- as comparison made with Indian restaurants!!

Travel frequently and have visited Indian restaurants coast-to-coast.
Wish I could give this negative stars, but 1 it will be :(

-Pricey menu: Paneer Tikka Masala, 2 Garlic Naans and Mango

Wow... seriously: This has GOT to be the best Pakistani and North Indian food in the area. It certainly goes directly to the head of MY list.

The restaurant was recommended to me by a work colleague. I was soooo glad for the recommendation! I had been searching for YEARS for a restaurant in the area with an authentic Northern Indian or Pakistani taste... but nothing seemed that good to me. Decent? Sure.... but really GOOD? Never. Until I found THIS place, which is just outstanding.

I had the Chicken Karahi and the Lamb Biryani. The Karahi had gorgeously ripe tomato pieces, and that sauce! WONDERFUL. I've never been a big fan of Biryanis... I always found them sort of boring. But the Lamb Biryani was recommended, and it was truly excellent. The lamb wasn't over cooked and was extremely tasty. The sauce on the rice was exeptional.

The naan was also tender and delicious.

The dining room has pleasantly loud buzz, with folks having a good time. The service was friendly and prompt.

I'll definitely be back... HIGHLY recommended.

This place is indeed a gem.

I heard positive reviews about this place from a classmate, so two friends and I decided to drive from Seattle to try it out. The experience surpassed expectations and will make me a regular. First off, the graciousness of the father-son owners was apparent from the moment we walked in the door. We legitimately felt welcomed by Shan, the son. We didn't know what we wanted so we got recommendations- naan (basically mandatory), the tandori fish, an almond curry and a green malasla (all of which have more specific names that I can't recall).

The white fish was especially good with the perfect amount of seasonings and little fishiness. While the fish wasn't cheap, it was worth the price since the portion was huge (4 large pieces), so it's an excellent item to share. While I loved both of the other items, the almond curry wins points for its uniqueness. It didn't have an overly almond flavor, but it was more dynamic than other curries I have had without being too strong in flavor. Although the chicken was really tender, it's one of those dishes that you want to make sure you consume all of the sauce, preferably with naan.

We hadn't intended on getting dessert. We were really full, but we all figured that the homemade rice pudding and ice cream were worth a try. Yes, they were. Whatever warm pastry they had in the middle of the rice pudding was sinfully good.

Great place. Worth the drive down to Renton.

I can't understand complaints about the owner when my family and I have eaten there many times and have had a great time with the owner, and everyone else. My daughter has been to India so that probably makes a difference, but he is still friendly to everyone I could see. Food is fantastic as well. My wife and daughter have both been to India, daughter three times, and this is their favorite "authentic" establishment. We have a great time every time we eat there!

We used to visit this restauratn from the days when previous owner owned it and when the new owner took over the food quality greatly improved but during last couple of visit we realized that food is not up to par and the owner has become very rude proably due to stress of running the restaurant. He is pushy ans when you do not buy the stuff he offers you he smirkls and make fun of you.

I used to frequent this restaurant a lot but lately have been let down, in particular by the attitude of the owner. The website claims 2 people can eat under $20, that is so not true. The worst thing is the owner tries to smooth talk and sell you unlisted items (so called specials) that are priced above the menu items. Besides that he tries to be funny and unnecessarily friendly. On a recent visit a coworker complained that the veggie dish was stale and the restaurant staff acknowledged it. The owner's son came back with a fresh dish and apologized. However the (elderly) owner after a while showed up and tried to engage in a coverup. He blamed overripe tomatoes and claimed that everyone else in the restaurant was having the same dish and no one else complained. Seriously, how many people eat vegetarian at Naan-nCurry. So it was basically just my coworker that had a problem is what he was saying. All this after his staff had acknowledged that the vegetables were stale. In any other restaurant I would expect them to compensate by offering a sweet dish or apology at a minimum. Won't be returning to this place anytime soon.

Of course the food is sooo good. The price is outrageous though. Every now and then I'll treat myself to Saag, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Corma. So delicious if you've never tried.

While I miss the lunch buffet, they do have an inexpensive variety of tasty dishes for lunch. Dinner is better- be sure to try the tea. It is exotic, spicy and sweet. The staff is very friendly.

