time fought with respect, and even when they outmatched opponents they did not take advantage. Excellent discipline shown.

We were looking for a place where our family could develop discipline, respect, integrity, courtesy and self acceptance. Our family was welcomed into the Yi Sport family with ease. We love the gentle yet firm style of the coaches and as a parent I loved how each lesson regarding the art of Tae Kwon Do could also apply to life's lessons. My oldest son started when he was 7- he's now 14, my youngest son and only daughter began shortly after that. It wasn't long before I gave in to the desire to want to be like them. All the things that I'd seen them grow into was a model for me~ my children were modeling for ME! Acceptance of one's abilities and skills, respect for others no matter what, being responsible to those who depend upon you, belonging to a community who quickly became family~ all while having fun, staying fit, and enjoying something together as a family. My two sons, daughter and myself are all Gold medalist in the sport but that's only a bonus beyond all of the other rewards we've gained. We love Yi Sport Tae Kwon Do~ the home of the best Tae Kwon Do champions in Washington.

Most of the Students, in our school, come from other schools, in the area, and our students stay here for years, to achieve their black belt. They learn from a variety of Yi Sport teachers in Tae kwon do, not just from one sole person.
As in the whole community we are just one of many, and it is not just the values, the children learn, inside the school, it is the honor, compassion and empowering of the children to learn and control the inner self.
It is the journey that is important, not the destination and when the destination is reach there is always another journey.
Right now, we have found a home and family in Yi Sport and from the other 14 school I have visited in my area before choosing Yi Sport. There is no distance greater in which my daughter, has traveled and will travel, then what she has learned and is learning at Yi Sports.

Yi Sport is by far the best school of Olympic Teakwondo in the State of Washington and one of the best schools in the nation. Its program allows athletes to train extensively in competitive Taekwondo and its coaches' drive for excellence and passion for the sport provide athletes with the most updated technical skills. My daughter, who is 14 and a black belt, has not only improved greatly as a competitor since she joined the school in 2004, but she has also found a group of outstanding friends whom she loves to be with practically every day. Thanks to our coaches' approach to the sport as a mind-and-body discipline, we at Yi Sport consider ourselves more as a family of friends rather than a sport club. I warmly encourage everybody who is interested in martial arts to come to our school and see for him/herself.

If you're looking to get your kids into martial arts - for exercise, for confidence, for self-defense, or for sports competition ?? Yi Sport is the right place. We started our kids in taekwondo at another school. It didn't take long before we were getting pressured to prepay thousands of dollars to ??get them a black belt? in 3-4 years. This maybe a common business model in martial arts, but we found it distasteful, especially the underlying premise that our goal in participating was just getting to a black belt.

Yi Sport is completely different. You pay (a very reasonable amount) by the month. The focus is on training, conditioning and learning every day - belt promotions happen as kids advance in their skills and the advancement really means something. Head Coach Lionel Lee is a constant presence in the studio. He sets the tone: demanding, hard working, yet warm and supportive. Kids recognize his integrity and authenticity and they respond with incredible effort. The students are drawn from all over the region and are an unusually diverse group.

It's important to know from the beginning that Yi Sport emphasizes sport taekwondo. From early in their training, kids don protective gear and start sparring. Participation in tournaments is not required, but these provide a tangible reward for daily training and the kids love the competition. Yi Sport, as a whole, does extremely well in tournament play locally, regionally and nationally. These young athletes are an impressive group, distinguished as much by their sportsmanship and camaraderie as by their technical skills and determination. We have been extremely pleased with Yi Sport.

I was disappointed to see a negative review from another poster; I'm not sure he has ever been to the school. His criticism was that the school focuses on sport; well, it does and it caters to those who want this focus. But other aspects of taekwondo are also taught: several kids from the school won national championships in forms (poomsae) at junior nationals last year. Finally, it??s offensive to question the coach's motives because he is not (nor does he claim to be) a ??master.? He is a teacher, a role model and a coach. We are thrilled that our kids have him in their life.

Yi Sport TKD has been a wonderful experience for my family. Even though only one of my children currently receives instruction, my entire family feels as though we all belong to the school, as the teachers are as concerned for "non-members" as they are for the participants.
Since my son began taking lessons last fall, his strength, coordination, and confidence have increased dramatically. Prone to feelings of anxiety, he tells me that he now "feels more calm inside." The teachers at Yi Sport Tae Kwon Do are like additional parents, friends, counselors and no-nonsense coaches all rolled into one. If you need strength, discipline and friendship, try Yi Sport TKD.

To start off I just want to give my utmost respect to Lionel Lee, aka Coach Lee for teaching my son and the rest of the Yi Sport Family, the art of this wonderful Martial art. You are truly a wonderful person and mentor for all these kids.

My son has only been doing TKD about 4 months now and it has done a lot for him, from building his confidence to teaching him how to treat others and respect others. I could go on and on about what it has done for him and sure it has done for others like him.

One thing I like is the fact that he works with each individual kid and there own skill levels to work with. Another thing you really have to earn your belts they are not just given to you like other places do.