Food is ok. But DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN HERE. The owner has very little tolerance for kids, and repeatedly lies about "customers complaining about the noise". This is by no means a family friendly establishment. Even if very well-behaved kids make any noise (as kids do), they will be quickly lied to by the owner and asked to keep their kids in line. UNREAL!

Funny thing is, it is not even that nice of a restaurant - meaning, it is not considered fine dining - yet the old man that owns the place cannot stand it if a child makes any noise at all. I do not recommend this place.

Friday night walked in a packed Naan N Curry for the first time. Almost left due to long wait. The owner's continuous update on the tables and taking our order before the table ready convinced us to stay. To our amaze within 15 seconds of our seating our appetizer (Fish Tandoori) was on our table.
The best fish I ever had in my life. Mughlai chicken and Achar gosht were among the best we had. Worth a wait.

I went to Naan and Curry with my husband and sister a few months ago for the first time. The place has an OK ambience, nothing great but the food is good. Better than any restaurant on the eastside for sure. We ordered korma, briyani and daal. However, the owner is too annoying and makes the eating experience very uncomfortable. He comes to take the order, talks too much, tries to be over friendly and is almost ill mannered. He always tries to up sell , suggesting the most expensive items on his menu ( i have been there several times after that) and really, the owner is too irritating. He comes back to ask about the food too many times, and refuses to leave. He does not know where to stop being hospitable and tries to sell all the time. It is better to take out rather than sit and listen to his non stop nonsense.

This place has never let me down, and the owners are there to make sure that you are enjoying your food. Kinda pricy, but well worth it. I always end up having a table full of dishes; fresh rice, naan is soft, and everything tastes like it is made to order. Tandoori is superb, not overcooked. And if I go alone, they seat me facing the tv that they show Bollywood movies on. Go there!

This is the MOST PATHETIC restaurant in Seattle area. I am telling this based on my personal experience. In the last 2 visits of mine in last one month, I had 2 real bad experiences. Today, I found an IRON PIECE in the "dal special" I ordered. I couldn't show it to the owner as I ordered a "To Go" today. A few days back, I visited the restaurant with my friends and one of my friends found a 'B*G' in his order. We showed it to the owner and first he said its not a B*G. Its just some 'masala'. But then he agreed and replaced the ordered food. The staff there is also NOT cool. They (including the owner) try to be too friendly with the customers and in doing so, too often cross the line. Once I was there with my friends and one of us didn't received the food on time. When he asked the waiter twice about what is the delay, the waiter brought the food but just kept on roaming around the restaurant shouting for my friends name. The waiter was pretending as if he didn't know where my friend is sitting. It was really irritating. I sincerely hope after reading this, you guys never pick this place for food.

What a great find! After doing exhausting research on the best Indian/Pakistani food around, I stumbled at Naan N Curry. I read about them online a few months ago, and saw that many people enjoyed it although there were some negative points as well. But despite those and my past awful experiences, I decided to give it a shot and now I am hooked! Parking was a bit difficult but did not take too long. As we are approaching the restaurant I could smell tandoori chicken! It only made me want to walk faster. We (a group of 6 adults) arrived close to when they close but could still here the awesome bollywood music before we walked in. It was quite busy and we were seated after about 15 mins or so, and boy was it worth the wait! The person who took our order was helpful in choosing dishes to my friends who were a little on the pickier side. Everything was so great! I ordered the Chicken tikka masala, beef kababs, and my favorite, the garlic naan! It was cooked to perfection and I did not talk the entire time because I was so busy stuffing everything in my mouth! If anything was unappealing about the restaurant it could have been the decor, but once you have the food, none of that matters! For all you that havent been there, GO GO GO GO! A plus to this place is that my Indian co-workers say that this is extremely close if not the same taste as they have back home!

This place used to be my favorite Indian restaurant! I first discovered Naan-N-Curry two years ago. I have brought many friends to this place. I would drive 30 minutes to have some saffron rice and chicken tikka masala. In short, the food was amazing and I was hooked.

In the last few months I have been dissapointed over and over again. The saffron rice that has been mushy and visually unapealing over and over again. The garlic naan is slathered with pieces of garlic (think cheese on pizza) leaving you with really really bad breath. Even the chicken tikka masala is not that great.

Bottom line: There are better Indian places out there folks.

The service used to be great too. I have been very dissapointed with the owner (he seems like he is the owner). They used to offer complementary tea and really seemed to care about your experience. It's a whole differenet story now.