The school itself and all the kids in it are just like a family all of there own. They all help and support each other in ways not very many Martial arts schools do. If someone needs help with something they really all come together to help that person out to get what they need to get it done.

Coach Lee knows every kids by name and what there strengths and weaknesses are either in sparing or the daily activities that are done. That is very impressive to me cause most coaches don't really focus that much on each persons individual strengths and weaknesses. I could just write on and on about so much it is just to hard to describe it. You have to come in and check it out for yourself. It is truly an amazing experience for you or or children to try out..

Again thank you Coach Lee for all that you do and teach our children. You are truly and inspiration...

Pros: Self defense, Self control, Confidence, to much to list..

Cons: Nothing!!!

Yi Sport Taekwondo is well organized and detail oriented when it comes to training, at this school there is a method to training and a metric to identify growth. Coach Lee and his staff know every student by name, individual strengths and areas for improvement. He tracks all statistics for his competition team and identifies potential threats to each competitor.
Coach Lee provides a positive and encouraging environment for students to reach their full potential. He is very responsive to parents and is truthful when it comes to individual assessment, goals and areas of potential growth.
The Monthly fee is reasonable and is not tied into any service contract or commitment that asks for more money as the training intensifies. You get the full scope of training from day one and the real Martial Arts training that you have been seeking.
The goal is to make a well trained and well rounded Martial Artist. Other schools seek to reach for the Black Belt only status and charge heavily for it; Yi Sport Taekwondo does not do that.
Yi Sport Taekwondo is a Full service school where one is able to learn Self Defense, Poomse, and Sparring as well as fitness and real athletic conditioning.
Yi Sport Taekwondo also has an immense support team. The parents are highly supportive of the coach and other students in the school. They do fundraising and help each other out like a big family does.
We commute 4 times a month from Lacey for this intense training. In 30 days my children have made vast improvements and have benefited from the conditioning that is important for competition. Coach Lee??s style and attitude brings out the best in my children.
Schools in the Lacey area do not focus on the student and their abilities they are profit driven and issue Black Belts on a whim. We recently left one that conducted business in this fashion. We made a strategic change for the right reasons and now belong to the WINNING TEAM?..
I highly recommend this school for your Martial Arts and Taekwondo needs!

I visited Yi Sport Tae Kwon Do the other day to decide whether or not it was a good fit for my kids. Located in between Capitol Hill and Southshore in Seattle, it is pretty close to I-5, although, I live in Wallingford, so it's not as convenient as other Tae Kwon Do schools here in Seattle. Despite the fact that it's not as close as other tkd schools, it's where I'll be taking my kids. Lionel Yi is the owner who teaches and also happens to be the Washington State Tae Kwon Do coach. He is a serious guy, but he does seem to crack a smile with the kids, some of which were as young as 4 years old. He also knows everyone's name and seemed to know the right amount of pressure or praise to give. I watched a class with 6-10 year olds and was impressed with their dedication and the diversity of the group. There were kids of varying skill and from every racial background. If you are concerned about the lack of diversity in your neighborhood, this would be something to check out. I'm going to use it as an after-school program for my kids, and there were many parents watching and hanging out. I feel comfortable leaving them their without supervision as I can't take time off work to watch their practice.

The diversity is something I'm excited to expose my kids too (who don't have much in our neighborhood). The class I watched had plenty of girls too, which I thought was cool. Some kids do tkd to build balance and discipline for dance, ballet, or other sports. I see it as a leadership builder as I saw some kids take on that roll in the class I observed.

Some kids do it 2 days per week, some everyday. The kids were definitely breaking a sweat and another dad I met said it has done wonder for his 2 hyper boys. On Saturdays they have super competitive tkd with 4 hour practices and kids who come as far away as Spokane and Portland (he is the state coach so it brings in serious tkd'ers). It is competitive, and I'm not sure I have interest in that for my kids yet, they're too young. This is the first school in the Northwest to send 3 people to national trials. There are national champion teachers in punce and form. I think Lionel had a different approach than the female instructor I saw (she had been a student as well), and it was great to see that people grow up with the program. There seemed to be something for every age, skill at Yi Sport Tae Kwon Do in Seattle. Lionel says the average kid sticks with it for 6 years, and some have been doing it with him for over 10.

We chose Yi Sport not sure if we wanted our son (then 5 years old) to attend a sport-oriented martial arts school over a traditional dojang. Without question, we made the right choice. At Yi Sport, there is a great balance of competition skill building with mind-body development. Since joining the school, I have watched my son?s athleticism, strength and speed improve. But more importantly, his self-esteem and body-confidence have grown exponentially. He carries himself more assuredly, his interest in other sports has grown, and he truly enjoys both the art and the competition aspects of Tae Kwon Do. The ethnic and socio-economic diversity at Yi Sport is unmatched by any other school we have seen, which is important given our family composition and values. We couldn?t be happier with our membership at Yi Sport. My son has found a successful team, a group of demanding and caring mentors, and strong community.