I think this place used to be excellent. However, with increasing customers the quality and standards have suffered greatly. The owners need to go back to how they used make the food and how they treat customers

The owner was very friendly and chatty but too bad the food was really lacking in standard. We ordered the Lamb and Okra dish and there was hardly any meat or okra in the dish. Instead about 80% fried french onions.... it strangely was reminiscent of the ones we buy in a can...... Seriously, don't waste your $$.

It is a very good restaurant as far as the taste goes. People are friendly too and not bad service.

Given that I come from Hyderabad, A.P. India - it is very difficult to beat my standards of "great food" and I am not going to say that this restaurant did. But the owner did mention the names of the best restaurants (Paradise and Bawarchi) in Hyderabad and compared his food to those. I was telling myself that atleast they are aiming high....

I liked the curry based entrees a lot more (the fresh ginger topping on curries is a great idea), very nice taste. I did not like the Biryani's as much - they were ok. This however is beyond any question, the best in seattle metro area that I have tasted so far.

The negatives are they use too much oil. I can really live without that. Also, the ambience is not the best place for a sit down dining. It is ideal for take-outs.

This is the first time i am writting a review for any restuarant. My husband and I were quite unhappy with the kind of Indian food we get here in Seattle. We almost always made a compromise when we went to any Indian restuarant till we visited a restuarant in Bellevue and this one. And this pushed me to write what i felt. The food here is very authentic and tasty. They do customise per your choice and i would definitely recommend this to my friends. Go for it.

Taking a cue from biryanibuff's review, we tried the lamb biryani yesterday and it WAS delicious! I'd go so far as to say it was as good as my mother-in-law's, but I wouldn't tell HER that. The chicken tikka masala is great, too. You can choose from white meat or dark, which is an option I haven't found very often. Since I prefer dark, which is hard to find, this is great for me! My in-laws were disappointed with the roti, and said it was too thin. My husband liked the lamb seekh kababs, but the rest of us weren't very impressed.

I generally like going to Indian restaurants that have the lunch buffet spread, but this place is awesome without it. Just went today for the first time, and ordered garlic nan (great), beef kabobs (very good), and the Handi Chicken 4 star (totally awesome). The Handi had this awesome sauce, hard to describe but I believe he said in addition to regular spices, they add coriander and fennel. Everything was very fresh and well cooked, not burnt and not dry. Very friendly wait staff as well, nice ambiance. I dig and will return.

This is the first time i found food good enough to write a review for. Me and my wife moved to the US from India a little more than a year back, and were dying to find a place that had good biryani. Every other resturant we tried was worse than the other.
Now, getting good biryani is difficult even in India, but finding it here in the northwest was the biggest culinary surprise we got. The LAMB BIRYANI is absolutely awesome, we had it for dinner and then went back next day for lunch.

Yes, it's that good.

So, if you are looking for authentic indian food that would give tough competition to and Indian resturant in india, this is THE place to go.

A friend of mine is from the Bay Area, CA and one day we were driving through Renton and spotted Naan-n-Curry. He noticed it because that is a chain of GREAT Indian/Paki restaurants in California. We decided to try it, and thank goodness we did!

This place not only has the best Indian food I've ever had (and I've been around), but I am now addicted. Try the haleem and chana masala or the bhindi, they are to die for. Also, say hello to the owners. They are always there and always love to hear what we think about the food and service.

I saw a negative posting below about the mean not being halal, which is completely bogus because I know for a fact that this place serves only halal meat. My friend wouldn't eat it if it wasn't. I think that person who put up the negative posting had other intentions, maybe a competitor? ;) All I know is it's it's not true. Look at the rest of the postings. This place is WHERE IT'S AT!

I always come here during lunch and have always left completely satisfied and very full! The restaurant is big enough that we never have to wait for a table and the head waitress is always super friendly and attentive. She remembered us after just one visit, which is always nice when returning to a restaurant as it doesn't often happen! The food is the best Indian food I've had in the Seattle area and I feel like I've been to several of the more prominent ones here; their Marsala is to die for. The wait staff is friendly, the food is excellent and so reasonably priced (Lunches are huge and $7.99) and the service is prompt and attentive! Even if you're coming from Seattle, it's worth the drive. Highly recommended!

Excellent first experience at this restaurant. Some of the best palak paneer and garlic naan I've had. I had never had vegetarian karahi before, but found this specialty dish to be quite tasty.

Looking for a kid-friendly place? This is it! We had travelled from Portland with 42 fourth graders. The staff welcomed us gladly, and the kids were encouraged to express themselves -- at full volume.

I will be back the next time I'm in the Seattle area, even if it means a side trip and delay from reaching home or another destination.

This is in response to Nan Halal for Muslim04/19/2007 Posted by cm1234

Naan-N-Curry is extremely concerned that our valued customer was embarassed by the non-halal situation. Unfortunately instead of checking our purchasing and halal authentification records these folks relied on the back alley dumpsters. These dumpsters are also shared by several other local restaurants. Naan-N-Curry sells only HALAL MEAT.

The link below will guide you to Naan-N-Curry, the 50 finds of Seattletimes Pacific Northwest Dining Out 2006 Megazine.
Go to seattletimes website and Search for "From Homey To Haute By Nancy Leson"

At Naan-N-Curry we only sell freshly cooked food. Depending on the nature of food, it could take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to prepare an order.

Hopefully we have clarified the issues raised by our valued customer.

Friend of mine is a devoted Muslim from Portland. During his last visit to Seattle I wanted to take him to a Halal restaurant. I was told by someone the partner of Naan and Curry Majid (aka Mike) is a Muslim from Pakistan and they serve Halal meat. Before ordering food we made sure the menu had Halal on it. The waiter assured him that meat was halal. We ordered dinner and had to wait for 20 minutes (and restaurant was almost empty). Finally we got our dinner, while we were eating our dinner another waiter showed up. My friend asked him if meat was halal just to confirm. The waiter said "I think it is Halal". My friend got a little concerned. He asked to see the owner. He was told the owner is not around. We paid for the dinner and left the restaurant but my friend (little paranoid when it comes to meat) went straight to the restaurant dumpster (back alley) and here was right on the top a card board from a local chicken distributor which does not serve Halal. Halal meat containers comes with Halal symbol. My friend was really disgusted but did not want to create trouble. I can't tell you how embarrassed was I. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. (BTW, My friend told me that always check dumpster if you are not sure what they are feeding you Hummm!).
Update April 3, 2007: I done some research and learned that Naan-n-curry was never featured in Seattle Times as the owners claim on their website.
To see the 2006 list from Seattle Times you can google "Seattle Times Top restaurants 2006". You can see their list, Naan-n-Curry is not on that list.
_____ OK< after 2 years I tried to give this place another shot. I must say it was even worst. The owner is too irritating old man with ugly attitude. I hate the way he tries to oversell items. We ordered Chicken Karahi and some appetizers. When we saw the bill I felt like calling the Obama adminstration for fiancial assistance with. They over charged us $14 and after much unneeded conversation and excuses they removed it but it left a bitter taste in our mouth. This place could do better if the owner is not there. I heard their best chef has left them due to owner's attitude.

My husband and I went to Naan n Curry the other night and found it to be delicious. My mango lassi was amazing and seemed to use a lot of fresh mango. We shared the sizzling chicken plate, which was a bit pricey for $20. We both agreed it was well worth the price once we started to eat. The chicken was remarkably flavorful and tender and there was enough that we took some home for the next day. We also had the chicken tikka masala which was some of the best I have ever had, although I would have enjoyed more chicken. We ate all of the chicken provided, but there was plenty of sauce for the next day. The garlic naan and raita was wonderful as well. I should have ordered more naan since their portion raita was so generous. The only complaint we had was that the hours on the website were wrong and stated that the restaurant was open until 10:30, but it was only open until 9:00. Luckily, we got there in plenty of time to have a wonderful meal.

Pros: adequate seating - never had to wait too long for a table, friendly hosts, quick turn around for carry out, ample portions leave leftovers, amazing photo collection on the wall.

Cons: parking during noon hour can be tight but worth the short walk.

We discovered this jewel in Renton thru one of our friends and have not stopped going since. Dont even waste time with any other Indian/Pakistani restaurant in the Seattle area....just make the drive to downtown Renton and most assuredly you will not be disappointed. Simply AWESOME food......extremely reasonable prices...and very accomodating staff. Need I say more?