As a competitive Tae Kwon Do practitioner for 15 yrs I have competed in Korea, Puerto Rico, Canada and across the U.S. During this time I have experienced a wide range of coaching styles. None of these however hold a candle to the intensity and love for the sport of Tae Kwon Do that Coach Lee at YI Sport Tae Kwon Do possesses.

Yi Sport has the highest level of sport Taekwondo trainning you can get in washington state. I have been doing Taekwondo for 14 years and when I saw that washington state had a school that was interested in the developement of athletes and not just being a Black belt factory I had to write a review. At Yi Sport I don't see just martial artist because they train like world class athletes on every level as low as the 4 year olds to as high as the adults. The leadership is Contagious and reflect within each student. If I had a child I would give him or her a chance to enjoy the same things I do about Taekwondo at Yi Sport.

The best of the best! Our son began tae kwon do when he was 5 years old at another school. At the time we didn't realize the huge differences that existed between one school and another. Our first school lacked leadership, organization & focus. The kids were advanced in belts rapidly without the foundation of the fundamental skills. The school was more like a tae kwon do recreational center with expensive fees.
A former coach & student later introduced us to Yi Sport, after one practice, we never returned to our old school. We were amazed at the atmosphere Yi Sport created between the students & coaches. At first it was difficult to change school for our 11 year old son, the practices were challenging & fitting in was uncomfortable. It didn't take long for our son to make friends, the school creates an atmosphere of belonging regardless of gender or ethnicity.
Yi Sport school is coached by fabulous coaches whom take an interest in each individual to develop them into the best person they can be, not just the best athlete. At Yi Sport the children are exposed to training to better their physical conditioning, mental toughness, self-esteem & self-disipline. The kids our fostered to be accountable for themselves inside the gym, as well as, at home and school. We drive 45 minutes one way to take our children (now 14, 10 & 6 years old) to Yi Sport. People often think were crazy, but I respond, "our children are learning more than just tae kwon do, they are learning life skills by wonderful mentors & coaches."
On a final note, if all the above wasn't enough, the school produces some of the top tae kwon do athletes around, check out their web site to see their incredible achievements. When one focuses on the whole person, great things happen! Yi Sport is that place. Thank you to all the coaches at Yi Sport, especially Coach Lee.

We moved to Seattle a year ago and found this gem of a place. It was the kind of Tae Kwon Do school that we thought we could only dream up. We wanted a place that would help us continue to build strength, ambition, and self confidence in our kids. We wanted our kids to develop physical, mental, and emotional skill and strength. We wanted our kids to feel they were a part of a diverse and cohesive group. We wanted them to find leaders who cared deeply about them and who not only believed in them but lead them to a place where they believed in themselves. We wanted to find a community of people who shared these dreams. We found it at Yi Sport in the indomitable spirit of the leaders, Coach Lee, Coach Sarah, and all of the other dedicated members.

If you're looking to get your kids into martial arts - for exercise, for confidence, for self-defense, or for sports competition - you've found the right place (Yi Sport has adult classes as well, but I can only comment on their youth programs).

We started our kids in taekwondo at a studio on Mercer Island. It didn't take long before we were getting pressured to prepay thousands of dollars to get them a black belt in 3-4 years. This maybe a common business model in martial arts, but I found it distasteful, especially the underlying premise that our goal in participating was just getting to a black belt.

It's important to know that Yi Sport emphasizes sport taekwondo. From very early in their training, kids don protective gear and start sparring.

The downsides are a relative small space (though there are plans to upgrade in the near future) and - for us - the trek from the Eastside into Seattle. These inconveniences are easily outweighed by the many positives. Stop by and see for yourself!

I have been looking for a taekwondo school for 6 years. Yi Sport Taekwondo is exactly what I wanted. It not only does the traditional training you would expect from a TKD school, but adds a whole new dimention to it that I have never experieced before. I have being doing TKD for 12 years, and for the first time I actually making improvements in areas that I could never have dreamt of. My speed, strength and endurance are better now than when I was a teenager.

What this school does aside from kicking/punching is plyometrics, advanced speed and strength drills, balance, core, and flexibilty excercises. I am a woman and finally was able to lose those last stuborn 5lbs. It's a fun atmosphere, with positive support from the current members. You will not feel out of place, no matter what your level is. It's not just for kicks, this place will make you sweat!

I have tried other schools in the past. I was at World Martial Arts on Mercer Island for 8 months, and I never felt I gained much or got a good workout. They concentrated too much on self dense, and not enough on moving and developing an overall balanced athletic performance. This has mostly to do with the head coach (Coach Lee) who teaches each and every class day in and day out. He pours his heart out to the students and has a deep concern for each person's developement. His coaching is methodical, and purposeful. With varying degrees of being technical to modivational.

If you want to be in the best shape of your life, gain balance- strength you could not get from weights, and be an overall powerful martial artist, then come to this place you will not be disappointed. That is if you are into seeing results.

Pros: Atmosphere, cushion flooring, easy parking and access, price, kid friendly, 2 thumbs up

Cons: Small training facility, traffic accross the floating bridge on Fridays