Last summer, my husband and I used to drive down from North Seattle weekly just to eat dinner at Naan-N-Curry. We loved it. Being of Pakistani descent, this was the best place for Indo-Pak food East of the Pacific Ocean - Haleem and Nehari on the menu = heaven. We went there last week and were totally disappointed. The food had no flavor, we ordered 4/5 spicyness, and there was no heat. All the dishes I used to get and love were bland and unsatisfying. Did they change ownership recently, or was it just a bad night? I didn't see any familiar faces among the waitstaff...

I'm afraid that the drive down to Renton is too much for unreliable food - there are a lot of great places in Seattle proper for tasty Indian food. What happened, N-n-C? *sob*

If you're familiar with the naan-n-curry restaurants in the Bay area you'll love this. The food is better here and it's full service, but it does lack the energy that the location in the Sunset has. On the plus side though, not being completely packed means that you can have a conversation while you eat.

The dishes I've tried here are more delicately spiced than most of what you'll find in the northwest, and I'd love it if they opened something closer to Seattle- but it's still worth the trek to Renton

This is one of the best indian/pakistani restaurants i've eaten at in a long time. I grew up in pakistan and it reminds me of the food back home. The owners are passionate about cooking them selves and that adds a special touch. I recommend this 100% just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Must try!!!

Given their claims (storefront says something like "best in the northwest") I was expecting more. Though I am by no means an expert, I felt the dishes I had were just average. Prices were also higher than I am used to paying for south asian food, though maybe I got spoiled living in Toronto. They also lose points with me because I found a chunk of chicken in a dish that is supposed to be vegetarian. Wait staff provided prompt service.

My wife and I showed up at 6 on a Sunday night, and they had a TV blaring up front, music blaring out back, staff yelling and smashing dishes everywhere, and a noisy large table of rude Pakistani or India 30-something young men partying in the back. An hour later the large rude party was gone, other two-some parties were arriving, and things were getting more comfortable. The food is outstanding, and the prices very reasonable -- we paid $28 plus tip for Naan, two main courses, rice and two Mango Lassis. We ordered our food 2 *'s out of 4 and found it quite spicy already. They do not serve even beer or wine yet. I Recommend the restaurant to more adventuresome diners, or loud boistrous groups, like "Boys Night Out" or work group retreats or the like. If you bring a date -- hope you both know sign language!

Contrary to the other review about a disappointing experience I had the best experience I ever had at any Indian restaurant. The portions are huge and the food is amazing. I tried the chicken Tikka Masala also known as butter chicken and it was fabulous.

The staff was very nice and quick to respond to requests. Not a formal restaurant but definitely a very good spot to stop in and eat if you have little time. I ate dinner on a Saturday night and it was outrageously busy, but the service was still great. The prices were definitely affordable and I was not disappointed with the check.

The window opened to the kitchen reduces any suspicion of improper food handling. Also gave a great view the tandoor and of how your food was being prepared.

Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone in Seattle!!!!

We used to frequent this restaurant when it was Spirit of India, so we were nervous when Naan-N-Curry took over. Just one dinner convinced us the change was for the better. You must try the Pakistani-inspired entrees like the Handi and Karahi Chicken, and the entrees on the back of the menu. We've been back many times and only once, when we had a large party and the place was mobbed, did the service suffer a bit. Other than this anomaly, the staff is friendly and attentive. Food is served up quickly and there's no sticker shock at the end. Of course, the food is the star here; the quality and portions are amazing. We feel lucky that Naan-N-Curry opened here, rather than the crowded Ave. That should keep it a "secret" for a little while!

My girlfriend ordered a chicken-kabab and naan. This would have run ~ $5.00. The owner. who served us, said that the special was chicken with naan, and suggested it. When we got the bill, the special was $19.99....Are you kidding me? The next most expensive item was $8.99!

Here's a summary:
- Owner badmouthed previous restaurant -- completely unprofessional
- It took 10 minutes before we even saw our waiter
- Prices are not very reasonable; add naan, rice, entrees, tax, tip and you'll be pushing $25 EASILY, unlike what their website claims
- Constant pressure to buy more food -- we were interrupted 3 times by different employees to order more rice, naan, drinks, food
- Food was definitely fresh, but I've had better in Seattle (not sure about Renton)

In summary, I DO NOT recommend this restaurant. If you want to good Indian food AND a pleasant experience, I recommend looking at some other restaurants in Seattle, where there is more competition. The "Ave" is a good place to look.
